Fiorella Paredes didn’t use her Halloween candy to satisfy her sweet tooth.

Instead, the 13-year-old saved her Halloween loot to make Christmas sweeter for other children.

Paredes donated her Halloween candy at Christmas to local children through the Gulf Coast Arbor Service Club, which annually collects more than 100 gifts for in-need families.

For her efforts, the Ranch resident recently received the Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch.

EAST COUNTY — When she’s stand-

ing in line at Walmart or Staples, 15-year-old Sophia Lopez garners the attention of shoppers waiting behind her.

It’s what she’s buying that draws stares: hundreds of erasers, crayons and markers.

“When you buy out all the rulers, erasers and crayons, it takes you a while to check out,” Lopez said, laughing. “The cashiers are patient, but people behind us sometimes look at us like we’re crazy.”

While out running other errands, Lopez and her mother, Cristina, always make a special stop by the school supply aisle of local stores.

They comb the aisles for buy one get one free, or buy one get one 50% off deals, and they stuff their family van full of school supplies.

his is the true story of four strangers picked to live in a mansion and have their lives watched. Find out what happens when monkeys stop being polite and start getting real.

Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary’s newest animal housing quarters isn’t “The Real World,” but the residents of Marmoset Mansion have just as much

drama as the MTV reality series.

The stainless steel mansion celebrated its grand opening last week. It’s now the home of four primates: three marmosets, Oliver, Pharaoh and Marley, and a squirrel monkey, Little Man. Siesta Key residents Russ and Sharon Stephens helped fund the project. Sharon Stephens, a donor of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, held a birthday party a few weeks ago at the exotic animal haven, and in lieu of gifts, she asked for donations to build the mansion.

She and her party guests collected the $7,000 needed to construct the facility, which only took a few weeks to build.

Prior to building the mansion, the marmosets and Little Man lived in separate bird cages.

“They went from a single-bed, one-room apartment to a sevenbedroom, four-bath on Siesta Key,” said Clayton Rosaire, an animal trainer at the East County facility.

Since the mansion opened a few weeks ago, the foursome is more peaceful, Rosaire said. The monkeys play in their own areas, while occasionally interacting with the constant stream of paparazzi who photograph or take video of them.

are aggressive toward each other, particularly over food and mates.

“People might think because they are the same type of animal, that they can just be thrown into a house together and everything will be fine,” Rosaire said. “This group won’t be staying up late playing card games. They need their privacy and separate spaces.”

A love triangle helped foster the tense atmosphere inside the full house.

Marley, the only female in the group, sought love when a local resident surrendered her to Big Cat Habitat recently. Rosaire moved her into the mansion with Oliver and Pharaoh to determine whether she would spark a relationship with a male suitor.

Pharaoh and Oliver flipped around the cage to show Marley their affection. But in the end, Marley flipped for one monkey: Pharaoh.

Oliver is still an eligible bach-

elor who Rosaire jokes isn’t taking down his Match.com profile, yet.

Oliver has been spending more time alone in his private estate, probably because he’s jealous, Rosaire said. And, because the couple sleeps in the next bedroom, he isn’t able to get much distance from the lovebirds.

Marley and Pharaoh live together in one of three bedrooms in the mansion. Oliver and Little Man each have their own rooms, and prefer to live a wild life, Rosaire added.

“There’s the couple and the two single men who like to stay up late and party,” Rosaire said. “The boys are loud and make noise when they want.”

Each marmoset also has a swing made from a coconut, a tire swing and a vanity area, in which he or she can look in the mirror.

Marley particularly enjoys the mirror and her neighbors might think she’s vain because of the amount of time she spends checking herself out.

Rosaire has noticed the monkeys interacting more with human visitors. He hopes the facility will help visitors develop a greater appreciation and urge to learn more about the animals.

“Children see these fuzzy little monkeys that look like those they watched on the movie, ‘Rio,’ and they’re hooked,” Rosaire said.

“We want them to develop an understanding for the animals around them.”

Manatee Clerk R.B. “Chips” Shore, 74, dies R. B. “Chips” Shore, one of the most recognized and accomplished circuit court clerks in Florida, has died. He was 74.

First elected to the position of Manatee County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller in 1976, Shore had the longest tenure of any clerk in Manatee County. He had also recently filed to run for a 10th term.

Shore was a pioneer for electronic judicial records in Florida and nationally, officials say. A method Shore and his office developed to access online court records without compromising security, for example, was adopted statewide last year.

Other technological advances on Shore’s watch include e-filing and Smart Bench, a judicial application for judges to access court records.

The Manatee County School Board approved a budget draft for the 2015-16 school year at its July 28 meeting.

The board is increasing its property tax levy by 4.37%, which will increase revenues to $221.8 million from $206 million.

The board also approved a millage rate of 7.267, a decrease from the 7.367 in the 2014-15 school year.

The board plans to continue discussions at Aug. 11 and Aug. 26 workshops. It must adopt a budget by its Sept. 8 meeting.

tage Harbour that a neighborhood project will do very well,” he said. “A family restaurant/ sports bar use would be ideal, as well as services — a nail salon, dry cleaner, hair salon — those types of things.”

Starling Group has owned the property for several years, but Kennelly said time for development finally is right. The parcel’s proximity to Interstate 75 and continued growth at the north end of Lakewood Ranch and along State Road 64 will make it a prime location for the project.

The Starling Group owns a nine-acre parcel immediately north of the site, but Kennelly said the company has no immediate plans for the property.

“I think it would be ideal for a day care on a portion of that land,” he said.

Medical uses also might be appropriate, he said.

“We don’t expect to close until the end of the year,” he said.

“Construction might not start right away. That’s totally up to the purchaser.”

Manatee County planner Rossina Leider said she didn’t have major concerns based on the preapplication for the project. The proposed use is consistent with the property’s future land-use designation.

In Heritage Harbour, the Starling Group is proceeding with plans to build a neighborhood commercial center on five acres at the northeast corner of State Road 64 and Heritage Green Way. Starling Group COO Brian Kennelly said the commercial center likely will include a restaurant on one end and six other units, each at about 1,500 square feet.

Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch has submitted a preliminary application to rezone a 17-acre parcel at Lorraine Road/State Road 70 to build a shopping center that includes a potential grocery store.

Farther north, Sarasota-based Starling Group has submitted plans for a 12,500-square-foot commercial center within Heritage Harbour.

Plans for SMR’s Lorraine project show three multitenant outparcels ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 square feet apiece, two of which will have drive-thrus along Lorraine Road. A fourth outparcel located farther east is designated for a 5,000-square-foot bank. The plaza will be anchored by a 45,600-square-foot tenant, likely a grocery store, with five adjacent businesses, each at about 1,400 square feet.

Kirk Boylston, president of SMR subsidiary Lakewood Ranch Commercial, said the whole property is under contract, but declined to disclose details until the sale is finalized.

East County woman backs book on Florida’s female pioneers GET A COPY

The women’s book project includes River Club’s Mona Jain as one the state’s influential figures.

PAM EUBANKS SENIOR EDITOR RIVER CLUB — As Dr. Mona Jain sits in her River Club home, she proudly clutches a blue-covered, 560-page hardbound history of women in Florida.

Jain may not have authored the book — that was completed by longtime friend and Florida author Doris Weatherford, of Seffner — but the project is one Jain has held closely since 2007, when she and a group of women on the Florida Commission on the Status of Women Foundation first envisioned it.

“This is important because a comprehensive book has never been published,” said Jain, who undertook the project with Floridian Carrie Estevez Lee. “I think it’s a great piece of history.”

The book tells the history of women’s lifestyles and achievements in Florida in the context of what was happening nationally.

It also showcases women who played significant roles in the state’s history, including the first midwife, first woman doctor and first woman teacher.

“The main thing is it’s not only the past,” Jain said, noting the book even highlights the accom-

plishments of an 11-year-old girl who is doing international work.

Weatherford, who has been publishing books on American women since 1986, said “They Dared to Dream” is not a cluster of individual biographies, but rather a history of Florida that emphasizes women.

And, it may be the first book in the world, she said, to point out that there were women in all six exploration missions to Florida between Ponce de Leon in 1513 and the permanent settlement in St. Augustine in 1565.

Weatherford began working on the book in 2007, but paused after receiving two other book deals.

Jain said she is happy “They Dared to Dream” is complete and ready for the public to enjoy.

And, she can’t help but smile as she points to pages 450 and 451 in the book. There, Weatherford has included Jain’s own immigration story.

A native of India, Jain arrived in Sarasota in 1964 to teach biology as a Fulbright exchange teacher.

She was just one of 100 immigrants allowed from India that year. She earned her master’s degree from Florida State University in 1971 and added a doctorate in educational leadership and

“I was not supposed to be in here, and see what she did?” Jain said. “It was a big surprise. You can only say you are honored and touched and humbled. I was not

Lakewood Ranch student gives back(packs)

Batman, Hello Kitty or plain purple: Deciding which backpack design will fit the needs of the students on her list is no small task for Sophia Lopez.

When deciding which backpack to buy for female students, Lopez uses personal experience.

“I think, ‘Would I want to carry that all day?’” Lopez said. “I also think about what I see my friends and other girls at school carrying.”

She buys primarily Hello Kitty and bright-colored backpacks for girls in elementary school. Middle and high girls receive dark or brightly colored backpacks.

Lopez recruits her cousin, Lucas Villegas, to help her select appropriate styles for boys.

Boys in middle and high school typically prefer neutral or onecolor backpacks. Elementary-age boys like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, car and superhero themes.

Elementary school-aged children receive crayons, markers, a binder, notebook, ruler, erasers, pencils, pens, glue, a backpack and other supplies.

Middle and high school-aged students receive more notebooks and folders than younger students, mechanical pencils and lead, highlighters, pencil holders, pens, backpacks and other supplies.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The backpack project started as an idea Lopez hoped would aid her in getting accepted into the National Honor Society in seventh grade.

The group required a leadership activity that also benefited the community.

“I liked the idea, and everything just clicked,” Lopez said. “Collecting supplies was something I was good at, so I’ve kept doing it.”

Lopez funds her program through donations from local residents and businesses. A local SunTrust and Sam’s Club have collected donations from

employees.

She begins the process of collecting supplies in June.

Once school ends for the summer, Lopez mails a letter explaining the project, along with a letter from Children’s Services. Lopez sends letters to the same people and businesses that have already donated, but she also reaches out to new sources, too.

This year, she received more than $600 in monetary donations. She typically receives more money than supply donations, but this year, Lopez is receiving more supplies.

Lopez starts stocking up on supplies at the beginning of summer break. Her parents help her pay for the items until she receives donations.

Although she will graduate in

two years, she hopes someone will piggyback on her idea to continue helping in-need students prepare for school.

“Sometimes we get caught up wanting the newest things and we forget what’s really important,” Lopez said.

Next week, she will help distribute the filled backpacks to students, which is her favorite aspect of the program, she said.

A few years ago, Lopez watched a little girl in kindergarten race toward a Hello Kitty backpack she had been eyeing from across the room. She was the first student to the backpack, and Lopez hasn’t forgotten the child’s excited expression.

“She was so cute and had the biggest smile,” Lopez said. “This project shows how special small things can be and what just $20 can mean for someone.”

three years, Lopez has collected school supplies for in-need K-12 students in Manatee County through her program, The Backpacks That Give Back.

She works with the Grandparents as Parents (GAP) program through Manatee Children’s Services to acquire names and grade levels of local students who can’t afford school supplies for the upcoming school year.

The GAP program provides mentoring for local children and resources for their guardians.

Many of the participants live on fixed incomes.

She will bring the backpacks, pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, markers, crayons and other school supplies to the Aug. 15 GAP meeting — the last one before school starts Aug. 24.

Lopez is helping provide school supplies to 60 students this year.

For the first time, Lopez is working with Alta Vista Elementary School in Sarasota to provide school supplies to a few students there, too.

“A large population — around 94% — of students there rely on free or reduced lunches,” Lopez said. “I know those students need help, and I’m going to do the best I can.”

She plans to stuff as many backpacks as she can afford.

“We think it’s wonderful that she’s reaching out and using her own resources to help less fortunate families,” said Dehea Smith, assistant principal of Alta Vista.

n July 31, members of the Lakewood Ranch Digital Photography Club and their friends wrapped up a yearlong quest to capture 52 weeks’ worth of themed images.

The club will starts its fourth 52-Week Challenge photo blog challenge this week.

“We are not only learning and practicing new photography techniques, but we are learning to look at the world a little more closely and express our creativity with every theme,” challenge cofounder Mindy Towns, says.

Here, bloggers share some of their favorite images, which represent either a “best” photo or one for which they overcame particular challenges to achieve.

Confusion stems from tree-trimming policy Some Tara Preserve residents question why areas aren’t being maintained as they have in years past.

Although it’s been two years since Tara CDD 1 switched landscaping management to West Bay Landscaping Management, the district’s tree-trimming policy continues to be a source of confusion for some residents.

James Kaluk, Tara CDD field manager, said at the Board of Supervisors meeting July 28, that he’s gotten a stack of requests from residents who have asked the CDD to trim trees around their homes.

However, each request will have to be judged on a case-by-case basis, said John Schmidt, a CDD supervisor.

Tara Preserve’s developer, Lake Lincoln LLC, turned maintenance of the community over to the CDD in 2005, but it’s only been in the last few years that the CDD has experienced confusion. When the developer owned the land, it used one landscaping company for all the Tara property — both the Preserve and the golf course.

Now, Tara Golf Course and Country Club and Tara Preserve have separate landscapers.

Tara CDD is responsible only

for property in the CDD. Legally, it can’t manage property owned by other entities, said Schmidt.

The problem is in previous years, the community’s former landscaper would maintain trees and property that were not the CDD’s responsibility. That has led some residents to believe that the CDD is responsible for trimming trees on their property, which is not the case.

Within Tara Preserve, several entities own and manage property and landscaping, including the trees. The Preserve is part of the Nonsense Creek watershed system, which empties into Braden River, putting some of Tara under control of the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD). The golf course owns property bordering the Preserve, and Manatee County manages oak trees in the area.

“We are the managers of a relatively small portion of property in relationship to what the golf course owns, but because we are a government, the residents have been coming to the CDD asking what we can help and cannot help with,” Schmidt said.

In this case, it’s the homeowner’s prerogative to hire an arborist to trim the tree up to his property line, at his own expense. Only if the tree is growing on CDD land, and has grown into a private property in a way that poses an immediate danger to the homeowner’s residence would the CDD pay to have it cut back, Schmidt said.

“I had the same problem, and I hired an arborist at my expense,” said Michael Dyer, a CDD supervisor, said at the meeting.

Now that Tara is about 12 years old, its age is starting to show in the trees, said Beth Bond, CDD supervisor.

“When we moved there, all the trees were little,” she said. “No body noticed the trees or shrubbery that comes with wetlands.”

The CDD’s attorney informed the board that the CDD cannot use tax money to maintain land other than what it owns—and in some cases, is legally prohibited from touching some trees, such as oaks or those owned by other entities. Oak trees require a permit to be cut down, and sometimes a permit is required just to trim them, Bond said.

Football preview: ODA JEN BLANCO SPORTS EDITOR

I

t’s been an offseason of change for The Out-of-Door Academy football team, but it’s one the Thunder is learning to embrace.

After finishing last season 2-8 and spending the summer in the weight room, the Thunder are nearing the end of their first week of regular season practice under the guidance of first-year head coach Ken Sommers.

Sommers was named ODA’s new coach five weeks before the start of the season, replacing former coach Brett Timmons, who also served as the school’s athletic director, after Timmons and ODA agreed to a mutual parting of ways. Timmons had been ODA’s only coach since the Thunder played its first season of football in 2006.

But Sommers is no stranger to the team, having been with the program for the past seven years.

Sommers served as an assistant coach under Timmons, working with the offensive line, while also coaching the Thunder’s middle school team.

But working with a predominately new coaching staff isn’t the only adjustment the Thunder has had to make this season.

After spending the past two seasons in Class 3A-District 6, alongside rival Cardinal Mooney, ODA will be moving down to Class 2A-District 5 this season.

The change will pit ODA against area foes St. Stephen’s and Bradenton Christian, along with Cambridge Christian and Carrollwood Day in Tampa.

The change might just be the fresh start ODA has been looking for, as it attempts to climb back into district prominence.

ODA returns the majority of its starters both on offense and defense, including playmakers Joey Runge, Trenton Radigan, Najee Rhodes and Jason Fineberg, who missed the entire 2014 season with a torn tendon in his thumb.

The Thunder also are stronger in size and experience on both sides of the ball; and with the majority of its roster now juniors and seniors, ODA could be headed for a breakout season.

Over the next three weeks, we’ll be going inside the huddle with seven area football teams, as they prepare for the start of the regular season, which officially kicks off Aug. 28.

This week, the Observer takes an in-depth look at ODA and its goals for the upcoming season.

You’ll hear Sommers’ expectations for the season and learn why Fineberg hasn’t played a full season of football since the eighth grade while meeting the players who will be called upon to lead the Thunder this season.

With his father, Larry, by his side, The Out-of-Door Academy junior running back sits back, turns on the film and watches the previous night’s game unfold.

Fineberg has had his fair share of bumps and bruises, a given when it comes to his position, but it’s what lies in between the tackles — the critical first downs, the hard-fought yards and, in some cases, the missed opportunities that are the most telling.

Fineberg relies on these moments — good and bad — to guide him on the field.

“It’s a good way to learn,” Fineberg says. “That’s what you did and you can’t say anything (else) about it.”

After injuries forced him off of the field each of the past two seasons, a now healthy Fineberg is hoping the 2015 season will not only further his own highlight reel but also prove to be a turning point for the Thunder, who are looking to become a champion-

ship contender once again.

Fineberg was in fifth grade the last time ODA won a district championship and advanced to the Class 2A state semifinals after winning their first regional title.

It would be another two years before he would suit up in a Thunder football uniform, but Fineberg, whose older brother, Drew, was in eighth grade and got pulled up from the middle school team during the Thunder’s playoff run, remembers watching the players take the field and seeing the enthusiasm surrounding the team.

ODA returned to the playoffs again in 2010, but they haven’t been back since.

“A lot of people think we’re not good,” Fineberg says. “They underestimate us. As a team we know what we need to get done.

We want the community to (rally) around us, pull for us and come to our games, and, really, that starts with winning.”

I listen to hip hop and rap music before the game, and I always put my left shoe on first.

Why did you choose No. 5?

My brother was No. 5 when he played at ODA, and it’s just a good number.

What’s your favorite pregame meal?

Pasta. I just like it plain with nothing on it.

Who is one player on this team who doesn’t get much notoriety, but is instrumental to the team’s success?

Joey Runge. He puts in the most effort and never takes a play off and is at every workout. If every player on the team was like him then we would win every game this year, and that’s a promise.

Fineberg prepared to return to the field last season, but a torn tendon in his thumb ended his sophomore season before he even took the field.

“When I tore my thumb that was the worst (pain) ever,” Fineberg says. “It was hard because I still felt like I could play, but I wasn’t allowed to. At that point, there’s nothing you can do about it. You just have to get ready for next year.”

Fineberg has only played one full season of football since he began playing in seventh grade, and that was in eighth grade. Now with his junior season and a new schedule of opponents upon him, Fineberg is hoping to reignite the enthusiasm for football that his brother, who is now a wide receiver at Hobart College, experienced during his time at ODA. “A lot of the kids who were on that eighth grade team are on the (varsity) team now,” Fineberg says. “We want to get back to that type of play. We did it once, so we know we can do it again. We know we can get it done because we’ve done it before.”

Following in the footsteps of his older brother, Fineberg gravitated toward running back. The younger Fineberg spent countless hours watching his brother on the field and emulating his movements.

“We both have a similar type of playing style in the way we move and make defenders miss,” Fineberg says. “He always told me to go 100% and never give up. He’s always pushing me.”

Fineberg missed the last two games of his seventh grade season because of fluid in his knee.

He returned the following year to help lead ODA to its most successful middle school season when the team nearly went undefeated under first-year head coach Ken Sommers, who was the middle school head coach at the time.

Fineberg moved up to the varsity squad as a freshman. Two games into the season Fineberg was named the Thunder’s starting running back after Drew Fineberg tore his ACL for the second time. It was a position Jason Fineberg would’ve gladly given up to have his brother out on the field for his senior season.

“That season was tough on us because we had a lot of players hurt,” Fineberg says. “I would go home at the end of the day and see him (in pain). Being out on the field was something I always wanted, but I didn’t want it that way.”

A year later, Fineberg broke his ankle midway through the season and had to have four screws put in. He spent the next two months watching ODA from the sidelines on crutches.

LWR Baptist Church teaches life lessons during day camp

akewood Ranch Baptist Church combined the activities of summer camp with life-skills education during its first summer camp this year.

The church had offered vacation Bible school in the past, but this year it offered something new: MAD (music, art and drama) camp. During the program, children participated in a play, learned how to play musical instruments and also made art and woodworking projects. Before daily activities started, however, volunteers taught the children about a life skill, such as patience, responsibility or giving.

“Life skills are important ... not only here at church,” said Jessica Stack, kindergarten through fifth grade director. “It carries over to all aspects of their life.”

RiverLife Vacation Bible School goes wild for Crazy Hair Day

W

hoville-esque hair was a clear trend during RiverLife Church’s “Crazy Hair Day” July 30. Each day of camp had different group activities, and children received points for their participation and enthusiasm.

The vacation Bible school had 65 children and 40 volunteers, and was themed “MOVE.” The theme was centered on stories of people whose faith inspired them to take action in their lives.

– JESSICA SALMOND Melinda Jeter, Cindy Schultz, and Jeannette Kennedy are the three main vacation Bible school organizers. “Jeanette’s the lead singer, I’m the lead guitarist, and Cindy is the base drummer in this,” said Jeter.
