Sweaty, but happy Panther Ridge resident Ron Powell cringed when his daughter, Candace Powell, asked him to dress as a ringmaster Aug. 13 for the her 5K race, the Candy’s Circus Run. He agreed to sweat it out in his role of masters of ceremonies, despite his better judgement of wearing the thick garb in 90-plus degree heat. It paid off. The circus-themed run at Nathan Benderson Park raised more than $6,000 for CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. Her goal was $5,000.

When Matt Holt started research to see if a gourmet burger restaurant was feasible in eastern Manatee County, he was aware the American public was being bombarded by pleas to eat healthier and dump the fan-favorite beef patty. But he felt strongly that, done the right way, he could draw a crowd. Along with his mother, Pinki Goolsby, and brother, Shane Keinz, he opened Full Belly Stuffed Burgers three years ago. “The burger is such an American classic and a staple of our diet,” Holt said at his restaurant at 8742 E. State Road 70, in Bradenton. “We just needed to do it in a new way. We feel that if people try it the first time, they will come back. SEE BURGER WARS PAGE 4

It’s pure Haven After more than 60 years serving people with disabilities, Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities is making a name change. It’s simply, “The Haven.” CEO Brad Jones said improvements and modernization of the campus created the perfect opportunity to rebrand the agency. The new logo represents the three stages of life: children, teens and adults. “The Haven is a place of safety and opportunity for people with disabilities,” he said.
