PAM EUBANKS SENIOR EDITOR MANATEE COUNTY — Each day Mark Johns drives to work from his home in River Strand, at Heritage Harbour, he sees firsthand the growth in residential development that the Manatee County Property Appraiser’s Office is seeing in charts and spreadsheets.

During budget discussions this month, Manatee Property Appraiser Charles Hackney reported that the county added 2,600 homes to its tax roll in 2014, a 30% increase in new construction compared with the prior year.

Although growth is occurring across the county, nearly half is in the East County area. In the East Manatee Fire Rescue District, which encompasses most of East County, 2014 taxable values rose to $361.3 million, up 64.09% compared with 2013.

Johns, director of appraisal services for the property appraiser’s office, said the location of his River Strand community, for example, makes it an easy choice for prospective development with easy access to I-75, shopping, restaurants and other amenities.

“When you’ve got that infrastructure, that’s where people are going to go,” he said.

Of the top 10 communities

reporting new home construction, six are located in East County, with another two in Parrish and the remaining two in Bradenton.

Lakewood Ranch’s Esplanade and Central Park communities capped off the 2014 new construction trend with 165 and 156 new homes, respectively. Johns’ Heritage Harbour development saw 129 new homes added to the tax roll.

“It’s close to the volume we had in 2008 (at the height of the boom),” Hackney said.

“We’re projecting about 3,000 new homes in 2015,” Johns added.

Although growth continues in East County, particularly in Lakewood Ranch, the property appraiser’s office expects thatgrowth over the next decade will be focused to the northeast, in Parrish.

Already, about 23,000 homes have been approved or are pending approval, and developers in that area are generally offering homes at lower price ranges, often less than $200,000.

The growth has prompted Hackney to request three new positions for his office. Manatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker’s recommended budget did not allocate funding for those positions, but Manatee County

commissioners, during their last budget meeting, indicated they’d support funding two of the three requested posts.

Those positions are for entrylevel appraiser trainees, with a salary range of $32,032 to $41,194.

Hackney agreed to withdraw his request for the third position, an assessment specialist with a salary range of $36,296 to $46,290.

The Property Appraiser’s Office is responsible for identifying all property in the county and placing it on a tax roll — but does not set tax rates or collect taxes.

The department, which has 54 fulltime employees, identifies each new home through permitting and verifies information provided through a field visit after the property receives a certificate of completion. All relevant data are then entered into the computer system.

— Lakewood Ranch’s expansion toward its eastern boundary will continue.

The Lakewood National and Bridgewater East developments will bring a combined 1,999 homes to a 1,389-acre property north of State Road 70 and east of Premier Sports Campus.

Manatee County commissioners approved a general development plan by Lennar for the projects Aug. 6.

The northern part of the site, dubbed Lakewood National, will be a gated 36-hole golf course community with 477 single-family homes and 1,110 multifamily units developed in two phases.

Divided by the Braden River, Bridgewater East will be farther south, with 412 single-family homes.

“We’re pleased with the approval, and we think it’s a development similar to what Lennar has done elsewhere in the county and look forward to having a successful project.” Lennar attorney Caleb Grimes said.

posal, saying traffic on State Road 70 is already dangerous at times and will get worse with the addition of nearly 2,000 homes, plus the 1,300 homes approved for the neighboring Del Webb project.

District 5 Commissioner Vanessa Baugh said the Florida Department of Transportation already is evaluating conditions on State Road 70 because of traffic accidents and fatalities there.

At the meeting, she pledged to work on the issue and invited Norwood to join her.

“Although the decision did not go as we had hoped, I want to thank Commissioner Baugh for an invitation to work with her and the FDOT to improve the public safety and the traffic situation on east State Road 70,” Norwood said after the meeting. “In the long run, I believe that safer roads combined with a thoughtful development of Lakewood National and Bridgewater East will improve home values in Panther Ridge.”

Baugh said she believes the Lakewood National/Bridgewater East project will be a “beautiful” project once complete and likes that it is 69% open space. Developers also made sure not to place homes immediately abutting the Panther Ridge community.

Concession navigates helistop placement Some neighbors don’t want the golf club’s proposed helistop to land in their community.

EAST COUNTY — Representatives of The Concession Golf Club hope a proposal to install a helistop within the golf club’s property will fly. But they are modifying their plans to address neighbors’ concerns.

On July 30, the club resubmitted site plans relocating the proposed helistop from near The Concession’s gated entrance off Lindrick Lane, off State Road 70, to another site farther within the project close to the golf course’s clubhouse.

“It’s what you would call well within our borders. We’re trying to work with them,” The Concession Golf Club spokesman Otto Jack Jr. said. “It took a while to come up with a position we thought would be a good compromise. We’re trying to be good neighbors.”

The Concession Golf Club in April filed its original application to revise its general development plan to include a helistop.

Jack said representatives of The Concession Golf Club presented their proposal for the helistop to the board of the Foxwood at Panther Ridge Homeowners Association, the section of Panther Ridge closest to the proposed site, shortly after submitting the original application to the county.

“We wanted to involve them

early in the process in an effort to be good neighbors,” Jack said.

However, club owners began working on revisions to the site proposal after learning from Manatee County that neighbors had raised concerns about the helistop’s location. Finding a new location took time because The Concession hosted the NCAA tournament in May and June.

Jack noted the proposal is for a helistop, which has a less intense use compared with a helipad.

“We don’t know how often it will be used, and we don’t expect it to be much, but it’s something there to be able to use, if it’s needed,” Jack said. “We didn’t ask for overnight landings.”

Since 2006, there have been only five known helicopter landings within the property, he said.

Panther Ridge residents who submitted objections to the original proposal said helicopter landings would spook horses, putting their handlers and riders in danger, and also affect property values and resales for horse or residential properties near the helistop.

Foxwood resident Daniela Drillman, whose home is nearest the original project site and who is heading up a committee on the helistop, has circulated a flyer to educate other homeowners about the proposal and said she will continue to fight the project if it proves a potential disruption to

her and fellow neighbors.

“It is my feeling, while (I’m) glad the efforts were to move the helipad, we will have to carefully review the proposed location, as well as investigate the ramifications of flight paths and takeoff/landings,” she said. “We will actively oppose any disruption to our community, as well as to the area as a whole that a helipad may bring.”

Stephanie Little, vice president of the Foxwood at Panther Ridge Homeowners Association, said the board was “very concerned” the closest residents would have problems with the helistop being so close, as well as the adverse impacts on horses.

“No one wants the helistop,” she said. “I’m not aware of the exact location of the new proposal, but it is still too close and we do not want a helistop anywhere near our equestrian community.”

Debbie Miller, property manager for five of Panther Ridge’s nine HOAs, said she’d received only a few comments from residents, about half of whom opposed the project and half who didn’t mind it.

The Concession Golf Club had discussed adding a helistop within its boundaries in 2010, but the plan was abandoned before any proposals were submitted to the county, Jack said.

Chip Miller, second in command at the gang, said the group gets together for the train robberies and other events at which they perform. However, in between those weekends, they often see each other around town or at church at the Sandy Baptist Church congregation in East County.

During the summer, the gang doesn’t usually do any performances because the thick, oldfashioned clothing, is not safe in the heat. However, this summer, the gang suited in their gear — minus the guns — for a cowboy supper at Miller’s Dutch Kitch’n in Bradenton. The cowboys drew curious stares, but they blended in well to the old-time feel of the restaurant.

The Hole in the Head gang is filled with straight shooters who embrace the cowboy spirit of doing what’s right.

ou might know Rick Holgate as a public safety communications officer for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, or as a retired Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officer who still serves in its reserves.

But about four weeks a year, he sheds his modern identity and embraces his alter ego, Sixgun Sam McRill. He’s one of about 15 men and women who make up the Hole in the Head Gang, embracing the lives of Wild West cowboys and outlaws when they perform.

Acting out 1880s-era cowboy shoot-em-ups came naturally to Holgate, who is now the group’s leader — or marshal — and still has a picture of himself dressed as a cowboy at age 6, complete with a raccoon hat.

“I grew up watching Roy Rogers,” he said. “I always had the same (cowboy) philosophy—do the right thing.”

Hole in the Head began with two men in 1993, Mike Alle and Alan Crooks. These two former Sarasota residents struck up a deal with the Florida Railroad Museum in Parrish to perform cowboy and outlaw “shootouts”

for the Florida Railroad Museum as a fundraiser.

Today, the Hole in the Head Gang performs “train robberies” as an interactive program for the museum and one of the museum’s biggest fundraisers. The train departs from the museum and takes passengers to “Periwinkle Junction,” where the outlaws take over the train and cross pistols with the marshal and his crew — using blank bullets, of course.

Everyone participating is dressed in full regalia, and the junction is complete with about six buildings, including a saloon and a jail.

“Each person has their own ‘thing.’ We know each other’s moves, and it helps us to have fun,” Holgate said. “Every show is a little different.”

Before the weekend shows, usually the group will gather in Periwinkle Junction after it has been assembled for its own cowboy camp. Members catch up over a campfire and guitar-playing.

The campout camaraderie is second-in-command Buffalo “Chip” Miller’s favorite part of being in the gang. He has been involved with the group for 11 years with his wife, MaryAnne Chancey Hecht.

right thing — the cowboy way,” he said. During the performances, and even off-duty, Miller tries to exemplify his character.

“We’re trying to live it as authentically as possible,” he said. “I encourage (other members) to think about your character. Throw that image of yourself out there.”

Miller enjoys watching childrens’ reactions to his full costume and seeing the look of amazement on their faces when they think there is a real-life cowboy in their midst.

Miller and Chancey Hecht are embracing a small piece of Florida cowboy country. About 10

years ago, the couple purchased 15 acres of land east of I-75. They haven’t fenced off their land, so neighboring cattle still amble through their property, and they like showing the cows to their grandchildren.

One piece of the land has a small creek running through it, and a low section of the bank that they said had been known as “The Crossover,” where ranchers used to cross their herds of cattle. They’ve kept the name and installed a small sign signifying the spot. “‘Cowboy’ is a spirit,” Miller said. “My heroes have always been cowboys.”

Changes to community documents won’t resolve ongoing litigation, but they will provide clarity for the future.

— Residents in Waterlefe didn’t create the community’s governing documents, but they made all the difference in changing them.

On Aug. 5, households voted 474-1 to approve changes to the community’s documents, spelling out a new agreement between the Waterlefe Community Development District, The Shores Homeowners Association and the overall Master Property Owners Association.

The agreement states residents of The Shores, a private, gated community within Waterlefe, will pay the same as other Waterlefe property owners for MPOA fees and equivalent CDD assessments, even though The Shores is not part of the CDD. The MPOA will assume common-area maintenance within The Shores and collect assessments on behalf of itself and the CDD. The agreement stems, in part, from a related lawsuit. The MPOA filed against seven Shores residents who stopped paying CDD assessments in 2011. Those owners said they should not pay because The Shores is not part of the CDD. The litigation con-

tinues, and although the new agreement does not change its outcome, it will clarify the issue going forward.

Of the community’s 617 homes, 412 households had to vote in favor of the proposal, a sizable feat considering about 50% of Waterlefe’s homeowners are away for the summer, said MPOA representative Tom Werner.

Werner, who stepped in to assist MPOA President Franklyn Dickson over the summer with educating Waterlefe residents about proposed changes, said members of the three boards involved held community meetings and sent out a question-andanswer document explaining the issue and the fix about 45 days prior to the vote. A team of about 20 volunteers then each called about 20 households to make sure they received the documents and to answer any questions.

Werner said the main challenges were overcoming apathy and helping Waterlefe homeowners distinguish between the majority of The Shores homeowners, who have paid assessments, and those involved in the lawsuit.

“I was surprised we got it done,” Werner said. “It was a bad proposition for everybody, what the (developer) drafted.”

Even though he is on summer vacation from the Pinnacle Academy’s Career Development Program, Luh is still waking up early.

From 7 to 11 a.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, the 20-year-old is helping maintain the ponds, trees, neighborhood hardscape and other aesthetics of Lakewood Ranch through an internship with Lakewood Ranch Town Hall’s Operations Department.

A Lakewood Ranch High School graduate, Luh is logging community service hours for the Pinnacle Academy’s Career Development Program.

The internship began June 29 and continues through Aug. 19.

A few of his duties: Luh has helped stock local ponds with carp, fish that eat algae in ponds. (He didn’t realize how heavy the 1-pound fish become after loading 10 per acre into local ponds, he says.)

On Aug. 5, he cleared overgrown

trees that were hanging near the pavilion in Summerfield and had just been chopped down. Even as sweat drips down his forehead and onto his bright orange operations T-shirt, Luh still smiles.

“Man, this is heavy,” Luh says, laughing while stretching to toss a tree branch that’s taller than he is into a trash bin.

Cleaning guardhouses in Ranch communities, helping fill pot holes near the dog park in Greenbrook with shells and planting flowers alongside Gardeners Out East at the new butterfly garden have also kept Luh busy as he works alongside different operations employees each day.

“I love being outside,” Luh says.

“We’ve seen alligators and deer, but no hogs luckily. They’ll chase ya.”

Through the career program, Luh, who works full time at Publix as a bagger and supply stocker, is learning interviewing skills and how to complete job applications in the classroom, while also gaining real world experience through his internship.

Luh, a fishing enthusiast who has caught more bull, hammerhead and tiger sharks than he can remember, is possibly prepping

for a career in the great outdoors.

Pinnacle Academy Executive Director Kirstina Ordetx believes an agriculture-related career could be a good match for Luh. “I hear all of Christian’s fishing stories while we’re working together on the school’s garden,” Ordetx says. “I have heard all about what an outdoorsman he is.”

Luh received the internship because of a growing relationship between Pinnacle Academy and Town Hall Operations.

Director of Operations Ryan Heise has been working with Pinnacle since early 2014, when he helped the school install a garden behind its pre-kindergarten building.

“This opportunity is a good resume builder for Christian,” Heise says. “And there may be a (job) opportunity for him in Lakewood Ranch in the future.”

But Luh still hasn’t pinpointed what field he wants to enter after he receives his certificate from Pinnacle in more than a year.

“I might want to be an Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter, fishing captain or work outside,” Luh says. “This (internship) has been fun, and I don’t mind waking up early for it. But it would be funny to go bang on my friends’ windows at 6:30 a.m. when I’m getting ready to start my day.”

Luh and the 13 other students ages 16 through 22 who are enrolled in Pinnacle Academy’s Career Development Program are required to log community service hours and are exempt from mandatory summer academic programs at the school.

The Career Development Program offers a combined focus on academic and vocational training. It also explores avenues of employment for students, and assesses students’ strengths and weaknesses, so they can find employment that fits their personalities.

“Internships like this one give students a more diverse view of job opportunities and what’s out there for them in the future,” Pinnacle Academy Executive Director Kirstina Ordetx says. “Christian, hopefully, made some good relationships within the community that he can build on later.”

How to hurricane-proof your home As the height of hurricane season approaches, CERT members detail best practices for making your home safe in case of natural disasters.

When John and Carol O’Brien saw Hurricane Charley’s path travel close to home in 2004 in East County, they knew they were unprepared to weather the storm from inside their home in Riverwalk Oaks.

“I remember watching the storm on television and thinking, ‘Oh my God, we’re not ready,’” Carol O’Brien said. “Then, we woke up.”

In 2007, the couple joined the Lakewood Ranch Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and started making their home more hurricane-safe.

As the peak months of hurricane season approach in September and October, the couple now feels confident that they could stay in their home during a Category 4 hurricane, which can reach wind speeds of 156 mph.

To date, the Ranch residents have invested nearly $20,000 in hurricane-proof equipment for their home, film that hugs their windows and panels that cover them, and sheets of Velcro-like material that protect their patio.

“The garage door is a large, flat surface, and hurricane-force winds bearing down on the door can easily force it in,” Kline said.

“If the garage door is breached, the chances of the home being seriously damaged by wind and water are dramatically increased.

And the pressure created by the force of the wind through a breached garage door may blow the roof off the home.”

Although Lakewood Ranch homes aren’t located in a flood zone, residents shouldn’t assume the weather forecast will always be clear, Lakewood Ranch CERT President Victor Kline said.

“Although we’re miles from the beach and any water, that doesn’t mean we can’t have high-intensity winds and rain or that a hurricane won’t hit us,” Kline added.

“People are generally under the misconception that their home is protected from floodwaters by their homeowners’ policy. But, if the water comes up from the ground, as in flood runoff, your homeowners’ policy will not cover the damage. The recent rains in our area over the past week and a half are an indication, even for inland communities.”

akewood Ranch Republican Club President Steve Vernon has been involved in politics for years and campaigned for current Florida District 73 Rep. Greg Steube in his 2012 campaign. Now, the Chicago native and owner of Manasota TV is preparing to run for the seat if Steube runs for the Florida Senate.

I really got involved with politics at the end of the Bush term and the beginning of the Obama administration through total frustration. I didn’t like what they were doing.

I didn’t like the bailouts, the corporate welfare or the progressive socialist point of view.

The vast majority of District 73 is in Manatee County, yet we didn’t have a Manatee County resident running. Joe Gruters (who also filed to run in the district race) is the chairman of the Sarasota Republican Club, yet only a small portion of 73 is in Sarasota, so I became the Manatee County candidate.

Both Joe and I have said we’d withdraw if Steube chooses not to run for state Senate. I believe he’s doing a very good job.

Steube had bills I’d like to reintroduce. One, would allow approved gun owners to carry guns to protect other citizens and children, even in schools.

No-guns-allowed zones invite the crazies to come in. They’re not going to go into places they know people are carrying; they’re going to go into gunfree zones. Another would have allowed licensed concealedcarry holders to carry on college campuses. One issue I’d like to address is having the state government play a proper role in maintaining individual liberties and have a limited government...

Every year, the legislators meet, and they just add new laws and regulations that keep adding up.

I’m in favor of school choice because competition brings out the best. I would promote charter schools, school choice, home schooling — any alternative means of education that would invite competition.

He said that his brother took the keys from him and began to drive away while he was retrieving something from the car. Police determined that he was not carjacked and that his brother did not have a gun. 1:43 a.m. — 1400 block of Upper Manatee River Road Battery: A woman was following her friend home and pulled into a parking lot, where she was confronted verbally by an unknown woman, The woman punched her through her car window, which was rolled down, and approached her aggressively again when she got out of her car to obtain the woman’s vehicle tag number.

The victim was not injured but said she wants to press charges because she is embarrassed that she let a “40-something lady” hit her.

Information: A man was transported to a hospital for a possible overdose after drinking and possibly taking drugs with friends.

After the man passed out in an apartment, two of his friends left the unit suddenly, leaving another man alone to perform CPR before EMS revived the him.

The man said he had been drinking but denied using drugs. Police observed signs of suspicious substances at the apartment and turned them in to property and evidence.

Pickleball nets East County fans Tara Preserve is the latest community to court players of the increasingly popular sport.

Tara Preserve’s CDD was looking ahead when it decided to add pickleball courts to its existing tennis facilities in January.

“The tennis courts were underutilized,” said CDD board Supervisor Beth Bond. “We did some research and found we could switch a tennis court to pickleball.”

The community converted one tennis court to two pickleball courts that are now open.

The courts didn’t come from a sudden surge in interest from Tara residents.

Because pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, the board decided to add the new amenity while the courts were repaved.

The courts opened at the end of July, but heavy rains have kept players off the court.

Once people start moving back from their summer residences, Bond expects more participation.

Tara isn’t the only community to get “pickleball mania,” as Greg Hill, Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club junior tennis director and pickleball professional, calls it.

Hill has watched pickleball gather momentum in the Country Club, too. It already has four designated courts, and Country Club East is slated to get eight of its own courts in early 2016 as the clubhouse there is developed.

“People coming in to move here, they want to know about future pickleball plans,” Hill said.

About 80 of the Country Club’s residents are listed as actively using the pickleball courts and play Friday round robin matches.

Once Country Club East’s courts are done, Lakewood Ranch plans to look into having a league or hosting pickleball tournaments. As new country clubs across the country are developed, they’re frequently installing pickleball courts as a standard, like tennis courts and pools, Hill said.

The sport is popular among older adults because it places less stress on the body than tennis.

“I played on the pro tennis circuit. I have a bad hip, and (pickleball) works out good for me,” Hill said. “I can still get a workout.

I’m an ambassador and a friend of tennis, but I’ve extended that to pickleball. I like to see the game grow.”

Football Preview: Cardinal Mooney JEN BLANCO SPORTS EDITOR

With two full weeks of practice nearly complete, coach Drew Lascari is pleased with how far Cardinal Mooney has come in such a short period of time.

But as Cardinal Mooney prepares for arguably its toughest schedule in school history, the Cougars’ first-year head coach knows there’s plenty of work that still needs to be done.

After spending five years as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at national powerhouse Don Bosco Prep, in New Jersey, where he saw the Ironmen win a national title in 2011, Lascari was named Cardinal Mooney’s new head coach at the end of May. Lascari replaces former coach Josh Smithers, who stepped down after seven seasons at the helm.

Without the benefit of being on campus for spring football, Lascari spent the summer playing catch up. Cardinal Mooney athletes spent four days a week together getting stronger in the weight room and tackling the playbook in preparation for the upcoming season.

It’s a new system and a new culture, but it’s one the Cougars have fully embraced.

“I love him,” senior lineman Eric Orsini says of Lascari. “I love the intensity at practice. We don’t (have time) to feel sorry for ourselves. He’s always motivating me and my teammates.”

Cardinal Mooney finished 8-4 last season, winning its second consecutive Class 3A-District 6 championship and advancing to the regional semifinals.

The Cougars will have a new district to contend with this season after switching over to Class 3A-District 5 alongside Calvary Christian, St. Petersburg Catholic and Clearwater Central Catholic — all three of which the Cougars faced last season.

After losing three-year starting quarterback Reese Vita, who holds the school’s all-time passing record, to graduation, the Cougars will rely on their skill positions to help take some of the pressure off quarterbacks Tristan Hillerich and Jack Koscho.

Cardinal Mooney returns 11 seniors this season, including starting running back Jaz Mongeon, safety Alex Sobczak and tight end Jake Santiago. That leadership and familiarity with one another will be key for the Cougars this season, after six of their opponents reached the playoffs last season, including Victory Christian Academy, the Class 2A state champion.

The regular season officially kicks off Aug. 28.

or 24 days this summer, Eric Orsini traded footballs and playbooks for groceries and goodie bags.

As his teammates huddled together in the weight room preparing for the upcoming season, the Cardinal Mooney senior lineman was roughly 2,750 miles away tackling his own mission.

Orsini, along with his girlfriend, Liz Velez, traveled June 19 to Peru and spent nearly a month volunteering in the village of Zapallal, located about two hours outside of Lima. It was Orsini’s first mission trip.

Orsini and Velez began talked about doing a mission trip at the end of March. After looking at several options, they decided it would be more fulfilling to start their own.

Orsini and Velez eventually settled on Peru. Velez’s mother was born in Peru, and she still has family there.

Orsini and Velez created their mission — Finding a Path with Christ in Peru — and immediately began raising money for their trip.

The two raised roughly $3,300,

which they used to buy food for the villagers.

Orsini, who doesn’t speak Spanish, traveled back and forth between Lima, where he was staying with Velez’s grandparents, and Zapallal four days a week.

During each visit, Orsini provided food, such as soup, chicken and rice, for roughly 130 villagers.

He also gave them money twice to buy their own food.

“They gave us the change back, which I thought was really interesting,” Orsini says. “They don’t have as much as I have, but they are a lot happier than I am most days. It changes your perspective.”

In addition to buying food, Orsini and Velez also taught an English class and read books and played games with the children.

With each visit, Orsini formed a tighter bond with the children, particularly a 5-year-old boy named Iker Bances.

“He always wanted hugs and to curl up in my lap,” Orsini says. “It was a lot more fun than I expected it to be. They were all so little and they all wanted to be picked up.

Odell Beckham Jr. I love his expression on the field, and he plays for my favorite team, the New York Giants. The plays that he’s made are definitely exciting plays to watch. I’ve been (following) him since college, so when his name was called on draft night I was so happy.

Who is the one player on this team who doesn’t get much notoriety but is instrumental to the team’s success?

Alex Sobczak. He’s loud during games and he makes some big plays on the field. We definitely

need him on the field because he’s very fast.

Do you have any pregame rituals?

I listen to a certain playlist on my phone, and I go around to all of the offensive linemen, who are my best friends, and get them hyped up. I always take a pregame photo, too.

What’s your favorite pregame meal?

Chicken Alfredo.

Why did you choose No. 56?

It’s my dad’s favorite number. His favorite player is Lawrence Taylor, who wore 56.

It’s been nearly a month since Orsini returned home and he’s still thinking about his friends in Peru. But he’s happy to be back on the practice field with his teammates.

give me hugs. It was so cute.”

Orsini planned to teach the children how to play football, but, without a football in sight, he picked soccer instead.

The day before Orsini was scheduled to leave, he and Velez used the money that was leftover to throw an Independence Day party for the villagers complete with hot chocolate, sandwiches, games, goodie bags and visits from several Disney characters.

As he boarded a plane to head back home, Orsini couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sadness at the thought of leaving his new friends behind.

“They kept saying, ‘Eric, please don’t go,’” Orsini says. “They’ve sent me letters saying they miss me and to please don’t forget them. They didn’t want me to leave.”

“We’ve definitely improved,” Orsini says. “We’re more mentally focused and in a lot better shape, and we’ve also become better and closer friends.”

But, no matter what happens on the field, Orsini has learned to value each moment.

“I never want to feel sorry for myself,” Orsini says. “Even when I’m fatigued during a game, I just have to take what life throws at me. Everything happens for a reason, and if this is my last season playing, I want to give every play 100%.”

Pool in Paradise

A Panther Ridge couple makes a splash after a decade of planning and saving for the perfect pool.

I

t took 10 years of saving and research before Henry and Valerie Taylor were able to make their dream of their own personal oasis a reality.

That oasis is a $145,000 pool behind their Panther Ridge home, and it’s the subject of a recent episode of Animal Planet’s “Insane Pools: Off the Deep End.” The couple wanted a pool when they bought their house 10 years ago, but they weren’t enthusiastic about the options they found.

“They were little holes in the ground,” Henry Taylor said. “I didn’t want something plain or cookie-cutter.”

The Taylors left a bare spot in

their backyard as a reminder to keep striving to get the design they wanted.

“We wanted something out of the ordinary…that ‘wow’ factor,” Henry Taylor said.

Finally, Henry Taylor discovered YouTube videos of Osprey designer Lucas Congdon, president and CEO of Lucas Lagoons, building and designing luxury custom pools, so the couple invited him to brainstorm.

“He was drawing ideas in the dirt,” Valerie Taylor said. “You could see his brain cells working.”

Construction began in late August 2014, and the pool was completed in November. This week, the Taylors put the finishing touch on their outdoor space: a 16-foot screen cage.

“We wanted something to make us feel good every day, somewhere we could come home after work and relax, just chill out.”

The Taylors’ backyard paradise is now a two-pooled wonderland of 4,000 square feet. The smaller pool, or the therapy pool, is equipped with spa jets and a current-producing jet that allows for swimming in place.

A small “creek” streams beneath a rock bridge and flows into the larger swimming pool.

An 80-inch TV and 12 speakers placed around the complex are controlled by their iPad. But the real “wow” factor is in the landscaping: Lucas Lagoons trucked in 48 tons of real stone from Tennessee to complete the natural look of the design. Palm trees and plants trim the edges of pools, tying the project to the Florida native habitat and scrub jay preserve behind the property.

Now, the Taylors are finally ready to kick back and enjoy their dreams.

“It’s an oasis,” Henry Taylor said. It’s like a fairy tale.”

PRIME TIME Lucas Lagoons partnered with Animal Planet for the series, “Insane Pools: Off the Deep End.” The Taylors’ pool was featured on a single episode that aired in March, but Animal Planet was present during the entire construction of the project.

The Taylors were also present for the entire project — except for during the last week.

Animal Planet covered up all the windows looking out into their backyard, and they had to promise not to peek, so the final reveal of the project would really be a surprise to them.

Participating in the TV show was an interesting experience, she said, especially seeing the behind-thescenes aspects of filming, Valerie Taylor said. Now, the couple gets recognized in public — and it’s fun.

“People come up to us, ‘We saw you on TV!’” Valerie Taylor said.

“Or someone will say, ‘Were you that lady on that pool show?’”

akewood Ranch Main Street was filled with vintage Volkswagens and 2015 edition sports cars the night of Aug. 4, for the monthly Lakewood Ranch Classic Car Show.

Every car owner has a story about how he or she became interested in restoring, rebuilding or buying a classic car. Owners and attendees examined the cars and exchanged anecdotes about their experiences.

arm summer temperatures didn’t stop the crowds from tapping their feet and singing along during East County’s signature free concert series Aug. 7. Music on Main attendees enjoyed a live performance by Smokey’s Session, a Sarasota-based band that specializes in classic rock, oldies and other genres.
