LAKEWOOD RANCH — Looking at the cream-colored home on Sandhills Place, it’s hard to notice any difference between it and its neighbors in the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club — aside from some missing mulch in the front flower beds and faded paint in a few not-too-obvious places.

But it is different: It’s the first home now owned, at least temporarily, by the community’s homeowners association, the Country Club/Edgewater Village Association.

“It’s the first house we’ve taken title to,” CEVA President Steve Peters said, noting the property

— Benderson Development’s vision to expand its University Town Center project, at the southwest corner of University Parkway and Interstate 75, can finally come to fruition, but the company will slow its growth plans slightly to ensure development does not outpace improvements to the area’s transportation network.

After nearly two hours of discussion June 30, Sarasota County commissioners unanimously approved Benderson’s plan to add 100,000 square feet of office and 600,000 square feet of retail within its University Town Center development of regional impact (also known as the Sarasota Interstate Park of Commerce project).

The public hearing was the third commissioners held regarding the project; they postponed votes twice to address concerns with mitigating wetlands and concerns that the extra development would further strain local roadways. (See sidebar).

“I think it’s a responsible plan, and it fits with the activities occurring within this area,” Commissioner Paul Caragiulo said.

The construction schedule requires Benderson to wait slightly longer than it would have liked, but it also allows for the completion of the Lakewood Ranch Boulevard extension, the diverging diamond interchange improveEAST

Prior to the meeting, Benderson agreed to cap construction at specific square footages annually (see sidebar). Those numbers, generally ranging between 1.7 million and 2.6 million square feet annually, reflect how much construction can be started, not how much will be completed.

Benderson and its consultants took a comprehensive look at the proposed improvements and construction schedule to determine their timeline, Mathes said.

“We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves,” Mathes said. “We’re

going to continue to report traffic (annually to the county). Staff will continue to verify conditions (in our agreement).”

Build time per structure ranges from one to two years, plus time for tenants to buildout their spaces. Most buildings will take at least 18 months to open from the time construction starts.

“We have a plan in place to develop this project responsibly,” Mathes said. “There’s tremendous demand for this space.”

Benderson hopes to have some new spaces open by the time Nathan Benderson Park hosts the World Rowing Championships in September 2017.

Emerging from the water is Pine Island, a 66-acre preserve owned by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) but maintained by Manatee County. And its future may be in limbo.

SWFWMD has proposed to deem the property as “surplus,” although the agency’s governing board has since removed it from the surplus list to engage in talks with Manatee. If designated as surplus, the land could be sold to another entity, although it would likely retain its protection as conservation land.

Environmental conservationists like the Ohlendorfs, who live on an acre in the Panther Ridge community, don’t want to see the property sold to developers and remain convinced the property still needs protection.

“It’s a bird sanctuary. It’s about time they stop development. It’s a beautiful island. People should be able to enjoy it in the future,” Carol Ohlendorf said.

Ken Frink, division director of operations, lands and resource monitoring for SWFWMD, agrees.

He said last year, the organization’s governing board asked staff to look at lands it owned that were not environmentally sensitive or were more appropriate for someone else to maintain, to review lands from a water management perspective, as well as for efficiencies. In May, staff told its governing board Pine Island Preserve was no longer needed for conservation purposes or other purposes of the district, hence the “surplus” designation. Frink said the term is misleading.

“Pine Island is extremely environmentally sensitive; it needs to be preserved,” he said. “But it’s an odd duck for us. It’s very remote for us. It’s not a regional project.

It needs to be owned and managed locally.”

Frink said SWFWMD can sell the property but maintain conservation easements over the property, or it could convey it to another governing body, such as Manatee County.

SWFWMD began gathering public input on the proposal in March, prompting an outpouring of public comments supporting conservation of the island.

At that time, Manatee County voted to reject the “surplus” designation, and Commission Chairwoman Betsy Benac followed up with a letter to SWFWMD’s governing board requesting the agency continue to own the property and have Manatee maintain it, citing the county’s progress in removing non-native plant species using staff, inmate and con-

tract labor. The county spends about $3,500 a year maintaining the property.

SWFWMD’s governing board has pulled the island off the surplus list, at least for now, and asked staff to work with Manatee County for a solution first. A meeting is scheduled for July 15.

A land swap could be an option, as well, but there does not appear to be an equitable exchange.

The Environmental Advisory Committee recommended conveying the property to Manatee or to the Audubon Coastal Island Sanctuaries Program.

SWFWMD’s board will discuss options at its August meeting.

The board could convey the land to Manatee County but may choose not to do so. Or, if Manatee County doesn’t want to assume title for the property, SWFWMD would ask the state if it would assume ownership, Frink said.

“If that fails, then it would go to public sale, but a conservation easement would be over it so it wouldn’t be developed,” he said.

“We hope it doesn’t get to that. It needs to be conserved.”

Manatee donation ordinance takes effect Manatee County’s new donation box ordinance took effect July 1, restricting boxes in unincorporated Manatee County to the grounds of private, nonprofit organizations.

“We want to allow (donation boxes) by regulating them in a responsible way so as not to create blight on properties, traffic safety issues because they’re being place in the right of ways and to prevent the unauthorized placement of them on properties,” said Jeff Bowman, Manatee’s code enforcement chief.

There are also new regulations to ensure the boxes don’t become airborn during strong winds.

The county can confiscate boxes placed in the right of way. If the box is not claimed in 30 days, the county can destroy it and its contents.

FDOT considers park signage Sarasota County officials and the Sarasota-Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization have worked with the Florida Department of Transportation to gain permission to erect signage along Interstate 75 promoting Nathan Benderson Park.

FDOT is agreeable to allowing signage for northbound and southbound directions, under certain conditions.

Sarasota County Administrator Thomas Harmer said last week that FDOT will try to incorporate the signage into its University Parkway/I-75 interchange project and that FDOT will design and fabricate the signs, but the county will need to get a permit for and fund installation of the signs.

Buchanan sets Manatee hours U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Longboat Key announced Friday that a member of his staff will hold open office hours in Manatee County.

Charlottesville, Va.-based Quad-C Management, a private equity firm that owns Dental Care Alliance, has sold the business to another investment company.

Dental Care Alliance, with a headquarters in Lakewood Ranch, was purchased by New Yorkbased private equity firm Harvest Partners, according to a release.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

EAST COUNTY — During the school year, a team of students at Haile Middle School spent nearly every spare minute working on technology designs and presentations.

But when school let out, students’ efforts only intensified.

Technology Student Association adviser Maureen Hudson created a technology camp, at which TSA students spent six hours a day honing their projects for national competition.

But,their efforts paid off.

Point totals show Haile’s TSA program ranked first nationally at the National Technology Student Association Championships, held June 28 to July 2, in Dallas, taking home 18 top 10 finishes, including four first-place trophies. “(Our goal) was to come home with as many trophies (as possible),” Hudson said, noting that only three of her 28 students had competed in nationals before.

Students from Nolan Middle School also captured top honors, with 21 top 10 finishes, including four first-place trophies.

had already been abandoned by its previous owners. “We knew this house was vacant, and there was no other recourse for us.”

CEVA placed a lien on the home when unpaid assessments hit $1,000 and began the foreclosure in December 2014; an online auction for the property in May yielded no bidders. So CEVA purchased the property for $500, court records show.

It took title to the home June 3.

Peters said the board has several options: own the home and do nothing but pay for electricity and perform other maintenance to prevent mold and other issues inside it; rent out the property and recover some costs (and potentially generate income); or sell the home at online auction, if the court permits it.

CEVA prefers the latter option, Peters said. It plans to petition the court for a second online auction because a buyer would assume the liability of the Bank of America mortgage, which is $338,000 plus interest, plus pay the $8,015.13 owed to CEVA. That option also would keep the board out of the property-management business.

“Our first preference was to have someone buy it (at auction).

We’d get our full value (of assessments owed),” he said.

CEVA has filed 11 foreclosure actions on properties; 10 of those concluded with an online sale of the property.

At its next board meeting in August, CEVA board members will discuss the possibility of renting the home out, along with other options, until Bank of America completes its foreclo-

Manatee County hopes a green light is heading its way.

The county’s Transportation Department has applied for a $1 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration for an adaptive signal control system to be installed along State Road 70 between Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and U.S. 41.

The technology is a software program that resides on the traffic signal controller and can make changes to the green time of the light based on real-time traffic, said Sage Kamiya, deputy director of traffic management for Manatee County.

“The current traffic signal programs we have out there are based off historic information we’ve collected over the years; it’s kind of a set volume,” Kamiya said, noting timing is generated based on the time of day, season and month, for example. “This (adaptive signal control) type of program allows the controller to make changes within reason.”

The county and the Florida Department of Transportation each would contribute about $200,000 in services, with Manatee installing the technology and

Kamiya said the county is targeting State Road 70 because the roadway would realize the most benefits. There are 20 traffic signals in the proposed stretch of roadway.

The highway administration reviews grant requests on an ongoing basis, and Manatee officials do not know when they will learn if their application has been granted. If it is, they hope to proceed as quickly as possible, but Kamiya said timing will be based on how quickly funds become available and the amount of time it will take the county to purchase equipment.

FDOT, in partnership with Sarasota and Manatee counties, is installing similar technologies along University Parkway, from Lakewood Ranch Boulevard east to the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport in a pilot program.

The $161,654 system will adjust signal timings based on real-time traffic demand instead of relying on preprogrammed signal timings at intersections and will allow the counties and FDOT to monitor the program’s effectiveness.

The technology is expected to be operational in November.

Lia Silber’s letters during summer 2014 described alarms sounding and the possibility of having to evacuate her home in Tel Mond, Israel.

“I heard an alarm in my house for the first time,” Lia wrote to her pen pal, Mill Creek resident Natalie Mount. “Where my grandpa and uncle live, there are two daily alarms.”

Natalie couldn’t relate to the chaotic political climate last year in the Middle East or the constant threat of danger. She worried when she didn’t hear from Lia for a few weeks.

But in the last year, as violence in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has become less frequent, the 13-year-old girls’ letters and friendship is changing.

Instead of asking Lia whether she is safe, Natalie now inquires about her pen pal’s summer vacation plans and what good books she has read lately.

“The biggest news I had was that I got two cats: Prince and Charming,” Natalie said. “But those are the kinds of things we can talk about now. We can talk about normal friend things again, and I don’t worry so much

if I don’t hear from her for a little while. I know normal life things happen.”

The girls met up June 13 for the first time since they became pen pals last year, when Natalie and her mother, Marni Mount, and other family members traveled with a group from Temple Emanu-El on a 10-day trip to Israel.

They visited Madatech, the Israel National Museum of Science, Technology and Space.

While they toured the exhibits, they talked nonstop about the happenings they forgot to write about over the last year.

“At first, I was quiet and didn’t know what to say,” Natalie said. “I had so much to say and so little at the same time, because we hadn’t seen each other in a year, but we talk all the time.”

The girls sparked their friendship when Lia came to visit Sarasota for a junior playwriting contest. During her trip, she attended Temple Emanu-El and met Natalie.

They became fast friends and began exchanging letters.

In the early stages of the pen pal relationship, Mount helped her daughter generate conversations with her new overseas friend.

Over time, Mount formed a relationship with Lia’s mother, Tali.

POWER OF THE PEN

Although Lia Silber and Natalie Mount could have just sent emails, the girls, both now 13, agreed receiving letters in the mail was exciting — even if it took two weeks for mail to travel more than 6,000 miles from East County to Israel.

They write letters once a month, depending on the time of year, but also email each other a few times a month in between letters.

“I notice when school starts, the letters aren’t coming in as much,” Natalie’s mother, Marni Mount said. “The girls get busy with school and their other friends.”

The mothers email each other monthly and also spent time together during the recent trip to Israel.

The Silber family has plans to visit the area again within the next few years and possibly stay with the Mounts.

Both girls are preparing to enter eighth grade. But after high school, the girls’ lives will likely take diverging paths.

Natalie plans to attend college and maybe study abroad for a semester in Israel.

But Lia will likely enlist in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) after high school. Israeli men serve a mandatory four years, and women serve for two years.

Both girls maintain hope for peace.

“My letters were sent back a lot more last year than they are now,” Natalie said. “Hopefully things continue to calm down and I won’t have to worry about Lia again, especially as we get older.”

ancy’s Bar-B-Q’s expansion onto Lakewood Ranch Main Street is sticking with the North Carolina slow-cooked recipe for which the restaurant is known.

But that’s no worry.

Owner Nancy Krohngold says she expects the new location to open in about eight weeks or by early September at the latest. She secured the space in October.

Booming business at the Pineapple Avenue location in Sarasota and catering have kept Krohngold busy. She also was waiting to buy out her partner’s stake in the Nancy’s name; that deal closed April 2, after several months of delays.

“I wanted to be out there. It took until April 2 for all the other pieces to fall into place,” Krohngold said. “We couldn’t start (design) or construction until after that happened.”

She said the Lakewood Ranch restaurant may not have Nancy’s signature outside look — the Pineapple Avenue location is an apple-red building with colorful landscaping and a tractor parked out front — but she hopes to make it look and feel like the original Nancy’s as much as possible, especially inside, where she will place her signature wooden bench-style tables to provide seating for guests who feast on barbecue while listening to blues music. There will be some outdoor dining available, as well.

“We’re going to do our best to bring the same look and feel and experience that people enjoy here downtown (Sarasota),” Krohngold said.

Krohngold said she gets at least 10 inquiries a day asking when the new space will open and is eager

to become the first barbecuefocused restaurant in Lakewood Ranch.

“I am thrilled I’m going to be in Lakewood Ranch,” she said. “It appears there are people in Lakewood Ranch ready to greet us with open arms. I knew, in my bones, the demand was out there.”

“I feel like we’ve really found a home,” Krohngold said. “It’s a mutual admiration — I love the Lakewood Ranch community, and the neighbors are so welcoming.”

Krohngold planned originally to open in a spot farther west on University Parkway, near The Mall at University Town Center, but those plans fell through after Benderson Development scrapped plans for the outparcel Nancy’s would occupy. She began negotiations with SchroederManatee Ranch subsidiary LWR Commercial almost immediately, in October.

Janus’ improvement stems on treatment, therapy The River Club resident has new reasons to be optimistic about recovering from a spinal chord injury.

— Nancy Janus still uses her motorized wheelchair, following a 2012 bicycle accident that left her with an incomplete spinal chord injury.

She still can’t get out bed on her own. And she still can’t lift her arms higher than her shoulders.

What has changed for the River Club resident and her husband, Brian Berry, is this: They have a new sense of hope.

The couple returned June 27 from a monthlong stay at the Stem Cell Institute in Panama, where Janus received stem cell injections and plenty of physical therapy. Janus traveled to Panama for treatment because there are no licensed stem cell treatments available in the United States at this time.

Doctors say Janus likely won’t see the effects of the treatment for at least three to six months, if she has any.

“The stem cells have to multiply in my body,” Janus said. “I went down there with high hopes, and I came back with high hopes

Friends, colleagues and others donated more than $35,000 through a crowdfunding page to pay for Janus’ treatment, flight, hotel and other expenses.

Janus’ and Berry’s adventure began May 31, when a driver picked them up at the airport and took them to their hotel nearby. The following day, they met Janus’ attending physician, Dr. Cindy Leu, to learn what the days ahead would bring.

Generally, Janus would start each morning with a trip to the gym for physical therapy. Then in the afternoons on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, a driver would transport Janus to the institute for an intravenous injection of stem cells or a combination of intravenous plus an intrathecal injection — one directly into the spinal column. Janus would sit on the exam table, leaning forward as Leu prepared the site and explained what was happening and what to expect at each part of the process. When she finished, she’d cover the injection site with a nickel-sized bandage.

receive stem cell therapy, she’d stay at the hotel to rest, often plagued by a severe backache — a possible side effect of treatment.

When Janus suffered an unexplained 101-degree fever following one treatment, Leu personally called her two hours.

“I always knew what was happening,” Janus said. “They obviously believe strongly in what they were doing.”

Even from a month ago, Berry sees the differences in his wife — her hands move more freely now and she’s stronger — that Janus herself can’t. He attributes the improvement to continued physical therapy but remains optimistic the treatments will work.

However, doctors say continued exercise and therapy will play a key role in the success of Janus’ treatment. Janus plans to do physical therapy three times weekly.

lot has happened since Marla Doss joined the team at Community Haven for Adults and Children Disabilities 30 years ago: She got married, had a child and survived a battle with cancer. But she’s also watched the organization transform from a centerbased program to one that serves the community as a whole.

As CHAC’s president and CEO, Doss oversaw the rezoning of CHAC’s campus last year and the start of construction on a new group home for disabled adults.

In the coming years, she’ll focus on raising funds to pay for a Haven Industries building, another group home and a senior center, among other projects, to meet the future needs of individuals with disabilities.

Individuals with disabilities are so much more a part of our communities (than they were 30 years ago). They are employed in local businesses and industries and are residents in our local neighborhoods.

As recently as 10 to 15 years ago, disabled individuals were in sheltered institutional settings, with little to no opportunity to enjoy our communities.

1:57 a.m. — Intersection of Lena Road and State Road 64 East Domestic Disturbance: A woman and her son argued because she will not let him see his father. The son ran away without his mother’s permission to his father’s house and was upset when police told him he had to go with his mother.

When the woman stopped for gas, the son ran across the road into the woods. The son was taken to his grandparents’ home.

6:13 a.m. — 3800 block of 62nd Street East Motor Vehicle Theft: A woman woke up and discovered her vehicle was stolen from her driveway.

Three other unlocked vehicles had been ransacked, although nothing was reported stolen. St. Petersburg police recovered the vehicle after the suspects fled the scene and crashed.

“It’s pickin’ and drinking and socializing; that’s what makes it fun,” he added. “People now think of it as an annual party.”

The menu consists of new options such as “smack-yourmama collard greens” and garlic-cheddar beer bread, as well as event staples — Boudin sausage, muffalettas, cornmeal-crusted catfish, Zatarain’s boiled shrimp with sweetcorn and andouille sausage and crawfish corn dogs.

Guests will sit at community tables, covered with newspapers.

Broussard, Klauber’s relative by marriage, is eager to greet old and new friends alike. In fact, he already has 20 people planning to sit with him.

“We’re going to need two tables,” he said.

Reservations for the event are required. Klauber hopes at least 300 will attend.

Rising to the top

Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics’ Derrian Gobourne strengthens her physical and mental toughness to compete on a national level.

errian Gobourne runs through the day’s goals in her mind. Top of that list: finally landing the double-double dismount off the uneven bars.

The 15-year-old Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics gymnast tightens the bright orange grips around her wrists before applying a fresh layer of chalk to each of her palms.

With her teammates looking on, Gobourne hoists herself onto the lower bar and quickly begins swinging her legs back and forth in time to the steady stream of encouraging words reverberating throughout the gym.

“Come on, ‘D!’” one gymnasts shouts. “You got this!” another one echoes.

In a flourish, Gobourne twists, turns and flips herself around, maneuvering back and forth between the two bars with ease, before swiftly dismounting off the apparatus.

“The endurance you have to have makes it tough when you’re trying to learn new skills,” Gobourne says. “It’s hard to learn really tough skills on bars.”

A similar scene will play out periodically throughout the three-and-a-half-hour training session July 1, as the Level 10 gymnast seeks to nail her double-

double dismount — one of many goals she has set for herself.

Before the competitive season began in December, Gobourne wrote a specific goal for each apparatus, which she keeps on a piece of paper in her gymnastics locker. She looks at the list every day before she heads into the gym to train.

It’s an approach Gobourne, who spends three and a half hours five mornings a week at the gym, began using as a way to channel positive energy into each workout.

Gobourne’s goals include the double-double dismount off the uneven bars; a Yurchenko double full on vault; landing her full more consistently on floor; and a switch leap popa on balance beam.

“The hardest part about gymnastics is the mental toughness,” Gobourne says. “I feel like if you’re not mentally tough, it’s not going to get you anywhere. I know I can physically do it, but, mentally, I have to build myself up more.”

Gobourne’s ability to focus on what she can do proved valuable during the 2015 U.S. Women’s National Junior Olympic Championships May 15 and May 16 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Gobourne was one of seven gymnasts from the southeastern region to qualify for the national competition, which showcases the country’s top Level 10 Junior Olympic gymnasts. Level 10 is the highest level a gymnast can reach in the Junior Olympic program, which is just under the elite level.

Gobourne posted a total combined all-around score of 37.800 to finish tied for 13th out of the 57 competitors in the Level 10 Junior C division. The roughly 460 competitors at this year’s national championships were divided into eight age divisions.

Gobourne scored a pair of top 10 finishes on uneven bars (9.475, tied for ninth), which is her best event, and the vault (9.650, tied for 10th). She also scored a 9.475 on floor exercise to tie for 11th and a 9.200 on the balance beam to tie for 36th.

Gobourne hit all four of her routines, which was what she had hoped for heading into the meet.

“I don’t really have a reaction to anything,” Gobourne says. “I don’t think anything fully hits me.”

Unlike most of her teammates, who began training when they were 3 or 4 years old, Gobourne didn’t start taking gymnastics until she was 7 years old.

Gobourne joined a tumbling class at South Florida Gymnastics and gradually began working her way up through the system.

By the time she reached Level 7, Gobourne realized she might have a future in the sport.

“When I first started, I was doing easy skills and just playing around, but when Level 7 came around I actually had to start learning some stuff,” Gobourne says.

Gobourne moved over to Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics about three years ago. She quickly rose to Level 10, where she has spent the past three seasons.

“Ever since she walked through the doors of Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics, she’s been an absolute joy,” Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics co-owner and coach Laura Parraga says. “She’s a coach’s dream. Not only is she naturally talented but beyond that she has a great internal drive to challenge herself and learn.”

forced her to re-evaluate her dream. After talking with Parraga, Gobourne decided to return to the gym and come back even stronger in hopes of landing a college scholarship.

Last summer, Gobourne verbally committed to Auburn University. In mid-June, Gobourne attended Auburn’s gymnastics camp, where she had the opportunity to work with her future coaches and teammates.

“I feel grateful that I can continue to do what I like to do in college,” Gobourne says. “It just looks really fun and so much better than what we do.”

With her competitive season behind her, Gobourne will spend the next five months training before returning to competition in December.

“She always wants to learn new and harder tricks,” Parraga says.

“She’s worked hard to achieve her dreams, and she’s just a fun presence in the gym. She brings a fun energy and she lightens the mood a lot.

“She’s always smiling, and that tells me she’s happy and healthy in what she’s doing,” Parraga says.

Manasota Monsters defend their turf

F

our Manasota Monsters lacrosse teams won championships at the annual Rippin’ at the Ranch lacrosse tournament June 27 and June 28, at the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch.

Nearly 50 of the top teams from across the state, ranging in age from U9 to high school, participated in this year’s tournament.

The Monsters U9 (5-0), U11 (6-0), U13 A (6-0) and U15 (6-0) all won their respective divisions. The Monsters U13 B team went 3-1-1 to finish third in Group 3.

he Lakewood Ranch YMCA Wave Runners held their 2nd annual Duel in the Pool swim meet June 13.

About 55 members of the swim team participated in the meet, which helped raise money for the YMCA’s scholarship fund. Following the meet, swimmers and their families enjoyed a team cookout.

Little League All-Stars swing for the fences in tournaments

T

he Braden River and Lakewood Ranch Little League All-Star teams competed in their respective District 26 Little League All-Star tournaments, which began June 24 and ran through July 2.

The Lakewood Ranch Little League Majors All-Stars won the district title, defeating Buffalo Creek 22-0 and 10-0. The team will now move on to the Section 4 tournament July 17 through July 19, in Lake Wales.

The Lakewood Ranch Little League 9/10 All-Stars went 2-2, while the Braden River Little League 9/10 Intermediate and Junior All-Stars both went 0-2.

Manatee County Chamber makes powerful connections

T

he Manatee County Chamber of Commerce's July Power Luncheon brought out a flurry of business cards and people.

Catered by Sonny's BBQ, the luncheon welcomed new and old chamber members July 1, at the chamber office.

"Networking is the main purpose," said Leigh Weger, executive assistant to the membership development department of the chamber. "Everyone gets the opportunity to stand up and introduce their business. It's a great way for new members to get to know the chamber."

Jahna Leinhauser, vice president of community development at the chamber, launched the introductory talks by reminding businesses to do business with one another when possible.

"We want to promote buying local," she said.

— Lakewood Ranch resident Jeff Meyer will take Lakewood Ranch entrepreneurs through a business transformation July 15, as he shares about Feld’s evolution from a small family business — a record store in the Washington, D.C., area — to a global giant in the entertainment industry.

Meyer, Feld’s senior vice president of event marketing and sales for North America, will speak to the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance July 15, at the Polo Grill and Bar, 10670 Boardwalk Loop.

Meyer manages six regions within the North American territory and oversees more than 100 in-house marketing and sales professionals responsible for promoting all Feld properties playing in 175 markets. Feld produces shows such as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Monster Jam, Marvel Universe LIVE! and Disney on Ice. Meyer has been with Feld for 28 years. He started with the company as regional marketing director in 1987. During his tenure, Meyer’s leadership has helped grow the business domestically from playing 160 annual engagements to more than 800 — about 3,200 total performances.

“I’ve seen a family-run operation grow to what it is today and seen the ups and downs along the way,” Meyer said of Feld. “I hope to give people some history of Feld Entertainment, how it started, really with the rock-and-roll era, and walk through the music industry and how that built our business.”

Meyer said one of the company’s unique selling strategies is its focus on the long term.

“Our decisions are made looking to the future,” he said. “We’re not beholden to quarterly stock reports. It allows us to make decisions in a little bit different way.

I think that applies to anybody.

Short-term decisions are not always the best.”

Meyer and his family moved in summer 2013 to Lakewood Ranch, when Feld relocated its corporate headquarters to a roughly 600,000-square-foot building in Palmetto.
