Steve Rinehart said the Lightning will win in six. The next game is 8 p.m. Friday in Montreal.

Don’t just wing it Lakewood Ranch woman gets help to save an injured baby blue jay.

L

isa Laufenberg was walking along Greenbrook Boulevard on May 28 when she spotted a baby blue jay that was struggling in the grass.

Laufenberg scanned the surrounding area for a nest or parent without any luck.

She wondered if she could help.

Her mind raced between taking action and letting nature run its course. She knew baby birds require very particular care, so she would have to be committed to the task if she wanted to try to save the bird.

She decided to do her best to keep the bird alive.

More than a month later, because of Laufenberg’s actions, the blue jay is thriving. After rescuing the bird, Laufenberg took it to Save Our Seabirds, a wild bird education and rescue center on Sarasota’s City Island.

Save Our Seabirds Operations Manager Jocelyn Shearer said it appears the bird was born in early to mid-May. Its flight feathers will grow in soon, and then the bird will be moved to the larger aviary to make sure it’s a strong flier. Most birds only require a week in the aviary before they can be released into the wild.

INJURED BIRD TIPS

Shearer said Laufenberg did a good job in the time between rescuing the bird and transporting it to Save Our Seabirds. The first thing Laufenberg did was pick the bird up. Shearer said a lot of people mistakenly believe if a person touches a bird, its parent won’t take it back. This is an old myth.

When Laufenberg picked up the bird, she noticed its body was cool. She hoped her hands would warm it up and later placed it in a box with a towel, setting the box in her garage because it’s the warmest room in her house.

Shearer said Laufenberg’s choices in this case were good ones. Injured birds should be placed in a setting as warm, dark and quiet as possible. They should also be handled as little as possible.

“Let’s say they’ve hit a window, and they’re stunned,” Shearer said. “It might take them a day or two to recover. If people are petting them, it would be like if you were paralyzed, and then there’s a giant predator playing with you.”

Laufenberg researched what she should feed the bird and made a mixture of sugar water and canned cat food as soupy as she could, using a syringe to insert it into the bird’s mouth.

Shearer said she doesn’t recommend people feed birds, even baby ones that need constant nutrition, unless they’re being talked through it by experts at bird rescues or similar organizations. Feeding a bird can sometimes do more harm than good.

— they have a good heart, and they have good intentions — but they’ll find a little bird that’s abandoned, and then they’ll start feeding it,” Shearer said. “They’ll feed it something inappropriate. Then three days later, they’ll be kind of tired of it chirping at them, and they’ll bring it to us, and now it’s in poor health.”

While grocery shopping, Laufenberg ran into a friend who suggested she take the bird to Save Our Seabirds. Shearer said Wildlife Inc., an education and

rehabilitation center in Bradenton Beach, might be closer to some East County residents.

Laufenberg said she was glad her friend recommended Save Our Seabirds. “(Shearer) gently suggested that they had more experience and probably would have better luck with this baby bird than I did, which makes total sense,” Laufenberg said.

Here are tips from Save Our Seabirds Operations Manager Jocelyn Shearer on helping an injured bird: n Start by calling a bird rescue center, such as Save Our Seabirds or Wildlife Inc. Representatives can say what steps need to be taken. n If possible, try to contain the bird.

For example, if a juvenile red heron appears to be injured, you could try ushering it into a lanai. n Place the bird in a warm, dark and quiet location. n If in your home, place a laundry basket, sheet or box with air ventilation over the bird. n Do not give the bird anything to eat or drink. This often makes the situation worse.

An exception can be made for baby birds, which need to eat often, only if the direction for what to feed them comes directly from an expert. n Limit interaction with the bird as much as possible.

POWER sparks development debate Myakka City and rural residents form group to monitor growth in Manatee County.

yakka City resident Kim Seery had seen it before.

Land issues involving property east of Interstate 75 have come before Manatee County commissioners. Residents would show up and emotionally describe how they didn’t want urban sprawl to push east and how they had moved to rural communities to stay away from it.

“That’s completely understandable when you feel like you’re fighting to protect your livelihood, what you’ve worked for,” Seery said.

However, Seery and a group of Myakka City residents have decided fighting development with emotional pleas isn’t the best approach to slow down the sprawl. So they started a nonprofit in April called Protect Our Wildlife Environment and Resources.

POWER was created to be an organized voice to unite and represent those who want to preserve the county’s rural and agricultural communities. POWER President T.J. Meneely said emotion can be good, but it has to be harnessed into something productive and logical. The organization has spoken with all seven commissioners.

Meneely said before POWER, there hasn’t been a representative group for the Myakka City area that commissioners and developers could speak with on topics related to the area.

He said the organization was not created to amplify the message that rural residents in the county don’t like development.

He said development is coming east whether they want it or not. Rather, POWER was created to work with commissioners and developers to find practical solutions to urban sprawl and to ensure smart development that preserves the country lifestyle.

“The reality is that change is inevitable, but if you don’t have representation, and you don’t have a seat at the table, then you have no voice,” Meneely said.

She was impressed with the research he had done and his willingness to work with developers and commissioners to create plans for development that rural residents can accept. She said using logic and talking to commissioners about what does and doesn’t work for Myakka City and the surrounding area is a more effective strategy than rejecting all forms of development.

“That’s the way it should be done, not us against them,” Whitmore said. “T.J. realized this and probably sees the writing on the wall. He wants to figure out a way that they can be part of the solution and not just come up here angrily and do their thing.”

Whitmore said creating an overlay for Myakka City could help ensure development occurs in a way that preserves the area’s rural feel. She said Myakka City residents in the past have said they don’t need one, but Meneely was interested in the idea.

An overlay is a special zoning district created to establish standards and criteria for what can be done on properties within the special district. The standards for development in many overlays are stricter than they would otherwise be.

Meneely said creating an overlay for Myakka City would be more effective at ensuring smart development than the Future Development Area Boundary line, which is in effect through 2040.

He said the latter has been moved before and lends itself more easily to text amendments that, taken individually, seem like mere exceptions to the rule. If a handful of developers each are granted an exception, Meneely said, the line has essentially been moved.

An overlay, on the other hand, would be much more specific.

Meneely said an overlay could help establish criteria that would ensure any development in the Myakka City area would be as compatible as possible with a country lifestyle.

said, ‘No, we would never want a Walmart out there,’ I don’t know that that’s the case. Is it that we would allow a certain number of acres to be used toward that as long as they’re close to high-volume thoroughfares? That sounds more reasonable.”

Manatee County’s comprehensive plan currently prohibits development consisting of more than one house per 5 acres in most cases. Meneely said any increase to that density would be difficult to accept.

“You can’t keep leveling this county,” Meneely said. “Things are going to get built. We get that, but do you want to forever change the landscape of Manatee County because people have money, and they can buy land, and people want to move here? People aren’t going to want to continue to move here if you keep doing that.”

However, Meneely said it might make sense to allow the construction of residential communities with slightly higher densities on the conditions that developers be required to design the homes in a way that is environmentally friendly, compatible with the country lifestyle and maintains a certain amount of green space and preserved land. Such conditions could be included in an overlay.

“If we can put language together, between the residents and the developers, that satisfies to a certain degree — it’s never going to satisfy both sides — but at least some common ground, then wouldn’t that be a win-win situation?” Meneely said. “Instead of it just being one-sided, Myakka wants nothing, developers want everything, and it’s just a war.

Nobody wants that. That doesn’t help anybody.”

Even though rural residents and developers might have conflicting interests, POWER Public Relations Director Meredith Barcomb said there is enough com-

mon ground to work together.

For example, she said developers don’t want their homebuyers to get sick of sitting in traffic or worry about environmental problems, such as runoff into Lake Manatee.

“You have a landowner that has millions of dollars to gain,” Barcomb said. “You have a developer who has millions of dollars to make. Then you have us, and we have our property. We’re coming to them trying to figure out what we can offer them, what we can do and what they can do, to negotiate the situation and come up with a neutral understanding and happy medium.”

POWER has 330 members two months after it was formed. Barcomb said POWER has two meetings per month that are open to all members and are also available on Facebook Live. The best ways to get involved with the organization are to visit POWERManasota.org or the group’s Facebook page.

The group has made yard signs it sells to raise funds that say “Hold the line,” a reference to the FDAB line, with the organization’s website on them. It also sells T-shirts, and other fundraisers are in the works. A motorcycle rally is one possibility.

Seery, the group’s treasurer, said she has begun going door to door to spread word of the organization and its purpose. So far, she has talked to about 30 people, which she said is a large number in Myakka City. About 25 of them were unaware of the impending development and land decisions made by commissioners that will affect their area.

Although the group started in response to development moving closer to Myakka City, the group eventually hopes to expand and work with people from rural and agricultural communities across Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Greenbrook’s Mark Thacker and his sons, 13-year-old Brahm and 11-year-old Cannon, didn’t do anything for the Fourth of July last year.

Normally, the holiday is all about fireworks, traveling and boat races for the Thacker family, but the COVID-19 pandemic shut down most of those events in 2020.

This year, the Thackers are taking advantage of the opportunity to do things they couldn’t during the pandemic, such as traveling out of state and setting off fireworks themselves.

They aren’t the only East County residents excited to get back to the usual July 4 festivities.

Other Lakewood Ranch residents are making party plans and figuring out where to watch fireworks.

But if you’re planning to buy your own fireworks like the Thackers, be warned. There could be a shortage.

Sky King Fireworks Managing Partner Dustin Luer said his industry, like many others, has dealt with some supply issues because of the pandemic. Luer said the fireworks shortage started because there wasn’t enough labor in American ports to unload containers and products.

As a result, Luer said he expects to have fewer fireworks to dole out.

Luer’s shop is in Sarasota.

Fireworks sales are prohibited in Manatee County except to those licensed to have or deal them. The use of most fireworks, except by those with display permits, is prohibited in Manatee County.

Certain fireworks, such as sparklers and those that don’t leave the ground, are allowed.

Despite the ordinance, Manatee County residents know the use fireworks at a home setting is common July 4. The home shows could be a little dimmer this year due to the shortage.

“The advice that we’re trying to portray is to shop early,” Luer said. “If people are coming for a specific item they’ve bought year over year, that particular item this year might not be in stock. There might be a comparable item, but a lot of people want the same thing that they’ve had before. It’s something they remember.”

The Green lands anchor restaurant Tsunami Sushi and Hibachi Grill will serve as an anchor business in the Lakewood Ranch plaza.

T

sunami Sushi and Hibachi Grill Owner Sam Ray has a grand vision for his Lakewood Ranch location, which he hopes to open in the center of The Green by the end of the year.

The first floor will be familyfriendly and a bit more casual.

Ray is planning to add a top floor to the building, which would be a high-end dining experience, similar to Sarasota’s Michael’s On East or Longboat Key’s Euphemia Haye Restaurant, complete with an event space and a party room.

He plans to blend elements of a high-end sushi restaurant and high-end steakhouse.

There will be a lounge bar with live music being a staple. Ray said he wants to bring in a baby piano to help set the restaurant’s atmosphere.

The news of Tsunami’s impending arrival was music to the ears of businesses located near Tsunami and the other cornerstone store now scheduled to open, BurgerFi. The two corner units, located at the heart of The Green shopping plaza, have long been vacant.

Bojan Miocic has been working a few doors down from the future Tsunami and BurgerFi since his store opened 19 months ago. He said the new restaurants could attract more foot traffic to his store and the shopping plaza as a whole in the evening. He said his store brings in many customers during the day but sees a sharp drop as the afternoon winds down.

“Given that those are vacant now, it can drive so many more customers into the complex and see what we have to offer,” Miocic said. “That evening crowd, once they’re finished eating, they just want to explore what we have to offer.”

Miocic said his store benefited greatly when Winn-Dixie opened and that opening two big restaurants could have a similar effect.

As of now, Miocic said many of the customers who come to The Green don’t see his store.

Lavish Nails & Spa Assistant Manager Nina Tran said the new restaurants will be good for business. She knows from experience.

It’s what happened when another popular restaurant, Keke’s Breakfast Cafe, opened at The Green.

“The more businesses we have, the more clients come in,” Tran said.

She said it was frustrating to watch two large units in the center of the plaza go unfilled for so long, especially when a “coming soon” sign went up in October 2018 for a restaurant called Irish 31 Pub & Eatery, which changed its mind about the spot after the space sat open for two years.

Sirius Day Spa Director Maria Dietz said her spa’s position on the plaza’s middle street will present a prime opportunity to attract people who came to eat at Tsunami or BurgerFi. “When something’s new in town, people always want to explore,” Dietz said. “It might not necessarily be someone that lives in our exact vicinity, but they’re coming, and when they come, they’re going to walk around. The convenience of the entire plaza is that one stop. I can just park my car, and I can do five of my errands right now, have a wonderful din-

ner, get my spa treatments and have my dog groomed.”

Dietz has 42 employees, and she said they’re always looking for new places to eat. Tran loves sushi, so she is particularly excited to try Tsunami.

Attracting local employees is part of the vision for Tsunami, Ray said. He wants to build a restaurant where people come to relax and drink cocktails after work or grab a beer and simply hang out at 11 p.m., and he added that he wants to do it in a new-age setting that incorporates sunlight and vibrant colors.

“It will have bonsai trees,” Ray said. “It will be like a modern Zen garden.”

Ray said the restaurant will be

open for lunch, dinner and latenight food, with different menus for each. The restaurant will make Asian-inspired cocktails, including teas, sake and Japanese whiskey. It will also provide local beers.

Ray and General Manager Jeffrey Karasawa said there is a lack of high-end dining opportunities in Lakewood Ranch, and they want to fill the void. Karasawa said they get a lot of customers at the Sarasota location who say Tsunami is desperately needed in Lakewood Ranch.

“They say, ‘When are you opening up (in Lakewood Ranch)?” he said. “People already want to start making reservations. … The hype is there.”

After investigating claims that Manatee County Commissioner Vanessa Baugh “misused her public position, was guilty of official misconduct and misused confidential information,” the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office released a report June 28 saying none of Baugh’s actions connected to a special vaccination clinic in Lakewood Ranch in February rose to the level of a crime.

“From the point we received this complaint, our goal was to conduct a very thorough investigation,” Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells said in a release. “We spent countless hours on this, focusing not only on the statutes mentioned in the complaint but also examining whether other laws were possibly broken. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office release stated, “After nearly four months, numerous interviews and a review of hundreds of documents, investigators concluded that none of Baugh’s actions rose to the level of a crime.”

Baugh was relieved at the news.

“I am thankful the Sheriff’s Office concluded what it did,” Baugh said. “There was no criminal intent. My concern was to get shots in people’s arms.”

The 113-page report was forwarded to the Florida Commission on Ethics, per its request.

The Sheriff’s Office stated in the release that “no other comments will be made in reference to this investigation at this time due to the ongoing ethics investigation.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis had contacted Schroeder-Manatee Ranch CEO and President Rex Jensen in February in an attempt to facilitate the distribution of 3,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, above Manatee County’s normal allotment. Jensen went to Baugh, who eventually worked out the distribution at Premier Sports Campus. The vaccinations were available to only those in the 34202 and 34211 ZIP codes.

Additionally,

while it appears she did not readily make it known to her fellow commissioners, there is no evidence to suggest that, in regard to the Premier Sports Campus vaccination event, Baugh concealed, covered up, destroyed, mutilated or altered any official records or documents. (By having a new registrant pool created), Baugh did not alter the original pool.

“Finally, no underlying felony exists to substantiate the indictment of official misconduct. Rex Jensen, Lawrence Jensen, Marie Keehn, Robert Keehn and Baugh herself all purported to have neither given nor received anything of value in return for being placed on the ‘VIP’ list to receive the vaccine, and nothing of evidentiary value has been discovered to suggest otherwise.”

The report went on to say, “This investigation has uncovered no evidence demonstrative of Baugh receiving any tangible benefit, pecuniary or otherwise.”

Long waitlist sparks growth Lakewood Ranch’s Beyond the Spectrum will add 2,500 square feet of space to address its growing waitlist of students.

n this particular day, Sharon Pannone, the development director at Beyond the Spectrum, received two phone calls, an email and a message on social media from people hoping to send their child to the nonprofit education and therapy center for children with autism spectrum disorder and related diagnoses.

All Pannone could do was inform the families of other resources and put them on a waitlist for acceptance to Beyond the Spectrum.

“We are bursting at the seams,” Pannone said.

Pannone said that in April the nonprofit had 30 children on the waitlist for each of its three programs.

Work on a 2,500-square-foot expansion to Beyond the Spectrum’s current facility at 7333 International Place, Lakewood Ranch, began June 28 and is expected to allow Beyond the Spectrum to expand its enrollment by 10 to 95 students. The expansion is expected to be completed in August.

The extra space will provide an office, eight therapy rooms and additional space for students in the Mariposa program to learn life skills.

“I’m looking forward to being able to definitely serve more families in the community that are in need,” said Lora Carpenter,

the nonprofit’s executive director.

“It’ll improve the quality of the services we’re providing. We’re working on making our programs more meaningful. The curriculums and offering the life skills is going to be impactful.”

Beyond the Spectrum’s Applied Behavioral Therapy Clinic, which provides Applied Behavior Analysis services, will move into the new space, making more room for the Mariposa program in the existing space. Applied Behavior Analysis is a therapeutic approach that targets maladaptive behaviors and replaces them with appropriate behavior.

will receive funding through grants to cover some of the cost of the $100,000 expansion, but the rest of the funding will come from donations and fundraising.

She said the nonprofit will set up a capital fund for the project because all the donations and fundraising usually go toward paying for therapies and curriculum.

Pannone said the nonprofit is expecting the need for education and therapeutic services will continue to grow, especially after the pandemic.

“I think (the pandemic) pulled back a veil for some of these families to realize their children’s needs weren’t being met once they had them at home,” Pannone said.

The nonprofit is having a dip in the grass area behind its parking lot filled in to make the ground level so that a playground can be added. The nonprofit currently has to block off the street with cones so students can play on the side of its facility.

Carpenter is hoping the nonprofit can add mental health counseling for its students after seeing more students demonstrate symptoms of anxiety and depression, some of which resulted from the pandemic.

Carpenter and Pannone said the nonprofit’s long-term goal is to move to a different facility that can accommodate its needs so it can expand its services.

Pannone said the staff wants to start an adult day center for those who are older than 22 and cannot get a job or be on their own due to their disability.

“We’ve had to realize we’re not primarily going to be a short stop,” Carpenter said. “For some families, we are a lifelong option, and we want to be a lifelong option for them.”

It could be years before Beyond the Spectrum is able to move because the move could cost about $1.5 million, Pannone said.

Ranch’s draw lands another restaurant T

he arrival of Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant, which opened June 28, is more proof of the drawing power of Lakewood Ranch.

Those driving along Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, which was extended south to Fruitville Road in March 2020, will find the new “upscale casual” restaurant on the boulevard just before it intersects with Fruitville Road.

Although the address officially will be Sarasota, the Lakewood Ranch sprawl southward with the Waterside development is a big reason Cooper’s Hawk chose the location at 3130 Fruitville Commons Blvd., Sarasota.

“I was on the committee when we researched this site, and we knew about Lakewood Ranch,” said Tom Koenigsberg, the chief operating officer for Cooper’s Hawk. “We see this as an up-and-coming area. There is a lot of interest in wine. There are great incomes. The retail is developing here.

“And there are great people.”

There will be lots of people close to the new restaurant.

Schroeder-Manatee Ranch’s Southshore project has been crawling its way through Sarasota County permitting and is nearing the finish line. Build-

ers are ready, though, to start construction as soon as Sarasota County signs off on the project, which is part of the county’s requirement for community/ affordable housing.

While the Southshore project — built along the shore of three lakes, including Kingfisher Lake, which hosts the entertainment hub of Waterside Place — will include 870 homes, the entire Waterside project was planned to have 5,144 residential units and 390,000 square feet of commercial, office and retail space on 5,490 acres. Those approvals came from Sarasota County in 2014.

When Cooper’s Hawk began looking at the area, not much existed on Fruitville Road just east of Interstate 75. With the knowledge Lakewood Ranch was building closer to Fruitville Road and with the Sarasota County urban sprawl headed east, it was perfect for the restaurant.

“This is what we call a greenfield project,” Koenigsberg said.

“Everything builds around you.”

Cooper’s Hawk General Manager Pedro Torres said the area is perfect.

“Restaurants often go to high traffic areas, such as UTC,” he said. “We look for areas where

we can create community. If you come to us, we are going to wow you.”

Simply put, the restaurant doesn’t see the necessity to pay the premium needed to say it’s a Lakewood Ranch restaurant or a UTC restaurant.

Torres said the area around the restaurant is still beginning to be developed and “that is our sweet spot.”

From State Road 64 to Fruitville Road, Lakewood Ranch has just a handful of restaurants that would be considered fine dining. Cooper’s Hawk will add to lineup.

“There are no white tablecloths, but this is fine dining,” Koenigsberg said. “We wanted to make it look approachable.”

It is the 13th site in Florida for

Cooper’s Hawk, but the closest one to the Sarasota location is Tampa.

The restaurant, which has 135 employees, includes an outdoor dining area, a tasting room and a wine store. All the food on the menu is “made from scratch.”

Yes, Lakewood Ranch means plenty of people with nice incomes, but it also means expectations rise as does the competition.

A whole lotta shakin’ Florida Studio Theatre performance showcases rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis’ career.

imi Hendrix torched his guitar at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Cool pyrotechnics, but not entirely original.

Jerry Lee Lewis had incinerated an entire piano at Alan Freed’s Big Beat Show at the Brooklyn Paramount in 1958.

The motive? Pure spite. By contract, Chuck Berry closed the show after Lewis’ penultimate act. Lewis decided to upstage him. A match and a Coke bottle filled with gasoline did the trick.

“I want to see you follow that, Chuck.” Berry didn’t even try.

“Great Balls of Fire” captures a host of such musical moments in Lewis’ incendiary career on the Florida Studio Theatre cabaret stage. This revue is the brainchild of Jason Cohen (the lead performer) and Michael Schiralli. Cohen first began channeling Lewis during the national tour of “Million Dollar Quartet,” a tribute to the legendary day when Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley all wound up together in the Sun Records recording studio.

After the “Million Dollar” tour terminated, Cohen dropped the Jerry Lee Lewis character. But he didn’t feel like dropping Lewis’ music. That led to a gutsy creative decision.

Simply put, Cohen stopped bleaching his hair blond. He’d go back on tour and keep banging out the Killer’s hits in a new, original revue called “Great Balls of Fire.” But he’d do it as

himself, not in the Jerry Lee Lewis persona. Peroxide would be the commercial, exploitative, sell-out, inauthentic, easy, smart choice. Authenticity was the right choice. Bravo.

Cohen’s touring band is composed of Justin Brown (saxophone), Luke Darnell (lead guitar), Nathan Yates Douglass (double bass) and Jon Rossi (drums). These talented musicians all play multiple instruments and sing as well, but that gives you a general idea.

The revue kicks off with “Good Golly Miss Molly,” Little Richard’s 1956 hit and the first of many double entendres. Cohen follows it up with “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” Bill Haley’s smash from 1954. (Here, the double meaning refers to throwing dice, if Wikipedia is not a liar.)

made famous by The Beatles in 1963. A medley of tunes from the Big Easy gives a nod to Lewis’ roots. He’s a proud, native son of Louisiana, and it shows.

The second act opens with “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” (1955) — the third double entendre, if my count is accurate. The revue taps into Lewis’ country roots with Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome

I Could Cry” (1949) and goes deeper with a medley of spiritual selections. Cohen and the band open their hymn books to “I’ll Fly Away,” “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and “I Shall Not Be Moved.” Yes, Lewis was raised in the old-time religion — though he gave his soul to rock ‘n’ roll. In the 1950s, Jimmy Swaggart, Lewis’ double-first cousin, was a budding Pente-

costal evangelist confined to tents and not TV. He crusaded against Lewis and other rockers for playing “the devil’s music.” Lewis kept on playing, though he feared there’d be hell to pay.

Lewis’ “High School Confidential” is a sweet as a malted milkshake. (The song takes on a cringe-worthy meaning, granted Lewis’ marriage to his 13-yearold cousin.) Cohen saves “Great Balls of Fire” for last. His performance is not only energetic; it’s downright athletic. The man jumps up on the pounds the keys upside-down, backwards and every which way. When that gets old, he kicks out chords with one foot. Cohen doesn’t literally set the piano fire. Metaphorically, it’s toast.

Manic movement is the key to Lewis’ music. Cohen’s tribute plays in that key. That’s why it feels like the real deal.

Hyperactive children are repeatedly commanded to sit still.

Some obey — and go on to lead lives of quiet desperation. Others disobey — and grow up to be rock stars. I’m confident Lewis was one of the latter. Cohen is definitely another.

This cabaret concert gives each of his bandmates a slice of the spotlight. Douglass lays down a funky, bluesy groove on the har-

monica in Chuck Berry’s “No Particular Place to Go” (1958).

Guitarist Darnell sizzles in the switchback turns of “Johnny B. Goode,” another Berry classic.

Saxophonist Brown makes his instrument wail and moan on “Shake, Rattle and Roll” (1954).

Drummer Rossi holds his own at the stage’s perimeter — and captures the aggressive beat of tunes like “Money (That’s What I Want)” (1959) and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” (1957).

Great show. But what makes it a Jerry Lee Lewis show — especially when the lead performer isn’t pretending to be Jerry Lee Lewis?

It’s a question of style and substance. With Jerry Lee Lewis, style was substance. He was no singer-songwriter, but he made the songs his own. Not in the sense of respectful homage. More like the way a shoplifter makes off with a bottle of wine. In the process, Lewis set a good/bad example for the rule (and instrument) breaking musicians who followed in the 1960s. (I imagine The Who still blame him for all the gear they smashed on stage.)

Lewis’ style was never safe.

(The actual human being wasn’t either.) But Cohen perfectly captures the man’s cocky flash and flair.

This review offers a sizzling tribute to the musical side of Lewis’ legacy and doesn’t dig into his various scandals. It’s all about the music. If you want to go behind the music, try VH1. If you want to enjoy the show, come here. And expect no sermons.

Lewis was a damn fine pianist and an incendiary, rock ‘n’ roll showman. Lewis was also a sinner. Unlike his televangelist cousin, he never claimed to be otherwise.

“Nothing is better than getting live reps. That’s why I wanted to play in it. I want to keep playing and keep getting better for next season.”

Lucero finished her freshman season at North Carolina State with 32 and two-thirds innings pitched over 14 appearances (five starts). She held a 2-1 record and a 3.64 ERA. While pitching in the FGCL, Lucero said she will focus on her mechanics, trying to increase her velocity.

She’s also excited by the amount of talent she’s able to face this summer. That includes the Mexico National Team, which is playing exhibition games against FGCL

teams before heading to Tokyo for the Olympics in July. Lucero faced Mexico on June 25, throwing two innings and allowing four runs on five hits in a 7-0 loss.

“It was a good experience,” Lucero said of facing Team Mexico.

“Regardless of how we performed as a team, I think you can find little positives. Not a lot of people can say they faced a team like that.

You can’t think too much, or you will psyche yourself out. You can focus on just making good pitches.

If they hit it, you tip your cap to them. We were the first team (in exhibitions) to not get run-ruled by them, so that’s something.”

FGCL Founder Ryan Moore said that as good as last year’s talent was, this year’s group — now split among 10 teams instead of last year’s seven — is “better by 100 times.”

Moore said the league had to turn away some players from last year who wanted to return to give more players the experience. This year, to keep every team competitive, the league instituted a rule saying each team could have no more than eight players from Power 5 conference teams.

This year, the league is playing all of its games at the Miss Sarasota Softball Complex, and it’s free to attend. Regular season games continue through July 14, with two games planned most evenings, at 5 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m. The schedule is available at FGCLSoftball.com.

The Out-of-Door Academy junior baseball pitcher Josh Cone committed to the University of South Florida on June 25.

Last summer, the Florida Gulf Coast League was formed in the Bradenton-Sarasota area as a summer softball league for college athletes.

Playing at different sites across the two counties, the league helped college players stay ready during the offseason. The league is back, and the level of competition has risen even higher.

Former Lakewood Ranch High softball pitcher Brooklyn Lucero, who just finished her freshman season at North Carolina State, is one of a handful of area alumni playing in the league. She plays for the Bradenton Lynx alongside shortstop Devyn Flaherty, who played for Riverview High in Sarasota.

Local graduates excel at college level A

s successful as area high school athletes have been at the next level in past years, their collegiate success has grown.

East County athletes in college have been more successful than ever in the 2020-2021 school season, racking up plenty of acclaim from their conferences and establishing a few school records.

Lakewood Ranch High track and field alumnus Harry Barthelemy transferred from University of South Alabama to the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley before the 202021 season. While Barthelemy was in the transfer portal, the Vaqueros had offered him a full scholarship. He wasted little time in proving their decision to be a smart one. Barthemely, a sophomore, broke the school record in the triple jump (15.39 meters) and hit the second-best mark in the long jump (7.48 meters). Unfortunately, a hamstring injury affected him in the postseason, and he fouled out of both events in the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

At Boston College, former Out-of-Door Academy boys swimmer Zachary Szmania, a sophomore, set school records in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:20.20) and 1,650-yard freestyle (15:31.41) at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in February.

Lakewood Ranch High alumna Payton Kinney, a freshman softball pitcher at the University of Connecticut, broke onto the collegiate scene in a big way.

Kinney was named the Big East Pitcher of the Week Feb. 26 after throwing 27 innings and allowing just two runs. Kinney would continue her success throughout the 2021 season, leading Big East pitchers by allowing just a .204 batting average against opposing hitters. Kinney finished with a 2.99 ERA and 135 strikeouts. She was named to the 2021 Big East All-Tournament team.

Although the Patriot League did not dole out all-league team honors for swimming in 2021, it did give weekly honors.

Former ODA boys swimmer Sarsen Whatmore, a sophomore at Boston University, received the league’s Swimmer of the Week award after winning the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:38.36), 500-yard freestyle (4:40.43) and 200-yard freestyle (1:44.56) in a dual meet against the University

to both the All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team and Freshman Team after hitting .355 with nine home runs, six triples, nine doubles, 29 RBIs and 23 steals. Clark’s offensive push helped the Tigers go 44-8 and reach the ACC Tournament finals in just their second season of existence.

Another former Mustangs softball player, Logan Newton, earned All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team honors after hitting .344 with seven home runs, one triple, five doubles and 36 RBIs as a junior at James Madison University, helping the Dukes make their first trip to the Women’s College World Series.

Former Lakewood Ranch girls soccer player Gi Krstec was

named to the All-Conference USA First Team as a junior at Florida Atlantic. Krstec, a midfielder, started all 10 regular season games for the Owls, recording a goal and two assists.

After two years of watching from the sidelines, Braden River High football alumnus Taylor Upshaw got his chance to make an impact at the University of Michigan as a junior. The defensive end played in all six of the Wolverines games in the shortened 2020 season, including two starts. Upshaw finished with 17 tackles (three tackles for loss), two sacks and a quarterback hurry.

What’s amazing is that none of these players was a senior, so they are setting records and earning conference honors with years left to improve on their contributions.

It speaks to both their natural talent and the level of coaching they received while growing up.

We’re lucky to have great leaders at youth and high school levels here. It makes the performances of these outstanding athletes all the more fun to watch.

The Sarasota resident would soon move from snack time to a nature hike to a science and math center and then back to the cafeteria for games. One of his favorite games is Four Corners, in which each contestant chooses to stand in one of a room’s four corners while a blindfolded person in the middle of the room calls out a number one to four, eliminating all standing in the corresponding corner.

Bass said he was thankful his “awesome” parents signed him up for East County’s Foundation for Dreams summer camp, for children with disabilities age 7-17, from June 21-25.

Camp counselor Hannah MacDonald said she cherished the opportunities to forge “super special connections” with campers after getting to know them for a week. Luke Pellegrino, who traveled all the way from Kentucky to be a counselor at the camp, also said he loved working with the campers.

Newly inducted President of the Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch Mark Midyett concludes the installation dinner and celebration of the club’s 20th birthday with his inaugural address.

uring one of her last moments as the president of the Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch, Laura Adcock spoke about the club’s 2020-21 year.

The COVID-19 pandemic dealt Adcock a difficult hand. She spoke of not being able to meet in person, the Zoom calls, the cancellation of the organization’s wine festival and other challenges.

She also spoke of a club that had volunteers step up when needed most. Adcock said the organization was no longer able to give away thousands of dollars to organizations that needed help, but it didn’t stop members of the Rotary Club from doing what they could to help.

“What did we do?” Adcock said. “We did our darnedest to help anyone who asked for it.”

The club’s installation dinner June 24 at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club was a recap of the past, a glimpse of the future and a celebration of the club’s 20th birthday.

The club was not able to have an in-person installation dinner last year, and this year’s attendees said they were thrilled.

My major at Flagler is Strategic Communication with minors in Graphic Design, Advertising, and Fine Arts.

I will be graduating May 3, 2021. After graduation I will be moving back to New Jersey and continuing work for Joy Luedtke Real Estate, LLC in Barnegat Light, NJ as their communication specialist and graphic designer. I hope to expand my experience in graphic design and communication and eventually travel and/or relocate globally.

I am a Junior transfer student from Miami, FL. I currently work as a leasing consultant at Campus Circle, a luxury student apartment. I hold the Photographer/Videographer position on the UF Victoria’s Secret PINK Campus Team and work with various companies as a content creator for their social media platforms. I hope to go into the Advertising industry with a concentration in fashion, home, or beauty.
