Emily Walsh, chief digital officer for the Observer Media Group Inc., has been named publisher of the company’s four Sarasotabased newspapers, magazines and website.

Effective immediately, the younger Walsh, 36, will serve as publisher of the East County Observer, Longboat Observer, Sarasota Observer, Siesta Key Observer, Season magazine, LWR Life magazine and YourObserver. com. She will also continue to head up the company’s overall digital strategy and operations.

Emily Walsh, a 15-year employee at the company, is succeeding her mother, Lisa Walsh, as part of a succession plan in the familyowned business. Matt and Lisa Walsh, along with Lisa’s parents, David and Ruth Beliles, started the company 21 years ago when they purchased the Longboat Observer.

Lisa Walsh will continue as vice president of the company, serving as a mentor for her daughter in Sarasota and sharing oversight with Matt Walsh of the company’s 10 newspapers, six websites

and magazines.

“When Emily started with the company 15 years ago, she expected it to be a part-time gig, allowing her to earn enough money to move to New York City,” said Matt Walsh. “But much to our surprise, and hers, Emily fell in love with the business.

“With Lisa and me crossing the 60-age barrier a couple of years ago; with the rapid changes in the media industry; and with Emily’s well-rounded experience and accomplishments, we think Emily has earned the position and that it’s time to start making a transition,” said Matt Walsh.

She currently is serving a twoyear term as chairwoman of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Board of Trustees; serves on the board of Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center; serves on the Ringling College Library Association Board of Directors as Town Hall Chair 2018; and serves as a regional director of the Calusa chapter of Leadership Florida.

Tragedy leads mother down

Sheriff’s Office detectives hunt down leads when investigating homicides and other cases. But some cases go “cold.”

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Randy Warren said a case going “cold” means nothing is happening, but authorities are waiting for new information that can help make a break in the case.

Such cases remain open, even over years. Detectives regularly read through notes and other documenta-

tion, but, at some point, they know the information so well, they simply need new leads to follow. New information can provide the missing link to solve the case.

INFORMATION Anyone with information about the case should call the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office at 747-3011.

There currently is a $10,000 reward through the Gold Star Club being offered for information leading to an arrest.

The garden fills almost all of Stock’s backyard and includes several walking trails and a sitting area.

Friends and family members have placed statues and other decorations in the garden over the years, leaving notes on the bottoms. This one, a stone, is the easiest to still read.

or more than a decade, Rose Stock has made a habit of talking to bricks.

Thousands of bricks and pavers now make up the walking paths meandering through her backyard garden that seems to never end. Stock doesn’t know the exact count, but she does know she laid 20 more just last week.

Each is a reminder of her daughter’s life, one taken prematurely July 6, 2004.

“For every brick I put down ... ‘I love you Jessie,’” Stock whispered while closing her eyes. “That’s what I did.”

Jessica Marie Stock was 25 years old when a construction worker found her body on the south side of State Road 64, just east of Interstate 75, less than a mile from her home on the west side of I-75.

It was a few days after she had left for a weekend Fourth of July trip with friends.

Originally, the Florida Highway Patrol investigated the case as a hit-and-run. Autopsy findings revealed blunt trauma caused by something other than being hit by a vehicle. However, the case was never classified as a homicide.

The case file has grown cold at the Manatee County Sheriff’s office, but Stock remains hopeful her daughter’s mystery will be solved, especially once the Sheriff’s Office pushes out a segment of “Sheriff’s Patrol” that will run during the next week on Manatee Educational Television. The date and time of the show had not been determined as of press time Tuesday.

Once the video is ready, the agency also will promote it on its Facebook page.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dave Bristow said the odds of solving a 12-year-old case aren’t great. As time passes, it becomes harder to make an arrest.

“That doesn’t stop us,” he said.

“You’ve got to have hope. It may be we’re never able to charge anyone, but at the very least, we’d like to be able to tell the family, ‘This is what happened to your daughter.’”

Stock and the Sheriff’s Office hope the video and social media promotion will spur the public to come forward with new information.

“That’s really what we’re praying for,” Stock said. “I need to know where Jessie took her last breath. Who did this to her? And why did they do this to my daughter?

“Twelve years of not knowing.

It’s hard.”

Stock finds solace by digging her hands into the soil.

The first year following the tragedy, her garden was a tiny patch. On the anniversary of Jessie’s death this year, Stock, family members and Jessie’s friends will gather to light a candle and release 12 butterflies. They place statues of frogs in the garden.

“She loved frogs, frog bracelets, frog everything,” Stock said as she managed a smile.

“I was doing it really for myself, for healing, grieving,” Stock said

of gardening. “My mother was a gardener, and I remember how she had a beautiful garden.”

Every year since Jessica’s death, the garden expanded, until it now fills virtually every bit of Stock’s spacious backyard. Benches, statues of angels, frogs and other decor line pathways of mulch and stepping stones or brick pavers.

Friends have continued to bring items to decorate the garden and Stock has added many items on her own, including a cemetery bench and specially made signs bearing Jessie’s name.

Every year, friends and family gather to remember Jessie and walk Stock’s garden of love. Stock hands out bookmarks decorated with Jessie’s picture.

Stock recalled how the Sheriff’s Office would update her and her late-husband, Russell, at least every two weeks for years. There were times when answers seemed so close she could touch them.

And then, they would vanish.

“It seemed like they were getting close, and then big disappointments,” Stock said. “A lot of disappointments.”

Detectives continued to provide updates, but they lessened to once a month and then fewer over the years.

Stock knows detectives have worked the case tirelessly, but she doesn’t let them forget about Jessie. She aches for her daughter every day.

She hates the word “closure.”

She wants peace, and realizes that the upcoming promotions may produce less of it. But, it’s worth the risk.

On July 6, she plans to gather with friends and family, as is her tradition.

“I’m thankful for the 25 years I had her,” Stock said. “She was not perfect, but she was a blessing in my life. Everything reminds me of her.”

The 2014 Lakewood Ranch High School graduate was checking off a list last week as she packed for the Miss Florida beauty pageant, which began June 26 and runs through July 2, when the winner is crowned at the Lakeland Center.

“I have to bring everything I might need,” said the 19-yearold University of Florida student, who’s not allowed to use her phone outside her hotel room at the pageant.

Hyatt learned the benefit of making a list — and actually checking it twice — when she entered the Miss Central Florida pageant in Pasco County in April.

As she was preparing for the contest, she realized she had left a crucial part of her outfits, her shoes, at home.

In a twist of fate, her phone also stopped working the same weekend. Left with no way to get in contact with her mom, she sent out word to her fellow contestants.

She said generosity to a competitor is a common thread in the beauty pageant world. Her com-

“We’re all friends,” Hyatt said.

“You’re never upset if you don’t win because you know how hard the girl who won worked to get there.”

Pam Hyatt knew her daughter had found her passion when she was 7 years old.

The Hyatt family has supported and participated in the Manatee County Fair, and when her daughter was 7, Pam entered her in the Miss Manatee County Fair beauty pageant.

Before she got on stage, Pam remembered seeing her daughter on the sidelines, jumping up and down from excitement.

“She was hooked,” Pam said.

“She’s never been shy. I knew she had what it took.”

Pam Hyatt said she never tried to make fashion or style tips, but she acts as the photographer during the contests and gives her daughter tips on the talent portion of her performance.

Twelve years later, competing in beauty pageants is Samantha Hyatt’s preferred lifestyle. This year, she climbed the ranks to have a shot at the Miss Florida title.

“I fell in love with it and what it stands for,” she said.

As a pageant contestant, she has been trained to stop the stereotype before it can start. Before someone can make an assumption about her, she tells them about her Girl Scouts service project and the work she’s doing in her community.

success, scholarship and service.

Those are the four areas in which the winner should be able to show her prowess.

Pageants start at the local level, often at county fairs. Winners progress to a regional level and, in Hyatt’s case, she won the Miss Central Florida title in April.

Although Hyatt is a native of east Bradenton, she’s now studying public relations at the University of Florida, so she was eligible for the Central Florida title.

A major part of being a contestant is having a service platform and the work to show for it.

Hyatt, a Girl Scout for 13 years and now a lifetime member, has been working to keep girls enrolled in the youth program through their high school years and encouraging them to work hard for their goals and dreams, despite obstacles. She speaks at troop meet-

ings and community events and does appearances as Miss Central Florida.

During pageants, only one part of the contest makes Hyatt nervous ... the on-stage question.

Before the contestants appear in front of the audience, they have a 10-minute interview with the judges, who will ask them about their platform and quiz them on current events.

Then, before showing off their talents, bikinis and evening gowns, the girls are asked one question before the audience and have 20 seconds to answer. The question can be about anything.

One year, Hyatt remembers, a girl was asked what she thought about affirmative action.

“Some people don’t think girls in pageants are the brightest,” she said. “The ones I’ve met are the smartest I’ve ever met.”

As the 37 people who attended Sunday evening’s meeting to oppose the planned Manatee Lost Lagoon water park began leaving Tom Bennett Park, Bob Walsh summed up the proceedings.

“It’s a start,” said Walsh, a River Strand resident. “This project shouldn’t go unchecked.

“It’s a bad place to squeeze something like this.”

River Strand resident Tim Petz organized the meeting because he wanted to start a push to let county commissioners know, “This isn’t right and we don’t want it.”

On June 1, the county closed a second round of soliciting project proposals for a water park project at Tom Bennett Park. Manatee Lost Lagoon, which was selected after the first round of project proposals April 24, 2015 but wanted to amend its original plan to include a hotel, was the only proposer.

Manatee Lost Lagoon hopes upcoming negotiations with the county go quickly so it can begin the county’s approval process and eventually open the park by spring 2018.

Petz told those who assembled at the Bennett Park pavilion on Sunday that they have time to stop the project, which is planned for 20 acres.

After going over the history of Tom Bennett Park, Petz talked to concerned local residents about what they could do to stop the water park project.

“Mobilize,” Petz said. “We have to go on a letter writing campaign.”

He told them to target Manatee County commissioners and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. He also suggested raising capital to hire a lawyer to represent the group.

Petz and others who attended the meeting cited several reasons to oppose the park. Included was sprawl that leads to worse traffic conditions, less open land and less-desirable living conditions.

too small to house such a project.

Petz suggested the project would fail and Manatee County would be forced to take it over. He said Manatee County has far better options to place such a project.

Jacob Miklojcik, a River Strand resident who attended the meeting, said he didn’t want to lose park space. “I like this area because of the public parks,” he said. “I’ve looked around the country, and I like the way Manatee County protects its public access to beaches and the water.

“And I don’t see how this project remotely could work.”

River Strand resident Paul Peyser said he would join the effort to stop the water park. “I really sought out property east of Interstate-75 because I didn’t want to be swept into the congestion.

There’s a value on open space.”

Peyser said he didn’t like the idea that park land set aside for the community was going to be given away to “satisfy private interest.”

Manatee Lost Lagoon’s original application proposed constructing a 20,000-square-foot wave pool with a simulated beach and surfing equipment, a multilevel children’s play area, a toddler play pool, a 2,667-foot-long lazy river and a variety of water slides, among other offerings. The new proposal places a 120-room hotel on what was a parking area.

The Central Economic Development Center pitched the idea for an aquatic park to the Manatee County Commission in September 2014. Original cost estimates for the park were between $20 million and $30 million before the hotel plan was added. Bid documents become public July 1.

“The first thing we are going to do, is to let people know we are going to fight this,” Petz said.

If cost isn’t prohibitive, supervisors of Lakewood Ranch’s community development districts would like to transform the Summerfield Information Center into a community center.

However, money could be an obstacle, so several different uses, including a community center, were being considered June 27 during a meeting of the supervisors.

Among the different uses discussed was converting the building into a library.

“Great communities don’t come by luck,” CDD Supervisor Mike Finney said. “They come by people doing things to enhance them.”

An ad hoc committee of supervisors from CDDs 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 have been meeting for more than a year to discuss what might become of the Summerfield Information Center, Lakewood Ranch’s original Town Hall and most recently a sales center for Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch.

The sales center vacated the property to open a new office farther north, and Lakewood Ranch Community Activities Corp., which was housed there, will move out of the building by the

CDD supervisors have raised concerns about the cost of purchasing and maintaining the information center, at 6310 Lakewood Ranch Blvd.

Representatives of three of five districts believe their boards will not support spending money on the community center, but they agreed to have Lakewood Ranch Town Hall Executive Director Anne Ross talk to SchroederManatee Ranch officials about potential costs to purchase the building.

The building is valued at more than $460,000 by the Manatee County Property Appraiser. The supervisors would like SMR to donate the building or to come up with a purchase price so they can present the information to their boards. As proposed, all five districts would share in the purchase, renovation and maintenance of the property.

Estimates show annual resident assessments would increase about $24.60 per household, if the building was purchased at $400,000.

Hooray for the Brits!

The U.K.’s vote to exit the EU comes at a propitious time. As we celebrate the 240th anniversary of our independence, Brexit reminds us of the meaning of liberty.

ome readers, and some of my colleagues, tell me: Don’t comment on national and international issues. We’re local, they say.

They also say, “You make our advertisers mad.”

Yeah, OK. But every year, when Independence Day approaches, the patriotic urge is too great. Stories about our nation’s founding are important. Sometimes we reprint the Declaration of Independence. Everyone should read it … every year. We also publish our annual special section, “Spirit of America.”

All of this is with the intention of reminding ourselves of who we are, how we came to be and of our nation’s founding principles. And all of this needs to be repeated — again and again. It’s essential to the preservation and flourishing of our heritage, culture and liberty.

This year, the Independence Day story is in real time. And just as it did in 1776, this year’s story involves Great Britain and the United States.

They are central characters in an overarching drama, except that this year, they are separate players with separate, albeit similar, circumstances.

You might say the events of each nation may turn out to be what popular author Malcolm Gladwell would call the “tipping point” — that moment when an idea, trend or social behavior crosses a threshold and dramatically changes the trajectory of events. Or, as historian-author Jon Meacham said in a speech last weekend at the Leadership Florida annual meeting at Walt Disney Resort: When Thomas Jefferson sat in his revolving Windsor chair in 1776 in the upstairs parlor in Philadelphia to write the Declaration of Independence, “he was creating the embodiment of huge cultural trends.”

Jefferson penned in that room not only the summary of preceding decades of events and relations with the Motherland and its King, but he crystallized what became the fundamental premise of American life, then and thereafter: We have the right to create our own destiny.

That is Brexit. And, to a degree, that is Trump, or perhaps more precisely, the Trump movement.

Brits and Americans are reaffirming they want back the right to create — and control — their own destiny.

Indeed, how wonderful it would be if, on the 240th anniversary of the Colonists proclaiming their independence and every man’s inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, every American would step back and soak in the profound statement British voters sent June 23 to exit the European Union.

Fraser Nelson, editor of Spectator, clearly illustrated in the Wall Street Journal the impetus behind the Brexit vote through the words of Michael Gove, Britain’s justice secretary.

Gove said he constantly dealt with edicts and regulations framed by the bureaucrats in the European Union in Brussels. Gove said these were rules

“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

“We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government,

and regulations “that he doesn’t want and can’t change. These were rules that no one in Britain asked for, rules promulgated by officials whose names Brits don’t know, people whom they never elected and cannot remove from office. Yet they become the law of the land.”

Oh, what a familiar tune.

Here in the United States, of course, under the auspices of a despot-like president and the entrenched, selfserving Congress, the unelected, unaccountable rule makers go by acronyms of EPA, IRS, SEC, OSHA and the Departments of Labor, Justice, Health and Human Services, Education and on and on. They are our Brussels, making rules and laws that constrict your freedoms, as if you’re being body-wrapped in a rope.

And increasingly, America’s producers and silent middle class — those whose wealth is confiscated to fund our own Brussels — are feeling helpless and angry, unable to stop these runaway government takers from burrowing ever deeper into our lives.

These conditions in the U.K. and here at home have parallels with what Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence wrote of the British king’s “history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.”

Mind you, neither Brussels nor our own federal government has risen to the ultimate obscene levels of King George during the 1700s. As of now, neither EU President Jean-Claude Juncker nor President Obama has gone so far as to send “swarms of Officers to … eat out their substance,” as Jefferson described. Nor have they sent into Britain or the U.S. “large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages …”

But if you read down the list of Jefferson’s 27 egregious charges against the king, many of them resemble actions that have been executed against citizens in the U.K. and U.S. over the past decade and longer.

laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government.”

the IRS snatched — unannounced — $107,000 from his bank account because his niece made cash deposits that exceeded federal limits? You could fill a book of “usurpations.”

Millions of Americans and Brits are today’s Howard Beales — mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.

On top of the usurpations, in both countries, out-of-control and lawless immigration is provoking equal anger and frustration.

The EU’s immigration laws became such an illogical, open-border system that it wiped out any hope of immigrants assimilating and accepting the culture, mores and values of their new homes. It was as if a foreign guest moved into your home and brazenly rejected your family’s habits, customs and traditions. Brexiteers said: Enough. We are Brits; we want to remain Brits; we want control of our borders and our country.

Americans have similar sentiments. As a nation of immigrants, we welcome them. But the message of the “Trumpians” is: Immigrants can pursue life, liberty and happiness as long as they do it by the law. Get in the legal line.

So when the British sent the second shot heard round the world June 23 to leave the EU, they affirmed and shouted a familiar call. The same call that millions of Americans have been shouting ever since the Tea Party movement spread like a western brush fire in 2009 and beyond.

In both nations, voters are shouting laissez faire — “leave us alone.”

They are rejecting the political class smothering their lives with despotic rules, and they want restored their self-determining sovereignty, their liberty and the preservation of their nationhood, heritage and cultures.

In the high-rise offices of the global elites, they see Brexit and the rise of Donald Trump as hedgehog-like movements of isolationist nativism.

But talk to regular people, and they will tell you Brexit and Trump are the embodiment, continuation and reassertion of what Jefferson proclaimed: That we — not the EU, not Obama, not the IRS — have the right to create our own destiny. We are endowed with the rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

Smoking issues light fire under LECOM pharmacist

“Tobacco affects any disease we discuss with them.”

On this particular day, the patient was Teresa Deems, who was battling illness along with her efforts to find a home.

Compounding the problem was a severe smoking habit.

“I went from two packs to about 15 a month,” Deems said.

“Not smoking helps me both physically and mentally.

“The people here are honest and strong. I am blessed to be able to come here.”

However, their gentle approach has paid dividends.

“This is my fourth week here and I’ve worked with 20 smokers,” said LECOM student Christian Skala. “The patients I see do seem happier they are quitting.

We’ve had one or two fully quit after two weeks ... that’s amazing. Others smoke three packs a day and they are down to a few cigarettes. I never thought it would make this much of a difference.”

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County recognized the work of Vazquez and his students and last week presented the One Stop Center with a $9,930 grant through Turning Points to provide a year’s worth of nicotine replacement products.

Vazquez is fighting the good fight, one that can be frustrating at times.

“You can still walk into a pharmacy and buy cigarettes,” he said as he turned to visit another patient.

Turning Points operates the One Stop Center, located at 701 17th Ave. W., for Manatee County residents who don’t have health insurance. Many of those patients are smokers who would like to quit, but they don’t have the money to buy nicotine replacement products, or the emotional support needed.

That’s where Vazquez and his LECOM pharmacy students rise to the challenge. As they treat the One Stop Center’s patients who smoke for various medical problems, they start the conversation about quitting.

“We do chronic disease management here,” Vazquez said during a shift at the One Stop

Many of the patients are fragile, so the thought of dealing with an illness, money woes and kicking a smoking habit all at the same time can seem overwhelming.

Vazquez and his students keep that in mind as they work with the patients, going the opposite direction of recent television and radio scare advertisements that show smokers breathing out of holes in their throats and navigating their homes with missing limbs.

“I don’t think the evidence supports its use,” Vazquez said of the scare tactics. “Probably the most frustrating thing about tobacco cessation is that it requires patience. If they aren’t ready to quit, they aren’t going to quit. A number of our patients will pick up a butt they find on the floor and smoke it.”

I applaud the efforts of Vazquez, because I have experienced how emotional the topic of smoking can be. My first week as editor of a newspaper in Crawfordsville, Ind., I wrote a column about the city’s efforts to ban smoking in public buildings. My car was egged the day the article appeared.

Vazquez and his students aren’t telling patients they shouldn’t smoke in a public building. They are telling them not to smoke at all.

he story came from a friend, who remembered back to his childhood days when his father found a pack of cigarettes in his bedroom.

My friend was 13 at the time, and his dad never said a word about the cigarettes until they were at the dinner table later that night.

“You like smoking so much, you might as well enjoy a pack right here,” his father said, handing the youngster the cigarettes and matches. He then made his son smoke every cigarette in the pack, in front of the entire family.

Barfing ensued, but my friend never smoked again.

I’m sure a lot of smokers wish it was just that simple.

East County resident Dr. Alex Vazquez knows it isn’t easy, and because of it, he dedicates a large slice of his life to helping smokers quit.

Vazquez is a teaching pharmacist for the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Lakewood Ranch. As part of the education process, he spends more than 20 hours a week at the Bill Galvano One Stop Center in Bradenton. While his duties are primarily as a teaching clinical pharmacist, he has branched off to help the center’s patients quit smoking.

It has been 11 years of community meetings and conversations, 11 years of meeting with Sarasota County staff and 11 years of patience.

After a vote at the June 21 Sarasota County Commission meeting, communities north of Fruitville Road are getting what they desired in terms of street lights and sidewalks.

Sarasota County commissioners approved a $990,681 contract with Frederick Derr and Co. to complete sidewalks and install LED street lights the entire length of both 17th Street and Richardson Road in the communities. The project will start in July.

Sarasota resident John Krotec helped bring his friends and neighbors together into a group called the Fruitville 210 Community Alliance, uniting smaller residential communities along the Fruitville 210 Exit of Interstate 75, to give them all a stronger voice.

“There is strength in numbers. One neighborhood with 20 homes isn’t as strong as 10 neighborhoods with 20 homes,” said Krotec, the first chairman of the group.

neighborhood, between Richardson Road and 17th Street. By banning together, attending meetings and staying informed, Fruitville 210 was able to stop that effort.

Following that victory, the group asked the county to make improvements to Richardson Road and 17th Street. The twolane roads with no bike lanes weren’t built for high volume traffic. Both streets have gained traffic as the 210 exit area has developed.

The county agreed to do it, but couldn’t accomplish the project before the recession in 2007.

Sidewalks and street lights had to

take a step back with the county budget.

Gary Heffner, Fruitville 210’s current chairman, said the group started meeting again with the county in 2012 to get the sidewalks constructed.

“If you ban together and do it civilly, you can make it happen,” Krotec said. “The stance we took wasn’t one of defiance, it was one of collaboration.”

Krotec and Heffner, along with other members of the group, worked with the Neighborhood Services department to communicate their needs for the community. They also enrolled in the

county’s Civics 101 class, which educates residents about their local government operations and its processes.

“It’s encouraging for the neighbors to see, if you keep at it, you can get things funded by the county and make the neighborhoods nicer,” Heffner said.

Getting the road improvements won’t dissolve Fruitville 210. Krotec said the group plans to stay involved in issues affecting its area and keep an open mind.

“We all have a seat at the table,” he said.

New striping on the tennis courts at GreyHawk Landing has more people talking about communication than about the new option to play pickle ball.

A handful of residents were angered that GreyHawk Landing Community Development District supervisors decided to spend almost $1,000 to convert one of two tennis courts into a dual pickle ball/tennis court without placing the item on the agenda.

Resident Lucas Levine, a tennis player, said he was upset because the residents weren’t alerted of the possible change.

Levine and Shelley Roberts, whose 10-year-old daughter, Hayley, plays competitive tennis, asked the board to do more to communicate with residents about such decisions.

“I felt taken by surprise,” Roberts said of the court conversion. “It’s a constant frustration for residents. It would be nice to figure out a way to communicate better.”

CDD Supervisor Michael Plaia said if any issue is discussed as a non-agenda item, the board will open the discussion to the public.

“This was discussed over three meetings. It probably should have been put on a formal agenda,” said Plaia. “I don’t think it would have changed anything.

“If they are concerned about what’s going on at the meetings, they should attend.”

She told him he owed the IRS money from his 2013-2014 tax return and that a warrant for his arrest had been issued, but he could pay her a $5,000 fine to avoid the arrest. She informed him that he had to do it now, though, because her office was closing soon. She kept him on his cell as he went to the bank to get money, and told him not to tell anyone else about the issue or else he would get arrested. The man went to a department store to wire the money to a man’s name, which the woman told him was the IRS agent who could cancel the warrant when he received the money. The woman also told him to purchase an iPhone gift card as another means to pay his debt. The man, however, then contacted the Sheriff’s Office, which was able to stop the incident before any money was transferred.

I

t was three years ago that Bella Valentin bounced between rooms of her Parrish home, showing off her karate moves.

That was strange to her mom, Johanna Valentin, who knew her 3-year-old daughter never had taken any lessons.

Too much television?

Actually, Bella picked up the moves during her time at the Goddard School, her preschool in Lakewood Ranch.

Johanna made a quick call to the Goddard School and discovered her daughter was learning martial arts from Chris Jaramillo, the head instructor for Ming Wu Martial Arts in Lakewood Ranch.

Jaramillo had periodically visited the Goddard School to teach some basic karate skills.

At her daughter’s urging, Johanna decided to sign her up at Ming Wu Martial Arts. On their first trip to the martial arts studio, Johanna watched as Bella raced through the door to give Jaramillo a hug.

Bella, now heading into second grade at Freedom Elementary, hasn’t stopped smiling since.

“Her shyness is completely gone,” Johanna Valentin said.

“She was so shy and quiet and now she has amazing discipline, politeness and attention.”

The Ming Wu Martial Arts’ blue mat has become Bella’s second classroom.

“It’s taught me how to be strong,” Bella said. “I’ve done a lot of work with it.”

Bella now works with her two training partners, Kiki Bullas, a

6-year-old McNeal Elementary student, and Shanthi Marmash, a 7-year-old Center Montessori student, to learn discipline, respect and overall strength.

In May, Bella, Kiki and Shanthi earned their black belts. They are the youngest students — male or female — to do so at Ming Wu, according to Jaramillo.

During the process, the girls were tested on 16 basic forms associated with the previous eight belt colors, as well as two advanced forms. In addition, the girls had to show their mastery of falling and kicking techniques.

“These are my angels,” Sigung (master) Jessie Vi said. “They’ve done amazing and will only keep climbing up. It’s very rewarding to see.”

The three girls received their coveted black belts during a ceremony May 21.

“It’s really special because I worked hard for it,” said Shanthi, who will be in second grade at the Center for Montessori School.

The girls now have nine belts in their collection, but this particular belt means so much more.

“It’s special to me because it has my name on it,” Kiki said. “The other belts are just the colors.”

Since joining Ming Wu Martial Arts, Bella, Kiki and Shanthi have proven that girls are capable of thriving in a sport once deemed more of a boy’s activity.

“There’s no such thing as a boy or girl sport,” Shanthi said.

If anyone tells them otherwise, the girls know just what to say.

“We have our black belts,” Kiki said. “We can take you down.”

Ranch grad pools resources to realize dream

I

t’s no longer just a dream for 2016 Lakewood Ranch High graduate Danny Erlenmeyer, who is waking up these days at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at the Century Link Center in Omaha, Neb. Since qualifying for the trials during the Junior National Championships in 2015, Erlenmeyer, who also is a Sarasota Sharks swimmer, has kept the same approach to swimming that earned him a spot on the North Carolina State University team in the fall.

He has remained confident in his abilities, relying on the belief he deserves to compete alongside the top names in USA Swimming.

Although he finished 52nd out of 107 swimmers in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3 minutes, 58.83 seconds on June 26, he is excited about the opportunities still ahead of him, including the 1,500 freestyle at the trials July 2.

“It’s just been a dream (to swim in the Olympic Trials) ever since I was a kid,” said Erlenmeyer, who won a state title in the 500-yard freestyle as a junior at Lakewood Ranch. “I can’t really describe it. You never think you’re going to get to this level, and then you finally get there.”

Erlenmeyer was one of nine current and former Sharks swimmers to compete in this year’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Florida District 26 Little League crowned its first set of champions during the Little League All-Star Tournament June 24, at G.T. Bray Park.

Lakewood Ranch Little League captured the 10/11 division, defeating Buffalo Creek 15-1. The team went 3-0 in the tournament, outscoring its opponents 45-16.

Danielle Valley, a 2013 graduate of Lakewood Ranch and ninetime YMCA national champion, two-time USA Swimming Junior national champion and high school state champion in the 500-yard freestyle, made her second U.S. Olympic Team Trials appearance.

In 2012, Valley advanced to the finals of the women’s 800 free-

style. This year, Valley competed in the 400 freestyle June 27 and finished 41st out of 101 swimmers with a time of 4:16.52. She will compete in the 800 freestyle July 1.

“We develop champions,” Erlenmeyer said of the Sharks.

“It says it on the back of our shirts, and that’s what we are about.”

David Koepfinger wants to help children from the seat of his bike.

The East County resident and BJ’s Wholesale Club employee is in the process of finishing the Great Cycle Challenge USA, a month-long cycling fundraiser benefiting Children’s Cancer Research Fund.

During the month of June, the 60-year-old Koepfinger set out to ride 1,000 miles while raising $2,000 for the cause.

As of June 26, Koepfinger had ridden 760 miles, nearly 102 of which came during a challenge ride June 25. It was the first time Koepfinger had ridden 100 miles in a single ride, having previously maxed out at 85 miles.

Koepfinger logged his miles riding roughly 12 miles back and forth between his home and his job located in the Shoppes at University Center. Additionally, he also went on longer rides around Lakewood Ranch, Parrish, Siesta Key, Anna Maria Island and Myakka City, among other spots.

This is the second-consecutive year Koepfinger has participated in the fundraiser, which was scheduled to end June 30, but has since been extended through July due to inclement weather across the country.

Last year, Koepfinger, who was relatively new to distance riding, rode 650 miles and raised $1,500.

“Whenever I felt like I couldn’t keep riding, I would start to think about the children,” Koepfinger said.

Koepfinger participated in the Great Cycle Challenge USA for the first time last year as a way to challenge himself.

“I started to see where I could be a voice,” Koepfinger said.

“That became the drive. They are children with a small voice, and it’s our obligation to make it larger.”

Cedarkirk Camp, the summer camp of the Presbyteries of Tampa Bay located at the Alafia River, traveled to Peace Presbyterian on State Road 64 to provide entertainment for the children.

Nine-year-old Nicholas Nesser was just one of 565 children who used a little imagination to take the Bayside Community Church’s “Big Trail” June 21 through June 24 at Bayside’s east Bradenton campus.

The vacation Bible school four-day camp, which was run by 225 volunteers, provided children with Western-themed entertainment such as mechanical bull riding and panning for nuggets.
