Tara to the top A Tara Elementary School third-grade class, including Tien Thai, above, won an international competition through IXL Learning, an online, supplementary program that lets students quiz themselves on topics, including math and language arts. Third-grade teacher Charles Rogalla and his students won the Spring Learning Showdown in April, over 3,900 competing classrooms. They received $250, which will be used for a pizza party.

Carpenter set up a legacy fund through the Manatee Education Foundation to present a scholarship every year in Batista’s honor.
