A happy 86th for Dick Vitale With ESPN extending his contract through the 2027-28 season, Naismith basketball Hall of Fame member Dick Vitale made a more ambitious statement. “I want to be the first guy to (announce) a game when I’m 100 years old,” Lakewood Ranch’s Vitale told ESPN. “That’s not that far off. I’m going to be there.” Vitale (above) received the extension June 9, which happened to be his 86th birthday. “Dick is the heart of college basketball, and his kindness, generosity and courage are a constant inspiration to us all,” ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in the announcement. ESPN also said it is starting the Dick Vitale Invitational. The inaugural event will be played Nov. 4 as Texas meets Duke in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dream day for Pete and Cleet
RealRail President Allen Novak and club member Doug Neumann work on the O Scale model train layout that will be available during the club’s special Father’s Day weekend event June 14-15. The club will have both O and HO layouts operating.
Cleetus McFarland, YouTube sensation and owner of the Freedom Factory race track, made a wish come true May 20. Pete Hale, a 13-year-old diagnosed with leukemia, traveled from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to Manatee County to meet McFarland (above). Make-A-Wish Southern Florida facilitated the dream day. McFarland made Hale a custom T-shirt that read, “Pete & Cleet” and gave him a tour of his garage, which includes a helicopter. McFarland and Hale played video games together, and Hale got to ride shotgun in McFarland’s Ford Mustang as he did donuts around the blacktop.
