Butterfly bonanza East County residents Dale and Lisa Nauman created a safe space for monarch butterflies. They built an enclosure in their yard and planted milkweeds, the monarch’s favorite food and egg-laying plant. Already the Naumans have seen caterpillars and chysalises emerging.

Owls on watch At the Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch lunch meeting May 12, an owl made out of a pineapple kept watch on the dessert table. Tara Golf and Country Club cook Sandra Gillespie looked online for inspiration and created the owl in 10 minutes. “Every event, I do a swan out of honeydew or roses or something,” she said. “I always do something, if I have time.”
