to end his Manatee County school days When Superintendent Rick Mills retires July 31, he believes he will have left behind a more financially and academically sound district.

n Military career:

Mills spent 24 years in the U.S. Army. Taught at West Point. Stations included Fort Knox; Jerusalem with the U.N.; and U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. n Education career: Spent 10 years in executive positions with Chicago Public Schools, including two years overseeing 26 high schools; CEO of Minneapolis Public Schools from July 2011 to March 2013; Manatee County School District superintendent from March 2013 to July 2015

During the 2015 VEX Robotics World Championships, held April 14 through April 18 in Louisville, Ky., East County students showcased their love of robots while taking home top honors. A five-student team from Nolan Middle School, dubbed the “Vexperts,” took home first place for the Promo Video Challenge, earning them a $750 prize to be used toward new robotic equipment. Students on the team include Ahamd Ibsais, Suchir Patiel, Angelo LaFrese, Luka Torralva and Try Osportne. Haile Middle School teacher Maureen Hudson’s four teams from Manatee County also performed well. Team 8899Y, consisting of students Devon Summerville, Katie Hartley, Griffin Hudson, Jake Whiddon, Michael Kisida and Grant Trautweiler, won the VEX IQ Excellence Award and also placed second for best booth design. They also placed sixth in the robot tournament.

EAST COUNTY — Just more than two years after assuming the helm of the Manatee County School District, Superintendent Rick Mills announced Monday he will retire from his post this summer. Although his contract ends June 30, 2017, Mill’s resignation will go into effect July 31. He plans to discuss his decision at the May 12 School Board meeting, but he told the East County Observer his leadership is being thwarted by individual motives, divided loyalties and “continued chaos … that’s inconsistent with moving forward.” “I feel very good that in the last two years we turned the district around financially and academically,” Mills said. “But it’s time for me to think about what I want to do beyond the Manatee County School District. I can’t be suc-
