New goals in sight

River Club’s Dave Robinson said goodbye April 9 to a soccer program he founded and developed over the past 15 years.

In 2007, Robinson founded a branch of TOPSoccer, a program focused on children with special needs that features “buddies” who play alongside each athlete. Robinson has since become chairperson of the nationwide TOPSoccer organization.

“It’s been life changing,” Robinson said. “I’ve met so many awesome kids. I’ve enjoyed seeing the same kids over time and meeting new kids as well.

I hope that after I move, the great progress I have seen here continues.”

Robinson is headed to Denver, Colorado, for a new job.

Gabriel Galindo, who is 14 and has been with the program since 2016, said working with Robinson has been a great experience.

“Coach Dave taught us well,” Galindo said. “I was kind of nervous when we first started, but since then, I have been making goals and winning for the team.”

Sun shines on Manatee milestone Florida Power & Light passes 1 million solar panels in Manatee County.

“At the turn of the millennium, we started converting old, inefficient natural gas, oil and coal plants, for example, into ultra-efficient natural gas plants,” Eble said, noting that last year, FPL demolished its last coal plant in the state.

At the Manatee Solar Energy Center in Parrish, solar panels stretch into the distance across 751 acres of land, coexisting with wildlife including deer, coyotes and wild boars.

Inverters convert the direct current (DC) produced by the solar panels to an alternating current (AC) that can be used by the power grid. The energy is then transferred to a substation, from which it is sent through another inverter and converted back to DC for storage in the battery units. From there, it can be converted back to AC for distribution to the community.

“It goes to the grid, and then wherever those electrons will take it,” Kubal said. “It goes to homes, businesses and all other places connected to the power grid.”

Kubal said the panels themselves are not the only technological advancements, but recently there also have been improvements in how the panels are used and serviced. He said larger inverters capable of handling more output are becoming more common, and servicing panels is made simpler by the ability to fly over the site with a drone and taking a thermal reading.

“It’s using new technology,” he said. “They can give me the drone map, I can get my iPad, and it’s going to tell me exactly where I have to go.”

Kubal said his responsibilities are changing as the company continues to evolve, and he’s now site manager for a unique feature of the solar center that began serving the community in January: the world’s largest solar-powered battery at the Manatee Energy Storage Center.

n engineer and site manager for Florida Power & Light, Kamil Kubal has seen a change in the landscape over the 15 years he has worked for the company: namely, the 751 acres of solar panels that stretch across fields beside the natural gas plant at Manatee County Solar Energy Center in Parrish.

Four FPL solar centers in Manatee County together comprise 1 million panels, a milestone for which the company was honored at a March 8 meeting of the Manatee County Commission.

Serving 11 million Floridians, FPL is the state’s primary power utility, and its other solar additions to Manatee County include Southfork Solar Energy Center (Parrish) in 2020, Willow Solar Energy Center (Myakka City) in 2021 and Elder Branch Solar Energy Center (Parrish) in 2022. The county is one of five in Florida to reach 1 million panels with FPL, coming in second place behind DeSoto County.

“We found that our coal plants were inefficient and more expensive to operate,” said FPL spokesperson Jack Eble. “By replacing that with highly efficient natural gas and solar energy, we’ve been able to keep costs down for customers.”

The four centers combined are capable of generating 298 megawatts of energy, enough to power 60,000 homes and the equivalent of 56,000 fewer cars on the road in reduced carbon emissions. Eble said these installations have been part of a larger goal of reaching 30 million solar panels by 2030.

Despite recent movements toward solar energy, Eble said FPL’s investigation of solar stretches back to the 1980s. The first full solar site was built in DeSoto in 2009 and had only

LET THERE BE LIGHT Florida Power & Light serves more than 11 million residents across Florida and is the largest energy company in the United States in terms of the amount of electricity produced and sold. Its role is generating energy and distributing and selling it to customers.

The company is pursuing alternative fuel options and operates dozens of solar energy centers throughout Florida in locations stretching from Miami to Pensacola, as well as additional smaller installations.

According to spokesperson Jack Eble, the company’s fuel mix is comprised of approximately 67% natural gas, 20% nuclear, 6% purchased power, 4% solar, slightly less than 3% coal generated outside Florida and 0.001% oil.

In addition to operating a solar-powered battery in Manatee County, FPL has also created other battery storage projects, including a 10-megawatt battery at the Babcock Ranch Solar Energy Center in Charlotte County and a 4-megawatt battery at the Citrus Solar Energy Center in DeSoto County.

The company advertises that its solar projects create 200 to 250 temporary jobs, and it acquires its materials as locally as possible and performs much of its hiring locally.

FPL is involved in a partnership with Audubon Florida it calls its Solar Stewardship Program. The aim of the program is to restore wetland and upland habitats through the planting of vegetation and the addition of features to make areas more attractive and accessible to animals, such as wildlife-friendly fencing and nest boxes for birds. The majority of its solar energy centers are also Solar Stewardship sites.

iPhone batteries and is capable of supplying 409 megawatts, enough energy to power 329,000 homes for two hours.

“One of the benefits of having that battery system is our customers can enjoy the benefits of solar energy at night, when the sun’s not shining, or during inclement weather, we’re able to still deploy solar energy onto the

grid,” he said.

He said the company is looking into further methods of cleaner energy production. A pilot project in development at the Okeechobee Clean Energy Center involves a natural gas plant in which the electrolyzer — the tool that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen — will be powered by the Cavendish Solar Energy Center.

W

hen Rita Carney moved into her Lakewood Ranch home in 2003, she knew the community would grow.

She didn’t expect the effects of that growth to pass through the walls of her home.

Like multiple residents on the roads in Greenbrook that border State Road 70, Carney, who lives on Glossy Ibis Place, said she has a constant companion in the form of traffic noise.

“It lasts all night long,” Carney said. “It’s quiet for an hour, and then it starts back up. About 10 years ago, the sound started going up and up and up, and it just shows no sign of getting any better.”

Currently, only a portion of west Greenbrook is covered by a high berm and wall.

Carney said that while she wishes she could move, medical expenses and the economy make it impossible, so she has resigned herself to the noises that rush around her.

“I feel like I am on the road, and cars are just zooming past me all the time,” she said. “I don’t know if it’s an echo. I don’t know what it is. …

Sometimes I can identify a song from a car passing by.”

At a Jan. 19 workshop meeting of Community Development District 4 (CDD4), which manages the Greenbrook area, Jenifer Dodson, chair of the Crossings Neighborhood Committee, and Joe O’Neill, a former chair, spoke out about the issue.

Dodson, who lives on Nighthawk Terrace, said the issues began about three years ago.

“With all the new developments in Lakewood Ranch out east, there’s a lot more traffic,” Dodson said. “On top of it, there is nonstop, day and night, construction trucks going up and down the road, and they’re very, very loud.”

O’Neill said there appears to be an influx of traffic into the area from I-75, and many people are using Greenbrook Boulevard, Lorraine Road and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard to travel north. He also said he noticed more tractor-trailers traveling along State Road 70, which serves as a connection to Myakka City.

As a result of residents addressing CDD4 with their concerns, the board resolved to look into the problem.

“When our neighbors came to us with this problem, I think we were unanimous that we were going to try to do something about it, within reason,” said Michael Griffin, the chairman of

CDD4. “It’s an interesting dilemma.

The question really becomes, who is responsible for mitigating the noise?

Is it the state because it’s a state road?

Is it the CDD?” According to Steve Zielinski, chief financial officer of the Inter-District Authority, the district is currently working with the engineering firm Kimley-Horn Planning and Design Engineering Consultants to possibly perform a sound study.

Zielinski said the district is weighing the cost of the study and the benefits of conducting a study.

If conducted, the district would send the study to the Florida Department of Transportation.

“Whether corrective action will take place remains to be seen, but we can certainly relay the info,” Zielinski said.

He also said Kimley-Horn would likely be contracted to make recommendations for modifying a berm separating part of the eastern portion of Greenbrook from State Road 70, with the probable outcome being more foliage to reduce the sight of traffic and car headlights and a possibility of the berm being heightened to block out more sound.

Zielinski said an increase to the size of the berm is possible, but there are concerns about the impact the increase would have on plants already on top of the berm.

Zielinski plans to present these options at a CDD4 meeting April 20.

tion, the most recent noise study on the area was conducted in 2001 and received an addendum in 2003. It concluded that noise in Greenbrook needed to quadruple for the neighborhood to receive a state-funded wall.

James also said that as the 2003 addendum already analyzed State Road 70 based on the current sixlane configuration, FDOT will not conduct a new noise study unless there is another road expansion.

James said FDOT does not have a set policy or procedure for what actions to take based on a privately conducted noise study.

“We’d take it up to management,” he said.

James said that although FDOT does review private studies, he does not know of any instances in which this has resulted in new studies or mitigation efforts by the state.

He explained that FDOT makes its projections based on the maximum traffic a road will hold at the posted speed limit, and that a private firm would have to prove excess sound based on FDOT criteria to initiate intervention by FDOT. Zielinski said that even if a wall is approved, immediate satisfaction is not realistic.

“They’re going to have to go through FDOT and get the funding approved, the whole bureaucratic process,” Zielinski said. “By the time the tug-of-war ends, it could be two years down the road; it could be three years down the road.”

Some Greenbrook residents hope for a sound wall like the one alongside the community of Summerfield.

Kevin Browning, who also lives on Glossy Ibis Place, had his home built in 2002, and said the noise is a constant nuisance for him. As a result, he hopes to have hinged shutters installed on his windows to mitigate the sound. To block out noise at night, he uses a sound generator that mimics low vibration sounds such as “one of those loud hotel airconditioners.”

As a former emergency room director at Blake Hospital in Bradenton, Browning said he appreciates the importance of wide roads for ambulances. He said that at the time he bought the home, he was aware the road would be widened but did not realize the effect the changes would have, for he expected the widening to take place in the direction of the road median, not toward the neighborhood.

Veronica Belmont, another resident of Glossy Ibis Place, said the general sound of the traffic doesn’t bother her as it does others, comparing it to the sound of surf. However, she said she is bothered by vehicles with mufflers designed to make them louder, and that she thinks cars speeding is contributing to much of the noise. She said the sounds are “embarrassing” when friends and family come to stay at her home.

Belmont said the problem began with the installation of a traffic light at the intersection of Greenbrook Boulevard and State Road 70 about four years ago.

“Just as the light turns yellow, they go screaming through it,” she said.

“It makes a real racket. Sometimes on the weekend, you’ll wake up during the night, around 2 o’clock in the morning.”

Belmont said that while she hopes a solution can be found, for aesthetic reasons, she does not want a wall.

Instead, she suggested more patrolling as a potential solution.

Tarron Khemraj, a Glossy Ibis Place resident, said he can’t use the lanai to have dinner outside anymore due to the noise.

“It’s gotten really bad where you really cannot be outdoors,” Khemraj said. “If you close the windows once you’re inside, there’s a little bit of relief, but it’s still not as quiet as it used to be.”

Kathy Black, who lives on Glossy Ibis Place, said after installing sound-resistant windows, she and her husband have noticed a great improvement.

“But that was $11,000,” she said, explaining that she still hopes for noise mitigation so that residents do not have to pay such a high price.

According to Zielinski, one related complaint from residents is likely to be rectified much sooner, as improvements to a berm separating a portion of east Greenbrook from State Road 70 are potentially on the way. The Inter-District Authority is looking into the possibility of replacing the plants, based on recommendations Kimley-Horn would provide.

“The plant improvements are going to be a no-brainer,” Zielinski said. “The expectations are that we’ll probably proceed with that.”

He noted that the original trees have grown higher, resulting in visibility of cars and car headlights. Carney and Belmont also said the berm is in great need of maintenance, and O’Neill hopes for the berm to be extended to the area of his home.

by Browning, who said he can now see over it from either side. However, Zielinski said it is unlikely the berm would be heightened to block out sound, in the case that a wall is built.

“The berm implemented in the Greenbrook system was much higher than the berm in Summerfield,” Zielinski said. “There would be no cause to increase the height and have a wall as well.”

The anticipated start date for the enhancements is approximately the middle of June. Initiating the project at that time allows the district to reduce costs by making use of rainwater instead of irrigable water.

However, with the uncertainty surrounding a solution to the noise issues, residents still hope for an answer.

“I feel that too many excuses are being made,” Khemraj said. “The wall should have been done 21 years ago.”

District officials said they are currently managing the situation as best as they can.

“It’s not going to be remedied or rectified within a month,” Zielinski said. “We are on top of it, with the powers enabled by the district.”

Besides the middle school building, the church also built a park behind the middle school, as well as a small park at the front of the school.

The park behind the middle school, which is open to the public, has a disc golf course, exercise equipment, a walking trail and more.

The church also is expanding the Woodland Fine Arts Academy, a ministry that provides dance, music and other fine arts lessons.

New classes that will be included in the Woodland Fine Arts Academy are digital art, photography, film, editing, sound and lighting and edible art. Edible arts is baking cookies, cake decorating and other aspects of baking and cooking.

“They’re more technology-based art forms,” Passmore said. “We’re finding kids have a lot more interest in that. Over the pandemic, students were spending more time

oodland Community Academy’s school year didn’t start off as planned.

The school spent the first three weeks sending middle school students on field trips rather than having them in the classroom because the school’s new middle school building wasn’t complete.

“We just took the kids everywhere,” said Jennifer Passmore, the director of Woodland Community Academy.

“We’ve had to be flexible this year.

Starting out not in our building made things a huge challenge, but as we’ve started, we’ve seen this isn’t working or this does work.”

Now the middle school students and staff are in a groove in the new 13,500-square-foot building that houses the middle school. The second floor houses church administrative offices.

Woodland Community Academy serves infants through seventh grade with a plan to expand to eighth grade next school year.

“It’s awesome,” Passmore said. “It was well worth the wait. The classrooms are designed specifically for the needs of middle school kids. It makes a huge difference for them.”

Woodland Community Church planned to break ground on the middle school in spring 2020, but the pandemic hit, causing the groundbreaking to be postponed. The church broke ground on the $4.6 million expansion in September 2020.

“It was a long process because we had all the civil work we had to do first before we started the actual construction of the building,” said Dewayne McFarlin, executive pastor at Woodland Community Church.

Passmore and McFarlin said there are no plans to add a high school to

the campus.

Passmore said the classrooms are rectangular in shape rather than square because “that pulls the teacher closer to the students.”

The classrooms feature tables at different heights that allow all students to see the teacher at the front of the classroom without being blocked by other students.

“Attention is in the eyes,” Passmore said. “Wherever your eyes are, that’s where your focus and attention is.”

The tables also allow students to work collaboratively. The tables are on wheels so they can be easily moved into groups.

Passmore said Woodland Community Academy’s approach to middle school differs from other schools.

“We have a strong public education in Manatee County, but even with the best schools, middle school is tough, and one of the things we wanted to do was approach it much differently,” Passmore said.

Besides academics, a priority for the middle school is to address students’ social and spiritual needs.

“It’s the question that middle school kids are asking: ‘Who am I?’” Passmore said. “Being able to start from the ground up a school that would go after those needs, it’s going to be interesting to see how it affects the students academically. We’ve already seen a lot of academic progress. Kids work hard. We have few discipline issues. We feel like a lot of that is related to the spiritual and social need and making sure those things are met.”

To address those needs, Passmore said the middle school provides 30 minutes per day for advisory meetings in which students learn about emotional intelligence, their spiritual being and aspects of social learning.

Lakewood Ranch-area residents say they might have to make some choices as inflation rages throughout the United States.

But what to give up?

A check with 30 East County residents found that they are indeed considering making some changes to their budgets.

“I’m making different decisions,” said Sevine Aydemir of Lakewood Ranch. “I now buy gas from Costco.

Before, I didn’t even know Costco had gas. I would go to the mostconvenient location, and I wouldn’t even look at price. But now it’s much more selective decisions, much more conscious decisions.”

While it might not be a case of going without — at least not yet — local residents did echo Aydemir’s response that they are putting more thought into their spending habits.

Lakewood Ranch resident Esther Robbins said the way some businesses are handling inflation causes her to plan her spending more than she did. Robbins said she is paying more for commodities that actually are worth less.

“I call it skimpflation,” Robbins said. “People are skimping on services but charging more.”

As a result, Robbins said she now is more focused on her family’s immediate needs that include groceries, schooling, clothing and health care.

In terms of entertainment, she takes advantage of free offerings, such as parks and beaches.

nandez said her rent is now $2,200 a month, up from $1,500 in 2018.

“It’s been progressively worse, and it’s definitely affecting single parents and single-income households in a major way,” Hernandez said. “I don’t want to live with my mother, so it’s making me a bit nervous.”

With inflation commanding more attention, 30 residents were asked how they plan on adjusting their spending habits if things get worse.

Those interviewed ranked five areas of spending from 1 to 5, with 1 being the area they would be most likely to cut back spending and 5 being the area they would be least likely to cut back spending.

The five categories were dining out, entertainment, travel, nonessential shopping and participation in clubs and organizations.

“We like to support local restaurants, and we’re kind of foodies, so we like the eclectic food choices that are around the Sarasota-Bradenton area,” said Waterside’s Chris Burns, who indicated that was not an area where they would cut back.

Apparently, area residents don’t like the thought of cutting back on their dining options.

“I enjoy experiencing new foods, new restaurants, new food trucks,

Their five choices were non-essential shopping, entertainment, participation in clubs and organizations, travel and dining out.

For some residents, there were reasons not to cut back on dining out, even if it meant paying more.

“I hate doing dishes,” said Lakewood Ranch’s Eric Wilder. “Just in general, I like dining out. Nothing crazy, no five-star restaurants, but I like to go out to eat.”

Hernandez said dining out was the only item on the list that she would have a hard time abandoning.

“I don’t like to cook every night, and as a single mom, I’m tired,” Hernandez said.

When it came to travel, there was slightly less of a consensus.

Jennifer Atherley, a Lakewood Ranch resident who formerly worked for the Anguilla Tourist Board, said that her experience in the travel sector made her attuned to the topic.

“You should see nature, another area, another town, and you shouldn’t just stay where you are,” Atherley said. “There’s so much to see and learn in Florida. Then you can go to other states.”

Kate LaBonte, who owns a Kilwins confectionary in Waterside Place, said, “I would never stop traveling.”

She said during the early stages of COVID-19, she was displeased when she was unable to travel.

“I thought I was going to die when we couldn’t travel,” she said. “It was kind of a nervous breakdown.”

However, some residents are OK with spending more time at home until prices are more steady.

Some said there is no reason to travel when you live in Florida because it already is a resort area.

“I believe we have the best beaches,” Waterside’s Aurora Mundren said. “Lido is my favorite. I don’t need to go anywhere except to visit my kids and for them to come here.

Otherwise, we don’t need to leave.

We have everything around us.”

Non-essential shopping often

“Personally, I don’t need jewelry,” Jason Kraft said. “I don’t need a hot rod-looking vehicle. I promised myself I’d wait for the hydrogenpowered vehicle to come out before I even buy one.”

Atherly, however, said she will continue to enjoy shopping even with escalating prices. She said her shopping skills allow her to find good bargains and keep her spending at an acceptable level.

“I can remember price points from other stores and say, ‘What’s going on here? What’s the best value?’” she said. “I think you need to be smarter when you’re shopping. You can’t just shop like you did 10 years ago or five years ago. You have to constantly mix it up and get the items that you’re going to use for now and then go back out because the price points are going to constantly change.”

Entertainment was midway on most people’s list.

“Entertainment — we’re getting it for free,” said Mundren while attending Ranch Night Wednesdays.

“What more can you ask for? You come home from work, you change, and you come in and enjoy the night.

This is something that we never had up north that we really enjoy, and something to be thankful for.”

When it came to clubs and organizations, the majority of those interviewed highlighted the many free offerings of Lakewood Ranch, but some favored maintaining memberships.

Bradenton’s Graham Devitt said he wouldn’t cut back on his participation in clubs and organizations because that was his chance to give back to the community.

Atherley said she didn’t need clubs or organizations to meet people.

“There’s so much free, low-hanging fruit,” she said. “You can meet people in all kinds of different situations.”

Atherley said she has been to all of the museums in the area.

“I love to support the arts,” she said. “They’re important.”

Lakewood Ranch offers a variety of free events to attend throughout the week and weekend, giving residents like Summerfield’s Maddie Abbacchi options for events to attend.

“With Waterside having the Farmers Market and Ranch Night Wednesdays, you can find social events without having to join a club,” Abbacchi said. “You can also join lots of Facebook groups for the area.”

The items on the list were not the only ones on residents’ minds.

Country Club’s Mike Loos said his No. 1 concern is his family, and he doesn’t worry about the rest of it.

“I just make sure they’re all safe, secure and that they get the things they want,” he said. “That’s really all that matters.”

ith the Rosedale community coming together to support him, Army Sgt. Chad Rozanski lined up his tee shot and took a mighty swing from his wheelchair during the Rosedale Golf Classic on April 6.

“Sometimes I fall out of the chair,” Rozanski said with a laugh. “That’s usually my best swing.”

Rozanski meets other obstacles of life with similar determination and sometimes humor.

On July 2, 2006, Rozanski’s Army vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device in Ramandi, Iraq. He was pinned under the burning wreckage, and it took his fellow soldiers almost an hour to free him. After Rozanski was sent back to the United States for treatment, doctors had to amputate both his legs above the knee while also performing skin grafts due to the burns he suffered over 40% of his body.

Ever since, his best swings at life sometimes have resulted in a fall, but he pushes ahead to live as “normal” a life as possible.

Unfortunately, in that pursuit, he never has been able to call his home a sanctuary. Like many injured veterans, navigating though a house or apartment not meant for a person with physical challenges can lead to frustration and stress.

That’s about to change for Rozanski.

Started by Rosedale’s Deb Kehoe and Kathi Skelton in 2014, the Rosedale Golf Classic raises funds for the nonprofit Homes for Our Troops.

Rozanski was the tournament’s main recipient this year and will move into a new Lake Nona home by the end of the summer.

“I didn’t know this was an option,” said Rozanski, a single father of two.

“Throughout the years, I have just lived in a normal home. After a while, you get used to not being able to access all the areas. I just accepted it. … This is the way my life would be forever.”

Three years ago, he contacted Homes for Our Troops about the possibility of getting help modifying his home.

“They said they couldn’t help me modify my home, but they could build me a home from the ground up,” Rozanski said.

He wanted to believe it, but as he put it, “With everything going on in the world, it can be hard to stay steady.

“I had reservations (about receiving a new home) in the back of my mind. But then we had a kickoff ceremony (before breaking ground on the new home), and I knew this was real. This was happening.”

Brig. Gen. Tom Landwermeyer, the CEO and president of Homes for Our Troops, traveled from the nonprofit’s Taunten, Massachusetts, office to celebrate the moment.

“Without the American public, we can’t do what we do,” Landwermeyer said, adding that Homes for Our Troops has built 330 homes across 42

states for disabled veterans. “This is our moral obligation. We are repaying a very small part of the debt we owe them. They have sacrificed their freedom and independence.”

Landwermeyer said that 95% of the veterans who have received a specially adapted custom home from Home for Our Troops have said they had substantial stress reduction on their family. The employment rate of those who have moved into the custom homes doubled, and the employment for their main caregiver tripled.

“We have seen life-changing impacts,” Landwermeyer said.

Skelton and Kehoe estimated the Rosedale Golf Classic and its associated fundraisers will donate $175,679 to Homes for Our Troops in 2022.

The amount will break the record of $161,000 from 2020. The event raised $132,905 in 2021 even though no tournament was scheduled due to the pandemic.

Landwermeyer said the Rosedale Golf Classic has become one of the top two fundraisers in the country for Homes for Our Troops, which gives the homes to the veterans at no cost.

“Those two ladies (Skelton and Kehoe) and their husbands are out in the community all year long,” he said. “A few days after this is over, they will start working on next year’s event. People know who we are here and what we do because of them.

Those two ladies have hit me here (touching his heart) with their dedication and their love for veterans.”

He also noted that no area he visits has more patriotism than the Rosedale Golf Classic.

“Everyone here has a passion for the mission,” he said.

Rozanski said the community’s embrace has been overwhelming.

“This is such a great grassroots community,” Rozanski. “It is truly unique and special here, and they treat you like you are a special family member. It restores your faith in America.”

Among the other veterans on hand who have benefited from the program was Michael Monthervil, an E4 specialist in the Army when he was injured in a training exercise in Afghanistan in 2014. He fractured his spine and lost the use of his legs.

Monthervil will receive a custom adapted home in San Antonio in about 10 months.

His fiancée, Ashley Nicklas, said the new home will not only give Monthervil independence but also do the same for her, since it frees her from many of her caretaker duties.

Monthervil, who has limited use of his hands, gave an example of not having door handles anymore that he can’t grip. And access in the bathroom to the shower finally will be realized.

The kitchen counters will be accessible.

“I will be able to wash dishes,” he said.

Nicklas laughed a bit and added a big “yes.”

In the end, though, Nicklas said the custom home will allow Monthervil to pursue the many goals he has accumulated.

Rozanski, who is raising his 13-year-old son, Logan, and 5-yearold daughter, Lydia, said he feels the same way.

“I am going to be living in a home with no barriers,” he said. “I can take a cup of coffee from the kitchen to the back porch. The way I would explain it is that if you take a rock and throw it in a pond, you get that initial huge splash, and then you get the ripple effect. This is going to change my life and my children’s lives.”

Is Korê the tip of the iceberg?

W hile walking through Waterside Place in Lakewood Ranch, I passed the front door of Korê Steakhouse and saw the sign in the window.

It said the restaurant did not allow its employees to accept tips.

And a memory flashed through my mind.

It was many years ago, when I was an 18-year-old making money by working as a waiter in an Italian restaurant. You have to understand, at this time an entrée cost about $4, and a bill that included dinner and drinks for two might be $10 to $12.

So if the tip was $2, you were feeling pretty good.

On this particular evening, I was serving a guest who was simply a miserable human being. Nothing was good enough, and he wasn’t shy about making his feelings known. His wife was embarrassed, but it didn’t matter, he kept berating me. Finally, the couple left.

Hallelujah.

But the fun wasn’t over. In cleaning off the table, I found my tip. It was a quarter.

With this particular patron, I would have been happier with nothing, but the tiny tip had a catch. The guest had taken a glass of water, slipped the quarter in it, and then slammed the glass upside down on the table. Therefore, the only way to clean off the table, and get to the quarter, was to have water run all over the table.

Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.

But the incident did give me an appreciation for tips and what it means to service workers to get them, or not get them.

I’ve also experienced the other side of the spectrum. In between journalism jobs, I once bartended in Indianapolis at a nice restaurant along a reservoir. It was a beautiful setting to take a date, and one evening I was cashing out a guy’s

credit card when it was declined. I very subtly motioned the guy over and explained the situation. He said it simply was some odd problem, but he appreciated that I didn’t announce it at his table so that his date would hear. He paid the bill with a $100 bill, then handed me another $100 bill. Nice.

Certainly, most tips fall somewhere in the middle, but as a service person, it’s hard not to react to the highs and lows.

When I did the job, crummy tips annoyed me, and huge tips sent me out on the town to celebrate my good fortune.

As a consumer, you should

understand that your tips can have such an effect.

One night while living in Crawfordsville, Indiana, I saw a couple of patrons stiff the bartender. She never flinched, even as a I noted to her that it was pretty creepy that they had been ordering her all around and had plenty of money for the drinks themselves.

“It’s OK,” she said. “Somebody will give me way too big a tip. It evens out.”

Wow, I thought. What a great attitude, and certainly one that made sense.

I will say that service people don’t have to worry about their

tips “evening out” when I am at the table. No, I am not the $100 guy, but I am repulsed by the quarter guy, too. I basically start at 20% and go up from there if I get exceptional service. I have to admit I tip crappy service about the same as I do good service. I have a feeling I am not alone in this respect.

I know the service people need to make their living, and tips are a big part of it. So when they are rude, or slow, or inattentive, or obnoxious, I think about putting the quarter under a glass of water, and then fork over 20%. My mind wanders to the thought that this waiter was just having a bad day or had a fight with a significant other, or had been scolded by management. I don’t want to make things worse.

Over the years, I pretty much have accepted I am going to be a 20% tipper whether I have spaghetti dumped on my lap or my steak is turned into rubber.

Of course, there were a few twists and turns I never expected.

One was during a trip to a fine Italian restaurant in Marina Del Rey in the Los Angeles area.

I was eating dinner with a group of seven other journalists covering a football game. We had a wonderful time, divided up the check eight ways, paid and left.

Then I started thinking about the numbers. It seemed way too expensive for what we ordered. We finally figured out that the restaurant had added 20% to the bill automatically, which wasn’t a common practice like it is today. We took the bill, and the 20% tip, and added another 20% to it. The waiter must have been happy.

It did make me a bit more paranoid about making sure a tip hasn’t already been added. I admit I am offended by “automatic” tips when the concept is that good service should be rewarded. In our current world of tipping, 20% is expected,

not earned. It kind of rubs me wrong.

Things seem to have gotten worse. More people than ever have their hand out for a tip when they complete the simplest of tasks. I had a haircut, and the cash register spit out a receipt that had boxes for a $2 tip, a $3 tip or a $5 tip. No $1?

No $4? I checked the $5 box because I am a sheep.

Who to tip? When not to tip?

How much to tip? It all has become very foggy.

Think about a cruise. If you buy a drink package, you automatically are charged 18% to 20% of the entire amount for tips before you board the ship. But cruise lines urge you to tip more if you receive good service.

Didn’t I already tip for good service?

So, thank you Korê for bringing a little attention to the subject.

Personally, I would ask all restaurants to charge me more and stop all this tipping nonsense. It is a concept that has failed over the years in other parts of the country, such as New York and San Francisco, because restaurant owners have stiffed their employees when it comes to distributing the added cost to the menu items, but perhaps the time now is right.

I am willing to give it a try.

It’s got to make me feel better than dishing over 20% for poor service.

And just remember, I’ve always got a quarter in my pocket.

The legacy continues Drill team leaders prepare underclassmen with skills, knowledge to keep achieving.

After dedicating four years to the Braden River High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps drill team, Brett Brustad has finished his senior year with success at the state championship.

Brustad, a battalion commander, said he’s happy to hand over the reins to those who will remain in the program after he graduates.

“I’m ready to go,” Brustad said.

Freshman Madison Kelley is ready to stay.

“I’m ready to keep going,” Kelley said. “My main thing next year is I’m excited to take the freshmen under my wing like the seniors, juniors and sophomores did for me this year. I can teach them the tricks and techniques to keep the legacy (of winning) alive.”

Members of the Braden River High School JROTC drill team won and placed high in several categories at the state championships April 2 at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland, adding to the team’s perennial success.

The JROTC drill team won its sixth consecutive regional drill team championship and has placed in the top five teams at the state championship in each of the last six years.

“It feels like four years of hard work has paid off, and it feels satisfying to end with the championship,” senior Elayna Andrews said.

Throughout the year, the leaders of the program instill high standards and values in the younger cadets and look for students who could become leaders and continue the program’s success.

“Every year is kind of scary because when you’re a freshman, you’re worried you won’t ever be able to play catch-up to the upperclassmen,” junior Julianna Chupp said. “Then the rest of your years you’re worried the freshmen won’t catch up to you. But every year we pull through and do great.”

Kelley said it’s a confidence booster when the freshmen meet the standards the upperclassmen have set.

Kelley created a rifle spinning routine this year and appreciated the constructive criticism the upperclassmen gave her to improve.

“It motivates me when they take time out for you,” Kelley said.

Chupp said new leaders are chosen based on their skills, dedication and leadership traits.

“If you’re good at spinning or marching, but you don’t show up to practice or your grades are constantly down, you’re not going to be chosen for positions because dependability is just as important as the skill,” Chupp said.

they look for cadets who exhibit the ability to motivate others, a positive attitude, dedication and the ability to balance hard work with fun.

Adanna Wharton, a sophomore, has looked to the upperclassmen to see what traits she needs in order to become a leader.

“I look for the types of leaders that would motivate me to do drill,” Wharton said. “What I see them do that makes me feel good about being on the drill team is what I want to do.”

For example, she has seen leaders motivate team members rather than yell at them.

“When we’re marching back from practice, we do cadences, and that’s motivating to me,” Wharton said.

“We yell a lot in the cadences, and that’s fun. But if we’re just marching back and someone’s yelling at the entire drill team, then it’s not fun. It’s not motivating.”

Chupp said drill team members always have to work toward improving themselves and their skills.

“You can get to a certain point where you’re like, ‘I’m pretty good at everything now,’ but you’re not because you meet new people and you realize they’re better than you,” Chupp said.

Wharton said the program doesn’t have to worry when seniors graduate because they’ve taught younger members the discipline and dedication it takes to succeed.

“We don’t have to worry what’s going to happen when the seniors are gone because it seems like instead of losing those people and getting worse, you still end up getting better,” Wharton said.

hiara Diaz has been in love with theater since she was in third grade.

Growing up, she was obsessed with watching YouTube videos showing behind the scenes of Lakewood Ranch High School theater productions.

When she watched the students perform “Mamma Mia” and “The Little Mermaid” at the high school, she knew she wanted to be on that stage someday.

But when the pandemic hit in March 2020 and she was in seventh grade, she worried theater wouldn’t be an option for her in high school.

Productions had been suspended.

“I was worried that (the pandemic) was still going to be going on, and I wouldn’t be able to perform anything,” she said.

Now a freshman at Lakewood Ranch High School, Diaz doesn’t have to worry. She will step on the stage for the first time April 22 during the school’s cabaret show, “Seize the Night, It’s Broadway Night.”

Students at Lakewood Ranch and Braden River high schools are thrilled to be back on stage after having limited chances over the past two years due to the pandemic. Lakewood Ranch has had no live productions since the beginning of the pandemic, and Braden River has had just one.

“It’s extremely refreshing to be back on stage, where we can present ourselves to a good audience with such a good musical to put on stage,” said Nicole Lykiardopoulos, a senior at Braden River.

Lykiardopoulos said “Chicago” features iconic songs that are fun to bring back to life.

The cabaret show, a one-night only performance April 22, will be Lakewood Ranch’s first in-person production since the pandemic began.

The cabaret show is an annual tradition at Lakewood Ranch High School.

“I’m looking forward to being back and seeing the audience,” said Ally Adamo, a Lakewood Ranch senior.

“We’re working with our cho-

rus, band and orchestra, so it feels like all the music departments are coming together as one. It’s nice to see because we’ve never done that before. It’s nice to see everybody working together on this.”

Lakewood Ranch students will be performing numbers from various broadway musicals, including “Tick, Tick…Boom,” “Six,” “Wicked” and “The Music Man” in the first act, followed by a one-act play in the second act.

“It’s so nice you get to see all the different skill sets of all the different kids,” said Sienna Zwizinski, a Lakewood Ranch junior. “It’s awesome to see everyone come together, especially with the cast this big. It’s nice to have everybody back and the love of arts filling the room.”

Several students are looking forward to having a live audience again rather than looking into a camera or prerecording performances for a virtual production.

“The audience is basically an actor’s fuel,” Lykiardopoulos said.

“It’s what gets you going when the audience reacts and makes you feel all the more better about things. It makes you want to perform better for them. It just brings out the absolute best inside of you.”

Adamo and Zwizinski performed a “Zoomsical” last school year in which they prerecorded performances from home using green screens.

Zwizinski said having a virtual performance provides a new set of problems from performing in person, including having to develop their costumes at home, working with green screens, which neither of them have had experience with, and prerecording vocals.

Adamo said having access to costumes, makeup and settings elevates performances.

“It helps to bring out your character more when you’re in costume,” Adamo said. “You kind of are like, ‘OK, wow, this is the real thing.

We’re putting on a show or doing this number.’”

Adamo said in-person performances also give students more memories as they work together during rehearsals and perform in front of audiences.

County officials should have acted sooner In the March 31 “Culture of corruption” article, Manatee County Commissioner Vanessa Baugh openly admitted, without any sense of embarrassment, that favoritism in code enforcement is the “tip of the iceberg.”

Administrator Scott Hopes was quoted as saying: “What’s most concerning to me is this behavior and this culture existed for a number of years.”

So if Baugh (and presumably the other six commissioners) knew about this for so long, why haven’t they done anything about it, like firing or filing legal charges against those participating in the favoritism?

Simply retraining, rehabilitating or transferring to new positions is not harsh enough. Sounds like the commissioners, and even Hopes, are accomplices in running a protection racket by looking the other way for so long and violating their fiduciary obligations to the voters.

They wonder why the voters don’t trust them. Maybe our ambitious Attorney General Ashley Moody would be interested in this situation. Regardless of her actions, we should fire all the commissioners next election.

Another sign of the incompetence of the commissioners has to do with the Fort Hamer bridge. When planned in 2015 to lighten traffic on I-75, its roadway was planned for one traffic lane in each direction, two shoulders and two bicycle lanes

One final thing. Mr. Google couldn’t find an organization chart for the Manatee County Public Works Department. MyManatee. org lists 15 departments but no organization charts for any of them to show the hierarchy and the top managers’ names.

Reminder about cell phone laws My son and daughter-in-law from Charlotte, North Carolina, were recently visiting me and decided to drive to St. Armands and Longboat Key. They were driving about 20 mph in the roundabout at State Road 41 and Fruitville Road when my son received a call on his work phone.

He picked it up and was videotaped and apprehended by a police officer for holding the cell phone while driving. He was not given a warning but was presented with a ticket and three points on his license. Being a visitor, he was not aware of the 2019 Florida law that states “hands-free devices must be used when driving in certain designated areas, including school and crossing zones, work zones and construction zones.”

Relax your chest, arms and neck. Inhale through your nose, slowly, for four seconds. Hold it for two to four seconds, then exhale through your nose for four more.

Pause for two seconds, then start the cycle again, noting how the air follows a 360-degree pattern through your body.

This is the essence of crocodile breathing, a technique that some athletes use to relax their minds and get in touch with their bodies. That list includes The Out-of-Door Academy girls lacrosse players, who in 2022 have put an emphasis on mental health under Coach Carolyn Keber.

If the Thunder is any indication of the technique’s effectiveness, more teams should try it — despite how silly it might look to outsiders.

As of April 6, ODA is 12-1 in 2022 after going 8-8 a season ago. The team’s lone loss came March 29, a 20-6 home defeat at the hands of Olentangy Liberty, a school from Powell, Ohio, that features four NCAA Division I-committed players. Outside of that loss, the Thunder is dominating its competition, outscoring its Florida opponents 209 to 69.

ODA is ranked 44th nationally, 13th in the state and sixth in Class 1A

by MaxPreps; the FHSAA’s rankings have the Thunder 10th in the state and fifth in Class 1A. There’s more to the team’s success than funky breathing techniques, though. The team has bona fide scorers, including senior Dani Taraska, who has 33 goals on the season according to MaxPreps, senior Megan Dowdell, who has 37, and sophomore Aubrey Robbins, who has 40. They also get strong two-way play from seniors like Austin Bonacuse and Cristina Harold and steady goaltending from junior Emma Bonacuse. As the players tell it, though, the team’s attitude has just as much to do with its success as its talent.

“At the end of last season, we started saying ‘PMA,’ which means positive mental attitude,” Harold said. “That carried into this year.

Every time something does not go our way, we scream, ‘PMA,’ and try to build each other up instead of thinking about what happened.”

Not everything the Thunder has tried has been effective. Keber said the team attempted a group yoga session at practice early in the season and the players were less than enthusiastic about it, so they didn’t try it again.

And the crocodile breathing, which Bonacuse said genuinely helped her calm her nerves, can actually be too effective, tamping down the team’s killer instinct before big games. The exercise is now reserved for practice and the night before a big game, letting the team wake up refreshed and ready.

Keber said the team will continue to implement new ideas and exercises centered around the idea of positivity. Creating a culture that lifts up instead of putting down has been a mission of hers since taking over the program three years ago.

“I remember what it is like to be a teenage athlete,” Keber said. “When you are competitive like a lot of girls are, you are hard on yourself. If a teammate or a coach is also going hard on you, that’s not going to make you play any better. They’re already upset enough. The way that we are going to win and get better is by supporting each other and being positive. The fun exercises, that’s a part of all this. We’re teaching them that sports are a segue to good life habits.”

Along with the attitude adjustment, it helps that the Thunder returned every player from last year’s team. Bonacuse said having built-in chemistry at the beginning of the season allowed the team to get a jump-start during training instead of having to learn everyone’s tendencies and strengths.

They implemented a new defensive strategy, playing a zone concept except for one player, Taraska, who acts as a “backer,” tasked with stopping everything that gets through the zone. That double layer of defense, as Keber calls it, helps prevent opposing offenses from hogging possession time. When ODA gets the ball back, Keber said, the team’s transition game has been equally strong, churning up the field and getting the ball on the sticks of the team’s top-tier scorers.

It has been a deadly plan for ODA opponents in 2022. Even the team’s loss against Olentangy Liberty provided more hope than horror. Keber said she focused on the fact that the Thunder scored six goals in the game, the second most the Patriots have allowed in a game this season.

Now that the postseason has arrived, another loss will mean the team’s season is over.

No matter how far ODA gets, Keber is happy that her philosophy of positive thinking is making a difference in her players’ lives.

“This is a special group,” Keber said. “I commend the girls’ commitment. I mean, they are all in. It has been awesome to see them embrace this culture.”

There’s no tying in baseball!

T

he tie does not, in fact, go to the runner.

It’s something you hear at every baseball game. There’s a close play at first base, almost instantaneous, and the crowd sides with the batter, assuming the batter gets that advantage. “The tie goes to the runner,” as the saying goes. The only problem with that is the saying is wrong. By rule, the runner has to beat the ball to the bag in order to be called safe. If there’s a tie, that means the runner did not beat the ball and therefore is out.

It’s the first thing I was taught during my Little League umpire training back in high school. I wore the blue uniform for two-and-ahalf years before I graduated. I was good at it, too. I even worked a few All-Star games. I haven’t thought much about that time in my life since then, but I still have my Olney Boys and Girls Club umpire shirt and my clicker for tallying balls and strikes.

Yes, despite all the guff you get from parents, coaches and even players — who usually have no idea what they’re talking about — once you’re an ump, you can never fully let go – something the guys who work the Lakewood Ranch Little League games know all too well.

Take Reggie Simmons, for example. Simmons moved to the area from Philadelphia five years ago. He was a veteran umpire, but when he moved to Lakewood Ranch, his first instinct was to leave that part of his life behind. When he attended his sons’ first weekend of Little League games, though, he couldn’t help himself. He struck up a conversation with the ump working one of the games and told him he missed

an easy infield fly call. That umpire turned out to be Jeff Parrill, the league’s umpire in charge. “(Parrill) told me, ‘Give me your information because you’re going to be doing this for me,’” Simmons said.

Just like that, Simmons was back in. All these years later, he’s still doing it, alongside other veteran umps like Jermey Metters and Guy Vilt. I talked with all three on April 7, before Little League games that were eventually rained out. The trio has heard more insults from parents than a stand-up comic dishes out on tour. Most of it is cutting if uncreative, curse words and phrases that begin with A or F that you can probably guess. When I was an ump, I threw a parent out of a game for telling me, a 16-year-old kid, to screw off (except he didn’t say screw). In retrospect, this was the wrong move. I should have done what Vilt does and tell the coaches to control their parents or, if that fails, get the umpire in charge to handle it, avoiding direct contact.

Umps have to block out the noise and concentrate on calling the best possible game for the kids, Vilt said.

Easier said than done. It’s hard to resist the urge to talk back, even for veterans.

“Anybody can go stand on the field, but if you don’t know what you’re doing, it will show,” Simmons said. “It’s a job. We don’t go to other people’s jobs without any training and tell them what they’re doing right and wrong. ‘Oh, you just typed the number five? That should be a six. Come on, Betty, you’re horrible at this.’ It’s ridiculous.”

munities go. Without anyone to call the games, you can’t play. Parents could come out of the stands and try their hand, but that isn’t a good experience for anyone, most of all the kids who now have to deal with inconsistent calls.

Vilt said there are plenty of rules that seem to be misunderstood by parents and even coaches, many of whom have no experience and are volunteering because no one else would. The one rule that is the least understood, in his experience, is that a pitch that hits the batter’s hands results in the batter taking first base. It’s not a foul ball.

“There’s a saying we like to use: Dick’s Sporting Goods doesn’t sell bats with hands attached to them,” Vilt said. “Your hands are not part of the bat. Go take first base.”

Vilt said there is a sense of entitlement from many parents that has increased in recent seasons.

They paid for their kids to play, so they believe their kids should get all the calls. The problem is the parents on the other side paid, too. And more than anything else, Vilt said, parents need to understand that umpires could not care less about which team wins. Their only goal is to call a consistent game. Parents expect perfection, and that’s just not realistic. Vilt said an umpire

can call 90 pitches correctly and two incorrectly and parents will remember the two over the 90. It’s not fair, but it is how it is.

Vilt said the league has had trouble recruiting new umpires and as a result is short-staffed. Ideally, all games would feature two umpires, one behind the plate and one at second base. As it stands, the games on the league’s bigger fields get two, but games on the smaller fields only get a home plate ump, who then has to make a lot of calls out of position. When things are at their most dire, an ump might be asked to call a game on the big fields by himself.

It’s a shame, but I also understand it. Why would anyone want to take the abuse if they don’t have to? The answer for Metters is simple.

“I’m out here because I love the game of baseball,” Metters said. “If I have a bad day of work, I can come out here and forget about all of it. If I have a good game, it can turn a bad day into a good day.”

All three umpires agreed that the day they stop loving the game will be the last day they wear the uniform. When will that happen?

It’s tough to say. Maybe it never will. It’s a beautiful game, after all.

Simmons said he knows he did well when he gets a “good job, blue” from both coaches, not just whoev-

er’s team won. That makes him feel good. It’s also rewarding to watch the kids you used to umpire grow into phenoms, like former Lakewood Ranch Little Leaguer (and Lakewood Ranch High alum) Grant McCray, now with the San Francisco Giants organization. Sometimes, you even meet celebrity fans, like when Metters met Dick Vitale after calling one of Vitale’s grandchildren’s games.

If you’re reading this and are still unsympathetic to the plight of the umpire, why don’t you try it yourself? As I said, the league needs more bodies. Reach out to the league. Go to an umpiring clinic.

See how much you really know about the game. If you do well, consider helping out. It’s good for the game and good for the soul to give back in this way.

Just remember, the tie does not go to the runner. Ever.

When did you start doing track and field?

I started participating in track and field in seventh grade. I did it through eighth grade, then I stopped for my freshman and sophomore years. A friend of mine (sophomore Anthony Campbell) convinced me to do it again this year.

What is the appeal to you?

I think it is the atmosphere more than anything. Other sports, everyone talks bad about each other or complains about each other. Out here, everyone is supportive.

What is your favorite event?

My favorite event is the high jump, but I don’t know why. (Laughs.) I just like it. It’s fun.

What has been your biggest challenge?

I have been dealing with an ankle injury this year. I got it from jumping.

I have low arches, and I didn’t have any inserts while training. I haven’t missed any meets because of it, but it’s been challenging fighting through the pain of it.

What is your favorite food?

Either a steak or a burger. I get them cooked medium well.

What are your hobbies?

I like working on cars, including my personal Jeep. I mostly do stereo systems and audio stuff.

What is your favorite school subject?

I don’t know if I have one. It used to be math. I would have said math last year, but not now. I don’t like precalc too much. (Laughs.)

anther Ridge’s Brayden Williams had his eyes set on a large plastic bunny sitting among hundreds of eggs on the volleyball courts at Waterside Park.

As the DJ counted down to start the egg hunt, Williams, 6, positioned himself in a spot he thought would give him an advantage.

When the egg hunt began, he sprinted to the bunny while dozens of other children ran around the sand courts grabbing eggs and putting them in their baskets during EGGstravaganza on April 9.

Country Club’s Mark and Jennifer Eubanks couldn’t wait to watch

their 3-year-old daughter, Georgia Lily Eubanks, participate in her first EGGstravaganza.

“It’s a great kick off to Easter,” Jennifer Eubanks said.

Greenbrook’s Maureen Skinner, Judy Skinner and Ann Trick collectively spent 12 hours on April 8 stuffing eggs for the hunt.

“It was so much fun,” Trick said.

Judy Skinner said she loved seeing the children run around snatching up as many eggs as they could.

“What’s more fun than seeing the smiles on the children’s faces?” she said.

bigail McDonald and Mya Grant, a senior and junior, respectively, at Lakewood Ranch High School, were the first to hit the dance floor at the school’s prom April 8.

“I’m excited for the positive energy and for everyone to be happy together,” Grant said.

They later were joined by hundreds of juniors and seniors dancing in a huddle on the dance floor of the ballroom at the Hyatt Regency in Sarasota.

Ella Hansen, a senior, was thrilled to be able to dance with her friends Lani Fisher and Sara Mills, who also are seniors. She was grateful for the school being able to have a prom after having to cancel prom the past two years due to the pandemic.

“It’s so much fun,” Hansen said. “I’m so glad we were able to have (a prom). It’s one last hoorah.”

Stillpoint Mission fundraiser sets record Lakewood Ranch’s Bob Smith announced that the annual fundraising campaign to support the Stillpoint Mission has set a record with a $63,035 check for the Bradenton nonprofit.

Over the 11 years of the fundraising campaign, $236,985 has been collected for the Stillpoint Mission, which Smith said helps “the poorest of the poor” with food and clothing.

Stillpoint Mission told Smith that this year’s donation will buy more than 315,000 pounds of food.

“I am beyond words to describe my reaction to the generosity,” Smith said of those who donated to the cause.

He said 80 people made donations this year. He gave special thanks to the donation drive’s “captains”: Bob Keehn, Bob Zelen, Judy Balmer, Diane Brune, Ken Sulek, Julie Smith, Mike Lovell and Jane Imperiale. He also said Stillpoint Mission wouldn’t be able to function without its own volunteers: Gene Tischer, Marge Slepica, Jim Keiner and Karen Allen.

Data Dump returns in Lakewood Ranch The Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, Lakewood Ranch Community Activities and South Tech will combine to host Data Dump from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 22 at 8100 Lakewood Ranch Blvd.

The public is encouraged to dump outdated electronics at no charge.

According to a release, those who participate should pull up their car and a SouthTech employee will help unload the electronics and disassemble them if needed. Hard drives will be punched with an industrial drill press to prevent anyone from accessing data.

Accepted items include LCD monitors, printers, computers, laptops, keyboards, tablets, cables and phones. Items that cannot be accepted include televisions, batteries and CRT monitors.

“We are thrilled to once again be hosting the Data Dump alongside our partners this Earth Day,” Dan Sidler, vice president of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, said in a release. “The rate at which technology changes today, business owners are left with a tremendous amount of e-waste. We’re glad to offer our business members and community the opportunity to dispose of it in a manner that is free, secure and environmentally sustainable.”

Lakewood Ranch office park sold ​ The three-building office park at 9015 Town Center Parkway has been sold for $3.5 million. The buyer was an investment group that includes Harvey Sheldon, who owns 12 office properties in Florida and Colorado.

The 15,886-square-foot office park, fully leased at the time of sale, was built in 2003 and includes 81 parking spaces and office spaces.

The park is considered a condo of-

fice park: an office building with two or more individually owned units.

Amy MacDougall, of Ian Black Real Estate in Sarasota, brokered the deal for the seller and is the leasing manager at the property, a role she’ll keep under the new owners.

She said in an email that when it was first built “the owners divided the buildings into 12 office condos, in case they were to ever want to sell off separate offices, and created an association to care for the common areas and the property overall.”

“There has always been one ownership entity of these particular condos,” MacDougall said. “However, the option to sell off individual condos still exists.”

EASTER EGG-STRAVAGANZA Runs from noon to 3 p.m. at the Mall at University Town Center, 140 University Town Center Drive, Sarasota. Children ages 2 to 12 can enjoy an egg hunt with more than 40,000 eggs, live entertainment, games, bounce houses, a Kids Safety Expo, giveaways and more.

The first 1,000 children will receive a free egg hunt tote bag. The egg hunt is broken down by age.

Outside games, bounce houses and the egg hunt will be in parking lot 8 near Brio. Games, crafts and the Kids Safety Expo will be inside near the Dillard’s play area.
