Lid lifts on sewage turnover Two Lakewood Ranch districts target a January 2017 turnover of lift stations to the county.

Lakewood Ranch Community Development District supervisors have been talking a lot of ... sewage.

They hope they won’t have to keep doing it.

Lakewood Ranch CDDs 2 and 5 are taking steps to turn over three lift stations, two in CDD 2 and one in CDD 6, to Manatee County.

On March 28 and April 11, Lakewood Ranch operations and Manatee County staff oversaw what’s called a “soft dig,” an inspection of the piping that’s in place for the stations. The digs help verify pipe size, materials and other components of the sanitary system, which must be upgraded to Manatee County’s specifications before turnover can occur.

District Engineer Richard Ellis said the CDDs are working to move forward with the process, but don’t have a specific deadline.

“It’s going to take awhile,” he said. “We’re targeting January 2017. It’s been an ongoing process.”

Town Hall’s operations department kicked off the turnover process about a year ago and has spent much of the time learning what is required to turn the system over to Manatee County successfully.

HOW IT WORKS Wastewater from homes flows through pipes from residences to lift stations. Each station has two pumps, and as it fills up, the pumps cycle and push out the wastewater into a pipe that connects the lift station to the county’s waste treatment system.

CDD 6 turnover costs could total up to $100,000. Estimated costs for the CDD 2 turnover are still being determined.

“The intention is to have a design done for the upgrades by an engineer and that would go out to bid,” said Paul Chetlain, the Lakewood Ranch Town Hall operations director. “We hope it would be less, but there’s a number of things that have to get done.”

Although the cost to the district is significant, Chetlain said turning the system over will have its benefits, especially if a pump breaks or there’s a pipe leak. In December 2015, a pump in District 6 failed and had to be replaced, costing the district $12,000, for

example.

“At any point in time, you could have failures,” Chetlain said.

“Piping can get very costly, tens of thousands of dollars for a single leak. If turned over to Manatee County, all the maintenance would be the county’s. It’s a very long-term savings.”

Amy Pilson, Manatee County’s utilities public affairs liaison, said the turnover process for each system is the same, although each takes a different amount of time and has a different cost.

In every scenario, however, systems must be brought up to current Manatee County standards before the county will take ownership of them.

Most systems already connect to Manatee County’s current sanitary system through a connection, such as a force main. But, Pilson said, that connection does not guarantee a turnover.

Communities must pay for improvements to bring their systems up to current codes, which may be cost prohibitive for them.

And, Manatee County only will accept systems that will enhance their own, meaning it will not take responsibility for systems in areas that are undeveloped or would cost too much to maintain, she said.

are no plans to add it to the capital improvement plan, but commissioners will evaluate the plan over the summer to ensure roadway priorities are in line with the county’s needs.

“The growth we are seeing is going to dictate what we need to do, that and public safety,” she said. “We will see what we need to best move traffic.”

Business owners on both sides of the roadway say the connection would be advantageous both for themselves and their customers. It would provide an alternative north-south connector road besides I-75 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, which often are clogged with traffic.

Brian Lewis, a Mill Creek resident who owns Lewis Automotive on the north end, is one of them.

“I think they should do it as soon as possible,” he said, adding it would increase business. “It will ease traffic and take pressure off the other roadways. If you just have to go one exit, that would ease some traffic.”

Mechanic Nicholas Cimini, who also lives on the north side of Lena Road, agreed.

“I have to take the interstate all the time,” he said. “I could go straight down.”

On the south side, Realtor Mike Sporer, who helped with the development of the industrial/ office park there, has advocated for the road’s construction for a decade. He said the cul-de-sac where Lena Road dead-ends has become a waste yard for people who expect to drive north to the landfill.

“They need more north-south roads,” he said. “I just kept waiting. Back in the day, (former County Commissioner) Donna Hayes was championing this for us. When she was no longer on the county commission, everything sort of stopped. With the traffic situation as bad as it is on the freeway, it’s never been more logical to put that road through.”

Jeff Clary, owner of Giraffe Packaging and Moving, said customers would like to see the roadway extended, as would he.

“It would cut down drive time for customers on State Road 64,” he said. “We get asked at least once a week about the road. We’ve been hearing since move in and it still hasn’t been done.”

The land between the dead ends on each length of Lena Road span 2,268 feet, or about twofifths of a mile.

The land is held by nine property owners collectively, including four parcels along the northern end, where Lena Road curves eastward and turns into 41st Avenue East (Braden Drive) and ends in a cul-de-sac.

Those properties front Braden Drive to the north and run southward in narrow strips. From west to east: Michael and Joshua Heath own 3.42 acres; Alton and Faith Goodwin own 2.4 acres; and Harris Glasgow owns two adjoining parcels, each about 6 acres.

Immediately south is a Florida Power & Light easement.

Then, Manatee County owns the largest section of land, a 34-acre parcel with a large wetland.

Remaining owners are the LakewoodRanch Elks, who plan to build on a roughly eight-acre parcel, and Creekwood East Corporate Park, which owns a 3.2-acre property immediately north of the cul-de-sac.

Two private properties would be impacted if Lena Road extended straight from existing culde-sac to cul-de sac.

Harris Glasgow’s six acres and Creekwood East Corporate Park’s 3.2-acre parcel would be in direct line of the roadway. The other impacted sections include land owned

by Manatee County and an easement for Florida Power & Light.

ardly a day goes by without Lakewood Ranch resident Anita Pope hearing about Lena Road and its future.

The roadway ends as it heads both north and south, with a forrest in between.

Pope’s Lena Road-based business, Swim Gym of Lakewood Ranch, offers swim lessons in 10-minute sessions, forcing parents to be timely for their children’s appointments. But, accidents on Interstate 75 or neighboring roadways can have big impacts.

“It’s been quite a topic of conversation,” said Pope, who is on the southern section of the road.

“It’s every day because people are getting caught in the traffic.”

Lena Road is a designated thoroughfare on the county’s comprehensive plan and ultimately is planned to be a four-lane roadway connecting State Road 70 with State Road 64.

Currently, the northern section serves county property, including the Lena Road Landfill, and a mix of separate low-density residential and non-residential uses.

The southern section lies within the Creekwood East Development of Regional Impact, a largescale development that spans west to the Creekwood neighborhood and east of Lena Road.

Sage Kamiya, deputy director of traffic management for Manatee County Public Works, said the project is not included in the county’s five-year capital improvement plan.

“The future 44th Avenue East roadway, when constructed over Interstate 75, will have an intersection with Lena Road,” he said.

“However, extending Lena Road is not currently funded.”

ince he became a student at Lakewood Ranch High School two years ago, Noah Candocia has learned to appreciate the ham sandwich he packs every morning for lunch.

He said waiting in line for a cafeteria lunch, along with the hundreds of other sophomores on lunch break, would take him 25 minutes.

“It’s pretty busy in the cafeteria at lunch,” Candocia said. “The hallways are crowded when we’re all walking to classes, too. But I don’t notice how crowded school is when I’m in class. I have about 20-25 other kids in my classes.”

Candocia is one of the 2,290 students who attend the East County high school, which has the largest student population in the county and operates with 581 students more than its capacity.

His mother, Yudit Candocia, hoped the Manatee County School District would ease overcrowding by choosing to locate its new high school in East County.

But Lakewood Ranch High’s population might not be changing too much.

The district is taking steps to build its new high school in Parrish.

trict made an offer on a 50-acre property on Erie Road in Parrish.

The land is adjacent to property the district purchased in 2005.

Officials planned to build an elementary and middle school on that property, but instead hope to utilize both parcels for the 80- to 100-acre expanse that will house a high school, which Greene hopes will open by the 2019-2020 school year.

As of press time Tuesday, the district hadn’t heard whether its offer was accepted.

Greene said the school will help ease congestion at the three high schools currently running at or above capacity: Palmetto, Braden River and Lakewood Ranch.

“We hope those (East County) parents will drive to Parrish,” Greene said. “We haven’t drawn up an attendance zone for that school yet, so it’s too early to say which areas will benefit the most from the school. We will be going through that process later.”

The attendance zone is a geographic area that determines which students are zoned to attend the new high school.

School choice has been a factor in surging enrollment in the eastern portion of the county.

At Braden River High, 122 students travel from Palmetto, Ellenton, Parrish and Myakka to attend the school. Lakewood Ranch High is home to 400 students from those areas.

Braden River High registrar Ellen Meade agrees a Parrish location will take stress off Braden River and Lakewood Ranch high schools, while also better serving students who travel from Myakka and northern areas for school.

“Parrish makes sense,” Meade said. “There are no schools on that north side other than Pal-

Greene said the district considered utilizing the 60 acres of property it owns on Rye Road, but that wasn’t enough space for the school.

Those acres are also located in a flood zone with railroad tracks nearby.

“That piece of property had quite a few challenges,” Greene said. “It just wasn’t a good fit. We weren’t comfortable with choosing that space.”

Parrish could use a high school, but he sees how crowded his school is each day.

“People love this area,” French said. “They want to raise their kids here.”

Aside from Candocia, other parents of Braden River and Lakewood Ranch high school students agreed the county should have chosen Lakewood Ranch as the high school’s new site.

moved from Queens, N.Y., a couple months ago. He has already noticed how packed Lakewood Ranch High is, as he sits in line and waits to pick up his children at the end of the school day.

“We toured the school and I saw all those portables out back.

I knew there had to be a lot of kids here,” Plovenic said. “There are more kids than in New York.”

Clara Dabage has children who attend Lakewood Ranch High and Nolan Middle School, which is running at 219 children over capacity.

Although both schools are crowded and it can take Dabage more than 25 minutes to exit the parking lot when picking them up or bringing them to school,

she wouldn’t consider driving 17 miles to the Parrish site to bring her children to school.

“This is just a crowded area,” Dabage said. “But I still won’t drive to Parrish.”

Although her children are still in elementary school, B.D. Gullett Elementary parent Stephani Lis has been staying informed on the high school crowding situation.

Her children are zoned for Braden River High, and where she lives is at least 30 minutes from Parrish. But if she lived closer to the interstate, she might consider driving to Parrish to avoid packed classrooms.

“Once Fort Hamer Bridge is open, it will be easy to get back and forth to Parrish,” Lis said.

ob, the capybara, is settling into his new bachelor pad at Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary, and he is hoping he won’t be solo for long.

Capybaras are social creatures, so Kay Rosaire, founder of the sanctuary, said she is trying to find him companionship.

Bob came to the sanctuary about eight months ago, when his New York owner decided she needed to give up her pet to a good home.

Rosaire said Bob had a large enclosure with a pool when he first arrived at the sanctuary, but since then, new digs had been

With donated labor from Incredible Creations, a more natural habitat was opened in March.

The rock-like structure gives him something to climb on and a little cave to cool off in.

He doesn’t seem to mind the five rescued pet alligators who live next door. The alligators don’t pay much attention to him, either.

“They’re fed too much to care about him,” Rosaire said.

The rodent is a favorite among the staff now.

Diane Moyer, an animal caretaker at Big Cat, is Bob’s main girl for his favorite snacks, corn on the cob and romaine lettuce.

“We get along really well, and he associates me with the corn,” she said with a laugh.

Rosaire jokingly calls the capybara “Moyer’s son.” Although other caretakers help with Bob, too, Moyer is most familiar with him and knows most of his habits.

For example, she said his morning routine includes a leisurely lap around his pool.

It’s the first time Big Cat has had a resident capybara, so Rosaire needs to find him a friend. In the wild, capybaras travel in groups “We’re looking for a family,” she said.

Until that time, Rosaire is consdering the addition of a goat as a playmate. That, however, would attract the alligators’ attention.

ust two months into his role as vice president of planning for Schroeder-Manatee Ranch in 2014, Richard Bedford did what any good architect would do.

On Dec. 21, he climbed into his white SUV and headed south on Lakewood Ranch Boulevard from University Parkway. He made his way through a series of locked gates until he reached the southern edge of SMR’s property.

He walked down a slight hill toward the water, found a place to sit and stared northward.

“I may or may not have had a cold adult beverage with me,” Bedford said. “I waited for the 5:30 p.m. sunset. I wanted to be able to say, ‘This is what it’s going

The exercise proved valuable for Bedford, whose job it is to envision what should be developed across the lake from where he sat.

It will become the future town center area for SMR’s Waterside development.

Bedford and SMR celebrated the start of the Waterside project, a 5,500-acre mixed-use project in Sarasota County, with a ground breaking ceremony April 12.

The project will include 5,144 residential units surrounding seven large lakes. It also includes 390,000 square feet of commercial space, 90,000 square feet of civic space and hundreds of acres of preserves and wetlands on 5,500 total acres.

If Bedford could have one “bigger than life” dream, it would be to create a waterfall there.

A peninsula-type area on the northern bank of the largest lake will one day be home to what Bedford calls the “town center.” No specific plans have yet been released, but it likely will be commercial with some housing. The same lake also has an eight-acre island that can be used for a variety of recreational activities, although Bedford hasn’t decided on what just yet.

“We could have done anything with it, but we’re going to do a great park,” Bedford said.

Although she has lived in GreyHawk Landing for two weeks, Anu Patel is concerned about the location of her new home.

She said the intersection of Greyhawk Boulevard and State Road 64, which is the main entrance to the community, is dangerous.

“There’s a fast speed limit, 60 mph, and people still drive faster than the limit,” said Patel, who was looking at her daughter, Suhana. “My daughter will be starting kindergarten at Freedom Elementary in the fall, and I know that intersection will be so busy and even more hectic during the morning hours.”

Patel’s concerns should be addressed soon. The Florida Department of Transportation will decide within a few weeks whether to install a traffic signal at the busy intersection.

Officials study crash history, the total number of vehicles per hour that drive through the intersection and the amount of time drivers are delayed at the intersection.

Crash analysis doesn’t include numbers on rear-end crashes.

FDOT researches “angle crashes,” such as someone getting hit from the side. “(Rear-end) accidents are called correctable,” Burch said.

“We’re more interested in T-bone crashes, where someone is trying to get on to 64, they don’t have enough time and someone hits them from the side. We shouldn’t have those kinds of crashes happen.”

To qualify, intersections must have at least 105 vehicles pass through each hour over an eighthour timeframe.

Some delay is expected, but to wait one minute or longer is considered above the average of 40 seconds, Burch added.

Residents contacted Rep. Greg Steube in December about the need for a traffic signal.

Burch said he gets several calls each year from residents who ask for traffic signals near their communities.

“That’s one of the things we’re here for, our No. 1 priority is safety,” Burch said. “Signals aren’t necessarily an improvement to an intersection. They are used to efficiently move traffic. We’re willing to do surveys, because we’re residents who drive through these interchanges, too.”

When Keith Pandeloglou was 11, he learned to build computers and started selling them.

Now, at 34, his passion for being an entrepreneur continues.

Pandeloglou signed a four-year lease April 4 for the only vacant suite on Lakewood Main Street.

The Lakewood Ranch resident plans to launch his business, Cowork LWR, May 1.

His vision for Cowork LWR is similar to a business incubator, giving one- and two-employee companies, startups, freelancers and entrepreneurs somewhere to call home without the profitobliterating costs of renting their own offices. Clients buy a membership, and the level of membership allows different access to amenities and services.

The interior of the space is under construction, but Pandeloglou has its future layout envisioned, a couch and lounge chair area, individual desks for the top-tier renting clients, a main “computer bar” for clients to plug in and hang out, a conference room and a recording studio for podcasting.

“I wanted to build a place I wanted to work,” he said.

Determined not to have the “corner office,” Pandeloglou said he could see himself sitting out at the computer bar, helping out clients with business development, or sitting outside on Main Street with his cocker spaniel, Riley, whom he plans on bringing along.

Pandeloglou owns UTC Venture Group, a business investment company, and Cowork LWR is his first investment.

Another of Pandeloglou’s passions, which he hopes to foster with his clients at Cowork LWR, is making better connections across organizations throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties, such as hosting joint events for both community’s Young Professionals Groups.

“The best thing is when there’s collaboration with other groups,” he said.

ebra Warren has become a student of golf under the tutelage of an unlikely source: her children.

Practicing at the River Club Golf Course driving range, her 12-year-old son, Oliver, stood behind her, offering advice. Her 16-year-old daughter, Sophia, placed the head of a golf club on top of her mother’s head.

Sophia’s goal was to make sure her mom kept her head still during the swing. It is a technique she and her brother learned at the Tim Sheredy Golf Institute at the River Club.

Sophia and Oliver have their own school of golf when it comes to their mom.

“You really know if you understand something when you can teach someone else,” Debra Warren said of her children. “I love the challenge, and I love to learn.”

Debra Warren never envisioned herself as a golfer, but after spending every day on the course with her children either at the driving range or shuffling them back and forth to private lessons and tournaments, she didn’t have a choice.

Golf had become a way of life for her family. When Debra Warren decided to participate with her children during the Mustang Scramble last May, she had a rough idea what she was going to happen.

It offered her an opportunity to spend the day on the course with her children. What began as a simple ‘let’s just see if I can hit the ball’ turned into Debra Warren sinking a 30-foot putt to close out the competition.

“I jumped right in and saved the day,” she said with a laugh. “That was my one contribution to the team, and I remember thinking ‘Wow, this is fun.’”

Sophia and Oliver then began giving their mom pointers on everything from how to hold a club to ball placement; and gradually, Debra Warren has became a player.

It is a game that has taught Debra Warren the value of patience.

“This is the first sport that’s been awkward or challenging for me,” she said. “It takes a lot of focus and self confidence. You have to allow yourself to be bad enough to get good enough.”

lessons or playing nine holes.

Debra’s husband, Brad, doesn’t play golf, but he also supports the kids’ golf activities and occasionally caddies for them.

Additionally, the Warrens use golf as a way to bring their schoolwork to life. A round of golf or a fitness training session at Whatmore Performance Training helps fulfill their physical education requirement.

Sophia and Oliver also incorporate math and physics into their daily routine when they are explaining shot selection, ball speed and velocity to their mother on the course.

“She teaches me biology and I teach her how to putt,” Sophia said.

up their first golf club in November 2012. The First Tee had a home-school program at the time, and the Warrens decided to give the sport a try.

Sophia wasn’t a fan of the game at first. Oliver was the exact opposite.

“I loved it right away even though I wasn’t great right away,” Oliver said. “That’s why I got better. It’s a hard sport, so you always want to get better.”

Eventually Sophia, who ended up trying out for the Nolan Middle School golf team, came around and before long the two siblings had dug a hole in their front yard to practice chipping.

Another thriller in local rivalry series

raden River senior softball player Kally Martin was in position to be the hero.

With fellow senior Linda Ross reminding her to stay calm, Martin came to the plate at a key moment of Braden River’s 7-6 victory over Lakewood Ranch on April 5.

Tied 6-6 in the seventh inning, the Pirates picked up the winning run when Martin, who had been in a four-game hitting slump, blooped a single into the outfield.

It was a shining moment for Martin, who played for Lakewood Ranch the first two years of her varsity softball career.

“We look forward to this game all year,” Martin said of the rivalry game. “It’s just a whole different feeling than any other game. The rivalry is personal to all of us.”

With the prominence of the two programs, the Braden River-Lakewood Ranch softball showdowns have become one of southwest Florida’s most intense rivalries. Many of the players on both teams compete on the same squads during travel ball.

The two teams split this year’s two-game series. Lakewood Ranch handed Braden River its first loss of the season with a 10-6 victory back on March 15 only to see the Pirates get revenge three weeks later.

For the first time in three years, Braden River and Lakewood won’t be meeting in the postseason after landing in different districts, making the April 5 game bittersweet for the two programs’ six seniors, who have spent the past four years building up the rivalry.

“It was sad,” Braden River senior Bethaney Keen said.

“There are a few girls on Lakewood Ranch who I played with on travel ball, and knowing I’m not going to face most of them again is emotional. Everyone, including myself, wanted that game so bad.”

While this season’s contests were strictly about bragging rights, the players didn’t approach the game any differently.

Word began circulating around Twitter in the days leading up to the game as players from both schools encouraged friends and classmates to show their support. It’s that enthusiasm among players and fans that has made Braden River and Lakewood Ranch a must-see rivalry game.

“The game itself is always so loud and fun that it makes it one of the most memorable games of the season,” said Lakewood Ranch catcher Maddie Biggs said.

No. 1 singles player has proven to be the Pirates’ missing link this season.

Ojeda, who only lost one singles and one doubles match during the regular season, won his singles match in straight sets to help propel Braden River to the Class 3A-Region 5 title and a berth in the Class 3A state tournament April 13 through April 15, at Sanlando Park, in Altamonte Springs, for the first time since 2009.

“The addition of David Ojeda was a huge stabilizing factor for the boys,” coach James Straub said. “He is very coachable and plays smart. He set the bar high and hits it.”

He already had clinched a spot in the Class 3A individual singles tournament after winning the Class 3A-District 10 title March 30.

Now Ojeda will have the chance to play alongside his friends with the hopes of pulling out another victory, not only for himself, but for his teammates as well.

“It’s my favorite thing in the whole world,” Sophia said. “I’ve got the passion and the golf bug.

I just love it more than anything.”

Now the two siblings spend their mornings engaged in a variety of early morning competitions with anything from 20 pushups to cleaning the other’s golf clubs on the line. Sophia and Oliver try to compete in at least three mini challenges a week and also hold putting contests in the house.

“It depends on the day or the shot because we are neck and neck,” Sophia said of her and Oliver. “We’ve grown in the sport together, so it’s nice to always have someone to practice with and compete with.”

In addition to coaching their mother, Sophia and Oliver also coach each other. The two practice together every day, so they are constantly watching and analyzing one another’s games and offering tips to better their performance.

Additionally, Sophia and Oliver remain enrolled in the Tim Sheredy Golf Institute, where they train five days a week at the River Club Golf Course.

When they can’t get to the course, mattresses make the perfect target for chipping golf balls while stuffed animals lined against the wall are the next best thing to holes for putting.

“It works like a charm,” Oliver said.

Golf has truly brought the Warren family closer together.

“We’ve got to support our community,” she said about the first My Hometown Fest.

The Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota organized the family-friendly food and craft beer festival as a way to raise money for its causes that include providing speech and language services to children.

Guests enjoyed craft beers, food samples and live music by four bands.

“It’s close. It’s local. It’s a beautiful day outside,” said patron Brandi Wanecski of Lakewood Ranch.

More than 2,000 people turned out for the event.

Organizers Tim Self, Ron Haynes and Jake Hartvigsen expect to hold the festival again next year, and they hope even more local food vendors to show up to feature their own specialized cuisine. For example, one local restaurant at the event offered a Boston clam chowder not normally on its menu.

“Everybody’s from somewhere,” Self said. “They’ve got a special food (that area is) known for.”

Although she is 13, Lily Potter doesn’t like limitations.

So designing items for the Teen Recycled Fashion Show was a challenge fit for the Haile Middle School student.

“If you’re making something out of recycling, it will be interesting,” she said.

The fashion show, organized and hosted by the Manatee County Public Library System, is a competition for teenagers. The challenge is to create an article of clothing from recycled goods, and model it for a panel of judges Saturday, April 16 at the Manatee Central Library.

Popular choices involve plastic grocery bags and newspaper.

During the 2015 competition, one girl made a dress entirely from used Starbucks cups.

The show was a brainchild of Braden River Branch youth librarian Chris Culp. The show is now rounding its third year, and has grown each year since.

The first year, the contest had about 15 participants, all girls.

This year, about 35 girls have signed up for the show.

Culp has a team of other branch staff members helping her with the show, and she has more volunteers to work the event than ever before.

The event’s judges hail from different fields: Arnold Desmarais, a Melbourne artist and jewelry designer; Joe Loccisano, curator and gallery manager for State College of Florida; Georgina Willmott, Manatee Players assistant costume designer; Cheri Coryea, director of neighborhood services for Manatee County; and

new this year, Jackie Einwaechter, community marketing supervisor for Bright House Network in Sarasota.

The show will have live music and Mary Kay representatives will be doing hair and makeup for the models for free.

Culp’s fashion show received a state spotlight this year when the Florida Library Association awarded the show with the Betty Davis Miller Youth Services Award. The entire library system also won Library of the Year from the association.

The judges award first, second and third places to the best entries.

Potter first learned about the contest after seeing a flyer for it a few months ago while checking out a book from the library for a project. As a budding fashion designer, she said she thought it would be cool to make something from recycling. She’s working on an outfit made from plastic bags.

“I liked that I could create something without a (specific) pattern,” she said.

Rotary presents charitable donations The Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch celebrated the culmination of its hard work at the annual Suncoast Food and Wine with a ceremony April 7.

Rotary gave away $58,500 to 18 charities during a luncheon at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. Recipients received grants ranging from $1,500 to $17,000.

“There’s a huge need out there and everyone in this room is here because they’re trying to address those needs,” Rotary Club President Susan Courter said.

At its monthly luncheon April 8, the Palm Aire Women’s Club awarded scholarships to seven students of the State College of Florida and Manatee Technical College. Award amounts ranged from onetime $500 gifts to $1,500 a year for two years.

Those students were Rebeca Castro, James Cox, Virginia Villegas Romero, Claudia Hayes and Sunny Perez.

In conjunction with presenting local students with scholarships for the upcoming school year, a few of the members celebrated warmer temperatures and the spring season by sporting springthemed bonnets at the club’s monthly luncheon.

“It’s just something fun to do,” Garofalo said.

Sitting on his head was a dinosaur — Petri from the film “A Land Before Time” — he fondly calls his “cure-a-dactyl.”

Those who participated want to make diabetes extinct and they were present to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Craft said he always wears his dinosaur hat. “One of these first races we did, the movie had just come out and my daughter, Katie, loved it,” he said.

This year’s JDRF Walk to Cure had a fundraising goal of $183,000, event chairwoman Bev Kennedy said.
