which contributed to the nonprofit’s ability to reopen earlier than expected.

Trisha Calandra, the vice president of the Sarasota Film Society that owns Lakewood Ranch Cinema, said the nonprofit originally planned to reopen in the middle of April, but the money from the fundraiser as well as studios releasing new films allowed for the nonprofit to open March 31.

The theater will only be showing “Godzilla vs. Kong” March 31 and April 1.

On April 2, the theater will add “Tom and Jerry,” “Nomadland,” “Raya and the Lost Dragon,” “Nobody” and “Minari” to its lineup of movies.

“People are much more willing to come to the movie theater to see something they’ve never seen before compared to when we were getting absolutely no releases from Hollywood, and we had to show classic films,” Calandra said.

To keep the doors open, Calandra said the theater will need between $50,000 and $75,000 per month in revenue.

The theater will be at 60% capacity to start.

“We are still trying to stay safe, so the community feels safe coming to the movies,” Calandra said.

“I just want to see smiling faces back in the movie theater. We’ve been closed for almost a total of seven months between the two closures, and just to be able to open again is exciting for us.”

Calandra said reopening also means bringing back 10-12 of the theater’s 40 furloughed employees.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everyone and having that camaraderie again because this is a total family,” Calandra said.

“Everybody who’s worked there has pretty much worked there for 10-plus years.”

Calandra said she hopes that as more people get vaccinated, more people will be more comfortable with going to the theater, and the theater can fully reopen by the summer.

“You feel the camaraderie of the audience as well — it’s an experience when you go to a movie,” Calandra said. “It’s not the same when you watch it in your living room on your 50-inch TV. It’s just not the same. It’s a much more enjoyable experience when you see a movie with other people in the movie theater, and you can kind of enjoy that moment all together.”

Vaccinated residents enjoy new freedoms WHAT’S NEXT?

ill Creek resident Mary Anne McDevitt hasn’t seen her little sister, Geralyn Kersey, in three years.

When the 63-year-old Kersey moved to Port St. Lucie in March 2020, McDevitt, who is six years older, thought they would be seeing each other all the time.

But Kersey has not left her house since the COVID-19 pandemic began spreading. She has a serious heart condition, and contracting COVID-19 could be life-threatening.

McDevitt and Kersey are both fully vaccinated now, and Kersey finally feels safe enough to leave the house. She’s driving west for her great-nephew’s birthday party March 27, a party she couldn’t attend if she wasn’t vaccinated.

“That’s how scared people have been,” McDevitt said. “But I think that’s how much better they feel once they get the shot.”

It is now safe for fully vaccinated adults to visit other fully vaccinated adults or unvaccinated but low-risk individuals from one other household without wearing masks or social distancing, according to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

This guidance has cleared the way for long-awaited occasions, such as Kersey’s visit. Country Club resident Dr. Jennifer Bencie, the Manatee County health officer for the Florida Department of Health, said the newest guidelines are a positive sign.

“It’s a bright light in what has been a very dark year,” Bencie said.

“I’ve worn a mask in my home for the past year. I have elderly parents who have underlying medical conditions. We’re finally at that point where we don’t have to wear masks in the household. That’s a huge relief, personally, and obviously professionally, to be able to see that happening in our community, where people have done everything right. They want to see that it’s paid off.”

effective at preventing moderate to severe cases of COVID-19, but fully vaccinated people can still contract the virus and spread it to others.

There’s another reason it’s especially important to continue wearing masks and social distancing: variants. It’s unclear if any existing COVID-19 variants are more resistant to vaccines, but Bencie said it’s wise to assume “you’re never 100% fully protected.”

The more COVID-19 spreads from person to person, the more chance the virus has to mutate into a strain immune to current vaccines. Bencie said COVID-19 vaccines could become like flu shots, where people will have to get a new one each year to guard against mutations.

Bencie also refuted one rumor about the vaccine. She said it is not possible to test positive for COVID-19 because of the vaccine. She also said the latest research shows herd immunity will be reached when somewhere between 70% and 90% of the U.S. population is vaccinated. It won’t be possible to know exactly what the figure is until far more people are vaccinated.

In the here and now, many who are vaccinated are enjoying a newfound sense of security. Edgewater residents John and Regina Joly went to Naples on March 22 to visit two couples they hadn’t seen since 2019. In fact, 2020 was the first time in 40 years the three couples didn’t gather to see one another at least once. The Jolys said they are excited to eat in a

restaurant with them, something they’ve done by themselves during the pandemic but much less often with friends.

“Everybody’s just dying to have some fun and laugh and get the fear factor off a little bit,” John Joly said. “It’s been strangling.”

Central Park resident Gene Gelpke received his second vaccination March 18. He’s planning to go to Grove for happy hour with some friends April 6. He wanted to wait until at least two weeks after his second dose, which is the amount of time it takes the vaccine to reach full effectiveness.

Gelpke said he loves supporting local restaurants, but he has only eaten takeout over the past year.

He’s excited to enjoy the experience in person again.

Country Club resident Jon Garrick, 70, is fully vaccinated. However, he and his wife, 68-year-old Brenda Fiske, neither of whom have underlying conditions, are remaining selective about where they go. The couple went for a drive along the coast March 19, but they didn’t get out of the car at St. Armands Circle and Lido Beach because of how crowded the area was.

“Do I like wearing a mask?”

Garrick said. “Absolutely not.

Do I like having to keep my distance from friends that I’m used to shaking hands with or hugging or something like that? No, I hate it. But sometimes you have to do things that you don’t enjoy doing.”

Another example is how they will celebrate their birthdays.

Garrick’s is March 31, and Fiske’s is April 1. They usually get together with two friends who also celebrate their birthdays the same time of year, but they won’t be doing so this year. Garrick and Fiske might go out to eat together, but they will select a restaurant that is observing social distancing protocols.

“I would hate to feel that I had spread something to someone else, that they could get really sick or possibly die from it,” Garrick said. “So it’s not just selfishness.

I’m not scared of dying. I fought in two different wars, and I’m not scared of dying. I’m scared of being incapacitated and not being able to get out and do the things I want to do.”

Fully vaccinated people can: n Visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing; n Visit with unvaccinated people who are at low risk for severe COVID-19 disease indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing; and n Refrain from quarantine and testing following a known exposure if asymptomatic.

For now, fully vaccinated people should continue to: n Take precautions in public, such as wearing a mask and physical distancing; n Adhere to other prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people who are at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease or who have an unvaccinated household member who is at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease; n Practice prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people from multiple households; and n Avoid mediumand large-sized inperson gatherings.

terminating former Manatee County Administrator Cheri Coryea on Nov. 19.

FDLE received a request from 12th Judicial Circuit State Attorney Ed Brodsky in December 2020 to assist in reviewing a citizen complaint that included allegations of Sunshine Law violations and “possibly other law violations” by the four commissioners, Burns said via email.

Burns said FDLE agents met with the complainant, who alleged the four commissioners “conspired to reverse a controversial land purchase and to fire the Manatee County Administrator.” FDLE reviewed records provided by the complainant and conducted “several” interviews.

The department determined that no information obtained substantiated any criminal violations.

Vaccine registration opens to those 18 and up in Manatee Manatee County has expanded registration for COVID-19 vaccines to all Florida residents ages 18 and up, according to a news release.

Additionally, the county will begin vaccinating residents 50 and older. The county will wait for a directive from Gov. Ron DeSantis before lowering the age requirement further. The county said it has now contacted every person 65 or older who is registered in the county’s standby pool at least once.

A vehicle was totaled during an accident Nov. 7, 2019, at State Road 70 and Post/Greenbrook boulevards. There were three fatal crashes at the intersection in 2018.

S.R. 70 are scheduled for future roundabouts, not traffic signals.

Aaron Keller, a spokesperson for the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, said the department no longer has the ability to research crash data from specific geographic locations because of the end of a contract with research company LexisNexis.

However, there were three deaths at the intersection in 2018 alone. There were 29 crashes and 17 injuries at the intersection from 2011-2015, according to a study from the Florida Department of Transportation.

Using MSB Services to construct the signal will hasten its installation by almost a year compared with an estimated 12-14 months if the county’s Public Works Department had to design and obtain permitting from FDOT and then ask for and review bids from various companies.

Lakewood Ranch intersection that has been the site of fatal car accidents and traffic jams leaving Premier Sports Campus will soon receive a traffic light ahead of schedule.

The Manatee County Commission unanimously approved an agreement March 23 with Bradenton-based electrical contractors MSB Services to construct a temporary traffic signal where State Road 70 intersects with Post Boulevard and Greenbrook Boulevard. The $299,000 project is scheduled for completion in four months and will be funded by impact fees and gas taxes.

Public Works Strategic Affairs Manager Ogden Clark III said there are multiple reasons Manatee County decided a light was warranted at the intersection at a sooner date. Post Boulevard is used as an entrance to Premier Sports Campus, and a signal will help prevent traffic backup caused by large events.

Increased development in the area has put stress on the intersection. The intersection with Post and Greenbrook boulevards was specifically chosen because intersections further east on

The county often uses MSB Services for projects it wants to complete quickly through an expedited process known as a “design build,” Clark said. When a project costs less than $300,000, the county can pass it onto a contractor under the stipulation MSB Services, in this case, designs and builds everything itself.

Eventually, the temporary signal will be replaced by a permanent one as part of a $39.5 million project to widen S.R. 70 from Lorraine Road to County Road 675, scheduled to begin in summer 2023. FDOT spokesperson Brian Rick said construction will take two years or a little more, which means that 2025 is targeted for completion.

The cost of the total project isn’t broken down by intersection. However, Rick said permanent signals typically cost $500,000 to $1 million to build and install, depending on such factors as the number of lanes, the size and number of mast arms, the number of signals and the intersection improvements.

Roundabouts are planned for three intersections east of Post and Greenbrook boulevards.

However, a roundabout isn’t feasible where S.R. 70 meets Post and Greenbrook boulevards because S.R. 70 will be widened to six lanes through the intersection and eastward.

azmin Russell held a bowl filled with food for horses and inched toward Gallagher, a horse resting in his stable at Sarasota Manatee Association for Riding Therapy.

Russell, who was on a field trip to SMART with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County on March 18, had never been around a horse and was nervous to feed one for the first time.

She gripped the bowl as best she could as Gallagher ate.

“I was kind of nervous first seeing the horses, but it was fun,” Russell said. “It was a little weird at first [feeding Gallagher] because he almost took the bowl out of my hands.”

“My whole goal is bringing the community out here to SMART and letting people know we’re here and how we can give back as well,” said Rebecca Blitz, the executive director of SMART. “A lot of people didn’t know we existed, even though we’ve been here since 1987. I knew there were so many opportunities for us to work more in the community to begin new programs.”

The pandemic left SMART in need of funds as the nonprofit was forced to close its programs and cancel its biggest fundraiser of the year.

Now as more people get vaccinated and feel more comfortable venturing out, Blitz said starting these new programs was perfect timing.

The new programs include one geared toward cancer survivors (Reins of Hope) and another for first responders (which has yet to be named).

The programs will not only benefit the participants but also generate funds for SMART. “Our volunteers are coming back, and we’re starting to create awareness,” Blitz said. “A lot of those programs create awareness in the community. It’s a win-win.”

ith a recording of Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog,” entertaining a crowd of about 300 people at Herrmann’s Royal Lipizzan Stallions

in Myakka City, Rebecca McCullough grabbed her clipboard of notes and walked into the arena to start a show March 19.

She looked around a bit, took a deep breath and said, to no one in particular, “It’s showtime.”

The walk in itself is odd for McCullough, who always did her entertaining from the back of a horse. Things are different now following the death of her mother, beloved Myakka City resident Gabby Herrmann, on March 13. It was Herrmann who would handle the speaking part of the show, educating the crowd on the magnificent horses and their talents.

As Herrmann’s only child, that task has been passed to McCullough, who admitted that when she was a teenager, she wanted no part of the family business.

“I was very shy,” she said. “I didn’t like being in front of people.”

Herrmann never pushed her, perhaps knowing she would come back some day.

It was only after a divorce at age 30 and a return to the ranch that McCullough discovered that Herrmann blood surges through her veins when it comes to horses.

“You don’t teach somebody to ride,” she said. “I was born to ride.”

McCullough said people don’t need to wonder if Herrmann’s Royal Lipizzan Stallions will continue to survive after Herrmann died at the age of 66. It will.

“I feel like I am being thrown into it because I thought this would skip me and go right to my daughter,” McCullough said. “My daughter’s 12, and she is a natural.

“But we have no intention of stopping or shutting down.”

Although Herrmann had struggled with congestion the past

few months that she thought was brought about by allergies, heart failure caused her death at a time her friends and family thought she was doing well. She announced the Myakka City Historic School House fundraiser on March 7 from a chair and didn’t ride as she normally does, but everyone thought it was a temporary setback.

Myakka City’s Marilyn Coker, who is a driving force behind the school’s restoration, said Herrmann told her she had allergies.

“The whole area is just in shock,” Coker said. “I went to the barn, and volunteers were helping

to muck stalls.”

Coker said Herrmann had a big job training the horses and running the ranch, but she never complained.

“My mother truly loved what she did,” McCullough said. “It was a family tradition, and she loved being in front of people and speaking afterward. She would talk to them about whatever they wanted.

“Then every night, she would be in the barn, giving horses a car-

rot. She always was in that barn.

She loved being there.”

McCullough is also in the barn each night, but there are other duties she now inherits. She remembers a few years ago when one of their horses got loose in a small town in Colorado while they were on the road for a show.

“I get this call, ‘There is a white horse running through town,’” she said. “My mother was going up and down the streets of that town in her pajamas with a flashlight. She found our horse, though. She was compassionate.

Her horses were like family, and they could feel that.”

Herrmann would sit back and watch her horses for hours, seeing how intelligent they were and how compassionate they could be.

Those horses are now watching for Herrmann to show up at the barn.

“Horses always have a sentinel who watches for her,” McCullough said. “They are grieving. One of them stopped eating for a couple of days but has started again.

“It’s tough. As in any farm family, you see that person every day.”

Herrmann was family to many of the Myakka City residents, who have rushed to help, such as with working in the barn or watering plants.

“We’ve had people coming to help,” McCullough said. “We’re country. Everyone wants to feed us.”

Myakka City’s Bonnie Carlton, a volunteer at the ranch for 12 years, said Herrmann was tough as they come.

“About seven years ago, they were in a procession in the ring, side by side, and all of a sudden, all I see is horses’ teeth flashing,” Carlton said. “One horse tried to bite the other and missed and bit Gabby. I didn’t know until the show was over and she said, ‘I got bit.’ You never would have known.

It bit her on the leg, but she did her work. I saw it the next day — it was a nasty bite.”

Herrmann was also shy, her daughter said, until her father, Ottomar, died in 2004, and she had to take over the show.

McCullough is now in the same place. She said the fans need to have some patience with her.

With the show almost over, “Save the Last Dance for Me,” played over the loudspeakers.

McCullough worked her way through the show, then greeted any fan who wanted to talk afterward.

Her mother would have been proud.

Vaccine experience serves dose of reality S itting in my car at Tom Bennett Park, waiting for my first COVID-19 vaccination March 19, a lot was running through my mind.

I have never liked putting anything into my body in terms of medicines or vitamins, though I must confess I do eat Tums by the barrel.

The hesitance to take medicine might be odd for someone who drinks beer, eats pizza for breakfast, loves filet mignon and adds gobs of butter to, well, everything. I guess I’ve always been afraid that if I start taking acetaminophen for my aches and pains, I will want another pill, then another, then another. Call it a mild case of reefer madness.

I’m not saying I never take a pill, but it’s kind of a last resort.

It’s just the way I roll.

So I understood why I was squirming a bit in my car as I waited to get a substance shot into me that was rushed into production and has limited research completed on how it affects people.

The Center for Disease Control reports 126 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered in the U.S. from Dec. 14, 2020, through March 22, 2021. During that time there were 2,216 reports of death among people who received a COVID-19 vaccine, though the CDC review says no deaths could be connected to the vaccine.

Those who get the COVID-19 vaccine could experience side effects including chills, fever, muscle pain and headaches.

For some reason, that doesn’t make me feel more comfortable.

Being a reporter, I question just about everything, so I do wonder if there will be any longterm effect from the vaccine that just hasn’t turned up yet. It’s not like I can get the vaccine out of me once it’s in.

I probably would have waited longer to get the vaccine, but I had a couple reasons pushing me to be waiting in the line that day at Tom Bennett Park. One was the birth of my first grandson, Logan James Heater, in February. Because of the pandemic, I didn’t travel to California to be at Logan’s birth, and I want to

visit as soon as I can. I feel I owe it to my grandchild to be as safe as possible.

The other reason is simply the desire to travel, and I know it’s going to be easier if I have my vaccination card punched.

Waiting in the car, I had time to kill, so I ran a search for COVID-19 vaccine side effects.

The CDC offered these: Tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever, nausea.

Sounds a little like what you have when you contract COVID-19.

It made me feel a bit more comfortable that Manatee County has the vaccination

system figured out. Every time someone approached my car, they were smiling and polite.

They obviously are trying to put everyone at ease.

I crept closer to the guy who was delivering the shots. Stick and move. Stick and move.

It was too late to back out, so up to the needle I went, and in a flash the deed was done.

I had another 15 minutes to wait at the site to make sure I didn’t have an allergic reaction.

A day later, I felt pretty good about the entire process. Sure, my upper arm felt like one of my buddies punched me 10 times in the same spot, but that was no big deal. All those other side effects hadn’t come to fruition.

Yet. Another day later, and I had them all, except for the nausea.

Going to bed Sunday night, every inch of my skin felt like I had been plunged into a vat of crushed ice. I layered up the blankets like I was sleeping in a tent, in December, in Buffalo.

You know how that ends up. I woke up like I was sleeping in the Manatee River. Soaked.

Why that always occurs at 3 a.m., I don’t know. I do know that changing the sheets at that time is no fun. Why do they call them fitted sheets anyway? They certainly don’t seem to fit well in the middle of the night.

The muscle pain, tiredness, dizziness and headache weren’t

any fun either.

So more from the CDC: “You may feel soreness or experience some swelling in your arm. You may also feel tired, have a headache, fever or chills.

These symptoms do not mean you have COVID-19 — it’s not possible to get COVID-19 from the vaccine. The side effects are normal signs that your body is building protection.”

I guess my body has built up some mighty protection.

It all leads me to wonder how the 18- to 60-year-olds will respond when it comes time to get their vaccinations. In speaking to some of my neighbors and friends of varying ages, many of them say they are reluctant to get a shot that might make them as sick as if they actually contracted the disease. Others simply wanted to wait for more feedback from those who had received the vaccinations.

Building this herd immunity might take a lot longer than you expect.

Every Wednesday at 4 p.m., Panther Ridge’s Stacey Clevenger starts her volunteer shift at the Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch.

She works with Lakewood

Ranch’s Liz Lynne and Cindy Jackson to take care of all the dogs at the nonprofit at the time.

The group has been volunteering together for the past seven years and have become close.

They even spend time together outside of their shift duties.

“We celebrate birthdays and

Christmas together,” Jackson said. “We show up for each other.”

Jackson, who is also a Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch board member, said the volunteers become family and are crucial to the nonprofit’s ability to function.

Although the humane society started welcoming back volunteers last summer, Jackson said not everyone has returned.

Jackson said there are about 100 volunteers to cover 120 volunteer shifts each week that need to be filled with three to four volunteers each. Volunteers are given shifts to help care for the dogs, cats, run the front desk, manage adoptions and more.

Jackson and Cheryl Johnson, the volunteer coordinator, hope that as more people get vaccinated, more people will want to volunteer.

Jackson said about six people started volunteering again once they were vaccinated.

Clevenger was disappointed when the humane society had to limit volunteers to only board members last March, and she couldn’t volunteer anymore, but she was ready to go when she was called to return.

“I was happy to start right back up where we left off,” Clevenger said.

Johnson said the pandemic has given her an opportunity to spend time training volunteers one on one, which can sometimes work better than training a large group because she can spend more time with each person.

Although Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue has depended on hundreds of volunteers to function, the nonprofit is depending on its six staff members to carry out duties and handle responsibilities while Nate’s isn’t allowing volunteers back due to the pandemic and ongoing construction at its facilities on Lorraine Road.

“Between COVID-19 and construction, it’s just a mess,” said Rob Oglesby, the development director for Nate’s. “I know our volunteers are all missing being here. It’s just like a big family.”

Before the pandemic began, Oglesby said 98% of Nate’s workforce was made up of volunteers, so when the nonprofit had to transition to staff only, it caused some challenges.

The staff is now responsible for taking care of the kitchen and laundry, walking the dogs, caring for puppies and kittens, socializing the cats and dogs and more.

Construction is expected to be completed in September, at which point Oglesby hopes volunteers can return.

Studies estimate that vein disease (i.e., varicose veins) affects more than 40 million Americans, and only one-half of one percent seek treatment.

About 40 percent of women and 20 percent of men have some vein issue by age 50.

One of the reasons for not seeking treatment is the myth that vein disease is “just” unsightly, bulging veins, or there is no treatment outside of major surgery with a long, painful recovery.

However, nothing could be further from the truth! Medical technology has come a long way, and advancements in vein treatment are no exception.

The first line of treatment for vein disease usually involves lifestyle changes such as weight loss and exercise or leg elevation at night and wearing compression stockings. These conservative measures provide temporary relief, but do not provide long-term solutions.

New treatments are minimally invasive and have proven to be effective, safe and very low risk.

The goal of advancements in vein treatment is to stop the underlying disease process and to alleviate the symptoms and physical findings associated with it. Vein disease progresses at a rate of 4% per year and does not improve without proper treatment…ever.

Establishing the correct diagnosis as to which specific veins are responsible for the “reflux” (backwards blood flow in the veins due to non-functioning valves) is very important and can be determined with a venous ultrasound of the legs. Treatment can then be precisely directed to the veins which are not properly functioning.

A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE & ADVANCEMENTS Since the early 1900s, vein stripping used to be the only option. It required surgery, general anesthesia, large incisions, hospitalizations, a long recovery, and more. Thankfully, vein stripping is rarely, if ever, performed in the U.S. today.

Modern day treatments for venous insufficiency began about 20 years ago when endovenous (inside the vein) therapy was developed to close off the vessel to prevent backward blood flow through the vein. New treatments are minimally invasive and have proven to be effective, safe, and very low risk.

The Venice resident has owned Wish Boutique for seven years, and it was simply called Wish when she bought it. At the time, Nicolson said restaurants and a couple service businesses blended with a wide variety of retails stores including Chico’s and Soma and White Rose.

“It was attractive to women to come and shop on the street,” Nicolson said. “They had multiple stores that they could go to, and they could sort of make an afternoon of it. That’s what initially attracted me to Lakewood Ranch Main Street. And over the time that I was here, I saw that change.”

Nicolson will move to University Town Center on May 1. Her new store will be located at 257 N. Cattlemen Drive next to Rusty Bucket Restaurant & Tavern.

Nicolson said moving her store to UTC will allow her to expand her customer base.

She worked with Benderson

Development Company Principal Evan Benderson while planning her move and came away impressed. She said Benderson has a long-term strategy to make the area more attractive for shoppers, including bringing more entertainment options and amenities to the area.

“I really liked what they were doing there along Cattlemen, where they’re building more of a pedestrian-type of area, as opposed to going into a big box store shopping center or having to go inside of the mall,” Nicolson said. “I think people like more pedestrian areas. I believe that area could become a little bit more like St. Armands. You’ve got a little bit more of a nighttime crowd, and you’ve got expanded hours of things that appeal to different customers and people.”

However, Nicolson still has one hurdle to clear. Although she has already reached an agreement with Benderson, her new location has been stuck in the Sarasota County permitting process since January as the county continues to evaluate her plans and ensure they match county standards.

She was told to expect final approval imminently, though she has already been told that once before. Once she receives approval, she will be allowed to decorate the new store’s interior, place a sign on the outside of the building and so forth.

Nicolson is grateful Lakewood Ranch has given her three extensions on her current lease, so Wish Boutique can stay through April 30. If all goes smoothly with permitting, which is a substantial if, Nicolson wants to open her UTC store the next day, May 1.

hen Lakewood Ranch’s Bob Smith calls you to donate to the Stillpoint Mission in Bradenton, he isn’t offering a chance to win a Mercedes, an elegant dinner or a day trip on a yacht.

Smith just wants your money.

“Feeding people has to be the most fundamental thing to do,” Smith said.

In today’s world of inventive fundraisers, Smith admits he thought it was somewhat crazy when he first started asking his friends for donations in 2012. He expected some of his six golfing buddies to be rather offended.

They weren’t. The first year, he had $1,500, and it snowballed from there. Going into this, the effort’s 10th year, Smith has overall collected $131,833. Last year’s total was a record $32,705 from another record 83 donors.

Smith knows the challenge this year with many of his donors being effected by the pandemic. Still, he says he is chasing $32,706.

He wants his donors to know how important the donations are to the poor who use Stillpoint

The mission gets no government or corporate support and no help from the Patterson Foundation.

‘We are feeding people who can’t speak English,” Smith said.

“They have no job. What do I see when I go there? The poorest of the poor. Haitian refugees.”

He noted the mission needs more help than ever. The mission served an all-time high of 28,250 families last year. Besides giving away food, diapers and essentials, the mission’s cinder block building needs major capital improvements, such as a new roof, flooring and replacement of exterior doors. The mission has no paid staff, and it’s a 501(c)3 nonprofit, so donations are tax deductible.

“We’ve been lucky we’ve been able to survive,” Tischer said.

Tischer does reason that some residents might not have gone out to restaurants the past year like they normally would, so perhaps they have a few more dollars to give to the poor. He said Smith acts as the mission’s advocate, cheerleader and booster.

“We don’t have any professional funding effort,” Tischer said.

Tischer, 77, said the mission passes out everything it gets, and now with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is doing it through windows because the mission is too small to open to the public with safety protocols in place. The mission has had to shut down the clothing part of the effort, though on St. Patrick’s Day it had a special “shopping” day for clothes in the mission parking lot.

He noted that the mission is the only place in the area where people in need can get a week’s worth of diapers.

Tischer wanted to mention Meals on Wheels Plus Manatee, the Food Bank of Manatee County and Lakewood Ranch grant writer Karen Allen as being godsends during a difficult time.

Stillpoint has had a hard time using its 80 volunteers with the new streamlined system through the windows. Smith is a 72-yearold diabetic, so he hasn’t been able to volunteer as he has in previous years.

“We are blessed with more volunteers than we can use,” Tischer said. “We have volunteers wanting to come back.”

Schneider instead represented Daisy with shades of green, purple and orange.

She said her client’s daughter is an artist, so the client loved the unconventional colors.

Daisy is just one example of the dozens of pet portraits Schneider, 56, has created over the past 15 months. Schneider is an art teacher at Fruitville Elementary School, which she called the “best job.” She loves sharing her passion for art with her students but said it can be difficult to find time for her own projects. However, the COVID-19 pandemic gave her more time to do so.

Schneider stumbled into the idea of pet portraits when her daughter, Melissa Sebring, adopted an Italian mastiff named Ginny from Detroit Dog Rescue in December 2019. Schneider usually gives her adult daughter gift cards or something similar at Christmas, but she decided to do something different to commemorate the new addition to Sebring’s family. She painted a portrait of Ginny.

After the gift was revealed to her daughter, Schneider posted the painting to Facebook. Suddenly, she began receiving messages and texts from other people who wanted portraits of their pets.

Schneider said her paintings started gaining popularity around the time the COVID-19 pandemic started. Once school started again, she stopped painting for a while. That changed in December.

“I missed looking forward to, in the evening, adding a layer of paint,” Schneider said. “Or on the weekend, adding a couple layers.”

Schneider generally completes each painting in about one to three weeks, depending on the

“Maybe it’s only a half-hour,” Schneider said. “Then I’ll walk away and come back to it again. So it’s just kind of a constant work in progress.”

Schneider said one of her biggest challenges is painting dogs that aren’t necessarily pretty in the traditional sense. When this happens, Schneider gets creative.

She might highlight a black cocker spaniel with shades of turquoise and light blue. Or she might try to add some personality by focusing on the dog’s eyes and face.

“Sometimes, when their

tongues are out, they have a little more personality,” Schneider said. “Between the personality in the eyes and the smile and the colors, it just seems to come together.”

Schneider said her style varies from painting to painting, but she does follow a loose process.

It starts by painting the eyes as

realistically as she can. Then, she typically adds some fun color to the animal’s fur.

“It’s just really evolving,” Schneider said. “I find from where I started to how I’m painting now, I learn something from each portrait. And I just keep working on it.”

hakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” has been performed for centuries. The play has been adapted and adopted to death. Over the years, a set of conventional cliches has congealed around it. Those cliches make it all too easy — on both sides of the stage.

I’ve read your adaptation of “Julius Caesar” — and I’ve never read anything like it.

There’s only one Cassius in Shakespeare’s original text — Caius Cassius. You carved him into two characters. But they’re two different people, not two sides of the same person.

Correct. I’ve split him into two characters: Tertia Cassius and Caius Cassius. Where they might have a soliloquy in the original, in this version they’re two people who argue with each other.

But that argument draws from Shakespeare’s text, where Cassius was originally one character. The fragmentation was already there.

Yes, although I’d call it “complication” rather than “fragmentation.” And it’s not my invention.

Shakespeare’s major characters always have multiple, often contradictory views. Their minds are often divided.

I get it. Anthony’s mind is divided. In your adaptation, you express that as two debating Anthonys. One believes in Brutus’ honor; the other doesn’t. You changed the argument’s form. But it was already there in the play.

It’s really the key argument of the play.

There is always a conspiracy.

Think again.

Assassination is always bad?

Right. It’s hardly ever mentioned — but ancient Romans didn’t regard political assassination as unethical. Not at all. If it was politically justified, it wasn’t even illegal.

So Brutus did his duty?

Maybe.

that’s the only question. We want to mourn Caesar. But we know she behaved badly. What do we do? The choice they ultimately made was horrific.

Civil war.

Civil war. It’s the worst possible outcome.

Who’s to blame?

Nobody, everybody. The characters all do their best — but Rome still goes to hell. That’s why it’s a tragedy.

And how would you define it?

That’s the real puzzle. The answer is fairly obvious — but not to contemporary eyes.

Give me a hint?

What’s the basic modern assumption concerning assassinations?

Oh, yes. I think he did.

You’re not arguing for political assassination, are you?

No. But I think Shakespeare was.

But that’s really not the central question of “Julius Caesar.” The assassins succeeded. Caesar is dead. It’s no longer a question.

For example?

Well, Cassius, as I mentioned.

But Anthony’s speech at Caesar’s funeral is the classic example. He says: “When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept. Ambition should be made of sterner stuff. Yet Brutus says he was ambitious. And Brutus is an honorable man.” It’s fine rhetoric, but what’s Anthony driving at?

But why did it all go to hell?

Somehow, in the grief, shock and energy of the moment, Anthony (or the Anthonys) provoked the crowd into this highly destructive action. Their speech could’ve healed matters and settled the crowd down. But they stuck the knife in and poured salt in the wound. The result was the fulfillment of the prophecy of blood in the nation’s capitol.

That’s oddly timely.

Yes, it is.

So what’s the question?

What do we do now?

The Cliff Notes interpretation is sarcasm. “Brutus is an honorable man.” In other words, “Brutus is an honorable man. Yeah, right.”

Anthony is riling up the crowd.

That’s the conventional assumption. But look at Anthony’s speech from a different perspective. Think of it as authentic dialectic, not mockery. What if it wasn’t rhetorical trickery?

If Anthony were sincere, how would that change the meaning?

he Certified Collectibles Group has expanded its Lakewood Ranch headquarters to 82,000 square feet through the purchase of a 21,000-square-foot facility.

CCG provides expert, impartial and tech-enabled services that add value and liquidity to collectibles, according to a news release.

The company has been hiring at a rapid pace as it experiences tremendous growth in demand for its services amid a booming collectibles market, the statement says. CCG now employs more than 400 people globally, with 330 in Sarasota.

Susan Goldstein of MSC Commercial, the commercial division of Michael Saunders & Co., represented Lake Jackson Venture LTD in the sale of the building at 6802 Energy Court, according to a separate statement. CCG, through a private trust held in the name LRLVII LLC, paid $4.73 million for the building. Ian Back of IBRE represented the buyers, the release adds.

“This is a strong purchase price for commercial real estate and a clear indication that more businesses are looking to Lakewood

Ranch and our region as an attractive location for their headquarters,” Goldstein said in the statement. “20,000 +/- SF building for an owner/user is uncommon in this market but something to watch as demand increases.”

The new building will allow CCG to continue to grow its team and operations, company officials said. CCG is currently hiring for nearly all positions, including entry-level, specialist and management positions. New employees who start by June 30 are eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus.

In addition to hiring, CCG is expanding its production through multimillion-dollar investments in technology, such as artificial intelligence, robotics and advanced software.

“CCG is laser-focused on providing best-in-class services to our customers as demand for our expertise increases,” CCG CEO Steven Eichenbaum said in a statement. “This new building reflects our continued commitment to our customers and the collectibles markets.”

Like the original CCG facility, the new location will be outfitted with hundreds of security cameras, access control and walkin vaults where collectibles are stored when not in process. It’s located about 1 mile from CCG’s original facility in Lakewood Ranch in Sarasota County.

n 2019, the Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota’s My Hometown Fest drew more than 3,000 people to Nathan Benderson Park.

Last year, the Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota, which provides speech and language services to children, had to cancel the event due to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now the nonprofit is hosting a smaller version of My Hometown Fest called My Hometown Jam. People will be able to see six bands perform at My Hometown Jam from 6-10 p.m. March 26 at Nathan Benderson Park.

The bands include Tim Reynolds of Dave Matthews Band and TR3, The Derek Lersch Band, Michael J. Weiss Trio and Marcel.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to get out and enjoy friends and enjoy a nice evening of music,” said Tim Self, the treasurer of Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota.

“There hasn’t been many opportunities to safely get out and have a nice evening outdoors.”

The event will be limited to 250 general admission tickets to allow for social distancing. The 50 VIP tickets have already sold out.

My Hometown Fest started in 2016 when the Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota was looking to get younger people involved in its organization, so members thought of hosting a craft beer festival. With guidance from John Saputo at Gold Coast Eagle Distributing, the nonprofit started a food and beer festival, which became My Hometown Fest.

“The idea was every hometown has some kind of food they’re famous for, whether it’s Cajun food in New Orleans or crab cakes in Maryland or barbecue in Tennessee,” Self said. “Whatever the case might be, there’s some food that your hometown is known for.

There’s also some type of beer, for the most part, that your hometown is known for.”

Self said the nonprofit has wanted to make My Hometown Fest into a two-day event by adding a night of music the day before My Hometown Fest for years, and now the pandemic provides the opportunity to make the music night a reality.

After having to cancel last year’s My Hometown Fest, which raised about $35,000, Self said the My Hometown Jam is a crucial fundraiser.

“When we don’t raise money, we can’t see as many kids because we provide our speech and language services regardless of the family’s ability to pay,” Self said.

“If somebody can’t pay anything, they don’t pay anything.”

arby Parker Area Leader Tyler Carbol had a tough task March 20, when the store opened for the first time at the Mall at University Town Center.

He had to tell people they couldn’t come into the store.

Due to the pandemic, the store had a maximum occupancy of 18, so people had to wait patiently outside for customers to leave.

The customers wanted to check out the new stores’ collection of eyewear.

Carbol said the store was Warby Parker’s 12th in Florida and the third in the region. Warby Parker has two stores in Tampa.

Besides eyewear, the store offers comprehensive eye exams and now offers daily contact lenses.

Warby Parker gave out “keys, wallet and sunglasses” pouches during the grand opening.

Besides limited capacity, other safety protocols the store is currently following include one-onone guided shopping, contactless checkout and enhanced sanitation.

The store will also carry copies of “The Alphabet of Art at Warby Parker,” Warby Parker’s newly launched retrospective book about the more than 100 artists the brand has collaborated with around the world.

ithout the proven stars of its 2020 team, this year’s Lakewood Ranch High softball team was expected to drop a game or two on the way to the postseason.

Such is the nature of inexperience players, no matter how talented they are. But how the Mustangs lost their first game might prove to be a harbinger of things to come.

Lakewood Ranch (11-1) suffered its first loss of the season March 12, a 2-1 home defeat to Doral Academy (6-1). Coming into the season, Mustangs Head Coach T.J. Goelz said the biggest question for the team was its pitching staff, but the loss couldn’t be blamed on a poor pitching effort.

Sophomore pitcher Olivia Laney threw a complete game, and only one of Doral’s two runs was earned. The problem that tripped up the Mustangs was a familiar one — an inability to manufacture runs.

Two seasons ago, Lakewood Ranch went undefeated in the regular season but lost 3-0 in the state championship game to Winter Springs High. The year before that, the Mustangs lost 1-0 to Oakleaf High in the Final Four.

This time, the team’s first home loss in four years, the Mustangs could only manage one run.

Goelz said his inexperienced Mustangs haven’t seen a pitcher with the velocity and movement of Doral Academy junior Alyssa Zabala, who holds a 0.47 ERA. “That was always going to be a ‘learn on the fly’ situation,” Goelz said. “All year we have done a good job of not swinging at balls outside the zone. We got outside of ourselves a bit in that game. We

made a few more mistakes than they did. But it’s better to have that happen now, so we can learn from it, than for it to happen in districts or regionals.”

Goelz said he is not worried about his offense. The Mustangs are averaging 10.8 runs per game, and they don’t have any weak

spots in the lineup. They’ve had different hitting stars in each game this season. Goelz said his hitters will be better prepared for a top pitcher next time they see one.

He also said that Laney, who transferred to Lakewood Ranch from the Community School of Naples, has exceeded expectations on the mound. Although Laney isn’t a big strikeout pitcher, she has set up hitters, goading them into swinging at pitches they don’t like.

Laney holds a 0.69 ERA and has become the team’s No. 1 pitcher.

Despite the loss to Doral Academy, the Mustangs remain high in the national rankings. As of March 20, MaxPreps has the team third in the country while USA Today and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association still have the Mustangs at No. 1.

“People always want to knock off the No. 1 team in the country,” Goelz said. “Every time we play, it’s the biggest game of the year for the other team. You can either be fearful of that or you can embrace it. We love it. It makes us better.”

Thunder take opponents by storm P

eople who complain that baseball is too slow have never watched The Outof-Door Academy play.

Or at least they haven’t seen this year’s ODA team. The Thunder is in its first season under Head Coach Mike Matthews, who was previously an assistant under former Coach Tim Orlosky. Matthews has the Thunder’s offense in full swing.

Through March 19, ODA was 10-1 and averaging 9.6 runs scored per game. The Thunder has scored double-digit runs in six of its 11 games. ODA’s only loss was a 3-2 defeat to Braden River High in extra innings (eight) on March 9. Braden River is 10-1 and a much bigger school (Class 6A) than ODA (Class 2A).

I saw the power of ODA’s lineup in the team’s 16-3 win March 17 against the Community School of Naples. It was not just the amount of solid contact but also the team’s approach that impressed me. ODA is aggressive. Thunder batters see a pitch they like, and they take massive cuts with no hesitation.

Senior third baseman Tanner Fairchild, a lefty hitter, turned on a pitch with the quickness of David Ortiz, sending a home run over the right field fence. I knew it was gone as soon as I heard the explosive ping sound as the ball left Fairchild’s bat.

prolific clip. That’s part of the strategy, Matthews said. ODA plays its best when going at full speed.

“They need to have that approach day in and day out,” Matthews said.

The players are buying what Matthews is selling.

“In the past, we’ve been solid defensively,” junior outfielder Logan Tribble said. “We’ve kept the runs against us to a

minimum, but we’ve lacked on offense. This year we’ve racked up the hits. That’s going to be the thing that gets us over the top.”

Tribble said the Thunder players have been attacking fastballs early in the count. It’s made a world of difference, Tribble said.

ODA still has the pitching. The Thunder has two NCAA DI commits on the mound in sophomore right-hander Luke Geske, who is committed to the University

of Miami, and junior left-hander Josh Cone, who is committed to Stetson University. As dominant as the bats have been, ODA’s pitching staff has matched them, averaging just 1.4 runs allowed per game.

Matthews said he could not have hand-picked a better start to his first season at the helm.

That’s a credit to his players and his coaching staff, he said.

A humble response, but clearly,

something is different at ODA than in years past, and I doubt it being Matthews’ first season is a coincidence.

I especially love high school baseball games where teams refuse to play timid. Why bunt with a runner on second when you can smash a double? To that end, watching ODA has been some of the most fun I’ve had watching baseball in a long time.

I’d keep my eye on them if I was a local fan. In the 2018-19 season — the last full season ODA got to play — the Thunder reached the regional finals before losing 6-5 to Canterbury High in extra innings. I think this year’s team can go further.

s Lakewood Ranch’s Francesca Tulski walked around the Jiggs Landing Fish Camp cabin, she noticed a small Coca-Cola container.

“I remember one of these,” Tulski said referencing the CocaCola container. “We would bring them to the beach every Sunday in Connecticut.”

Tulski and her friend Suzanne MacDonald, of Lakewood Ranch, toured the Jiggs Landing Fish Camp cabin March 20 during Jiggs Landing Open House as part of Manatee Heritage Days.

The cabin is a replica of cabins built by Jiggs Metcalf in the 1940s.

“I’m interested in off-the-

beaten track spots and history,” Tulski said. “I had heard about events here before, and I had not made it out.”

Denise Kleiner, the operator of Jiggs Landing, shared the history of the historic fishing village and information about some of the furniture, appliances and other items in the replica cabin.

When people are done with the tour, they can order special items on the menu that are available until March 31 for East County’s Heritage Days. Jiggs Landing Outpost will have sour orange pie, swamp cabbage and smoked mullet dip.

Many of the furniture and items in the replica cabin are donations from people in the community.

Wacky walkathon B

.D. Gullett Elementary School’s walkathon was filled with bubbles, blow-up arches, slime and a pig.

After students participated in the school’s annual walkathon March 5, students who raised at least $125 had the opportunity to slime Principal Todd Richardson.

But that wasn’t all.

As an incentive for students to keep raising money, Richardson promised he would dress as a leprechaun and rollerblade around the school if the school raised $20,000.

Then Richardson upped the ante by agreeing to kiss a pig if the school raised $30,000.

The school raised a total of $69,690 for the walkathon, which made it the most successful fundraiser in Gullett Elementary history.

New diagnostic system comes to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center

The HeartFlow Analysis system, a noninvasive technology that helps physicians diagnose coronary artery disease, has come to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center and Manatee Memorial Hospital, members of the Manatee Healthcare System.

Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S. Studies have shown a need to improve how coronary artery disease, which happens when arteries leading to the heart become blocked and cause a reduction in blow flow, is evaluated and diagnosed, according to a Lakewood Ranch Medical

Women’s club drive helps children The result of the “Snack-nado” fundraising drive by the Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club is impressive.

Money and grocery gift cards were collected by the Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club, which raised more than $5,700 for the Children’s Guardian Fund.

The Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club Secretary Ann Sledz and the Children’s Guardian Fund’s Svetlana Ivashchenko and Kristin Poolman sit among the donations.

The donations included vinyl bags overflowing with kidfriendly snacks, towels, blankets, quilts, pillowcases, games, teddy bears and children’s themed bath items. A check for $2,240 accompanied the donations.

The donations were sorted March 16 and then delivered.

Lakewood Ranch’s Garrett Onstad gives a third of his allowance to charity.

11-year-old puts money where heart is Lakewood Ranch’s Monaca Onstad, the director of community relations for Lakewood Ranch Communities, received proof that setting a good example does make a difference.

Her 11-year-old son, Garrett, was mentioned this month in a Greenlight blog for donating a third of his allowance to charity.

Monaca Onstad works with the Lakewood Ranch Community Fund and said her son noticed how she could make a difference. He wanted to make a difference as well.

He donates $50 of his $150 allowance per month.

he annual Observer Cup provided lots of thrills March 21 at the Sarasota Polo Club, and not all of them were on the field of play.

Ten-year-old Izzy Dore, who was visiting relatives in Lakewood Ranch, came to the Sarasota Polo Club because she loves horses, but she also tried her hand at the Observer newspaper toss contest at halftime.

On March 28, the Sarasota Polo Club will host Fly a Kite Day. The club will provide 200 kites and for $20 each; those who attend can fly them on the field after the game. The event benefits Children’s Cancer Center. Visit SarasotaPolo.com for more information.
