Lost and found Harrison Shepard, 12, and Gregory Shepard, 9, spent nearly two hours Feb. 7 driving a golf cart around Country Club and looking for their lost dog, Higgins, a 6-monthold golden Labrador.

Although they didn’t find him, Higgins eventually turned up in a neighbor’s backyard. He was playing with another dog a half-mile from the Shepard residence.

Gregory Shepard said Higgins is his playmate, and he’s happy they can chase each other outside and play hide-and-seek once more.

Anticipation builds for Braden River Middle project Braden River Middle School renovation and addition project moves forward.

As portables make their way onto Braden River Middle School’s campus, Principal Kimberlain Zenon-Richardson was thrilled to see the renovation and addition moving forward.

Three portables have been put on the campus with three more coming this week. The six new portables will be in addition to the eight already on campus.

“I think my excitement is starting to kick in because we’ve been talking about it, but I haven’t seen any action,” Zenon-Richardson said. “Now that the portables are coming, it’s like: ‘Oh, my goodness. It’s happening. It’s exciting.’”

Doug Wagner, deputy superintendent of operations for the district, said the $26 million project is in phase two, which is the design plans phase. Construction is anticipated to start in April with the entire project scheduled to be completed in August 2022.

The six-classroom addition will add 132 student stations to the campus, which currently has a capacity of 1,086 student stations. The school has 950 students enrolled.

to their different classes that are away from the main buildings.

“Having classes in portables can be a school away from the school in a sense,” Zenon-Richardson said. “Having everyone on the same campus will be great.”

Science teachers can expect upgrades within their labs, which Zenon-Richardson said will provide them more instructional tools for their lessons.

Another upgrade will be the expansion of the cafeteria.

Zenon-Richardson said students have had to find somewhere to eat in the places around campus because not everyone can fit in the cafeteria during the school’s three lunch periods.

Zenon-Richardson said she most looks forward to the new safety features that will be put in place in the administration area.

The main office will become a single-point entry, meaning all visitors must enter directly into the main office before having access to campus.

BY THE NUMBERS

Right now, visitors must walk briefly through the courtyard before entering the administration area. Zenon-Richardson said the change will allow administrators to manage the flow of visitors and students better.

Other renovations to the school include a campuswide HVAC renovation, media center renovations, a new queuing lane and new fencing and gates.

Some of the classroom upgrades include LED lighting, new ceilings, flooring and painting.

Zenon-Richardson said she can’t wait for the project to be complete in 2022.

“I can’t wait to see the final product,” she said. “Hopefully, in the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, we’ll be walking into a newly renovated school.”

School district wants to try an electric bus again after first trial didn’t work.

T

he School District of Manatee County is hoping to make anoth-

er move toward becoming more environmentally friendly with the possibility of an electric bus transporting students.

The district applied for a grant that would cover 75% of the cost for an electric bus through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Electric Bus Project.

If approved, the district would receive $393,043 for the bus. The total cost of the bus is $524,057.

Manatee County is among 23 counties across the state that are eligible for the grant because the Florida Department of Environmental Protection considers them air quality priority areas.

“It could be an exciting adventure, a great learning experience and possibly the beginning to the contribution of cutting pollution in this area,” said Gary Sawyer, the director of transportation and vehicle maintenance for the district.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, diesel exhaust from school buses idling pollutes the air in and around the bus, which contributes to ozone pollution, acid rain and climate change.

The electric bus would have zero emissions and would need to be plugged in to charge rather than filled up with gas.

“Electric could be the wave of the future, not only in school buses and transit buses,” Sawyer said.

“I mean we’re already seeing it in cars like a Tesla.”

Kevin Chapman, the director of strategic and district initiatives for the school district, said that as the largest employer in Manatee County, the district feels a responsibility to the county, its citizens and the environment to become as energy efficient and sustainable as possible.

The district formed a sustainability committee, which consists of district employees and community leaders, to find ways for the district to become more energy efficient and sustainable.

When the committee saw the Electric Bus Project grant, Chapman said the committee believed the district needed to take advantage of the opportunity and apply for the grant.

“It will provide not only a way to see if an electric bus saves money, is efficient and fits well into the school system, but also it’s a learning vehicle for our STEM programs, our vocational programs and our programs at Manatee Technical College,” Chapman said. “It could get a lot of use both on the educational side and on the operational side. We thought, ‘This is a no-brainer.’”

The School District of Manatee County had two hybrid buses that were deployed in its fleet in 2007.

The district was one of the first in the country to purchase the hybrid buses from IC Bus, an Illinoisbased bus manufacturing company.

Within two years of being on the road, the hybrid buses weren’t functioning properly, said Michael Barber, a spokesperson for the district.

As a result, the program was discontinued, and the electric power components of the buses were disabled.

One of the buses has since been sold in an auction while the other remains as a diesel bus in the district’s fleet, Barber said.

“That was 13 years ago, so technology was ahead of its time,” Barber said. “The district tried it, and ultimately, it did not end up working out as they had hoped or as the manufacturer had hoped as well.”

The bus could also be incorporated into Palm View Elementary School’s WOZ Ed Pathway program, which focuses on coding, the engineering design process, drones, cyber security and mobile

development.

If the district’s grant application is approved, the bus could potentially serve three schools on one route similar to the diesel buses currently in the district’s fleet.

Most of the buses would run a route in the morning and afternoon for a high school, middle school and elementary school on any given day, Sawyer said.

Sawyer said the district has yet to decide what route the bus could run because it depends on the bus’s range and miles that it will travel before it has to be charged.

Sawyers said manufacturers believe an electric bus could drive roughly 120 miles before needing to be charged, but other factors can lessen the number of miles a bus could travel. Other factors include how often the air conditioning is used and how long the bus is idling.

The electric bus isn’t the first time the district has tried to introduce an energy efficient bus into its fleet. In 2007, the district was the first in the country to add two hybrid buses to its fleet, but within two years, maintenance issues caused the program to be discontinued.

Charlie Kennedy, a school board member, has been an advocate for the district becoming more green and is excited at the possibility of being one of the first counties to have an electric bus.

“This is just the way we have to go,” Kennedy said. “It’s just a matter of time. It’s not like, ‘Oh, well, this might be something in the future.’ This is the future of transportation. When you look at the cost-benefit analysis, the electric vehicles cost you more up front, but the savings down the road are undeniable.”

Kennedy hopes that in the next five to 10 years, the district will only be purchasing electric vehicles.

Temporary help on the way Charles Hines targeted to become Manatee’s acting administrator.

C

harles Hines wasn’t sure what to do after his eightyear tenure as Sarasota County commissioner ended in November 2020, when he reached his term limit.

As a lawyer, Hines said he enjoyed the impact he could make on his community while working as a commissioner. After his term expired, he began reaching out to local governments to see if he could land a position that would allow him to make a similar impact.

Then he received a phone call Feb. 4. It was Manatee County Attorney William Clague. He wanted to gauge Hines’ interest in the county’s acting administrator role.

“I’m 55; my mind is still pretty good,” Hines said. “I think I can help.”

Hines indicated he was interested, and the county’s search for an acting administrator began to focus on him. The Manatee County Commission voted to direct Clague to begin negotiating with Hines at a Feb. 9 meeting.

Last week, Hines met with several Manatee County commissioners, some of whom he had never spoken with before. He said he will likely meet with the commissioners again this week to begin serious discussions about

the position after he and the board get the chance to research each other more and ensure a strong fit.

Then, they will decide if Hines is to be the interim administrator while the county searches for a permanent administrator. If he isn’t a good fit, the county might not have much time to find someone else. The deadline for Clague and current Administrator Cheri Coryea to negotiate a separation agreement is Feb. 23.

Clague said at the Feb. 9 meeting there are many functions that can only be completed by the administrator, according to county regulations.

Commissioners Vanessa Baugh and Carol Whitmore worked with Hines while he was a commissioner for Sarasota County. They both said Hines would be a good fit for the job.

“One of the best things that I like about Charles is that he’s very good at being able to pull people together,” Baugh said. “I think he will be great at talking to the different personalities. When you have seven people, we each have different personalities. We each have different strengths and weaknesses. He’s great at picking up on that, and he will be able to do something about it.”

“With this severe turmoil at the board level now, we need somebody calm,” Whitmore said. “We don’t need somebody that knows

nothing about government.”

Baugh said Hines can use his prior experience as a commissioner to help Manatee County’s new commissioners learn the intricacies of local government.

She said he can help the board find its permanent administrator, considering he has been part of executive searches before.

Commissioner Kevin Van Ostenbridge said he has one concern.

“I don’t think the public will receive him well because of his close affiliation to [Carlos] Beruff and the development community,” Van Ostenbridge said.

Baugh and George Kruse said the next administrator should come from a private sector background. However, Kruse said Hines could be a good fit on a

temporary basis because he’s familiar with the area. Kruse said Sarasota and Manatee counties are in similar situations on topics ranging from demographics and infrastructure to COVID-19 vaccinations.

Hines said the job is alluring because of his familiarity with the area. He has worked with Manatee County before on endeavors including Nathan Benderson Park, Sarasota Bay Estuary and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

“If this proposed job was in Jacksonville?” Hines said. “No, thanks. Pensacola? No, thanks.

Miami? No, thanks. That’s not what I’m talking about. This is our brother, our sister, our neigh-

bor and people that I’ve worked with. I’ve looked at it as, maybe I can help them out in this short period of time. For me, I think it’s as simple as that.”

Would he be interested in the job on a permanent basis if asked?

“Any response would be getting way too far ahead of everything,” Hines said. “One of my first tasks and priorities is a national search for a permanent county administrator. I understand that this is a question that is always brought up in these interim circumstances and is a fair one, but I think this situation is a little bit different. So respectfully, I would like this one left alone for now.”

Impact fees to be set soon Manatee County is seeking public input about its latest impact fee study before commissioners decide rates, likely in April.

Manatee County will consider raising impact fees that could match the full amount recommended by the county’s 2020 study, which has yet to be implemented.

The county, which is currently at 90% of the total recommended by a 2015 study, is seeking feedback and questions from the public while commissioners evaluate a possible rise in the fees.

Impact fees are one-time fees charged to developers after the completion of construction projects to help cover the cost of increased stress placed on county infrastructure. New development often creates a need to build new roads, parks or emergency services.

Manatee County is required to conduct an impact fee study at least once every five years to ensure relevant data is used to help determine if rate changes are necessary. The county partnered with Tampa-based engineering consulting company Tindale Oliver to complete the 2020 study.

Based on Tindale Oliver’s study, residential impact fees in Manatee County’s Southeast Benefit District could rise as high as 36%-39% over the previous rate, depending on the size of

the house. The southeast district generally extends as far north as the Manatee River and as far west as U.S. 301 and includes Lakewood Ranch.

For example, Tindale Oliver’s study recommended an impact fee on houses of 1,301 to 1,700 square feet in the southeast district to be $16,544, a 37% increase from the current rate of $12,078 (90% of the 2015 study). For houses, 2,201 square feet or more, the rate would be $21,543, which is 39% more than the current rate of $15,460 (also 90% of the 2015 study).

day care centers, hospitals or auto care businesses. Tindale Oliver’s study included an increase as low as 11%, from $924 to $1,028, for every 1,000 square feet of a miniwarehouse built in the southeast district. It also included an increase as high as 603%, from $3,473 to $24,423, for every 1,000 square feet of a private university or junior college built in the southeast district.

Commissioner Vanessa Baugh said it’s a fine line trying to figure out proper impact fees. She noted Manatee County already has the second highest rate for impact fees among Florida counties.

“We need to keep our homes not so outrageously expensive,” she said. “Then when you talk about lower priced homes for our workforce, you have to keep that

in mind. Costs are always given to the buyer. Whoever’s building is going to get their money back.”

The county commissioners will decide whether to raise impact fees to the level calculated by Tindale Oliver in the study, raise them by a smaller level or keep them the same.

County staff and representatives from Tindale Oliver originally presented the study to the commissioners Jan. 19. Knapp said the plan is to present it to the county’s Planning Commission in March and then bring it back before the County Commission in April.

In the meantime, the commissioners can pore through the study’s mounds of data and ask questions while county staff seek input from the public and devel-

opers.

The basic formula for calculating impact fees is the difference between the cost of adding capacity to county infrastructure and the non-impact fee revenue created from future development, multiplied by the demand created from increased population or miles of travel. The methodology used by Tindale Oliver is the most commonly used in the state of Florida, Manatee County Impact Fee Administrator Nicole Knapp said.

Realtor Alex Krumm said that in his 15 years in the business, he has never seen such a discrepancy in the inventory of homes to buyers.

So he was not surprised the Sarasota and Manatee real estate markets reported huge gains in 2020.

Krumm, the 2021 president of the Realtors Association of Sarasota and Manatee, was commenting about the final 2020 numbers released by his association Feb. 11.

Despite the challenges faced from COVID-19, the region soared when it came to housing sales.

The problem the market faces now is providing homes.

“Buyers have to bid against multiple bidders,” he said. “We have builders who signed contracts with buyers on Labor Day and still have not broken ground.”

Krumm said the market is simply supply and demand. He expects to see another “incredibly strong market” in 2021.

He said the market creates an opportunity for buyers to purchase at low interest rates and rapidly increase their equity.

Sales in Lakewood Ranch aren’t slowing down, either. Lakewood Ranch had 281 sales in January, an increase of 94% over the same month in 2020. It was Lakewood Ranch’s sixth consecutive month of record sales.

The Lakewood Ranch luxury market reflects the overall positive numbers. The Lake Club sold 150 new homes and lots in 2020, up from 98 in 2019 and 62 in 2018.

efore the pandemic, Bridgewater’s Christina Amato would go to Lakewood Ranch Cinema at least twice per month.

She loved going to At the Movies with Gus Mollasis on Saturday mornings where Mollasis would show a film and host a discussion of it afterward.

“I looked forward to that every month,” Amato said. “He would have the whole place filled on Saturday morning for those movies, and he would show some foreign movies or just some old-time movies, and we would discuss it.

It was an active, engaged crowd, and he had lot of real movie buffs there.”

Amato hasn’t been able to attend an At the Movies with Gus Mollasis or go to the theater on a Friday afternoon with friends in months because the theater closed due to the pandemic.

On Feb. 27, Amato will have the opportunity to return to the place that has brought her so much joy

over the past eight years during the Sarasota Film Society’s Save Our Cinemas fundraiser.

The Sarasota Film Society is a nonprofit that runs Lakewood Ranch Cinema on Main Street at Lakewood Ranch and Burns Court Cinema in downtown Sarasota.

Trisha Calandra, the vice president of the Sarasota Film Society, hopes the society can raise $20,000 at the fundraiser in hopes of being able to reopen the theaters April 1.

“There’s definitely going to be a future with Burns Court and Lakewood Ranch,” Calandra said. “We’re not sure how long it’s going to take us to get back to business as usual, but it will.

“People love the movies. They love to see the stuff on the big screen. They love the camaraderie of going into the movie theater and everybody crying together or everybody laughing together. We know people are out there, and we know they love it. That’s why we’re trying to save it.”

Amato said she was crushed when the theater closed its doors.

She tried to go with a friend to the Lakewood Ranch Cinema on Friday afternoons during the pandemic to support the theater and the society, but she and her friend would sometimes be the only people in the theater.

“It was heartbreaking [when the theater closed],” Amato said.

“The worst things about the pandemic, for me, were losing my book club and losing the movie theater.”

Calandra said the support from the community for the fundraiser has been overwhelming.

“As soon as the community found out we were doing fundraising, they started sending in donations,” Calandra said. “We’re thankful for the community and local business owners who have donated so much already.”

Whirlwind leads to 3,000 doses W

hen it comes to multigenerational, master-planned communities, Lakewood Ranch is nationally known for selling more homes than anyone else.

Gov. Ron DeSantis knows the reputation.

Schroeder-Manatee Ranch CEO and President Rex Jensen says the governor, though, must have been a little bit foggy on the size of Lakewood Ranch.

It was Tuesday, Feb. 9, and Jensen was sitting in his office preparing for a meeting. The phone rang. On the other end was developer Pat Neal and DeSantis.

“The governor said he was trying to increase penetration with the COVID-19 vaccine into this community,” Jensen said.

“He said Manatee and Sarasota counties could use some assistance, and he wanted to find some additional outlets [to issue the vaccine]. He would bring state resources to bear to give 1,000 vaccinations a day for three straight days. He would use the National Guard to provide logistical direction.

“And he wanted to do it by Friday, [Feb. 12].”

Jensen noted to the governor that Lakewood Ranch was 50 square miles with tens of thousands of residents. Jensen said the governor suggested picking

two neighborhoods, but that wasn’t going to work in Lakewood Ranch. If Jensen picked Country Club and Country Club East, for example, how would the residents of other neighborhoods in Lakewood Ranch feel?

This was going to take some additional thought.

That thought part was why DeSantis was calling Jensen.

“My job was to figure out how to make the nearly impossible happen,” Jensen said. “It’s what I do for a living.”

Jensen suggested using Premier Sports Campus, owned by Manatee County and formerly owned by SMR, as the vaccina-

tion site. He said it made sense to go to the county to use its pool to select those to be notified and vaccinated.

However, Jensen also said he wasn’t in a position to make things happen with Manatee County. He suggested finding someone with the county connections needed to make it all happen. Jensen then called Commissioner Vanessa Baugh.

“She has an idea where all the pieces are,” Jensen said. “That’s why I went to her.”

Jensen called Baugh on Friday, and by Monday, the commissioner had connected the dots, so vaccinations could begin Wednesday, Feb. 10 and run for three consecutive days. Baugh chose ZIP codes 34202 and 34211, which includes parts of Lakewood Ranch, Panther Ridge, Myakka City, Rosedale, Braden Woods, River Club and The Concession.

While the National Guard would handle logistics, Baugh lined up the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office to handle traffic control. Florida Department of Health workers would perform the vaccinations.

“Vanessa did a great job in a limited time,” said Jensen, who noted he had nothing to do with choosing the ZIP codes. “She had three days to coordinate this.

How do you run 3,000 people through the site in three days?”

By Tuesday, Baugh was feeling the backlash from her fellow commissioners, who questioned her being a lone wolf in putting together the vaccination program in Lakewood Ranch. They questioned why the communication with the other commissioners wasn’t better.

Jensen, who has clashed with Baugh many times in the past, obviously feels it’s time to stop worrying about being politically correct.

He said Premier Sports Campus is a logical site to host vaccinations and has been underutilized by the county so far.

“You can crank people in and out of there,” he said.

And he also noted that any decisions made to get the vaccine out to the public is going to be criticized because “people will complain regardless.”

So it’s time to go full-speed ahead.

“This bug doesn’t care where you live or who you are,” Jensen said.

“It’s going to be hard for me to tell the world to come here,” Azinger said during a press conference Feb. 11 at The Concession.

“It’s already crowded.”

Although Azinger, who lives in west Bradenton and is a member at The Concession, was joking, the impact of what he says on the air is no joke. Every time he says “Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton or Sarasota,” the area’s cash registers will be ringing.

Elliott Falcione, the executive director of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, said he will recommend Manatee County commissioners approve a $250,000 expenditure to advertise the area during the tournament, which will capture “Bradenton” banners during certain shots on the golf course.

District 5 Commissioner Vanessa Baugh said she would support such an expenditure. She said the exposure will pay off in the future.

“This is going to bring awareness to East County,” Falcione said. “And this is a tournament where we will draw domestic and international visitors.”

Falcione said the TV coverage could be received in 800 million households around the world.

The 2020 Masters was seen by 5.59 million viewers, so the actual viewership will be lower, but all those households are likely to see commercials and sports reports talking about the World Championships at The Concession along with the Bradenton, Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch areas.

Along with those reports will be news of the Korn Ferry Tour stop Feb. 18-21 at Lakewood National Golf Club. Azinger said he was going to try to attend the Satur-

day round of the LECOM Suncoast Classic, so he might mention Lakewood Ranch and its golf courses during the telecast.

Lakewood Ranch might need to rely on comments from Azinger or aerial shots during the tournament to bring up the nation’s fastest growing multigenerational, master-planned community. Falcione said no Lakewood Ranch banners will be placed on the course by the county because studies have shown Bradenton banners get Manatee County more bang for the buck.

Laura Cole, a senior vice president for Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, said she has no problem with Manatee County’s strategy. Cole said the tournament presents an amazing opportunity, and SMR simply wants to support the effort to put on a great tournament and perhaps pave the way for the PGA Tour to return.

Cole said any TV coverage of the area — whether it is Sarasota, Bradenton or Lakewood Ranch — will send viewers and avid golfers to the internet to research the region’s golf offerings. She said that SMR is spending extra marketing dollars to make sure Lakewood Ranch pops up when view-

ers plug the region’s golf into the search engine.

“This community has nice golf courses,” she said.

She said Lakewood Ranch’s website traffic increased “fivefold” during the Super Bowl as viewers researched the area. She expects the same kind of spike because the search will be concentrated on golf.

That’s why Virginia Haley, president of Visit Sarasota County, will also recommend to her commission that it spends money to promote itself during the tournament.

“We have 70 golf courses in the region,” Haley said. “This could put us on the map as a golfing destination.”

Alex Krumm, the president of the Realtors Association of Sarasota Manatee and the brokerowner of NextHome Excellence, said he doesn’t expect callers to be asking him about houses the week after the golf tournament.

“I can’t say I’ve ever had a single instance where someone called me after a televised event to ask me about a home for sale,” he said.

Krumm, however, said such coverage does send viewers online to look into an area, and that eventually pays off in the long run.

The Concession Owner Bruce Cassidy is confident the coverage will make an immediate impact.

“We’re making sure the golf course is pristine,” he said. “We want to show off the community.”

Falcione said viewers only need to be introduced to visit the area once.

“Our studies show 94% of first-time visitors here return in 12 months,” he said.

Korn Ferry Tour events generate money for charity at their stops around the country. After the 2020 LECOM Suncoast Classic, the tournament donated $25,000 to the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Student Scholarship Fund.

The donation was big because LECOM had to cancel its 2020 Gala at the Hyatt Regency in Sarasota due to the pandemic.

Mark Kauffman, the assistant dean of academic affairs for LECOM in Lakewood Ranch, said 100% of the funds go to the students at LECOM. The funds are distributed to a large percentage of the students due to academic need, academic achievement or other reasons.

Kauffman said LECOM already has the second-lowest priced tuition for private medical school in the U.S. He said the scholarship fund can ease the financial burden on students, so they can leave school with less debt.

A recreational golfer only, Kauffman said the LECOM Suncoast Classic is a great opportunity to support students who might eventually be physicians in the area.

Meanwhile, the PGA Tour has declined comment about any possible charitable donation to the community after the Lakewood Ranch area hosts the World Golf Championships at The Concession.

Because the tournament was switched from its scheduled host site of Mexico City due to the pandemic, the tournament didn’t announce a main sponsor until Feb. 16, when it announced Workday Inc. had come on board.

Even with the pandemic canceling events in 2020 and leading to others being held without fans, the PGA Tour generated more than $160 million in charitable giving. All-time, the PGA Tour has generated in $3.21 billion in charitable giving.

t was just a few weeks ago that Manatee County commissioners were debating whether to spend $10 million on a new shelter for the county’s Animal Services Department.

They didn’t know a 38-acre plot twist was just around the corner.

Although nothing is official, the Mary E. Parker Foundation wants to donate the Bishop Animal Shelter to Manatee County, administrative trustee Bob Blalock said. The foundation owns the shelter, which was founded by Parker’s adopted parents, Lillian and Edward Bishop.

The foundation is planning to donate roughly half of the 38-acre property to the county for the purpose of sheltering animals.

It’s unclear what will happen to the other half of the property, an area that includes walking trails, but Blalock said any potential use must be animal-related.

“Bishop’s board could have gone anywhere and asked any animal organization to run their shelter with this large gift that they have given us,” Commis-

There are two existing shelter facilities on the property.

One is the recently completed, 25,000-square-foot animal rescue center and isolation facility, which was built by Sarasota-based Willis Smith Construction. Its capacity is 68 dogs and 250 cats, and Blalock said the building was constructed to be easily expanded.

“I don’t think there’s a better shelter in Florida,” Blalock said.

The other is Bishop’s original shelter, a 17,000-square-foot facility constructed in 1958. It has a capacity of 68 dogs. Bishop Animal Shelter Executive Director Keith Pratt said Bishop had been planning to renovate the shelter and expand it to 40,000 feet. He added that its drainage system needs to be updated, and tiles are falling off the walls, among other issues. If the shelter is donated, it will be up to the county to decide what renovation or repairs will be necessary.

Blalock said the foundation decided it wanted to donate the shelter about two months ago.

money by eliminating its operating costs.

“It will free us up to spend the money that we’re spending on taking care of the animals, the salaries and everything,” Blalock said. “We can spend that money on other projects that we have.”

County commissioners disagree on what the pending donation would mean for Manatee County Animal Services. Commissioner Vanessa Baugh said the donation, if approved, would definitively eliminate the need for a new shelter.

Whitmore said she has spoken with multiple donors who are still committed to contributing to local nonprofit Animal Network Inc.’s $2 million fundraising drive in support of building the East County shelter, both through their own donations and persuading friends to donate.

She also said it is possible the addition of Bishop Animal Shelter to the county’s facilities could mean the county doesn’t need the entirety of the $8 million earmarked for the East County shelter, which is still in the planning process.

Commissioner George Kruse said it is too early for anyone to know how the possible donation of the Bishop Animal Shelter will impact the county’s Animal Services situation. He is still in the process of learning more about Bishop.

“Anyone who has a definitive answer to that question is answering based on qualitative gut feelings and emotions and not based on reality,” Kruse said.

“It wasn’t anticipated years ago when this $8 million was earmarked. It wasn’t anticipated a couple months ago when the conversation came up about whether or not to rebuild on the current location or just upgrade what we’ve got. This is a major change.

And now we all need to take a step back and assess this.”

edly for one artist in particular: French impressionist painter Claude Monet.

It’s a natural fit at first glance.

Monet did revered, vibrant work of his flower garden and water garden in Giverny, France, in the 19th and 20th centuries, and many have felt it would make sense to highlight such material at Selby’s downtown campus.

But Rominiecki felt it was still too obvious a selection.

“I’ve heard from a number of members and supporters that we do Monet’s garden in Giverny,” she said. “But the thing is, [Monet] has been done already in a number of ways. … What we’ve been doing is trying to feature artists you don’t necessarily associate with nature and revealing a surprising connection.”

Serendipity came a few years ago when Rominiecki was looking up various artists’ works and discovered a series of paintings done by seminal pop artist Roy Lichtenstein — known for his striking colors, thick lines, Benday dots and comic strip and vintage advertisement inspirations.

His work added a different spin to Monet’s water lilies and haystacks.

So, Rominiecki thought, what if the gardens filtered the wellknown works of Monet through the bold, pop-art style of Lichtenstein, then further interpreted the art into Selby’s tangible, 3D space?

Selby Gardens recently opened its “Roy Lichtenstein: Monet’s Garden Goes Pop!” exhibition, which will run through June 27.

The exhibition has a series of installations, newly constructed creations and museum pieces that staff hope will give a full view of the differing styles of both artists.

Familiar components of Monet’s life and body of work can now be seen across the Selby campus, several of which are modeled with strong black outlines and other visual touches for more of a popart feel.

Staff have built red- and yellow-dotted haystack models.

The koi pond now contains Monet’s water lilies along with some Lichenstein-inspired onomatopoeia. The conservatory is now full of Lichtenstein constructs, Benday dots, elaborate murals, weeping willow structures and tropical flowers. A Japanese-style bridge spans a small pond created

by Selby staff and has been painted through Lichtenstein’s lens.

The display at the Museum of Botany and the Arts has comprehensive information on Roy Lichtenstein before leading further in with photos from Monet’s gardens and loaned paintings of Lichtenstein’s interpretations.

Collecting all of that artwork took some doing.

Here is my response to the letter written by Rep. Tommy Gregory (which ran in the Feb. 11 East County Observer).

In reading this letter, I was confounded to read Gregory’s quick dismissal of “[President Joe] Biden’s call now for healing and unity as so hollow and is so unlikely to be answered.”

Is not unity defined as the oneness of mind and feeling which makes for the greatest strength in influence and action?

Is not the role of a legislator to work for the better good of all his or her constituents, regardless of political affiliation?

Gregory’s negative and caustic descriptions of the Democratic Party as one of the “bubbled rich, trapped poor and coastal elites that embrace socialist parties … using identity politics” are not only offensive but contribute to a greater chasm of disunity in the U.S. He must reach out to all constituents in House District 73 not to “explain why Republican policies are best for all Americans” but to be above the fray and to speak and negotiate in a respectful and intelligent manner for the good of all district citizens.

The Bryan brothers, who won 16 Grand Slam doubles titles together, the most in men’s tennis history, were taking on a rotation of pairs from The Lake Club, and they were struggling. They weren’t showcasing their best stuff, of course, and they were laughing along with everyone else — but Bob’s desire to win a point was real.

The brothers, now 42, won 119 total titles together, plus a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London. The brothers are mirror twins, meaning one of them is

Despite their professional careers being over, they still have fun together, they said, and they’re still learning things about each other. The pair got a shock in 2019 when Mike was preparing to marry his now-wife, Nadia Murgasova, and needed a copy of his birth certificate.

“I always thought I was two minutes older than [Bob],” Mike Bryan said. “It turns out he’s two minutes older than me. I looked, and my certificate said ‘second twin.’ It’s a weird thing. Our parents messed it up at birth. Bob’s the bigger one and the older one.”

Pirates begin playoff run in style Star guard O’Mariah Gordon returns to lead Braden River.

“OMG” is back.

Braden River High (12-5) gave previously unbeaten Dunbar High (23-1) an early playoff exit Feb. 11 when the visiting Pirates defeated the Tigers 59-44 in the Class 6A regional quarterfinals.

The game featured the return of Pirates senior guard O’Mariah Gordon, who had not played since injuring her ankle in a 62-57 win against Cardinal Mooney on Jan. 9. Gordon, a two-time Gatorade Florida Girls Basketball Player of the Year, finished with 13 points. She fouled out during the fourth quarter, a sign that her aggressive style has not changed.

“She was as smooth as ever,” Pirates Coach Stephanie Smith said. “She was still dynamic. You can tell she was a little nervous [landing] with people under her, coming off the injury.”

Smith said Braden River’s defense, in particular the team’s rotations on Dunbar senior guard Aaliyah Williams, were the difference in the game. Williams had 26 of the team’s 44 points, but she was inefficient in getting those points. No other Dunbar player scored more than six points.

absence allowed the rest of the Pirates to gain much-needed experience. The Pirates don’t substitute much, and when Gordon is on the floor, it’s difficult to tell her not to do her thing.

When Gordon has been off the floor in the past, it often came during games that had long been decided. Smith said it is difficult to replicate the feeling of an intense game in practice, which is why she’s glad Braden River had a few games of experience playing without its star.

The Pirates went 3-3 without Gordon, dropping games to strong programs in Central

Smith was not concerned about the team’s win-loss record during the stretch because losses aren’t fatal until this point in the postseason. She wanted to see growth, and she did.

“It made us stronger and more

confident,” Smith said of Gordon’s absence. “Tonight [against Dunbar], when ‘O’ [Gordon] fouled out, we didn’t miss a beat.”

Pirates guard Cheyenne Stubbs was the team’s go-to scorer during the stretch. Stubbs is averaging 19.9 points per game and scored 23 points against Dunbar to lead the team. But it’s not just her. Smith said junior forward Bella Patterson and sophomore forward Aaliyah Capers have

been important players in the post. Smith said Patterson has been a steady defensive presence, using her length to affect opposing shots, and Capers has shown an increased level of passion and is looking to score more than she has in the past. Capers had 14 points against Dunbar, the second most on the team.

Smith said she’s looking for her team to recapture the offensive chemistry it had before Gordon’s injury. There’s only one way for that to happen, and that’s by playing more games.

And good news: The Pirates now have a chance at revenge.

On Feb. 17, they host Charlotte, which defeated the Pirates 56-42 on Feb. 5. The game was closer than that for the majority of the time, and the Pirates will have Gordon this time in the regional semifinals. If they win, the Pirates will advance to the regional finals Feb. 19, where they will play either Wiregrass Ranch (14-9) or Palmetto (16-6).

Win both, and Braden River will head to the Final Four two years in a row.

No pressure, Pirates.

Bob Bryan agreed. After being together on and off the court for so long, they have learned each other’s quirks — and learned to live with them.

“We have to be equals,” Bob Bryan said. “We pretty much just keep our mouths shut. That is the only way it works with twins.”

At The Lake Club, the brothers had their usual good time, and it extended to the clinic’s participants. Tig Winsler, a Lake Club member, said the clinic was “magical.”

“Not only did I have fun, but I learned a lot too,” Winsler said.

“They gave us tips for playing doubles, like how to move when not hitting the ball. There’s a lot to think about when you’re on the court. I have played tennis my whole life, and this still

Winsler said she hasn’t tried out her newfound skills in a real doubles match yet — the rain washed out a planned match Feb. 13 — but she feels more equipped for success. Plus, she said, the brothers themselves were sharp and personable. Winsler said Mike Bryan complimented her forehand shot and called her “Tiggy,” which is typically only used by close friends of hers, but she made an exception for him. It got a good laugh out of her.

Bob Bryan said hosting clinics like the one at The Lake Club is still new for the pair. They’re deciding exactly how (and if) they want to run them in the future. For now, the biggest thing is maintaining their working relationship. Mike lives in Tampa while Bob lives in Miami. The residences are close enough to do events like this one, they said, but far enough away to feel like they are living their own lives.

There are some unknowns, but the Bryans are excited about the possibilities.

“We know we love tennis,” Mike Bryan said. “We want to stay in tennis, and we want to teach the lessons that we have learned over the years. If we can make a couple of people excited about it and make them better, that is what we are here to do.”

Stallions training, Gabriella Herrmann took dozens of sugar cubes and put them in a Cool Whip container.

“This is the secret right here,” Herrmann said, gesturing to the small cubes.

Herrmann is the owner of Herrmann’s Royal Lipizzan Stallions in Myakka City.

Sugar cubes are part of the horses’ training, and she needed plenty to treat the horses after they performed in front of an audience of about 100 people during a training session Feb. 11.

Herrmann said she was surprised to see so many people because attendance has been low since the farm opened in December.

“We’re coming into season now, so hopefully, things will pick up,” she said. “It’s a day-by-day thing.”

The pandemic has hit the farm hard in 2020, and the coming months are uncertain for the family. Herrmann said she’s not sure if they’ll be going on tour this summer because some areas where they would typically go for events are opening up while others are shutting down.

She will host a public equestrian training session every Thursday and Friday afternoon and Saturday morning through April.

During the training session, Herrmann shares fun facts about the Lipizzan horses, such as how they are born black or brown, and it takes seven to 10 years for their coats to become their trademark white color.

Herrmann said the horses can sense when it’s a performance day.

One of the Lipizzan stallions dazzles the crowd when it lifts itself up and holds the position for a few seconds at Rebecca McCullough’s command.

Sydney McCullough has grown up with the horses on the Herrmann family farm. She works with Little Willie, a rescue pony.

Samantha Dittman brings her horse to a trot around the arena.

“The horses love it,” she said.

“They’re performers. When you walk through [the barn], you’ll see how they come right away to the gates. We’ll put rails up, so people can get close, and they know as soon as those rails go up, they know it is audience day.”

Besides the training sessions, the Herrmann’s Royal Lipizzan Stallions will host a benefit for the Myakka City School House at 4 p.m. March 7. Admission is a $20 donation for adults, and children 12 years old and younger are free.

They decided to dress up and celebrate Galentine’s Day, a holiday created by the TV show “Parks and Recreation” that celebrates female freindships, by going to the Gal Pal Party at The Mall at University Town Center on Feb. 13.

Jean and Bedinghaus were excited to get free gift bags, watch “50 First Dates” and spend some time together.

While the Gal Pal Party was a time for some to get together with friends for a night of fun, it was an opportunity for family members to bond as well.

Lakewood Ranch’s Victoria Pino went with her daughter, Andrea.

“It’s beautiful to be able to spend time together,” Pino said.

elly and Mike Harmon moved to Woodleaf Hammock in August 2020 and quickly found out moving to a new community during the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult to meet people.

Enter cornhole.

The Harmons attended Casual Cornhole for the fourth time Feb. 11 at Bob Gardner Park, making friends between tosses and enjoying a soundtrack featuring hits by Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin and more.

“I like getting out, enjoying the fresh air in the morning and meeting new people,” Mike Harmon said.

Casual Cornhole will continue at 9 a.m. each Thursday morning through March 11.
