Suit up to fight cancer Head Coach Chris Kawcak’s choice in shoes for Lakewood Ranch High School’s boys basketball game Jan. 28 served two purposes. His green-and-white Converse shoes were part of the school’s “green out” to show school spirit during the team’s game against Braden River High School. The shoes also were to show support for the American Cancer Society during the nonprofit’s Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Week. “Everybody is somehow touched by cancer, so this is an opportunity to do a little part for an effort that matters,” Kawcak said. Jason Mickan (shown above with Kawcak), the head coach for Braden River High’s boys basketball team, sported a pair of Jordan 11 shoes.

Reality jumps off the page Book characters were jumping off the page and sitting in desks at Gene Witt Elementary School on Jan. 28. Staff and students, including Amanda Wallach (above), dressed in their favorite book characters to celebrate Literacy Week. Amanda came to class as a girl from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” book series, complete with clothing from the era, a bonnet and a basket filled with plants.
