Art show benefits students Cheryl Meehan, an art teacher at Freedom Elementary, and Joe Gibson, the art teacher at Carlos E. Haile Middle School (above), received an early Christmas gift Nov. 30. Waterlefe’s Laura Bryg and Judy Kovaleski-Swartz, who are members of the Waterlefe Artists Guild, presented each of the art teachers with a $2,500 check to support their art programs. “This is awesome,” Gibson said. “I’m blown away. You guys continue to amaze me.” The $5,000 donation was the most the Waterlefe Artists Guild has raised during its annual Art Show and Sale.

Local distillery earns award
Signed, sealed and delivered
Steve Milligan once honed his distilling skills in Saudi Arabia, where he was working as a chemical engineer. Saudi Arabia did not allow alcohol, so Milligan built a still. After he retired in the U.S., he decided to put those skills to the test. His new business became Loaded Cannon Distillery at 3115 Lakewood Ranch Blvd. Ever since opening, Milligan has been lauded for his adult beverages. The latest award was when Loaded Cannon was named the 2021 Best Flavoured Vodka Distillery North America by LUXlife magazine. “We have a little something for everybody, and I think that’s something they took into account,” Milligan said. “Not only do we have a variety, but we also use natural ingredients.” Tasting room hours are noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and noon to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
