Making history on the board East County’s James Golden is making history after being named chair of the School Board of Manatee County. The school board unanimously voted to make Golden chair during its reorganization meeting Nov. 16. Golden’s new position makes him the first Black chair in the board’s history. Golden was elected to the board in 2018 and has served as the board’s vice chair for the past year. “I am deeply honored to gain the trust of my fellow board members and become the first African American man to not only be elected to the school board but to be the first African American man to serve as the chair of the School Board of Manatee County,” Golden said.

Fired up about raku pottery Lakewood Ranch resident Susan Kerr has always been an artist. But after taking some clay classes, she became hooked on a different form of art. Raku is a low-firing process that involves removing pottery from a kiln at nearly 1,800 degrees and placing it an enclosed container to create cracking. “I thought I was so old that I couldn’t learn everything,” Kerr said. “But I thought I could learn something and be very good at that.” Kerr’s talents were on display at the 19th annual Fall Art Show & Sale on Nov. 20 at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall. She started the day with 25 holidaythemed raku sculptures and had sold all but a few by the halfway point of the show.
