MATTHEW’S IMPACT DEATHS: The death toll is expected to rise to more than 1,000 in Haiti and the Bahamas and stands at 33 in the United States as confirmed on Tuesday, including six deaths in Florida attributed to the storm. The hurricane has been responsible for deaths in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.

WINDS: Gusts of 107 miles per hour were measured in Cape Canaveral.

tanding in a makeshift shelter Saturday morning in the Braden River High School cafeteria, Barbara Janis talked about sleeping the night before, when she wrapped a table cloth around her after leaving her Titusville home in such haste she forgot blankets.

Janis, 63, was among about 275 people who fled Hurricane Matthew to seek shelter services offered by Manatee County.

“We were packing quick, throwing all our stuff in the car,” Janis said. “All of our family photos were in a large bin, but it was so heavy that I couldn’t possibly load it in the car. So before we left, I double bagged it in big trash bags because I couldn’t bring it with me.

“I hated to leave those photos, I’ve been thinking about it all day today and yesterday. There could be a tree lying on it or water all over it. I hope its OK.” Her husband, Bob Janis, 80, stood nearby, saying how tough it had been to evacuate.

“It’s the fear that you have no protection,” he said. “You’re escaping and running away. You have no plans.”

On Oct. 6, Manatee County’s Sherilyn Burris, the acting emergency management chief, announced the county was opening Braden River High School as a host shelter along with four other shelters at Manatee High School, Mills Elementary, Myakka City Elementary and Nolan Middle School.

By Friday, only Braden River High School remained open as it became obvious Hurricane Matthew was going to have a minimal effect on the Manatee-Sarasota

area.

While local residents didn’t need to seek shelter, Braden River High did host families who fled Florida’s east coast.

As of Oct. 5, hotels were booked in Manatee County, extending north to Tampa as well, according to Jesse Dussault, the general manager at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Lakewood Ranch.

“We answered probably about 1,000 phone calls (from people seeking shelter),” he said. “Following the evacuations, it seemed people were more frustrated about calling millions of hotels as opposed to being scared.”

Lakewood Ranch’s Amanda Tullidge, 28, had relatives who fled the hurricane from Stuart after Martin County residents were ordered to evacuate.

“There’s a strange disconnect because on one hand, you’re relieved that your house and neighbors are safe from the storm,” Tullidge said. “But then at the same time, you’re so worried about the east coast, and the damage that may have been done there.”

Like Barbara and Bob Janis, Indialantic’s John Nipar, 55, found shelter at Braden River High.

“I tried to make this an adventure,” Nipar said. “And last night was wonderful.

“We had the National Guard here, and then this morning, the school staff came and served us breakfast. If this shelter were a hotel, I’d give it six stars. Whoever came up with the idea to do all of this really helped a lot of people.

We could have been casualties.”

Twenty-five-year-old Dylan Horn sported a long blond wig with crazy bangs as he sat among a crowd of more than 400 people Oct. 9 at The Source Church.

From a seat near the back, he heard a story much like his own, one of a man who had made poor choices, but had turned his life around. It was the story of Duane “Dog” Chapman, star of the television series “Dog the Bounty Hunter” and its follow-up, “Dog and Beth: On the Hunt.”

Chapman, whose long blond crazy hair is real, shared his life story during church services at The Source. He spoke of joining a gang, being convicted of murder and his journey of becoming a bounty hunter.

“It means a lot,” Horn said of hearing Chapman speak. “He has a similar story to mine. I’ve been redeemed like he has. I’ve been to prison. He really speaks to the people who feel rougher around the edges, but I feel his message

DOG: DEFINED Duane Chapman earned his nickname, “Dog,” from fellow members of his motorcycle gang, Devils Diciples (intentionally misspelled). Other religious names, such as John the Baptist, were taken. Duane Chapman was the most religious of the group, making fellow gang members pray and refusing to commit crimes while people were away at church. A gang member said, “You’re loyal. You show up for every fight. God spelled backward is, ‘Dog.’” ABOUT DUANE CHAPMAN Born Feb. 2, 1952, in Colorado, Duane Chapman grew up in Pampa, Texas. He served 18 months in the Texas State Penitentiary after being convicted of first-degree murder for being an associate of a man who committed a murder.

He has been married five times and is the father to 12 children and has 14 grandchildren. He and his current wife, Beth, are bail bondsmen and bounty hunters who reside in Colorado and Hawaii.

Duane Chapman became famous for his June 2003 arrest of Andrew Luster, wanted on 86 charges of assault and rape.

ABOUT THE SERIES A&E premiered “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Aug. 31, 2004, chronicling the Chapman’s bounty hunting travels. The show ran for eight seasons.

Chapman’s appearance at The Source stems from a connection between its pastors, Ralph and Joanne Hoehne, and their close friend, internationally known inspirational speaker Tim Story.

Story serves as a life coach to many Hollywood celebrities, including Chapman and his wife, Beth. Joanne Hoehne met Beth Chapman at a dinner Story hosted more than a year ago. About a month ago, the Chapmans called to say they would be in town and offered to speak at The Source.

“They have a unique message,” Joanne Hoehne said. “They can reach a group of people we can’t.

(Dog) comes out of a really rough situation. He has an amazing story of God turning things around for him. He had been in prison.

My husband and I don’t have that kind of story. For us, it’s important for us to bring people of different backgrounds and situations to show that God can give you a second chance no matter what you’ve been through.”

Ralph Hoehne related Chapman’s story to that of the biblical story of Peter, a disciple of Jesus who denied knowing him.

“When God looks at you, and you think, ‘If you only knew what I did,’ God says, ‘Really?’” Ralph Hoehne said. “He’ll take people who are shaky to do some really stable things.”

Chapman, 64, was born in Colorado, but grew up in Pampa, Texas. As a teenager there, he joined a dangerous motorcycle gang.

He committed robberies and other crimes, but always made his gang members pray and refused to burglarize homes on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings — times people typically attend

church services, he said.

“Every crime I committed, I knew (God) was watching,” Chapman said. “Maybe he was a little busy in Vietnam, I thought, and I’d do the robbery.”

In 1976, Chapman was 23 years old when he was in the car at the time one of his fellow gang members shot and killed a man.

After being charged with murder, Chapman left the gang and awaited sentencing.

He was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison.

During that time, he counseled other inmates, became the warden’s barber and shared the Gospel with prisoners and guards alike.

the prison yard, knocking down every guard in his path to escape.

He sprinted after and tackled him when he heard the guard rifle’s click into position.

He’d wanted to save his friend.

Instead, the warden gave him his new profession.

“I was trying to find a way to die so (God) would give me a pass,” Chapman said. “The warden tossed me handcuffs and said, ‘Hook him up, bounty hunter.’”

After 18 months in prison, Chapman was paroled in January 1979 and began his bounty hunting career, chronicled for eight seasons until May 2012 on A&E in the reality television series “Dog the Bounty Hunter.”

He and his wife, Beth, starred in “Dog and Beth: On the Hunt”

on CMT until that series ended in August 2015.

East County residents were excited to hear Chapman’s story in person, after watching him on television for years.

“I liked how he changed his life,” East County resident Natalie Miller said.

Matt Hill, of Palmetto, agreed.

“It was neat to hear where he’s been, where he’s come from,” he said. “It doesn’t matter your background, you can always make the change.”

Joanne Hoehne said The Source helped to offset some of the Chapman’s expenses, but declined further details.

“We’ll just say they’re pulling a favor for us,” she said.

In keeping with the theme of area growth, Benderson Development is making a request of Manatee County for its commercial center off Cooper Creek Boulevard, to the north of University Parkway.

Benderson wants more for commercial and office space, residential units and hotel rooms in anticipation of market demand.

The requests are not yet on the county’s agenda.

“We’re adding some retail and office, possibly, to the plan,” said Todd Mathes, Benderson’s director of development. “We’re making room for future tenant buildouts. It’s an exercise in planning.

We have no specific plans.”

Benderson’s application requests an additional 135,000 square feet of commercial space (951,200 total) added to the plan with much being attached to already planned buildings.

Also included would be an extra 200,000 square feet of office or school use (378,700 total); 150 additional hotel rooms (400

total); and 250 additional residential units (1,017 total).

The request adds eight months to the allowed buildout, extending it to Aug. 30, 2020, as allowed by law because of Tropical Storm Erika in August 2015.

Mathes said most of the additional square footage would be used for tenants’ needs, allowing Benderson to attract larger retailers, such as Home Goods, which required an expansion of the former Shapes unit in The Shoppes at University Town Center.

The proposal only includes a few new buildings, including a 10,000-square-foot building in front of LA Fitness. Another building is planned between Nordstrom Rack and the Hampton Inn & Suites, where a furniture store was once planned.

Benderson Development uses about 18,000 square feet of space behind Home Depot for some of its holiday light displays, as well as document and other storage.

The company has considered an expansion of its headquarters, farther north along Cooper Creek Boulevard, that would essentially double its existing footprint to about 75,000 square feet (compared with 35,000 square feet).

“A lot of it is infill and redevelopment opportunities for the center and the one hotel,” Mathes said.

it likely will go on a triangular undeveloped parcel along Interstate 75, north of Cooper Creek Office Park.

Existing entitlements are in place for 79 residential units that have yet to be developed.

A spot immediately south of the existing Savannah Preserve apartment complex long has been planned for future residential, Mathes said. Entitlements for another 250 units are being requested.

Christopher Hatton, of Kimley Horn & Associates, the company handling transportation studies for the project, said traffic impacts from the proposed changes have already been accounted for in the previous analysis.

“We were conservative when we did the original analysis,” he said.

At the center of the project is preserved land.

“It will stay that way,” Mathes said.

DADDY OF ALL FRAUD SCHEMES 8300 block of Lockwood Ridge Road, Sarasota Scheme to defraud: A woman reported to the Sheriff’s Office that she received a call from a person who identified himself as a sergeant from a supervised prison release program and said she needed to pay $550 to get her father out of jail. The victim paid the money via money gram to an unknown location in Alabama. When she called back the number of the person who called her, the number no longer worked.

BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD 8300 block of Lockwood Ridge Road, Sarasota Trespass Warning: The property manager of a business development called the Sheriff’s Office to request help clearing the area of some “chaps due to various unlawful and nefarious activities.”

Deputies first came upon a slumbering person on the sidewalk who was inebriated. The man was asked to leave, and he did. Another person had been seen urinating against a nearby tree but claimed he was just waiting for a bus. He was pointed to a different bus stop. The officer pointed out, “His gait was as slow as molasses in January, but he made it safely to the other nearby bus stop.” A woman was contacted who was soliciting motorists and she was asked to leave as well.

Another person peddling wares in front of a store also was asked to move along. The woman, who was wearing feathers, packed up and left.

COMFORT CRIME 2900 block of 53rd Avenue East, Bradenton Retail theft: A couple entered a department store and went to the bedding section. The male switched the tag on a comforter while the woman collected other items. The male followed her switching the tags. Store security monitored the couple’s actions and stopped them after they checked out. Deputies gave them a Notice to Appear.

t’s the most wonderful time of the year for the Hunsader family. No, not Christmas.

Think pumpkins.

“The Pumpkin Festival is like Christmas to us,” said 24-year-old Rachel Hunsader of Hunsader Farms. “My cousins and I, ever since we were little, would always run around and play at the festival. Even now, we still run around and we’re all in our 20s.”

Hunsader Farms will host its 25th annual Pumpkin Festival the weekends of Oct. 15-16, Oct. 22-23 and Oct. 29-30.

“We started the Pumpkin Festival because, 25 years ago, craft shows were really huge,” said Kim Hunsader, who is Rachel’s mom.

“So we thought, instead of having crafts, we’d have a hayride and make our own food booths. Then we realized we couldn’t keep up (with all the people).”

The past 25 years has been spent keeping up. Now, with the thousands of people who visit, the Pumpkin Festival has made tremendous leaps since the first one in 1991. Over the years, it has become one of the most popular seasonal events in East County.

This year, Hunsader Farms has various new activities in store for the festival, including Welde’s Bear Show, Agri Puppet Show, Sky High Daredevil Duo, Extreme Raptors Show, Jumping Johnny’s Comedy Theatre, FMX Motocross and the Big Train Ride.

“Every year we try to switch it up a little,” Kim Hunsader said.

The Big Train Ride attraction may sound familiar for those who attended the Pumpkin Festival last year. Though Hunsader Farms did have the train last year, they were not able to get it running. This year should be different.

“We advertised it last year, but we had just laid the [train] tracks down and didn’t realize that the track had to settle,” Kim Hunsader said. “This year, it’s going to be awesome. People are going to be riding past exotic animals and stuff.”

Preparing for the festival isn’t easy. It includes months of preparation and a lot of time.

“There’s a lot of physical work we have to do out here, but it’s fun,” Kim Hunsader said. “We work seven days a week for at least a month and a half, calling crafters and vendors, and even making our own scarecrows.”

responsible for the creation of the scarecrows. The two of them enjoy working together, and it’s a project they start in August.

“We usually have to take the old scarecrows and redo them, and all summer long I keep my eye out for cheap clothes,” Connie Hunsader said. “Rachel usually helps me make most of them.”

The Hunsader family takes pride in their festival.

“It’s very family oriented and it’s more of a country feel rather than a carnival,” Kim Hunsader said. “A lot of people come from up north and say it reminds them of the festivals they have had.”

“The Pumpkin Festival is the closest thing you’ll get to fall in Florida,” Connie Hunsader said.

‘Coffee with a Cop’ stories not all sugar-coated

Y

ou can shake hands with Bob Mealy, a captain and District 3 commander for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, and never notice the scar on the bottom side of his wrist.

Obviously, he knows it is there.

He also knows the exact date he got it. Monday, April 14, 2014.

It was that day Mealy, responding to the report of an armed bank robbery, chased a white pickup until it came to a halt, due to shredded tires, on the 5100 block of 33rd Street East in Bradenton.

Mealy sat in his patrol car, keeping his distance from the suspect’s vehicle. He kept his eyes locked on the driver’s side mirror.

In the pickup, 24-year-old Ross Chrisman sat behind the wheel, his hands clutching something to his chest. Mealy was correct in thinking it was a gun.

In a heartbeat, Mealy said Chrisman spun, and started firing, a bullet piercing Mealy’s windshield and hitting him in the wrist.

and a later report found Chrisman shot himself during the gun battle and died.

Fortunately, Mealy was fine.

Just part of the job.

On National Coffee with a Cop Day, Oct. 7, Mealy sat at Popi’s Place on the Ranch and tried to explain how a law enforcement officer tries to mix a compassionate, caring nature with the

ability to spring to action if a threat presents itself.

“The phenomenon is called hypervigilance,” Mealy said.

“There is a lot more non-excitement in this job.”

If you look up the Wiki definition, hypervigilance is the “perpetual scanning of the environment to search for sights, sounds, people, behaviors,

public in a casual atmosphere.

This was the first time the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office has participated. Besides Popi’s, the Sheriff’s Office had representatives at Mixon’s Groveside Café and Mocha Joe’s Café in Bradenton.

“I really believe for most of us, this is a calling,” Mealy said.

“Most of us want to help people.

We want to make it more safe.”

Mealy hopes Coffee with a Cop becomes quarterly, and will offer a chance to get to know, or even mend fences with, local law enforcement officials.

The conversation could cover a growing heroin epidemic in the county, the rash of car burglaries or even the care of police dogs.

It is safe to say I have never wanted such a job. Thank goodness someone does.

Those officers, male and female, must navigate a world full of distrust, especially with so many recent, high-profile, police-related shootings.

Mealy understands, and is quick to say, “There are bad cops out there.”

However, having put on the uniform 21 years ago, and now 54, Mealy still operates with the firm conviction most people understand law enforcement officials are the good guys.

“I believe the silent majority respects and supports law enforcement,” said Mealy, who by the way, doesn’t drink coffee.

Manatee County works to sell half-cent tax

Manatee County Commissioner Vanessa Baugh hosted the first in a series of informative meetings to educate the public about reasons the county is seeking the passage of a half-cent sales tax on the November ballot.

The meeting was held Oct. 4 at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall.

“I came out to hear (the information),” Bridgewater’s Felicia Seedorf said. “It clarified the needs.”

Baugh had said the meeting wasn’t intended to persuade the public to vote yes or no, but rather to provide as much information as possible.

The meeting obviously didn’t convince some who attended a tax is needed.

Summerfield’s Garry Andersen said he still has lots of questions about the tax, and he didn’t believe the county has a solid process for budgeting and planning future infrastructure needs.

“The problem is you can come up with projects a dime a dozen,” he said. “Are they real projects? I don’t know if I got real answers.”

The tax will not be levied on food or prescription medicines.

Manatee County government believes the tax will shift part of the burden of paying for aging infrastructure away from property owners.

If approved by voters in the Nov. 8 election, the tax, which will appear as item No. 6 on the county referendum, would bring Manatee County’s sales tax to 7 cents per dollar, the same as Sarasota County, if the existing school half-cent sales tax is renewed as well.

The initiative is separate from an effort by the Manatee County School Board to renew its halfcent sales tax.

The county will use revenue from the tax for specific infrastructure-related projects — repair and maintenance of existing roads, sidewalk and lighting projects, equipment for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and parks and libraries.

From cocaine abuser to man of substance University Park’s Michael Richker says he lives a life of surrender, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

At 71 years old, University Park resident Michael Richker begins each morning by praying, journaling and reading from books worn along their edges.

On Nov. 26, the clean-shaven, energetic man who was the longest-serving president of his congregation, Temple Emanu-El, will have been sober for 27 years.

He is recovering from a cocaine addiction.

“The disease still talks to me every day,” he said. “Journaling, reading and praying — it’s the only way to find reprieve.”

On Oct. 11 to Oct. 12, during Yom Kippur, the “Day of Atonement,” he is reminded his life story is one of redemption.

“Here is someone who was in a really dark place,” said Temple Emanu-El’s Rabbi Elaine Glickman. “He chose a different way.

A lot of his story is so inspiring. It shows what Yom Kippur is about, charting new paths.”

Rabbi Mendy Bukiet, of Chabad of Bradenton, said the holiday offers a unique focus on restoring relationships.

“It is a time to correct things that need correcting, not only between us and God, but also the things that need correcting between us and others,” he said.

Like many of his colleagues, Richker attended college, gradu-

ated and got married. Beyond that, his story veers away from normal.

He started drinking during those years, but when his first wife left after two years of marriage, alcohol became an escape.

He would drink a fifth of bourbon at home, in addition to whatever he drank outside it.

Eager for change, he packed up his things to join the family business in Chicago, stopping in California to visit a friend on his way there.

That’s when his addiction to marijuana started.

“I smoked a joint and nothing happened. I smoked another joint and nothing happened. I smoked the third joint and everything went snap, crackle and pop and I liked it,” Richker said. “I like to say I only smoked once and that was from July of 1969 to February of 1981 because I smoked every day.”

In February 1981, he got his first taste of cocaine while at a trade show in Atlanta. When he returned home, he called all his friends until he found one who knew a supplier.

Eventually, in October 1989, his family — second wife, Lila, and two children, Rick and Lisa, then 17 and 14, asked him to leave. He decided to go to a treatment center.

“I cried out, ‘Dear God, please take this from me. I can’t do it

anymore,” Richker said. “And then a miracle happened. I believe I am a miracle today — that God lifted this obsession from me.”

From that moment forward, Richker resolved to stay clean.

Long-term sobriety, he said, stems from two things: total surrender and total defeat.

He now celebrates his life with his partner, Joan Blum. He volunteers with Temple Emanu-El and with Jewish Family and Children’s Service of the Suncoast, meets with fellow recovering addicts, counsels at the Resurrection House and takes his message of sobriety into the Sarasota County jail and a detox center once monthly.

Richker believes God has kept him alive to help others.

“My sobriety is still the No. 1 thing in my life,” he said. “If I don’t have that, I lose all of that other stuff. You have to remember that every day. This disease is relentless.”

THUNDER’S EDGE Senior’s versatility gives the ODA football team an advantage on both sides of the ball.

His hair isn’t quite Swiss Army Knife red, but it’s close.

It makes sense, too, because Out-of-Door Academy’s senior football captain, McCabe Ballance, can do just as many things on the field as that utility knife.

Primarily a linebacker, Ballance has been used as a hybrid wide receiver/tight end when the offense needs muscle. In the past, he has played on the defensive line, as a safety and on the offensive line. Against St. Stephen’s on Oct. 8, he threw a pass on a fake punt and lined up as a deep return man on the kickoff.

ODA coach Ken Sommers has faith in Ballance, and he pointed to last season’s game against Jordan Christian.

The Thunder were outmatched by the Seahawks, but it didn’t deter Ballance, who played with fire and was constantly in the backfield disrupting plays. In a losing effort, Ballance played like a champion. His teammates took notice as he set the tone.

This season, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Ballance has become a fearsome edge rusher and has given the Thunder offense an improved blocking presence as a receiver.

Ballance’s favorite on-field memory stems from a game last

season against St. Pete Catholic. The Thunder were down 19 points heading into the fourth quarter, but they rallied to send the game into overtime. St. Pete faced a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line on its first overtime possession and ODA held with Ballance recording the tackle.

The Thunder scored on their first play of overtime to win.

The Thunder know they can depend on Ballance. In the fourth quarter of a game against St. Stephen’s this season, Ballance came to the sideline after helping his team score, threw up in a trash can and sprinted back on the field to play defense.

Although he is a multipurpose player, Ballance said he feels most at home on defense. He finds it more natural, and there’s something about hitting that makes him feel alive.

Besides his exploits on the field, Ballance wants to major in political science in college

with the hope of working in a public service job or as a political analyst. A self-proclaimed “politics nerd,” he loves debates.

He’s jumping on that dream early as the school president. With a solid GPA and a stellar resume of extracurriculars, Ballance is facing a choice: whether to play football at a small college or put his effort into academics and head to a bigger school.

Whatever he decides, his coach is behind him.

“He’s the personification of what an Out-ofDoor student-athlete should be,” Sommers said.

four-game stretch. He’s been playing soccer since he was 2, but this is his first season with the Chargers.

McElyea is having the time of his young life, not just because his team is winning (although that helps), but because he gets to play with his friends, specifically Mateo Tsakiris, Broden Beorlegui and Jaxon Lemus, who McElyea said also score lots of goals with “really good bullet shots.”

“It was a team effort,” McElyea said. “We couldn’t have won the tournament without them (his teammates).

Playing in an U9 soccer league, but talking like a pro athlete. I couldn’t get enough of this kid.

McElyea’s mother, Candice, said her son is quite the ham even when not talking to reporters. She said her son’s favorite thing about soccer, while not as noticeable as scoring goals, is the camaraderie he has gained with his friends.

“It’s so awesome to watch as a mom,” Candice McElyea said.

I asked McElyea what was going through his mind when his team won the tournament.

“It felt good, I don’t know.”

What is his favorite thing about soccer?

“Something I can’t explain.”

I guess I will have to figure it out. After all, I’m a genius.

hen I was 3, I used to run around my house telling people, “I’m a genius.”

That wasn’t necessarily true, but people were impressed because I knew the word, so they laughed and agreed with me.

Confidence, in doses, can be a good thing.

Last week when I asked 8-year-old soccer player Parker McElyea what he wanted people to know about him, he said, “I’m really good at soccer. I score awesome goals all the time.”

His quote brought me back to my childhood and made me smile. “Good for you,” I told him.

Kids should take advantage of their exuberance at a time when it has no negative effects.

McElyea plays for the Lakewood Ranch Chargers U9 boys soccer team. The team won the 2016 Chalice Cup, the first tournament of its season, on Oct. 9 at the Premier Sports Campus.

Over four games, the Chargers outscored their opponents 27-5.

The Chargers U12 girls soccer team also took home the first place prize for its age category, so it was a good weekend for the program overall.

McElyea likes playing forward the most because that’s when he gets the most chances to score.

His coach, Luis Baeza, moves the kids around to all different positions, though, and McElyea even played a little goalie during the tournament.

He didn’t like that too much.

ill Creek’s Amy Bell and Lakewood Ranch’s Erinn Siemer meandered around Nathan Benderson Park with a craft beer in hand, and they already were thinking about the next one.

“There are so many great beers,” said a smiling Siemer of the sixth annual Beer, Boats and Bacon Festival Oct. 8, at Nathan Benderson Park.

While they were tastetesting the beer part of the festival, they had plenty of options snackwise.

To go with samplings of more than 60 craft beers, the event also featured bacon-centric dishes from local restaurants and caterers.

Beer and bacon lovers also heard live music throughout the day and had the opportunity to try canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding on the lake.

hen Patti Wrobel walked into Gold Coast Eagle Distributing on Oct. 6 for the Lakewood Ranch Community Fund’s first Oktoberfest, she expected some really good beer.

She didn’t expect a beautiful room to host the event with lovely decorations.

“I was amazed when I walked into this place (Gold Coast Eagle Distributing),” said Lakewood Ranch’s Wrobel, 69.

“I thought it was going to be a warehouse or something, but it was really nice.”
