Pumped up about donation When Lakewood Ranch resident Frank Catania (above) stopped for a slice of pizza at The Shoppes at Summerfield on Jan. 12, his curiosity about OneBlood’s Big Red Bus got the best of him — for all the right reasons. That moment of curiosity led to Catania donating blood, something he said he had never done before stepping onto the bus. “I always saw the flyers around work, so I thought I’d go and donate blood and do something good,” Catania said. OneBlood’s Darcy Bessette said that Catania was one of nine donors to that point of the day, and they were well on their way of exceeding their goal of 12 donors. All donors received a T-shirt and $20 e-gift card.

Chalk it up to teamwork Braden River High School freshmen Barbara Baeza and Ali Smith (above holding a mock-up of the project) checked to see how much progress the other 298 students were able to make on their “Finding Nemo and Dory” chalk mural they were working on Jan. 18-19. The high school artists were working on the sketch of Pixar’s aquatic characters Nemo, Dory, Crush, Hank and Bruce from “Finding Nemo” and “Finding Dory.” Throughout the day, hundreds of other students used their skill to bring the characters to life. “It was cool to see the progress without us being there,” Smith said. “It’s also cool to be able to work on it with other grade levels of students.” The 800-square-foot mural was dedicated to this year’s graduating class. It took about 300 students about 15 hours across two days and about 350 sticks of chalk to complete.
