here’s nothing like the start of a new calendar year to really ramp things up in the ambition department.

Come on, 2015 was like, so seven days ago. This is 2016, and things are going to be different. Those running shoes weren’t being “neglected” — they were just aging in their box. Like a fine wine. Last year was a huge one for craft beer in Sarasota. Not only did JDub’s Brewing Co. and Big Top Brewing Co. each celebrate their one-year anniversaries, but downtown Sarasota also saw the addition of a World of Beer, and bars and restaurants across the county put an added focus on providing local and regional craft brews.

Now Jeremy Joerger, owner and founder of JDub’s Brewing Co., will host a three-day beer summit, which will include dozens of panels and classes led by local and national industry leaders to teach up-and-coming brewers and professionals alike. The event is the first of its kind in Florida and will round things out with a welcome session, pool party and local brewery tours, all aimed at boosting the local industry.

The best things come to those who wait.

That sentiment is certainly true for this year’s Asolo Reperotry Theatre season and the world-premiere production of the bio-musical, “Josephine.” Arriving at the tail end of Asolo Rep’s current season, which is focusing on the issues of race and identity in America, “Josephine” will dive equally deep into the racial reservoirs through the life story of legendary singer, actress and entertainer Josephine Baker (1906-1975), the original triple-threat. Baker became an international sex symbol, performing throughout America and Europe during the 1920s and ’30s. Baker will be brought to life by Deborah Cox, and the production is bound for Broadway soon after the Asolo Rep run.

Drivers on South Tamiami Trail are no strangers to this long-anticipated addition to the Sarasota arts community. With every new development, in plain view on morning and afternoon commutes, the excitement continues to build. This year, the Sarasota Museum of Art is projected to open its doors to the public.

The museum, which is a division of the Ringling College of Art and Design, will feature 60,000 square feet of exhibition space, a 110-seat auditorium, a sculpture court, indoor and outdoor cafés and classrooms and studios for educational programs and will be a haven for contemporary-art lovers to view an ever-revolving series of exhibitions.

It’s the beginning of the end with Sarasota Opera’s production of Giuseppe Verdi’s titanic Egyptian drama, “Aida.” Along with “The Battle of Legnano” (Feb. 27 to March 18), “Aida” is the last production in the opera’s nearly 30-year quest to perform every major and minor piece written by the composer, as part of its Verdi Cycle.

The Sarasota Ballet will set off explosive ballet fireworks during the sixth program of its 25th season. “Ashton & Balanchine” features works by two giants of the ballet world. First is the Sarasota Ballet’s patron saint of dance, Sir Frederick Ashton, and the knight’s “Enigma Variations.” The

1968 ballet features music from Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations,” and the Sarasota Ballet will be the first company to add the piece to its repertoire.

Closing the program is perhaps the most patriotic ballet placed onstage.

Choreographed by George Balanchine in 1958, the ballet is Balanchine’s love letter to his adoptive home country. The ballet is divided into five movements, all set to the music of America’s march king: John Philip Sousa.

The brainchild of Geordie Rauch, Vic Falck and Jason Thompson, Calusa Brewing Co. is the latest addition to Sarasota’s booming craft beer industry. After sitting down with the three last year to discuss their role as the new face in town, Rauch, Falck and Thompson say they’re eager to honor local history and find their niche in the scene while helping increase local enthusiasm for quality brews. And after tasting some of their initial test batches, we can vouch — they’ll have no problem finding enthusiasts.

Expect an opening for the 8,500-square-foot facility and taproom with a penchant for hoppy West Coast beers and barrelaged sours and stouts sometime this February.

The Sarasota Orchestra welcomes two guests for its fifth Masterworks series. Veteran conductor Neeme Järvi leads the orchestra through a program of musical heavy-hitters, including Johannes Brahms’ “Tragic Overture in D Minor,” Wilhelm Stenhammar’s “Piano Concerto No. 1” and Richard Strauss’ iconic and cinematic “Also sprach Zarathustra.”

Joining Järvi and the orchestra is accomplished Swedish pianist Per Tengstrand, who was the youngest person ever to be decorated by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden with the country’s Royal Medal Litteris et Artibus for outstanding service to the arts.

The Ringling continues its focus on Asian art and culture. This year, the anticipated Center for Asian Art in the Dr. Helga Wall-Apelt Gallery of Asian Art is expected to open its doors to the public. Last year, the Selby Foundation donated $250,000 toward the completion of the gallery space, in addition to Dr. Helga Wall-Apelt’s pledge of $30 million and 1,700 pieces of Asian art from her estate. Expect an opening in March or April.

In perhaps the biggest musical moment in Sarasota in recent memory, Renée Fleming will join the Sarasota Orchestra for her premiere performance at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

The face of operatic and classical singing, Fleming has received numerous honors, including the National Medal of Arts, four Grammy Awards and was the first classical artist to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl in 2014.

A joint production between the Sarasota Orchestra and the Van Wezel Foundation, Fleming’s performance will help raise funds at the orchestra’s annual gala dinner with a personal meet-andgreet after the concert.

STUDIO SPACE: Ki Woon Huh The master pottery artist breaks the mold.

K

i Woon Huh was meant to create art. Growing up in South Korea in the 1960s, he was a self-taught prodigy, sketching with pencil and paper in kindergarten and winning school-wide competitions by 18. But like many artists, his parents wanted him to pursue a more traditional career, so he went on the hunt for a more stable job.

But despite his best efforts, he couldn't escape his artistic curiosity. His next source of inspiration wasn’t an art studio or museum. It was a hot sauce manufacturer.

“In Korea, we use ceramics and pottery to store all of our ingredients and sauces,” says Huh, who uses his son, Young, as a translator. “When I saw them in a restaurant, I immediately stopped by the manufacturer and asked how they made them. I went from there and taught myself how to make pottery. I was bored from just drawing and painting. I took what I was drawing and painting and put it on my pottery.”

Huh has been a master potter and teacher in Sarasota since he immigrated to southwest Florida in 2000. Working and teaching daily in his cozy ceramics studio, which sits behind his house on

“I use shade, color and design when I create my pottery. Every time I make something, it’s from my drawings. If there were no drawing or painting, I wouldn’t have this outlet in ceramics. To be a good artist, you have to draw every day.”

Mink Road, Huh creates in an arts oasis, which also includes a gaspowered kiln (which reaches temperatures as high as 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit) and has an immense pottery gallery inside his house.

On this sunny December day, Huh and his family were preparing his gallery for one of his open houses, in which he opens up his home and studio to the public and displays his art for sale.

His origins in pottery may have begun in bowls and cups, but Huh’s portfolio boasts dozens of pieces that sometimes look like they defy the laws of physics.

Teapots look like they’re made out of clouds. Vases are covered in minute details reminiscent of tree vines and leaves. Huh’s pottery style spans from photographic detail, like a lifesize replication of ballerina’s legs in mid-performance, to abstract creations

that look like they jumped out of a Salvador Dali painting. And it’s all handmade.

“One of the first things you learn when you come here, is that you’re not here to learn how to make tea cups,” says Dan Harris, a local musician, who has been a student under Huh for the past three years. “He says ‘Show me your sketchbook,’ and he teach-

es you how to draw things from everyday life and how to create them out of porcelain.”

Huh, when he’s not teaching full time, finds time to work in his studio on his own work after dinner or late into the night, with classical music playing on his studio’s radio. In those spare hours, Huh creates about 50 major works each year. When he’s on a roll, he has even created as many as 400 miniature cups for a custom pieces in a single day.

Although he’d like more time to work on his own, Huh is thankful for the opportunity to teach.

“I get to meet such talented people who are great artists,” says Huh. “I have learned so much from other people and my students, and those ideas have always inspired my art.”

“I study everything around me a lot. I’m constantly drawing what I see on a day-to-day basis. From television to books, I draw everything I see that's interesting. Even though I make pottery, I’ve never stopped drawing.”

T

here’s an elephant in the room when it comes to Sarasota’s arts community. We’re often referred to as the cultural capital of southwest Florida. After all, we’ve got everything: an opera, a ballet, James Beard Award-nominated chefs, a world-class museum and too many art galleries to count.

The list goes on. There’s only one problem: Where’s the music venue?

Sure, there are plenty of places to catch a live band, but for the

most part, the music is the secondary focus at the establishment. For fans and musicians in search of a dedicated live music venue, the answer usually lies in another city, like Tampa or St. Petersburg.

It’s been a chief complaint of Sarasota’s younger crowd, and music-lovers in general, for years, and it’s a problem Bradenton residents Morgan Bettes and Wade Hamilton think they can solve.

“It’s definitely something that’s missing,” says Hamilton, a Bradenton native and former creative director at Realize Bradenton. “If you look at any vibrant downtown core, you’ll see at least one music venue. It’s just part of the complete picture.”

After three years of working at Realize Bradenton alongside Bettes, the organization’s former executive and creative associate, Hamilton says the two gained

Hamilton describes their vision for the venue as something similar to nearby music clubs, like the State Theater or the Local 662 in St. Petersburg. He says Independent Jones will have a capacity of about 300 people and will be housed in a renovated building within walking distance to downtown Bradenton. It will feature all the amenities associated with a legitimate venue: a proper backstage and load-

ing area, professional sound and video systems and a three-month rotating schedule of local bands, as well as regional and national touring acts. Hamilton says the venue would operate Wednesday through Sunday, with weekdays being free nights and weekends offering ticket prices of anywhere from $5 to $20 tickets, depending on the band.

In addition to hosting monthly events, the project is currently in the process of securing investors and finalizing a location, and Hamilton estimates an opening date of October or November of this year.

Ben Bakker, an area musician, commercial real estate agent and one of Independent Jones’ first investors, says he sees the project as a great opportunity for growth.

“It’s part of the successful evolution of any city that’s looking for growth,” he says. “There are so many talented bands in Sarasota and Bradenton that are just looking for an opportunity, and this is just another piece of the puzzle.”

Independent Jones’ first concert, Barn Burner, held in November, drew more than 400 attendees, and this Friday, it launches its new partnership with the Manatee Performing Arts Center, which will consist of four concerts in January, February, April and May. Bettes says she hopes to see continued support for the venture and to provide Sarasota and Bradenton with something that’s long overdue — an artistic outlet for live, original music.

“It’s important to give the community something they can connect with,” she says. “And everybody can connect with music. It’s a simple goal, really. And we think it’s attainable.”

Perlman Music Program celebrates its 12th year JUNE LEBELL MUSIC CRITIC

It’s hard to believe the Perlman Music Program has been weaving its musical magic for 12 years and, as we were entering the Sarasota Opera House to hear another of its Celebration Concerts, “Same Old, Same Old,” was running through my mind.

After all, how long can musicians, even great ones like Itzhak Perlman, churn out exciting, fresh performances?

It seems that’s not a problem for Itzhak, his wife, Toby (the heart and soul of the program), and the multitude of talented young students they bring with them every Christmas and New Year holiday to study, rehearse, perform and share their great gifts with all of us. The format for the Celebration Concert remains the same: a choral performance by all the kids and faculty, followed by the nitty-gritty of it all – a concert featuring the string orchestra made up of the youngsters and conducted by the Master, himself.

Although the construct was the same, there was something different, freshened and even more inspiring chasing away “Same Old, Same Old,” and making it all new again.

Patrick Romano, the chorus master from the Juilliard PreCollege division, has started turning the young instrumentalists into a good sounding choir.

We all acknowledge these kids (and their mentors) aren’t singers. But they’re great musicians; musicians who can learn a lot about their violins, violas and cellos by using their internal, God-given instruments. Phrasing, breathing and communicating are all important aspects of playing an instrument and, when done properly, nothing teaches musicians how to sing with their instruments better than singing with their voice.

Their excerpts from “Messiah” and the bouncy “Laudamus Te” from the Poulenc “Gloria” were rough but, except for one misplaced high Ab on a final “Laudamus Te,” very much in tune and very musical.

Gyorgy Orban’s exciting “Daemon Irrepit Callidus,” which is an uncanny reminder of Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” was thrilling.

downright gorgeous, sounding as good as any chorus on the professional circuit.

Then came the instrumental part of the concert. This year, the program had more meat to it, starting with Elgar’s “Serenade for Strings,” an emotional work with a heart-rending Largo that pulled the strings on the stage into the strings of our hearts.

I almost always prefer the original versions of chamber works, but the first two movements of Debussy’s String Quartet had even more color and texture (especially with the addition of a trio of string basses) in the string orchestra version, and Mr. Perlman, leading without overconducting, made beautiful music with his musicians.

For me, the most satisfying piece was the Bach “Chaconne,” arranged for string orchestra by Hideo Saito, the 20th century cellist, lecturer, conductor and teacher of the illustrious conductor, Seiji Ozawa. It was a performance that would have made Leopold Stokowski, who brought us so many great Bach transcriptions, proud, with Saito, Perlman and the PMP String Orchestra bringing an organic, organ-like sound that was romantic but true to the great Baroque tradition that Bach built with such genius.

The PMP Strings, under the direction of Itzhak Perlman, with Toby Perlman’s love of talent and kids overseeing everything, is a miracle of the Sarasota area. May they grace us with their gifts for dozens of years to come.

FLAT WHITE Armed with all the equipment one could find in a coffee connoisseur’s dream kitchen, Justin Banister can make almost every drink at Out and About Coffee that’s available at its sister coffee shop, Perq Coffee Bar. “There are tons of office buildings all around me, and there aren’t any coffee shops,” he says.

“There’s no place you can go, take a quick breather from your work, and go back with a fresh cup of coffee and be a bit more productive.”

Banister wakes up at 5:45 a.m. to load his coffee caravan with his slick mobile coffee bar, a Slayer espresso machine, two drip coffeemakers and one bean grinder.

He gases up his two generators and arrives at his corner by 6:45 a.m. to prep his first round of fresh-brewed coffee. Decked out in a plaid flannel shirt and jeans, Banister is ready to spread his love of craft coffee to the masses.

“I definitely think it’s a risk to take coffee out of the shop,” he says. “You’d maybe have an hour at a coffee shop where you’re sitting and chilling with some friends. But the typical 9-to-5 worker isn’t going to have that much time. I’m trying to create that feeling in a 10-minute interval.”

After two months on the corner, Banister says he’s built a dedicated following. With 600 Facebook followers and more than 800 Instagram followers, Banister is spreading his love of artisanal coffee throughout Sarasota and beyond.

“I want to change people’s minds on what coffee can be,” he says. “I want them to think of coffee as not just something convenient, but as something to appreciate, like a great glass of wine.”

coctions for Sarasota’s craftcoffee crowd. However, instead of remaining behind the counter, Banister is taking the coffee out of the shop and to the people, via Out and About Coffee, which he hopes will bring the coffee-house atmosphere of Perq to the street corners of downtown Sarasota.

A mobile coffee bar, Out and About Coffee was designed by Banister and Keith Zolner at the end of 2014. With a background in carpentry and electrical work, Banister built the bar, and earned city certification as an official “hot dog cart.” He now sets up

What materials are the bags made of?

“I wanted a durable but stylish material, so I used bicast leather in great colors and added fun prints, too. It is CPSIA compliant and phthalate free. I also custom designed all of the hardware and patterns.”

How did you come up with the concept and design?

“I can’t stand the black hole (my purse) and having to dig through my bag. I have been using a myriad of different bags to stay organized, from Ziploc bags to random cosmetic bags to mesh bags — there was nothing cute about it. I love fabulous bags, and I think the inside should look just as nice as the outside. I kept complaining to my husband that there should be one collection of bags in different sizes, colors and patterns to mix and match. One

hen the new year comes around, one of the most common resolutions amongst people is to get organized. For most, this organization is about the home or the workplace, but this year, we’re amped up about getting those giant purses we carry around organized. Every woman knows that the way the inside of your bag looks is a sneak peek into what your life looks like. And for most of us, it’s not pretty.

Lucky for us, Sarasota native Amie Swan has a solution: bags to organize your bag. The line, OTG | 247, launched Dec. 3 and features a collection of bags in different sizes, colors and patterns and is designed to keep your bag under control and as fashionable on the inside as it is on the outside. We talked to the designer to learn more about her new brand.
