The Sarasota Orchestra’s distinct musical identity is epitomized in an upcoming performance. It is not only comfortable in a concert hall; it is equally adept at Pops concerts highlighting the popular songs of radio and Broadway musicals in an unorthodox locale — a baseball stadium.

The Orchestra in the Outfield: “A Salute to American Idols” program May 9, at Ed Smith Stadium, is the second time the orchestra will present fresh arrangements of popular songs in American history in an outdoor setting.

“We’re going to reach people who have never heard the Sarasota Orchestra before, and they’ll want to go to a Pops concert or even go hear Beethoven,” says Pops conductor Andrew Lane. “I like to think this one concert will broaden the audience’s horizons.

There’s really nothing like listening to a full symphony orchestra play.”

The stadium concert started last year as a collaboration between Pat Joslyn, vice president of operations and artistic planning for the Sarasota Orchestra, Gordon Greenfield, vice president of marketing, sales and public relations for the Sarasota Orchestra, and David Rovine, vice president of Orioles-Sarasota, to produce a fun and family-friendly outdoor concert. The patriotic programming includes everything from

tunes from Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, “The Wizard of Oz,” “How the West Was Won,” to more classical offerings including “A New Birth of Freedom” by Aaron Copland and an Armed Forces medley. In addition to America’s musical idols, Sarasota’s own “American Idol” Syesha Mercado will be a featured soloist with the orchestra and sing such vocal pyrotechnics as “Skyfall” (from the James Bond film “Skyfall”), “Fever” (popularized by Peggy Lee), the Etta James standard “At Last,” “One Rock and Roll Too Many” (from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Starlight Express”) and “Listen” (from the musical “Dreamgirls,” which Mercado performed in during the 20092010 national tour).

som. A freshman at the State College of Florida Collegiate School, in Bradenton, Folsom won the orchestra’s singing competition, “Anthem Idol,” to earn the honor of opening the concert with the national anthem.

“My job is to deliver things the audience hasn’t heard like they would with an orchestra,” says Lane. “It’s really fun music, and for an outdoor setting it’s giving the audience a new sound they’re not used to hearing, like an Elvis or Stevie Wonder medley.”

Lane says that he and the orchestra learned a lot last year playing in the open air at the ballpark. The Pops conductor, who is in his 11th season with the orchestra, enjoys the different perspective playing in a ballpark affords. The orchestra is situated on a stage on the third baseline, so everyone in the stands can see all 40-plus members of the orchestra.

As soon as the Sarasota Orchestra musicians arrived at Ed Smith Stadium last week, they started tuning and playing their respective instruments with trombonist Brad Williams, middle, getting into the sporting spirit and playing the “Charge” fanfare heard at most baseball games.

From the angle of the stage to the closing fireworks finale, Joslyn has to ensure every aspect is in perfect harmony.

“My main focus is helping plan programs and engage all the guest artists and conductors,” says Joslyn. “I book all the performance venues, execute all the contracts and oversee the staff who manages the day-to-day operations

of the orchestra.”

Armed with a notepad and calendar that never leave her side, Joslyn organizes the staff’s game plan for the day of the concert.

Her crew will arrive at Ed Smith Stadium around 7 a.m. to wheel the stage to the perimeter of the field, set up the orchestra’s seating and equipment and, most importantly, set up the 40-plus microphones for each individual musician. Once the acoustics are as close to concert hall quality as possible, then the explosives

expert will set up the fireworks for the closing of the concert.

And even though a year’s worth of planning goes into a few hours of musical entertainment, Lane and Joslyn look forward to the challenge.

“It’s a great venue, and once you know what works, we’re ready to do it again,” says Joslyn.

“The sound we had last year was a good experience, and everyone in the stadium could hear everything. There wasn’t a bad seat in the house.”

Created from a joint collaboration between the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, the Sarasota County Library System and Sarasota County Schools, this festival, held May 2, is the latest iteration of the YouthArts Fest.

The YouthArts Fest was created in 2011 to showcase the arts education via the music and performing ensembles from schools.

The goal was to remind the Sarasota County community of the importance of arts education.

Now the festival has been given a new name and a new mission, to not only advocate for arts education but to serve as the reincarnation of two festivals: Arts Day and the Reading Festival.

“When I joined the Arts Council in 2010,” says Jim Shirley, executive director of the Arts and Cultural Alliance, “one of the things that I looked at was that somewhere along the way we needed to foster a public celebration of arts and culture. At the time we had no money to do that.”

Funding was the main reason the two arts and cultural festivals disappeared, Shirley said. Arts Day, started in 1990, featured performances from all of the major art organizations in town

every January. According to Shirley it stopped after 2008 due to a lack of leadership and interest.

The Reading Festival, started in 1998, was a book fair and summit that brought book-lovers to the campus of New College of Florida. The Reading Festival ended after 2007.

InspireSarasota! seeks to fill the arts and culture void produced by those losses by building on the foundation of YouthArts Fest.

“My goal all along was that if we could build a strong enough foundation in the community through the schools, the libraries and families, then we’re going to have a foundation for a big public festival for the arts and to bring it back,” Shirley says.

This year is a transition year for the festival, so the core of this year’s lineup remains performances from school ensembles.

Shirley envisions the one-day festival growing each year with more adult and literary offerings, and he hopes to make it a weeklong cultural event each November.

“We’re going to work on building this into a big public festival celebrating arts and culture in our region,” Shirley says. “We see it as something down the road that will involve our local community and areas outside of Sarasota. We’ll be bigger next year, and in five years this will be a major, major event in our community.”

Animal-lovers seek companionship Animals, as animal-lovers know, are people too. (And people are the craziest animals.) Christian O’Reilly’s “Chapatti,” at Florida Studio Theatre, is about two elderly animal-lovers who find each other in contemporary Dublin. They’ve both shut down their beastly needs. But that never works for long.

Betty (Susan Greenhill) is a refugee from a bad marriage and a world champion cat lady. Dan (Colin Lane) is the dog devotee.

He’s still mourning a lost love, though his stray terrier, Chapatti, keeps him tethered to this earth. Dan plans to find his mutt a good home, do himself in and join his darling angel in the great beyond. But their mutual love of furry friends brings Betty and Dan together — in a vet’s office, naturally.

Complications ensue and Dan misses his final exit. Betty wants to keep it that way. She’s head over heels for this still-virile former

laborer. She wants Dan to choose love and life and her — and sets a scheme in motion.

Kate Alexander directs with a light touch. But there’s hard bone beneath the soft skin. In the play’s inventive structure, Dan and Betty tell their tales while the action happens. It’s like two first-person short stories going on at once. It works. But it takes a deft director’s hand to make it work — and two fine actors, of course.

Greenhill’s Betty brims with girlish, giddy exuberance and easy laughter — which goes through Dan’s veins like a drug. Lane’s character is gobsmacked but not mean. Dan describes himself as a “miserable bastard,” but he’s not a bastard at all, just miserable. Lane ducks the lovable curmudgeon cliché and keeps it real.

O’Reilly steers a middle course between sitcom cuteness and a Samuel Beckett-style obsession with last things. His poetic, witty, well-written play springs a few surprises. The play’s heart should not surprise.

Old people exist. There’s intelligence, memory, feeling and wit behind their eyes. The rest of us should look them in the eyes.

Ignore the candles on the birthday cake and you’ll meet some interesting characters, like Betty and Dan. You’ll enjoy their company, and enjoy this play. After seeing this improbable, late-blooming romance, be sure to pet your dog and call your parents.

The merry, merry month of May: Part one It seems like only yesterday that the YMCA Foundation’s “Going for the Gold” gala on the first Saturday in May marked the end of the Sarasota social season.

Foundation President Karin Gustafson and board member Bonnie Kaplan created it in 1992.

Karin says they picked that date “hoping that there were enough Y supporters who would attend a black tie-optional event … mostly out of respect to other organizations that had big events and at a time when you couldn’t expect people to be out in black tie every other night.”

The YMCA Foundation event has become one of Sarasota’s most successful and longest running, raising $8.2 million to date.

CHRISTOPHER AND DIANE HOW THE COUPLE MET

Christopher Marsh and Diane Moore met in middle school while attending the Out-ofDoor Academy. Remaining friends in high school, Chris stayed at ODA, while Diane attended the IB program at Riverview High School. During college, Chris and Diane reunited at a Western-themed debutante party over Thanksgiving break in Sarasota. A few weeks later they played golf with friends and sparks flew.

They continued to date long distance in college and following graduation.

THE PROPOSAL

The couple got engaged Oct. 19, 2013. Chris proposed to Diane in a helicopter over the Statue of Liberty, in New York.

Diane took a train from Washington, D.C., to visit Chris for the weekend. The couple played squash at the Yale Club in the morning, a sport that Diane introduced Chris to when they started dating. For a long time they had discussed taking a helicopter tour of New York and decided to try it after squash. Little did Diane know, Chris had the engagement ring in his gym bag. The engaged couple met friends for dinner afterward in the East Village.

THE WEDDING

The wedding ceremony was held March 14, at First Presbyterian Church. The church is significant to the bride because she was baptized and confirmed in the church. The bride’s mother, Ann Moore, has served as a deacon at the church, and her father, Rogers Moore, has served as a deacon and an elder in the church. The wedding was officiated by Rev. Glen Bell.

After exiting the church through a cloud of bubbles, the couple was surprised to find a white basket on the stairs of the church with two white peace doves that they released in the air.

The wedding had a nautical theme with navy, white and coral as the featured colors.

Guests were transported via the Sarasota Trolley to the reception at Sarasota Yacht Club, where guests were greeted with a cocktail hour featuring a pianist and vio-

linist. A spirited bridal party dressed in fun accessories such as captain’s hats and boas and sunglasses for the ladies entered the room when the wedding party was announced.

Guests then enjoyed a surf and turf dinner followed by a night of dancing.

THE HONEYMOON

The couple honeymooned in Hawaii on the island of Kauai.

Chris and Diane sailed up the Na Pali coast and snorkeled off the side of the boat and played golf at Makai Golf Club in Princeville. And Diane learned to surf and stand-up paddleboard on the trip, which was important to the groom, a passionate surfer.
