I

t was almost a decade ago when the Manzano brothers, Alejandro, Fabian and Daniel, collided with pop star Rihanna in their father’s Sarasota garage.

Sort of.

The Manzanos, brothers behind Boyce Avenue, a melody-infused ’90s-style alternative rock band, produced a homemade video with a camcorder playing a cover of Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella.” It was

the day before she performed it at the Video Music Awards in 2007.

A viral hit on YouTube, mostly overseas, the video was the impetus for what Boyce Avenue has since turned into a notable music business anomaly: Sustained success from shunning industry norms, such as not living in a major music city, not recording under strict control of record companies and not using terrestrial radio to find an audience.

“Our whole model and mindset,” says guitarist and backup vocalist Fabian Manzano, 31, “is

to embrace all the changes in the industry for the positive.”

More counterintuitive triumphs: The band’s concerts draw throngs of crowds everywhere from the Philippines to Hong Kong to London, but the brothers are mostly anonymous in Sarasota, where they live and grew up.

While others have had limited success with variations of the YouTube-first model, Boyce Avenue has flourished with it. Their YouTube channel, through late April, had 8.2 million subscribers, and their videos had been

viewed an eye-popping 2.54 billion times. The band has 3 million Facebook likes and 219,000 Instagram followers. About 10% to 15% of the band’s revenues come from ads it sells of YouTube. The rest is from tours, merchandise and digital album and single sales via iTunes, Pandora and other streaming sites.

Boyce Avenue’s latest attempt at an anti-industry standard success is its new album, with original songs. Aptly named “Road Less Traveled,” it was released April 15. “We are very much the

type of people who just like to jump right in and try things,” Fabian Manzano says.

The first phase of trying new things was the YouTube strategy.

Boyce Avenue has covered more than 60 hit songs on YouTube over the last decade, since “Umbrella.”

The covers, for which the band pays copyright fees, helped create a robust digital following.

With the YouTube success, the band hit the road. It has gone on tour at least a dozen times in Europe, and has also played shows in Mexico, Dubai and Jakarta, among other exotic locales. It took at least six tours, says Fabian Manzano, to make a profit from the road, playing around with the formula of gear, musicians and travel versus ticket and memorabilia sales. A two-month North American tour, from Seattle to Orlando, kicks off in September.

The online approach worked so well that in 2010, officials with record label Universal Republic approached Boyce Avenue about a contract for an original-songs album. The band signed on. But its members struggled under the lack of freedom in a big company, and bought out their contract in 2011.

The brothers went back to the YouTube-cover strategy, mixed in with original recordings they produced on their own. That

strategy continues today, with high volume, in songs and videos, if not sound, being a key component. “The name of the game for us is to produce as much quality content as possible,” Fabian Manzano says.

To facilitate that, the band recently made a mid-six figure investment in the quality side: It bought a house in Sarasota, off Clark Road, and turned it into a high-end, high-tech recording studio. The band added about 1,000 square feet to the house, and the studio includes ceilings three times thicker than normal and walls filled with sand and concrete for extra sound protection. The décor is modern with a California vibe. Says Manzano: “We wanted it be warm and inviting.”

The counterintuitive music industry strategy wasn’t the plan in the beginning. At first, in 2005, the band did things the old-fashioned way: played bars in a college town (Gainesville) for $150 a show.

Fabian and Alejandro were students at University of Florida back then, and Daniel, a Harvard Law grad, was in a post-graduate program. The YouTube idea was tryit-and-see, not a grand plan.

“In the beginning it was a hobby,” Manzano says. “We didn’t start out wanting to be rock stars.”

To prepare for the show, CFAS put out a call for furniture donations, and Peterson says she was impressed with the response.

Included in the more than 50 pieces that will be on display and for sale is a Heywood Wakefield desk, a Charles Rennie Mackintosh gateleg folding table and four pieces from the Paul Rudolph Heritage Foundation.

Peterson says she hopes people will gain an appreciation for Sarasota’s place in the modern architecture canon, and maybe they’ll even take a piece home for themselves.

“There are some really incredible pieces,” she says. “We want people to love them as much as we do.”

h en The Modern Show kicks off this Friday and Saturday, the McCulloch Pavillion will look a lot like it did when it first opened in 1960.

Back then, it was called the Scott Building, and it served as the showroom for the Barkus Furniture Co. With its large glass storefront, flat roof and open floor plan, the single-story, midcentury modern commercial structure was typical of its time, often referred to as the Sarasota School of Architecture.

Designed by William Rupp and Joseph Farrell, the building was focused on functionality — catching the eye of passing motorists with its bold features and enticing pedestrians with its in-store displays.

Today, the building is home to the Center for Architecture Sarasota, a nonprofit organization founded in 2013 with the goal of preserving — and educating the public on — the cultural impact of Sarasota’s architectural history.

And for its inaugural fundraising event since opening its renovated doors last year, the organization wanted to pay homage to its roots in modernism.

For two days, it will host The Modern Show, featuring a midcentury modern furniture, décor and art showcase and sale, guest lectures on modern design and tours of mid-century homes by notable architects Paul Rudolph, Ralph Twitchell and Victor Lundy — there’s even a vintage fashion show. Guests can learn about local architects, admire the collection and even take a step back in time. The donated furniture will be staged in the gallery floor — much like it would’ve been 50 years ago.

Cynthia Peterson, CFAS board chair, says the event is a perfect fit for the organization and its mission.

“We wanted to do something a little different for our first fundraiser,” she says. “I wanted to focus on modernism in Sarasota, because we have such a legacy of that — not just the architects and buildings, but also furniture, décor and art. It’s such an interesting period. Builders and designers were really experimenting with new things.”

Part of the appeal of this style of architecture and design, she says, is its historical significance. After World War II, the surge of veterans returning home and starting families created a housing boom, and a new style of architecture emerged to meet the demand, as well as a new style of furniture to outfit the homes. Gone were the ornate stylings of the past, in favor of clean lines, simple functionality and playful creativity.

The new style was more than just a product of necessity; it was a reflection of evolving American culture and ideals, which Peterson says contributes to its sustained appeal and resurgence.

“You had these new, modern houses,” she says. “You couldn’t fill them with Victorian furni-

‘Josephine’ brings an icon to life JUNE LEBELL MUSIC CRITIC

Josephine Baker’s life should make great fodder for a Broadway musical. Baker was one of the great entertainers of the 20th century. Married numerous times, she always managed to maintain her independence. She was purportedly photographed more than any superstar of her generation. She worked successfully for the French Resistance.

And, having a warm, nurturing side and being unable to bear children of her own, she adopted nearly a dozen orphans.

Making her story even better for the stage were the downsides that make for real theater. She left her lovers, sometimes to her own emotional detriment. Her mother exploded her childhood dreams, instilling a sense of failure. And she never found the fortune and fame she enjoyed in Europe in her home country.

With all this wonderful stage baggage, one would think “Josephine,” the musical, would be a huge success. But the show, which just had its world premiere at the Asolo Repertory Theatre, with dreams of making it big on Broadway, falls short of the blazing spotlights in which it tries so hard to shine.

It’s not from lack of talent.

The star-studded, multi-awardwinning cast is as strong as any you could want. Deborah Cox, in the title role, is strong, energetic and drop-dead gorgeous.

Kevin Earley, her on-again, off-again friend, confidante

and wannabe lover, Jo Bouillon, makes a perfect foil, as he sings and dances his way from the orchestra, where he’s the acting conductor (the real conductor, Sinai Tabak, is in the bowels of the pit, until the final bow), to the stage, drifting in and out of Josephine’s rocky life with grace.

Mark Campbell, who plays both Prince Gustav VI of Sweden and the notorious Nazi, Hermann Goering, is rich-voiced, and suitably cool or dastardly, depending on the wig he’s wearing at the time.

The young, vivacious Tori Bates is sprightly and buoyant as the young Josephine. She chases her older self around, leaving shadows of her difficult childhood. Her often annoying presence eventually incorporates into a fully formed, Freudian adult, singing and dancing her way into our hearts, like Shirley Temple in a nightmare.

Michael Keyloun as Sven, with his lover JouJou (Matthew McGee), form a funny, occasionally touching secondary love interest, singing, dancing and prancing through this convoluted cartoon of a show.

Then there’s Lynette DuPree, whose Bricktop just about steals the show with a belting voice and mesmerizing presence that take over every moment she’s on stage. And thereby hangs the problem with “Josephine.”

Try as he may, director/choreographer Joey McKneely, who made such a hit with his recent revival of “West Side Story” at the Asolo, just couldn’t quite

make a silk purse of this sow’s ear of a show he was given by composer Stephen Dorff, lyricist John Bettis and librettists Ellen Weston and Mark Hampton.

“Josephine” is a caricature of itself. A comic book with pretensions of being a soulful retelling of an important life. It leaves us with all the gloss and glitz, but none of the guts or heart.

Every time we come close to real emotion, we’re confronted with dancing girls and strutting page boys breaking the mood.

There’s something for everyone in “Josephine.” Too much, in fact. If you’re in the minority, just wait. Your joke will come.

Even singers get the brunt of a joust or two: “What do you see when you look up a soprano’s skirt?” we’re asked. “A tenor,” we’re told, and not even given time to boo or groan.

tone down the original nudity on display at the Follies Bergére, the dancers wear mesh body stockings that sag here, gap there and are definitely unglamorous.

Still, the costumes, and scenic designer Paul Tate dePoo III’s Erte-sculpted sets, are magnificent and worth the ticket price.

“Josephine” is a musical, but here, again, there are problems.

While Steve Orich’s arrangements are deft, Dorff’s songs are distinctly derivative. Every song sounds like something from an old Broadway ghost — “Les Miz,” “Do I Hear a Waltz,” “Carousel,” “Evita,” “A Chorus Line,” “Dream Girls” — all present to entertain us, no matter what the stage situation.

Much like its titular character, “Josephine” has its problems, starting with the characters’ lack of real personality. It’s glitzy, glossy entertainment with a great cast, but it needs one important ingredient: soul.

Last year, co-chairs Merrill Bonder, Dan Dannheisser, Mitchell Epstein and Mike Hagan decided to switch things up and host the event on Derby Day — merging the event with the festivities surrounding the Kentucky Derby. It was a hit last year, and to gussy things up even further, it was hosted at The RitzCarlton, Sarasota. More than 400 guests attended this year’s “An Unbridled Evening for the Kids” celebrating 25 years — dressed in their Kentucky finest, including hats so elabroate, you would have thought you were at Churchill Downs.
