The Sarasota Ballet

OK. So these might not be actual jewels, but this production by the Sarasota Ballet is a rare holiday gift all its own. Performing this ballet, which was created by iconic choreographer George Balanchine in 1967, is a rare opportunity and is considered a crowning achievement for a ballet company. Consisting of three pieces — “Emeralds,” “Rubies” and “Diamonds” — the ballet is only performed in its entirety with special permission from the George Balanchine Trust. Noted for being technically difficult and one of the first abstract multi-act ballets, “Jewels” is a rarely seen gem and a perfect way to celebrate the holidays.

Diamonds are forever — this opportunity comes but once.

Ah, the holidays. It’s the best time of year for giving, catching up with loved ones — and reminding kids today just how great things used to be. Let’s face it: They just don’t make performers like they used to. If Robert is the last Kardashian you caught up with, it might be time to turn back the clock with Plump Sisters Productions. This newly formed drag duo, created

by Parker Lawhorne and Kelly Leissler, puts the blast in blastfrom-the-past. Featuring original music, jokes and choreography, they call back to the days when Judy Garland and Carol Burnett reigned supreme. Set in World-War-II-era Germany, this double-entendre-heavy duo hosts a Christmas show sure to leave you laughing.

As it turns out, Santa really does keep a list. Maybe you’ve found yourself on the not-so-nice list this year. Why turn back now?

Don’t despair; Black Diamond Burlesque has made sure you’re not doomed to a lump-ofcoal-Christmas this year. Its holiday-themed performance, “Unwrapped,” celebrates the season’s festivities in its own tantalizing, Vaudevillian-style burlesque show. Special guests Margaux Royale, Mr. Incredible and Paddy O’Chair will add some heat to the holidays.

The Manatee Players

Imagination is at the crux of this Christmas classic from the get-go. At the urge of his guardian angel, George Bailey, who is convinced his life has no purpose, is forced to imagine what his hometown of Bedford Falls would be like if he’d never been born. The Manatee Players takes it a step further with Joe Landry’s adaptation, which stages the story as a 1940s radio broadcast. Actors read the script in their respective characters’ voices, tasking the audience with filling in the details. It’s a parable of an everyday hero with a happy ending — and it’s a holiday staple for a reason.

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe

In 1961, poet, playwright and social activist Langston Hughes re-imagined the Nativity story through the African American lens, incorporating gospel, jazz, blues and modern and African dance to tell the biblical story in a new way. It has since become a Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe holiday tradition. The story takes an African American perspective, but its high-energy, soulful storytelling and message of unity make it a show for everyone.

“Deck the Halls” is designed to appeal to the way families celebrate the holidays in Florida.

When Florida Studio Theatre actor, playwright, teaching artist and Write-A-Play Program Coordinator Patrick A. Jackson and Director of Children’s Theater Caroline Kaiser teamed up to develop the theater’s holiday production, “Deck The Halls,” they wanted to offer local families a show that reflected the season as Floridians know it.

“The classics, like ‘The Nutcracker’ and ‘A Christmas Carol’ are great,” says Jackson. “But we wanted something new and specific to what the holidays are like in Florida. It’s important for kids and families here to feel proud of where they’re from and to see something that reflects their experiences.”

performance, which is part of FST’s new children’s theater series, features song, dance, jokes and sketches — even some improv — all with a local focus.

Being a variety show, the production doesn’t have a narrative arc. Rather, it follows a group of elves, Jingle and Jangle, who, along with their friends, Louie, Pickles and Pepper, are debuting their traveling show in Sarasota.

“Deck the Halls” features both Hanukkah and Christmas themes, using fan-favorite holiday songs with the lyrics modified to relate to Florida and Sarasota. The elves are dressed not in North Polegarb, but in their beach-day best, and improv elements and singalongs encourage attendees to participate in the fun.

Director Jason Cannon says the show has come with a particular set of challenges.

“The inspiration is based in those classic Dean Martin-style shows,” says Cannon. “It’s a very particular style of storytelling.

It’s presentational, as opposed to plot-based, but it’s still honest.

These elves have to really believe in the holidays. When young actors are dealing with honesty or truth in a scene, they’re not usually dressed as an elf, attempting to appeal to both children and adults.”

Cannon has worked with the actors, who are professional trainees at Florida Studio Theatre, to strike the right balance in their appeal. The idea is to entertain the children while offering a more sophisticated layer for the adults.

“You want there to be something for everyone,” says Cannon.

“But it’s not about talking down to the children or patronizing them.

DEC. 16 In 1948, renowned Chilean poet and politician Pablo Neruda is forced into hiding when he denounces the government for betraying the Communist Party.

A tenacious police inspector is assigned to find and arrest Neruda. The cat-and-mouse game is told from two sides simultaneously, and one has to wonder if Neruda is pulling the strings.

Starring Luis Gnecco and Gael Garcia Bernal. Directed by Pablo Larrain.

‘JACKIE’

DEC. 21 Natalie Portman portrays first lady Jacqueline Kennedy in the days immediately following the assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy. The film is shot from her point of view as she endeavors to balance dignity with enormous loss. The trailer is riveting — and excruciatingly heartbreaking. Portman’s performance has Oscar written all over it, as does Pablo Larrain’s direction.

‘FENCES’

DEC. 25 Viola Davis and Denzel Washington reprise their Tony Award-winning roles as a couple coping with race relations in the 1950s. But moreover, it’s the story of one man’s obsession with what he deserves clouding his appreciation for what he has.

Peppered with humor and joy, it’s the perfect holiday film. In Washington’s third directorial effort, written by Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright August Wilson, expect exceptional acting and numerous Oscar nods.

‘TONI ERDMANN’

DEC. 25 Brace yourself. This GermanAustrian dramedy is nearly three hours long, but rumor has it that it never drags. The relationship between a quirky father (Peter Simonischek) and his estranged daughter (Sandra Huller) is hilariously depicted as the father tries to inject humor into her joyless life. The film received rave reviews at Cannes this year, and director Maren Ade received the Fipresci Prize.

‘LIVE BY NIGHT’

DEC. 25 LIMITED RELEASE; JAN. 13 WIDE RELEASE “I went away a soldier and came home an outlaw.” This is how gangster Joe Coughlin describes himself in this crime drama set during Prohibition. When Joe becomes a Tampa rum-runner, he discovers that going against his moral code comes at a great price. Super cool trailer, cast and cinematography are definitely a draw. Ben Affleck scripts, stars and directs. Can’t miss.

‘PATERSON’

DEC. 28 Adam Driver portrays a poet/bus driver in present day Paterson, N.J. Over the course of one week, we watch as personal setbacks evolve into inspiration for him and his beloved wife. Quiet punk Jim Jarmusch scripts and directs this character-driven piece being described as “a movie for everyone.”

Scaling Down NICK FRIEDMAN A+E MANAGING EDITOR

For Dutch-born American sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp, gates are more than just a tool to mark an entryway. He sees beauty, both in what they represent and what they can be as a work of art.

The sculptor, who typically works in large-scale installations, fountains and custom hydraulic gates, will open his first solo show in Sarasota this Friday at Alfstad& Contemporary. The exhibit features sketches, paintings and small-scale bronze sculptures of his gates.

Van de Bovenkamp says “Gateways” will help viewers follow his process from conception to reality. We spoke with him about scale, permanence and the beauty of gateways.

“IN COLLEGE, I had saved enough money to start my own studio in the basement of a house I was renting. I began making little sculptures from coathangers. I was asked to do a fountain for the windows at Tiffany’s on Fifth Avenue. They were selling permanence, so I thought I should make something that would destroy itself in three weeks. I made fountains of pieces of metal shelving I found

on street, and I put the beautiful diamond jewelry in it. The fountain began to rust, and the water became like a brown soup.

The more the fountain deteriorated, the more beautiful and permanent the jewelry became by comparison.

“PEOPLE ASKED if I could make a fountain that would last, so I made a series of fountains in copper and brass. Eventually I had 20 assistants and was selling fountains around world. I did very well with those.

“I LIKE to reinvent my work, so I rented another studio and began to make sculptures. It was a slow road to success. I would load my works onto a trailer, drive all night to install them in a show, and in three weeks, I’d go pick them up. I would sell a little here there. Lo and behold, I’m 78, and my career is still expanding.

“IN THE Netherlands, it’s very flat, and when you drive on the highway, you can see these huge

flat areas, and instead of fences, the cows are separated by little ditches. There are gates at the walkway where the cows can cross, and I was fascinated by the idea of having a gate but no fence.

“A GATE can be more than utilitarian. It’s a symbol for leaving a public space and entering a nonpublic one. It can also tell a little bit about the person who lives beyond the gate. It doesn’t have to be just a generic, impersonal thing. I use gates to create unique works of art.

“LARGE SCULPTURES can serve a few purposes. First, they’re a visual landmark for a building. They also help humanize the scale. When you walk up to a building that’s 60 stories high, you feel 3 feet tall. But a 20-foot sculpture helps you relate to the building’s scale. It interrupts you for a moment and makes you stop and think.

“THIS SHOW features my small works. Most of them are done in bronze. Stainless steel is good for outdoor sculptures, because it’s basically indestructible.

But when it’s on a small scale, it’s very hard to bend. Bronze is soft enough to bend easily. All my work is curved to reflect the condition of nature. People have seen my large sculptures — ones I have to transport on a flatbed truck. Now they can see the smaller side of my work.”

A sold-out performance, erupting with soul EDWARD ALLEY MUSIC CRITIC

At approximately 5:30 last Sunday afternoon, an eruption of sound occurred at the Sarasota Opera House. It was the outpouring of applause and cheers for a completely soldout performance of “Too Hot to Handel,” presented by the Gloria Musicae Singers and West Coast Black Theatre Troupe.

“Too Hot to Handel” — a contemporary gospel, jazz and Motown version of Handel’s “Messiah” was conceived by Marin Alsop, conductor of the Baltimore Symphony, and arranged by Bob Christianson and Gary Anderson some 25 years ago. An instant hit, it has since been performed annually for the past 15 years in cities across the United States.

Bringing it to Sarasota was the idea of Joseph Holt, artistic director of Gloria Musicae.

Being the champion of collaboration that he is, he immediately sought a partnership with Nate Jacobs and the West Coast Black Theater Troupe.

“Too Hot to Handel” uses Handel’s text and melodies, but sets them in an inspired combination of orchestral and choral arrangements that varies from full-blown gospel writing to cool jazz, bebop and Motown beat, with all of it delivered in an out-and-out tribute to soul music everywhere.

I heard some jazz sounds of Stan Kenton, cool Gerry Mulligan, and real down-home

gospel, together with soaring voices that filled the Sarasota Opera House, but didn’t overwhelm with volume. Christianson and Anderson substituted syncopated rhythms for most of Handel’s rapidly moving coloratura passages, with good results.

Soloists included Syreeta Banks, Sherwood Davis, Samone Hicks, Nate Jacobs, Elaine Mayo and Leon Pitts from WBTT, and Amy Connors from Gloria Musicae. They were joined by a combined chorus of almost 50 voices from Gloria Musicae and WBTT, accompanied by the “Gloria Musicae Orchestra” (primarily members of the Sarasota Orchestra), augmented by six saxophones, a Hammond

B-3 organ, Andrew Lapp’s piano, and George Nickson presiding at the drum set, who gave us a percussive and persuasive preview of the “Hallelujah Chorus,” using all the drums he could reach.

All the soloists were impressive in their recitatives and arias, each of which had been enhanced with both rhythm and orchestral color. Nate Jacobs’ soaring tenor virtually stole the show at the start with “Comfort Ye” and “Every Valley,” which had a rolling chorus part added to the aria.

This certainly

convinced all of us that this was in no way our mother’s “Messiah” — and happily so.

Each soloist had a unique style, and the musical setting of their numbers added emphasis to the traditional text. Elaine Mayo gave us a low, dark and smokyvoiced rendering of “But Who May Abide…” accompanied by smooth reed sounds with just a bit of bebop in their flavor.

Amy Jo Connors’ stirring gospel rendition of “He Shall Feed His Flock,” with driving rhythm and chorus, prepared everyone for the final numbers: “His Yoke is Easy,” with virtuosic bass playing by John Miller, and

the finale, “Hallelujah Chorus,” which everyone was awaiting.

It was a forceful, driving, full-out gospel hand-clapping celebration of everything this wonderful work has to offer.

The audience could not stop applauding, and they were rewarded with a reprise of the final soul-lifting moments.

It was reported that a couple of people left early in the performance, saying that “It was a travesty of Messiah!” Not so ... Handel, with his flair for ornamentation and improvisation, would have loved it.

And perhaps “Too Hot to Handel” could become an annual visitor.

‘Six Women with Brain Death’ takes audiences on a wild ride MARTY FUGATE

Imagine a ruined Earth in the far-distant future. An alien archaeological expedition combs through the ruins and wreckage. After stuffing their saucer with recordings of Frank Zappa’s “200 Motels,” Napoleon XIV’s “They’re Coming to Take Me Away,” and several metric tons of “National Enquirer” clippings, they return to their home world. If said aliens then decided to create a musical about the experience of American women in the late 20th century, it would probably resemble Mark Houston’s “Six Women with Brain Death,” the latest offering at Venice Theatre.

Houston, who wrote the music and lyrics, and his eight collaborators, who wrote the script, violate every theatrical rule conceivable. They violate rules I didn’t know existed until I noticed their absence.

There’s no plot. No protagonist or story arc.

Dramatic tension? An all-islost moment? Hero’s journey?

No, no, and no.

Great. Now that we’ve established what’s missing, what’s actually there?

The titular six women, for starters. (Only five actresses are on stage. The sixth is a blow-up doll.)

And the women sing: A blonde bombshell’s severed head sings a country song about spiritual growth; an alcoholic shut-in has a duel and a duet with a soap opera character who comes out of her large-screen TV; a compulsive reader is burned at the stake on a bonfire of books — while singing of the futility of literacy.

All five (or six) unnamed characters sing of Barbie and Ken’s sexual permutations.

All that — and divorce, rebellious children, booze, high-school reunions and

the idiocy of tabloids and TV, besides.

Director Kelly Woodland straps you in and takes you on the switchback turns of a wild funhouse ride. Alison Prouty, Nancy Denton, Liz Pascoe, Ariella Corinne Pizarro, Morgan Graves and Jane Livingston are the six actors leaping out at you along the way. One, I assume, stays offstage and does voiceover work for the blow-up doll. Who? Your guess is as good as mine.

The ride roars on, thanks to a lot of talent. Eli Schildkraut delivers excellent music direction; Brian Finnerty’s cho-

reography is a fun parody of schlocky musical conventions.

Nicholas Hartman’s costumes are a rummage sale of failed expectations. Gary Thornsberry’s set is a shabby equivalent of Pee Wee’s Playhouse.

OK, great. Much cleverness, abundant talent. Which adds up to … what?

Good question.

The play’s full, jaw-breaking title is: “Six Women with Brain Death, or Expiring Minds Want to Know.” “The National Enquirer” inspires the play’s action like holy writ. Bigfoot, aliens, two-headed babies.

A Florida man did this, a

Florida man did that. You get the picture.

From one perspective, all that tacky Americana is an easy target for cheap parody. A sneer at trailer-park humanity.

A slap at stupid people, who aren’t like us.

From another perspective, the play does more than sneer.

There’s a sense of joy behind the mockery, which I’ll explain with one more otherworldly comparison. Not a joke, this time.

Science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick was obsessed with eruptions of divine grace in the common, coarse, mundane and stupid.

Houston and his collaborators share a similar obsession.

Illogical as it may seem, their unnamed characters have a relentless, life-affirming joy.

The characters’ lives are full of crap, lies, delusions, loss and emptiness.

Logically, they should just give up.

But they sing anyway.

t was clear from a brief interaction in the women’s room of the Sarasota Yacht Club that Janice Kunkel was worried.

The Friends of the Sarasota Ballet president wasn’t sure what to expect of her revamped holiday fundraiser. The event was a luncheon last year, but the organization decided to make this year’s Dec. 5 event, “A ‘Jeweled’ Holiday Soiree,” an evening of dinner and dancing. The theme was based on the company’s upcoming production of Balanchine’s “Jewels” on Dec. 16 and 17.

She was afraid that nobody would stay to bust a move, but all it took was the courage of a few Sarasota Ballet company members and friends to get some supporters out onto the dance floor. PAGE 2

The evening began with a cocktail hour, during which guests mixed and mingled while perusing a table of auction items, ranging from four rounds of golf at University Golf Club to a sunset cruise for eight on a private yacht. After being seated and savoring their entrees, guests watched a video about Joe Volpe, executive director of The Sarasota Ballet, who was honored for his service to the company and his more than 40 years of work in the performing arts world (including 16 years as the general manager of the Metropolitan Opera).

After the recognition ceremony, many guests paired up and hit the dance floor to sway, twirl and even cha cha to the sounds of The Royz Band.

It seems Kunkel had nothing to worry about after all.

Joe Volpe, executive director for the Sarasota Ballet, was honored at the ballet’s “A Jeweled Holiday Soirée” Dec. 5 for his service to the company and the performing arts world at large. After receiving his award of recognition from Director Iain Webb, Volpe surprised everyone by singing a song that he wrote to honor outgoing Marketing and Development Director Janet Ginn. Laughter filled the room when he apologized mid-song for the choppiness — he wrote the song earlier that same day.

Jen Rust and 15 of her closest girlfriends enjoyed an intimate holiday soirée at the home of Rust’s boyfriend, Steve Johnson, in Tierra Verde on Dec. 10.

The tradition started last year as a white elephant party and grew to a dinner party this year that even featured a signature cocktail: White Christmas Sangria with cranberries and rosemary. Guests enjoyed the drink with light appetizers before savoring a meal of baked ziti and salad, all of which were made by Rust.

Beyond the Ball

There’s more to the debutante program than etiquette classes and Cinderella-style dances.

The word “debutante” tends to conjure images of long white gloves, large gowns and opulent balls fit for a Disney princess. Although the Sarasota Debutante Ball lives up to the lavish image, it’s the year-long program leading up to the main event that gives an added sense of purpose to an often-typecast tradition.

White-gowned young women began gracing the Sarasota social scene in 1981, when the Sarasota Debutante Program held its first deb ball. President Robin Serbin says that the early balls were similar to the stereotype — coming-out parties for the young women of the aristocratic class that served as a way for parents to introduce their daughters to society.

“It was all about money and who’s who,” Serbin says. “That’s what we’ve tried to dispel with our program, particularly since the time I got involved.”

Serbin says that since she started her term as president in 2005, the Sarasota Debutante Program has switched its focus to first looking at the girls and not their families. Debutantes are invited to join the program (there is no application process), and members of the selection team get recommendations from locals who have

been involved in the program in some capacity — past debutantes, their families and previous escorts.

The selection criteria is less economic and more about finding young women who are exceptional members of their community. Serbin says debutantes are female high school seniors in Sarasota and Manatee counties who do well academically, are involved in school and their community and who have outstanding moral character — whom she calls the “cream of the crop.”

To Serbin, the Sarasota Debutante Program is a means to not only honor these young women, but also to give them the skills they need to network and be successful in their future, whatever it might be. One of her favorite events is when past debutantes are invited to speak to the new debutantes in an open forum, in which questions regarding college and adult life are addressed.

Current debutantes can speak candidly about their curiosities and concerns about the upcoming new phase of their life.

Sarasota’s debutante season starts in January, when the new class is chosen and ends in December, with the Debutante Ball. Those in-between months are filled with events, such as the debutante invitational (an informational event for invitees), orientation and

moms’ social along with family-planned events that are organized by multiple families at once. These events are less formal social gatherings, but they all require a receiving line, a formal introduction and handwritten thank you notes afterward.

Although etiquette training and waltz classes are also an integral part of the debutante program, it’s the receiving lines, the thank you notes and the opportunity to meet commu-

nity members from two counties that Serbin finds the most relevant.

Past Sarasota debutante Donna Berlin, who’s also mother to 2014 Sarasota debutante Cameron Berlin, agrees. She believes that the professional training is something that wasn’t part of the program when she participated in the 1986-87 class, and she thinks the way it’s set up now allows girls the chance to have extra support during a time of big changes in their life.

“They provide a risk-free environment for kids to make that transition to young adults,” Berlin says. “You’re making a transition from high school to college, which can be scary, and they give you a bridge.”

Serbin says this transition is made easier because of the program’s communal nature.

“I’ve been so proud of how there doesn’t seem to be the cliquishness or the social divisions,” she says. “Everyone is on an even field.”
