Artists need to connect with viewers

BRAMWELL TOVEY is Sarasota Orchestra’s music director designate. On Oct. 30, he conducted “Tovey: The Adventure Begins,” a live concert at Sarasota Opera House. He describes it as an adventure indeed.

“The classical music community initially underestimated the pandemic,” he says.

“Like many at the time, we’d anticipated four weeks of interruption, and it turned out to be 18 months. We entered a brave new world where our principal audience was now online.

Orchestras worldwide were forced to adapt.

We made do with small ensembles and learned how to film our concerts for streaming video. But as good as it may get, a virtual concert is no substitute for the real thing.

“In all my travels, I’ve never met a single actor or musician who preferred the online version. They all missed being in the moment with an audience in the same room. I certainly did. And it’s hard to describe the feelings of liberation I had when I finally reconnected with an audience.

“For me, the return to live performance was ecstatic. This happened last July, before I came to Sarasota Orchestra. I conducted the New York Philharmonic in a partly covered venue in Vail, Colorado. After two years of pretty much nothing, it was quite extraordinary.

“I recently conducted Sarasota Orchestra in ‘The Adventure Begins’ at the Sarasota Opera House. It was my first concert for Sarasota Orchestra since the pandemic began and in my new role as music director.

It’s a big hall — and I’m happy to say we had a capacity audience that felt both thrilled and safe.”

But this breed of artist has recently gone through a severe audience withdrawal. The pandemic pulled the plug on live performance for more than a year. Just this fall have shows returned in earnest or looked more like a prepandemic existence, anyway.

We spoke to five area artistic directors about what that means to them. Our focus is on how it feels, not how they did it. Here’s what they had to say.

REBECCA HOPKINS is Florida Studio Theatre’s managing director. After a long hiatus, the March 24 opening of “Vintage Pop” marked FST’s first live show. Hopkins recalls how much that meant to her. And still does.

“I have no words to express the utter and complete joy I felt the first night FST reopened after being closed for an entire year,” she says. “It was a feeling I don’t think anyone who was there that night will ever forget — from the staff to the artists to the audience. And that feeling has stayed with us through the spring and summer.

LEYMIS BOLAÑOS WILMOTT is Sarasota Contemporary Dance’s artistic director. SCD returned to live performance in October 2020. It came back in full force with “Voices: Rising Choreographers” this October.

Wilmott describes it as “a peak experience.”

“Sarasota Contemporary Dance wasn’t entirely exiled from the real world in 2020 — but we were still very limited,” she says.

“Returning to the Cook Theatre for our ‘Voices: Rising Choreographers’ in October and performing for a decent-sized audience was a peak experience for all of us. It really felt like a homecoming — the Cook is such an intimate space, and there’s something familiar and magical about it. I think our dancers conveyed a sense of hope and possibility to our audience.

“This whole show was about the future. It put a spotlight on tomorrow’s dance makers and professional dancers. Jessica Obiedzinski and Sea Lee were our choreographers — they’re both SCB company members.

We also had a piece by Justice Rodriguez, a choreographer based in Miami. Their dances conveyed a sense of limitless potential, and I think that was deeply intentional. I think this show ignited hope in the audience. It was very cathartic for all of us and also a lot of fun.”

Although Sarasota Contemporary Dance restarted performances in the spring, it got to move back into Cook Theatre this fall.

IAIN WEBB is the director of Sarasota Ballet. In his stellar ballet career, he’s been both a dancer and an artistic director. He knows what it’s like to walk in a dancer’s shoes. As a result, Webb is all the more proud of the company’s return to the real world with its “New World” performance on Oct. 22.

“The pandemic hit the dance world particularly hard,” Webb says. “A dancer’s body is their instrument. An actor like Roddy McDowall might begin their career as a child prodigy at age 10 and continue well into his 70s. But a dancer has only a few short years to maintain their instrument.

“Dancers are athletes — and it’s tremendously difficult staying fit in isolation. The wrong kick might cause a disaster in a small apartment. But thanks to our amazing, generous supporters, we’re one of the few ballet companies who paid our dancers throughout their downtime and also fully covered their medical insurance. Our dancers also stayed in touch with our audience with a steady stream of online video clips.

“When the isolation finally ended, we did all we could to build their confidence. Our company knew they could come back together safely. Even so, the transition to studio rehearsals was tough, especially with everyone wearing a mask. But once rehearsals resumed, I was in awe. Despite their weeks of isolation, our dancers were still at an amazing level.

“Actually performing for a live audience was another hurdle. It takes a lot for anybody to go on stage and perform, and they had to get used to that again.

But they all did — and overcame any lingering stage fright. Our ‘New World’ program marked our return to the stage. It featured Martha Graham’s choreography of Aaron Copland’s ‘Appalachian Spring’ and a world premiere of ‘Sonatina’ by Ricardo Graziano, our resident choreographer. It was a blend of the old and new, and the love from our audience was flowing brightly. Our dancers came through with flying colors, and I have so much respect for what they accomplished. It’s good to be back.”

ANNE MORRISON is SaraSolo Productions’ artistic director. She says the company sharpened its virtual reality skills during the months of social distancing.

On Oct. 14, it returned to actual reality for its 2021 FallFest. According to Morrison, that was much more fun.

“Our exile from live performance was scary,” she says. “But because we celebrate solo theater artists, we had an easier time than large-cast theater companies. Switching to streaming video required many creative leaps, and that taught us many wonderful skills that we’ve taken back to live theater.

It still wasn’t an ideal experience.

“For solo theater artists, the audience is your scene partner. You play off their reactions, and that really shapes your performance.

There’s nothing like it. It felt weird performing for the single eye of a camera.

Going back to a live audience felt wonderful.

“We performed to a smaller house in a pop-up theater space. That was a great experience for our artists. All four were premiering new shows. Paula Broadwater did her new cabaret set, and the experience was invaluable to her. She’s accustomed to performing in theater spaces with all the bells and whistles. Her pop-up performance at SaraSolo proved that she could scale it back for an intimate cabaret space, like 54 Below in New York City, and still make it work.

“As I said, our SaraSolo FallFest audience was smaller and socially distanced.

A few of our fans are still scared of live theater.

“Fortunately, we’ve been able to film the FallFest shows. Starting in November, we’ll stream them for those who couldn’t be there. That’s one of the skills we learned during lockdown, and it’ll really help us broaden our audience.”

orn last year out of a pandemic-propelled move toward open-air entertainment, the Sarasota Orchestra’s free outdoor concert series was an instant hit with local audiences. Now the event is here to stay.

The second season of “On the Road with Sarasota Orchestra: Parks and Partners” runs Nov. 21 through April 24. It will include eight chamber music concerts, with ensembles performing on Sundays at area public parks and partner venues in Sarasota and Manatee counties.

Although the orchestra hosted limited indoor performances last season with stringed instruments, because those players could wear a mask while playing, the outdoor performances were planned as a way to give some of the wind and brass instruments a venue to play safely.

“We originally created the series in response to the pandemic, and the goal was to have our wind and brass musicians play in outdoor settings,” says Joseph McKenna, the president and CEO of the Sarasota Orchestra.

“The parks also offered an ideal setting for safe social distancing and an alternative option for patrons who did not feel comfortable attending live concerts indoors. The concerts received an overwhelmingly positive response.”

What ended up happening was the parks’ venues allowed the orchestra to reach audiences who might not have been previously familiar with the organization or its varied offerings, which range from large masterworks concerts to family-friendly

The 1949-founded, 76-member Sarasota Orchestra is the oldest continuing orchestra in Florida.

Each year, musicians perform more than 100 classical, pops and chamber music as well as community outreach concerts. The “Parks and Partners” series is just another example of the community outreach.

rag performance is pretty mainstream these days. Terry Guest’s “At the Wake of a Dead Drag Queen” recalls a fairly recent time when it wasn’t. It’s Urbanite Theatre’s first live production since the pandemic shutdown. It proves the edgy theater is as sharp as ever.

The time is probably the early 2010s. The place is a cramped nightclub in a small town in Georgia. It’s a coming-of-age story — more accurately, a not-coming-of-age story.

Courtney (Anthony Knighton on his driver’s license) is the play’s eponymous drag queen who has contracted AIDS in a rural backwater where lifesaving drug cocktails are hard to come by. Courtney is only 22 years old — and the clock stops at age 23.

Courtney (Donovan Session) is a Black performer who forms a backstage romance/friendship with Vickie (aka Hunter, portrayed by Shea Petersen), a white performer who’s also HIV positive and a drag newbie. The two share gossip and trade secrets. Courtney is “flamboyant” in a way that can still get you killed in the South. Vickie isn’t — except when on stage. One character thinks, “How can I play it safe?”

The other wonders, “What can I get away with?” Courtney pushes Vickie to take more risks and stop holding back. But Courtney’s clock is running down, and she’s trying to outrun it. In the end, that death sentence kills Courtney’s last chance of a real relationship. This is a very funny play, don’t get me wrong. But at heart, it’s a tragedy.

Director Damian Lockhart leans into the performative aspect of drag.

It’s a show within a show — and a down-and-dirty show at that.

Session initially portrays Courtney/Anthony as an unstoppable ball of energy. Courtney flirts, jokes and interacts with audience members — and dances up a storm. In Session’s portrayal, Courtney’s dance moves are clearly a form of denial. But death is what she’s denying.

Shea Petersen’s Vickie/Hunter character is a ball of insecurity, one who grew up in a strict fundamentalist household. Vickie’s in touch with her feminine side on stage. Backstage, she’s out of touch.

This analysis sounds a sociology lecture. But “At the Wake of a Dead Drag Queen” is more like a party.

A host of talents, including scenic designer Jeff Webber, costume designer David Covach and wig designer Susan Haldeman, do a great job pulling you into this world.

And that’s an accurate reflection of what you’ll experience at Urbanite.

Guest’s play really is a hall of mirrors dealing with self-image and the presentation of self. In the world according to Guest, identity is not a binary equation of straight/gay or white/Black. It’s the more like algebra: a complicated derivative equation with many dependent, intersectional variables. How do you crack that code? Empathy alone can do it. Listen, understand, put yourself in somebody else’s shoes. If they’re high-heeled shoes, so be it.

The playwright doesn’t frame this as a hand-wringing plea for outsiders to understand the drag subculture. Guest places the dilemma in the hearts of the characters within that culture. They have a hard time empathizing with each other — let alone themselves.

That’s the heart of the play’s tragedy. Not Courtney’s death. Her wasted opportunities while she’s still breathing.

Vickie offers Courtney a shot at real love in Courtney’s final days. But Courtney would have to drop barriers. Letting Vickie in would mean facing the fear of death. Courtney just can’t do it — and drives Vickie away in her final weeks.

A sad story, yes. But the bulk of the play is a celebration of Courtney’s life. It’s a wake after all.

Guest based the play on the reallife experience of his uncle. The playwright wanted his uncle’s story to be remembered.

After seeing this powerful play, you will.

fter a time away, Children First returned to Sharky’s on the Pier in Venice for its Flip Flops & Fashion fundraiser on Nov. 3.

Supporters gathered under a tent alongside Sharky’s for a fun beach event that supported the nonprofit’s services for at-risk children and families. President and CEO Philip Tavill and Vice President of Philanthropy Jessica Rogers lauded the group’s progress during the pandemic before sponsors Matt and Krystel Beall announced the models for the fashion show.

Men, women and children donned tropical and beachy looks and walked the runway that went

throughout the tent area.

There was also a special surprise for two Children First employees. Rogers presented bouquets of flowers as tokens of gratitude to Samantha Kingsley and Megan Wenger, who have respectively spent 11 and seven years with the nonprofit. The pair will soon be departing for new positions but were shocked and overjoyed to be given farewell gifts.

“We were completed caught off guard,” Wenger says. “It was a big surprise but very meaningful.”

“We’ve formed a family with this organization in the time we’ve been here,” Kingsley says. “It was nice to be recognized.”

So the Black Tie pause ended up being more than a few months.

To get ahead of everyone’s favorite question — yes, I’ve had a job and have stayed busy this whole time.

I’ve been far away from the Black Tie beat but working harder than ever in the Neighbors section with the occasional contribution to the Arts + Entertainment side.

It turns out being flexible and able to work different beats sure comes in handy when entire industries are shutting down.

But you know that. You lived it too!

Everyone — people and organizations alike — felt some hurt during this pandemic, but the nonprofit industry took a particularly brutal hit. Many of the organizations in Sarasota rely on the fundraisers and glamorous events to provide muchneeded income for their services in the community.

Many groups have tried to roll with the punches, but how do you work around the inherently incompatible format of having hundreds of (typically) older individuals packed into an indoor space?

Virtual events worked for a spell, but it seemed clear to virtually everyone that they couldn’t be a repeat thing headed into 2021.

The COVID-19 vaccine really turned a lot of this around. I noticed that many donors and philanthropic figures were the first to receive their shots early in 2021.

And now? We have a healthy and busy season once more.

There are still some groups that are holding out on events until a later date, but you’ll see many organizations and events returning to raise funds for those in need — which is good because that need is greater than ever.

I’m excited to be back, so let’s get to it!

the season,” Key Chorale Artistic Director Joseph Caulkins says. “We weren’t sure what to expect, but there were over 200 people. It was a full house. We never would have guessed that.”

This year’s event honored Nate Jacobs, the founder and artistic director of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, with the Perfect Pitch Award. Jacobs founded the theater company in 1999 and has since been part of countless productions and mentored countless artists in the community.

To mark the occasion, guests enjoyed performances from the Key Chorale Chamber Singers and the 2021-22 Student Scholars as well as guest performances from WBTT and Visible Men Academy.

The event typically raises around $25,000 for the group, but this year pulled in closer to $40,000.

“It was quite a shock to us,” Caulkins says.

He likes to think his group did a particularly good job showing its educational and community outreach. The money raised went to funding the group’s Student Scholar Program for local juniors and seniors pursuing a career in music.

t’s been nearly two years since the Child Protection Center had an in-person event; the organization last hosted its annual Night of Hope and Healing in early 2020.

Although it’s been some time since the organization hosted the fundraiser, Executive Director Douglas Staley says he was excited to be back again and felt his group’s supporters were, too.

“People are ready to get back to (our events)” Staley says.

The 42nd annual benefit held Nov. 4 at the Suncoast Air Center in Venice helps the nonprofit provide services for child abuse victims.

Guests ate, drank and played games for the first hour before Staley spoke with the assembled crowd. The group then played a video taking guests on a virtual tour of the CPC building before putting on a live auction.

Guests later heard from Ashley Connors, a former client who was helped by Child Protection Center.

Loneliness, especially in the senior population, can impact physical and emotional health and well-being. T

he University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus reprised its signature outdoor event Nov. 7.

Brunch on the Bay featured hundreds of supporters meeting at the school for an afternoon of drinks and dishes. A number of vendors — including Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant and Michael’s On East — were on-site serving food and passing out drinks during the social hour.

Guests eventually settled in their seats for lunch and heard from USF figures and representatives.

Proceeds from the event go toward student scholarships.
