Three Ringling College alumni collaborate to showcase the style and images of Old Florida in a new exhibition.

ld Florida. People talk a lot about it, but what does it mean, exactly? The term can be an elusive one. Is it characterized by a specific time period? An architectural aesthetic?

Perhaps it’s something less easily defined — a sense of longing for days bygone. Days before high-rise condos and strip malls, when sleepy, idyllic fishing towns, tight-knit communities and pristine beaches made Florida a destination.

It’s this sense of nostalgia — and its ambiguous nature — that inspired artists Tim Jaeger, Tom Stephens and Joseph Arnegger’s upcoming group exhibition at the Longboat Key Center for the Arts.

“Old Florida: A 21st Century Interpretation” opens Oct. 7.

With it, the three artists hope to pay tribute to the beauty and history of the place they love and call home.

All Ringling College graduates, the three artists first met through their alma mater. Although they graduated years apart from one another, they found themselves immersed in Sarasota’s relatively small exhibition social circle — and the even smaller circle of artists who call paint their medium

They became friends, and in 2008, they used their shared vision to create SARTQ, an artist collective designed to create a sense of community among likeminded local artists and host group exhibitions.

Recently, they considered creating a group show, this time featuring just the three of them.

Amidst rumors of the Longboat Key Center for the Arts potentially facing its last exhibition season, the idea for the show surfaced.

“It’s such a historic building,” says Jaeger. “It got us talking about how much Florida has changed. We wanted to tell the story of Old Florida — through our eyes. We’re fascinated with this idea of being connected to

As its title suggests, the show is a modern-day interpretation of the past. But what elements do they hope to encapsulate?

For Arnegger, a big source of inspiration comes from the group’s shared love of craftsmanship — especially relevant as painters.

“The whole show is about nostalgia,” he says. “There’s something honorable in crafting something by hand, and in a lot of ways, we’ve moved away from that. Art, too, has moved away from craftsmanship, with a bigger focus on concepts and execution than on the actual craft. But there’s no

his work, influencing his color palette to reflect Florida’s natural beauty and inspiring him to work in new mediums, including painting on plexiglass.

“That’s one of my favorite things about living in a city with a higher median age,” he says. “If you’re willing to look for them, there are countless stories here.

You have a direct link to the past, and those stories are really valuable. That fed my decision-making when I painted.”

TIMELESS BEAUTY

There’s an inherent risk in romanticizing the past. Several generations removed, people tend to see things through rose-colored glasses, overlooking any negative aspects of the time.

“It would’ve been really easy to politicize this,” says Arnegger.

“But we didn’t take that route.

This is more about honoring Florida’s beauty and remembering it as a destination — the land of milk and honey and art deco. We don’t want to lose that sense of magic about where we live, as if paradise isn’t two blocks from here.”

For Stephens, one of the most appealing parts of Old Florida is what he calls its sense of community and shared experiences.

With the exhibition, he hopes to

capture that and stir people’s own memories and emotional connections to the state he loves.

And while the show is looking to the past, he says it’s important not to lose sight of the present.

“That’s the funny thing about the good old days,” he says. “You never realize that you’re living in them. Twenty years from now, we’ll look back fondly at the present. So there’s a sense of timelessness we’re evoking — it’s something everyone can connect with.”

Arnegger and Stephens say that for them, the show is a continuation of their existing artistic styles. Arnegger, a self-described midcentury fanatic, paints deeply saturated, deliberate works, often incorporating nautical themes and ‘50s and ‘60s motifs.

Stephens’ dense, textured works often depict coastal Florida imagery.

Jaeger, however, says the show was a deviation from his standard subject matter and approach. To prepare, he says he studied historic photos and talked to longtime residents to get a sense of Old Florida and what it meant to them. What he found informed

Power to the Piano What makes the piano so grand? The arranger of the Artist Series’ ‘Piano Grand!’ concert explains.

Joseph Holt is a unique blend of creativity and hard work. He’s the Artist Series Concerts’ director of artistic programs, Gloria Musicae’s artistic director and Faith Lutheran Church’s director of music. On top of all that, he’s a virtuoso pianist in his own right.

On Oct. 9, Holt will join four other talented pianists at the Sarasota Opera House for the Artist Series “Piano Grand!” concert to show just what the piano can do. His fellow pianists are Don Bryn, Andrew Lapp, Rich Ridenour and Jonathan Spivey; they’ll be playing on five identical Steinway & Sons grand pianos.

Holt spoke with us recently about the piano’s expressive power. He was happy to share why he considers the piano to be “the most orchestral of instruments.”

What inspired you to create a five-piano concert?

The idea came from a series of multi-piano concerts I organized in Washington, D.C., when I played with the United States Army Band. We actually had 10 players on five pianos.

Our more well-known pieces include Johann Strauss’ “Blue Danube Waltz,” the “Waltz of the Flowers” from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance,” Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” and a selection from Rachmaninoff.

They’re familiar compositions — but like you’ve never heard them before. So, there’s an arrangement of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” a delightful piano piece that Mozart wrote. We all know it. But it’s a jazzy variation. The pianos play different phrases, and bounce off each other with all these jazz riffs.

I assume the pianists won’t all be banging away simultaneously.

No. Five pianos playing together sounds like five pianos playing together. I constantly switch up the combinations — the performance can be a solo, a four-hand duet, two pianos, four hands, or any number of variations. But each pianist won’t play every single note every single time. I also tried to be creative and structured the program so it’s not all the same. It’s a musical potpourri — the individual pieces are all extremely different. Each has been transcribed from the full orchestral score.

How does that work?

An orchestral score, say “The Blue Danube,” will have a bass part, a rhythm part, a harmony, a melody part, counter melodies and so on. Originally, these are written for violin, drums, etc. The transcriber substitutes piano for the various instruments. This works particularly well for the piano. It’s the most orchestral of all instruments.

In what way?

Strictly speaking, the piano is purely a percussion instrument. A key is pressed; a hammer strikes a string; it couldn’t be simpler. But with the right touch, a piano can seem to be singing; it can seem like other instruments. The pedal

mechanism allows the sound to reverberate in the wood. There’s a warm, human feel that electronic keyboards just can’t capture. You can achieve a variety of colors and sounds with the instrument — if the piano’s in the right hands, that is. We’ll have 10 of the very best on five pianos. Multi-pianos have tremendous expressive power; it’s a very effective way of presenting these pieces without a full orchestra. To a lover of piano, it’s like going off to piano heaven.

MUSIC CRITIC

The musicians of the Sarasota Orchestra presented a pair of bookend concerts last week devoted to music by composers born in the early to late 20th century. In listening to the nine works, there was a fascinating bridge between the romanticism of the late 19th century and the experimentation that took place in the 20th.

Most interesting was the juxtaposition of Pure music (music that has no programmatic material) and Program music (works that tell a story or paint pictures in sound).

What we found was that the earlier the music was written in the 20th century, the more it went against the tradition of what came before it, and as time went on, composers began experimenting, not with modality and scales, but with the way traditional instruments are used. Even more, we found that most of the music written recently has become almost entirely programmatic in theme, and it led to a question: What is music?

Take the oldest piece on the programs, Anton Webern’s “Six Bagatelles” (Thursday) and a relatively new work by Francis Schwartz, “The Grey Road,” (performed Sunday).

The Webern piece is pure music without a story while Schwartz depicts war, death and horror. Neither is easy to take. The Webern piece is an experiment in what was a new sound — atonality — invented by the composer’s mentors, Schoenberg and Berg. It’s one of those pieces that’s more interesting to play than to hear, but it was carried off well by violinists Christopher Takeda and Jennifer Best Takeda, violist Steven Laraia and cellist Nadine Trudel.

The Schwartz piece, a tour-de-force for solo tubist Jay Hunsberger, was played impeccably but didn’t come off as the gloomy, dour work Schwartz meant. Titters scattered through the audience as Hunsberger followed the musical instructions to stamp his feet and make gasping sounds.

Fortunately, there were no “carefully chosen aromas” or “control of the hall’s temperature,” as the composer requested to accompany the work.

Thursday’s program also

included “TrainspOrt,” a fun and fascinating piece about a train ride by Theodor Burkali, played enthusiastically by bassoonist Fernando Traba and percussionists George Nickson and Bruce Lehman, and “Thirteen Ways,” an inventive work by Thomas Albert, based on the poem “Thirteen ways of looking at a blackbird,” by Wallace Stevens.

Here, again, we have program music and, in the hands of Carmen Bannon, Calvin Falwell, Daniel Jordan, Chizuko Matsusaka, Nickson and Conor Hanick playing a variety of instruments, it took us on an emotional and fantastical ride on the wings of birds.

Perhaps the best known work on Thursday’s program was George Crumb’s brilliant “Vox Balaenae,” (Voice of the Whale) which is what music of our time is all about. Here was experimentation with instruments imitating the sounds of the great whales but still carrying emotion, beauty and feeling so strong, so true, one doesn’t need a story to back it up. Flutist Betsy Traba (whose opening solo brought chills and tears to me), cellist Christopher Schnell and Jonathan Spivey, playing a prepared piano, did a masterful job with this wellknown work that’s lasted the test of several decades.

In addition to the Schwartz piece for tuba, Sunday’s concert, which often centered around death, highlighted a pair of wondrous works: “Cadernos,” a bell-like piece

by Andreia Pinto-Correia, played with understanding and clarity by Nickson on solo vibraphone, and “Death with Interruptions,” by Derek Bermel, performed with warmth and beauty by violinist Jennifer Best Takeda, cellist Christopher Schnell and pianist Jonathan Spivey.

Pinto-Correia returned with her “Teatro de Marionetas,” a jazzy work depicting enormous puppets (imagine a Tyrannosaurus rex on wires) featuring Hunsberger and Aaron McCalla on tubas and Nickson on a drums.

Sunday’s program ended with “Immutable Dreams,” by Kati Agocs, a work for chamber ensemble conducted by Nickson that combined pure music with a program and left us with the impression we need to hear more of this composer.
