o paraphrase Heraclitus, “You can’t step in the same river twice.” A good jazz musician never plays the same song twice — the same way. Pianist and composer Michael Royal fits that Heraclitian description. His mind is a music library bursting with the legacy of Debussy, Ravel, Satie, John Coltrane, Monk, Bill Evans and many others. His fingers find improvisational spaces to explore inside their compositions.

Locally, the hard-working Royal performs at The ­Haye Loft, Burns Court Café, L’Amore Restaurant and many other venues.

He frequently collaborates with drummer Johnny Moore. Add bassist Richard Drexler to the equation, and it adds up to the Michael Royal Trio. No performance ever sounds like the last one. A recent concert with Moore made us wonder: How does he do that? But first, we had to find out who he is.

How did you get started in jazz?

I was an early bloomer. I started playing this kind of music when I was 16. Before that, I thought the greatest thing I’d ever heard was the extended organ solo on “Light My Fire” by The Doors.

Then I met a drummer named Majid Shabazz, who’d been playing with Alice Coltrane.

He invited me to sit in with his band in St. Pete. I heard this gentleman stand up and deliver 40 choruses of the blues on his saxophone. That was it for me.

Why did the experience move you so deeply?

Shabazz was telling a story in sound, and telling it with such eloquence, depth and unpretentiousness. He was lost in the beauty of the moment, not calling attention to himself.

The rest of the band showed the same character. They talked about sports, science, current events — you name it. They were well-read, well-informed and philosophical. That made a deep impression on my 16-yearold mind. I instantly decided I wanted to be an adult.

As opposed to?

Well, being a kid all my life. Like the typical kids fooling around in a typical rock band. Sometimes talented kids, sometimes not, but cracking dirty jokes, and not taking anything seriously. Why should they? The music they

play is simplistic. Pop music boils down to so many cookiecutter templates. It’s music for kids, for teenagers — an adolescent sensibility. Shabazz opened my eyes and ears to music for adult minds.

And you decided to sit at the grown-ups’ table.

That I did. The pop music world lost all interest for me. I made up my mind to get into the adult music world.

I began a lifelong love affair with John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Bill Evans and all of the jazz greats who were doing what I was trying to do. As a teenager, I couldn’t define what they were doing. But I knew I wanted to do it.

I’m curious how you do it. You change rhythm, trade riffs — and there’s no sheet music!

How? That’s an interesting question, but I’m not sure I can answer it. How does a flock of birds know how to all turn at the same time? How does a school

of 10 billion sardines suddenly switch direction?

It looks like telepathy.

There may be some telepathy involved. I won’t rule that out entirely. But I think it’s mostly memory. Johnny and I have been on this journey for a long, long time. We’ve built up a common understanding. We can quote from the literature of jazz the way preachers can quote from the Bible.

Who needs iTunes when it’s all in your head?

You got it, man. So, Johnny and I can draw on our shared legacy — and we’ve developed a kind of shorthand. Musicians and ballplayers can exchange a lot of meaning in just a glance.

We’ll just look at each other. To a casual observer, it looks like telepathy. But there’re just lots of signals that are very obvious to us that nobody else knows. It’s a subtle thing, but it allows us to take risks.

In what sense?

We can explore new territory — instead of rehashing the same tune the same way over and over, which is the antithesis of real jazz. We don’t have to play it safe! I can go out on limb; he can go out on a limb. We trust each other to pick up on it and take it somewhere. There’s an element of faith involved — like Roger Staubach throwing a Hail Mary pass to Drew Pearson at the other end of the field.

You’ve got the confidence that the drummer won’t drop the ball.

Yeah. That goes with confidence that I won’t drop the ball. Let me give you another sports analogy. Go back in time to 1970, Boston Red Sox. Carl Yastrzemski successfully steals second base for the 23rd time. If you ask ‘How’d you do that?’ the answer wouldn’t be in where he puts his feet. It’s where he puts his mind.

permission to move. His feet know exactly where to take him.

He doesn’t have to think about it.

There’s constant feedback with the musicians. Is the audience part of it?

Not really. I’m not an entertainer; Johnny isn’t; Michael Ross isn’t; no serious jazz musician I can name is. Constantly monitoring the audience — then choosing what and how you play based on people’s reactions: Do they like this? Do they like that? That’s not the direction we ever took. Other musicians can take you to places you’ve been a thousand times. Let us run the train. We’ll take you to places you’ve never been before.

So it’s a mystery tour. You don’t know where you’re going until you get there. And the audience comes along for the ride.

A good audience will do that.

That’s the ideal — that’s not always what you get.

How do you define a good audience?

Well, an adult audience, a mature audience, an educated audience. Their minds are present; they’re with you in the room. It’s probably easier to define a bad audience. Think of what it’s like to take a kid along for a ride. What does the kid say?

Are we there yet?

Exactly. Going with the flow is a skill. Listening is a skill. By that I mean active listening—the opposite of passive. Adult music demands an adult mind.

So, how do you listen?

You need to turn your brain off and your eyes and ears on. Quit thinking and reacting to everything you hear. Stop making judgments, trying to secondguess. Ignore the little voice in your head saying, ‘I like this, I don’t like that.’

Silence the inner critic?

For the duration of the show, yeah.

Darwin Santa Maria to launch

CHELA BREWING CO. Santa Maria plans to open the new brewing company by November.

After nearly a year and a half away from the craft-beer business, Darwin Santa Maria will return to the craft he counts among his strongest passions. The chef and brewer announced this week his plans to open a new brewing company, Chela Brewing Co., by November.

The new brewery will be an extension of the brand he created this June with CeviChela, a Latin street-food restaurant on Siesta Key. Chela Brewing Co. will contract with a Florida-based brewery to brew, can and keg its beers.

Santa Maria will partner with a Miami-based distribution company to distribute the beer heavily in the Miami market. He will also serve the beer in CeviChela as he explores distribution opportunities in Sarasota.

The brewery will continue to focus on Peruvian-inspired flavors and ingredients, as well as barrel-aged varieties and will debut with two recipes Santa Maria created alongside brewer

consultant Tom Harris: PIPA, a Peruvian India pale ale and Boa, an orange wheat ale. He also plans to announce the appointment of another full-time brewer in the coming weeks.

The brewing company marks the first step toward Santa Maria’s larger goal of opening his own “farm-to-keg” brewery in Sarasota. He hopes to expand beyond the contract-brewing model after a year to branch out with his own local facility and tap room, using his own farmed ingredients as well as a nanobrewery in Peru as a working lab to experiment with Peruvian ingredients before shipping them for brewing.

“I hope to continue on my mission to create great craft beer,” he says. “I plan to be even better than before. The past year and a half of not being involved in the beer business gave me a chance to look at myself and evolve as a businessman. My love and respect of craft beer, as well as my knowledge, has only grown deeper. I’m excited for the next step — to do some great things at Chela Brewing Co.”

The Art of

Advertising Pedro Pérez exhibit broadens the definition of art.

I

t’s not every day you see an anti-nausea medication on display in an art gallery.

However, its creator wouldn’t be bothered by passersby questioning the piece’s artistic validity. Pedro Pérez is the designer of the packaging for the bottle of Children’s Emetrol currently on display in the Patricia Thompson Gallery until Oct. 21. He believes if he has started a conversation about the definition of art, he has succeeded.

“Art, to people, is different,” he says. “I would argue with you that a landscaper is an artist. I would argue that an architect is an artist.

I would even argue with you that a mechanic, to a certain extent, is an artist. It’s what we do and how we define what we do.”

The bottle is part of the Pedro Pérez exhibit showcasing work he has produced from his early college years until now. The collection includes everything from industrial and graphic design to web development and photography.

Pérez graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in 1993 with a degree in graphic art, and he taught global brand strategies

After graduation, he became interested in the role of design in modern advertising and marketing. In July 2004, he started his own agency, Nuevo Advertising Group, with his wife, Roseanne Avella-Pérez.

The public’s exposure to advertisements is typically limited to billboards, print publications and the various digital screens that define the 21st century. Tim Jaeger, the college’s community engagement manager, says this exhibition defies that.

Asked why this exhibit was deemed “art,” Jaeger says there’s a multitude of pieces that could go in a gallery if they meet the school’s mission, and these fit the bill.

“What we want to do is tell a story,” he says. “So this is a relevant story about an idea that exists, basically in the mind of some people, and then it’s translated through a creative. It’s a great demonstration of the creative process.”

Pérez says he wanted to showcase the breadth of his work, and he realizes visitors might interperet his work in many different ways because of its atypical nature. But that’s exactly what he loves about it.

“It’s the same product, it’s just marketed and branded differently, which adds value to the idea that it’s all about the packaging,” says Pérez. “It’s all about the creative.”

Pérez says he was glad for the opportunity to show his alma mater what he’s accomplished since graduating. He says exhibits like this show students and their families what they’ll be capable of producing after graduation.

Jaeger says the exhibit shows just how much goes into the creative process and how many different applications the process can have.

“It’s not just art,” he says of the work. “It’s art and design and function, among other things. It’s many things, because it’s used not just as a product to help children who are nauseated. It has a purpose, like art does.”

As for what Pérez wants viewers to garner from the exhibit, the message applies to both artists and non-artists alike.

“Life is long, and it’s in the exploration of art that you find who you are,” he says. “No one at 21 should know what they are.

They should have a good idea, but life changes, and it’s OK. I want people to be encouraged to go do new things.”

As co-founder and vice president of sales and marketing at Nuevo, Pérez plays many roles.

He’s an artist, a businessman, a strategist and an analyst. He leads focus groups and uses his roughly 3,000-person Facebook and LinkedIn following to gather product insight. He’s a graphic designer by trade as well as a self-taught advertiser who sets himself apart by focusing on both functionality and depth of purpose.

Pérez says that he and his wife prefer to work with four or five clients who understand and appreciate the value of their business model. They aren’t interested in becoming a big agency with a multitude of small projects or simply putting a new design on an old product and “putting it on a shelf.”

“I think that’s a waste of time — a waste of money,” he says. “There has to be meaning. Maybe I’m a little too deep for what I do, but I think that’s the right thing to do, ethically.”

Rather than making design decisions based on what he finds personally appealing, Pérez prefers to use focus groups and other sesearch methods to ensure he appeals to his clients’ audience.

Nuevo is also the only Hispanic-based advertising agency in the greater Sarasota/Manatee county area. This is exemplified in the exhibit through a box of Micatin, a foot cream that the agency was asked to modernize and invite the hispanic community to purchase.

In March, Ann Hartka received the Bernice “Bunny” Skirboll Award for Outstanding Board Member.

The Compeer Sarasota founder uses friendship to fight mental-illness stigma.

E

ven at 98, Ann Hartka can still be found around town with her black clipboard, recruiting volunteers for the organization

that’s closest to her heart.

“I’m just a recruiter,” she says.

“I go where there’s a crowd, where there’s a lot of people, and I’ve been pretty successful.”

Despite her modesty, Hartka is more than a recruiter. She is the founder of the Sarasota Chapter of Compeer, an inter-

national nonprofit organization that pairs community volunteers with individuals who receive mental-health treatment to foster a unique companionship.

After being an active member of the advisory board for its five

years of existence, Hartka still prefers to do her service outside of board meetings — in the most hands-on way possible.

Growing up in Philadelphia, Hartka watched her cousin, Jeff Shair, struggle with paranoid schizophrenia. He was diagnosed at 17, but with the support of his Compeer match, he eventually gained the encouragement he needed to finish high school, attend Temple University and become a journalist and public speaker. He now serves as a consultant for the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services and travels the U.S. speaking about how Compeer

has changed his life.

Compeer volunteers are required to meet with their match at least once a week. During this time, matches can do whatever they wish, from a walk through Bayfront Park to a night at the movies. But for Hartka, it’s volunteers like Shair’s, who go beyond the one-hour minimum for each meeting, who make the real difference.

Hartka says after seeing the positive effect that the program had on Shair, she decided to start a local Compeer chapter.

The chapter began when Hartka brought the idea to Brother William Geenan, the founder of Senior Friendship

Lynn Buehler, director of the Compeer program, says Hartka was persistent in not only ensuring the program got started, but also that it flourished.

“Ann really pushed it forward,” she says. “When she latched on to the possibility, she was going to make sure that it was going to succeed here.”

Hartka says her passion for mental health awareness developed when she learned the staggering statistics associated with the lack of attention that mental health receives in Florida.

According to a 2015 National Alliance on Mental Illness report, Florida ranked 49th in the nation for state funding for mental health.

Finding volunteers who are interested in providing emotional support to people with mental illness, she believes, can help counteract this unfortunate reality.

“Because these people are either suicidal or they’re depressed — having a friend just changes their life,” she says.

“They really appreciate it.”

Hartka calls the program the “main point” of her life, something Buehler believes keeps the volunteer signup clipboard filled with names.

“She’s so lovely and so energetic, it’s hard to say no to her,” she says. “She’s just a beautiful person inside and out.”

Lea and James were introduced through mutual friends during their sophomore year at Cardinal Mooney High School. Lea recalls that she enjoyed watching “the football stud” while he played as a fullback for the school. The two shared a friendship and stayed in touch after college. THE PROPOSAL

Just shy of their four-year dating anniversary, James popped the question to Lea on Oct. 31, 2015, at Walt Disney World. Combining Lea’s love of Halloween and Disney, James surprised his soon-to-be fiancé with a trip to the park. On Halloween, Lea and James were enjoying another day at the park — an unsuspecting Lea thinking the highlight of the day might be the jalapeño and cheddar pretzels and the ride “Spaceship Earth.” Little did she know James would surprise her with a private boat ride to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks — and a proposal. Afterward, James had a private car waiting to take them to dinner, where Lea was surprised to find her parents, brother and sister-in-law and James’ parents.

THE WEDDING AND RECEPTION

Using a gold rose as the cornerstone to their design, the couple included classic, elegant details ranging from gold bridesmaids’ dresses to hand-painted gold rose favors by Sarasota artist Debbie Danheisser. Elements of gold, ivory, and sparkle illuminated the evening and were seen in even the smallest of details, including the place settings and stationery.

The ceremony took place at First Baptist Church in downtown Sarasota, followed by a reception in the courtyard at the Ringling Museum of Art. The bride and groom arrived in a Rolls Royce, and guests enjoyed a cocktail hour complete with ballerinas in the courtyard. The bride’s father, owner of Cafe Baci, created the meal in collaboration with Paul Mattison. Guests enjoyed live music by Serenade of Souls, dancing and a fireworks show after dinner.
