Supporters of Community AIDs

Network gathered at Michael’s On East Saturday to watch six local celebrities and six professional dancers battle it out ballroom style.

This year’s competitors were Jennifer Rust, Roger Capote, Ashley Guttridge, Bart Lowther, Les McCurdy and Alix Redmonde. Jennifer Rust took home the top prize with partner Max Lototskyy, while Alix Redmonde won Top Fundraiser.

A Timeless Treasure

The new bathroom at Michael’s on the Bay is more modern than the bathroom of the previous structure. It also houses a vanity area for brides to do their makeup.

Potty Talk Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ “A Private Evening in Selby’s Secret Garden” was an inviteonly event to announce the commencement of a master planning stage for the gardens, as well as a lead gift from Nathalie McCulloch toward the future construction of a new library facility. The event also served as the debut for the new Michael’s on the Bay, which was completely renovated by Michael Klauber and Phil Mancini of Michael’s On East. The event space features new lighting and carpeting, as well as a new sound system. The changes give the space a more contemporary and natural feel with a breathtaking view of the bay, but the real excitement from the renovation was the women’s bathroom. Transformed from its vintage yellow-tile, institutional look, it’s now large and modernized, complete with a vanity area for brides to do their makeup.

We love an outfit that tells a good story, and the 1920s-style flapper dress that Junior League of Sarasota President Britt Riner wore at the league’s Art of Food Masquerade Saturday has quite a history. The dress originally belonged to longtime JLS member Kari Hagar, who passed away June 7. Her husband, George Hagar, donated all of her clothes to the league, so the members decided to hold a Junior League Estate Sale Friday and Saturday at JLS Headquarters.

Riner was working the sale when one of her fellow members found the flapper dress and insisted that she try it on. She liked the fit so much that she bought it and decided to wear it to the masquerade Oct. 22, at Selby Public Library.

“I can’t imagine how hard it was for her husband to give away his wife’s things,” she says. “But it is all the more a privilege to wear one of her dresses because he gave it to an organization she cherished and some of her best friends picked it out just for me.”

Some sisters do everything together — even marriage.

During the same week that Tropical Storm Hermine struck Florida, these two sisters had family and friends fly in from around the world — seven countries, to be exact — to celebrate their weddings, which were just five days apart.

Richard Bloom met Gabrielle through mutual friends in New York City, where they lived before moving to London together. They visited New York in July 2015, and Richard proposed on the Hotel Hugo rooftop overlooking Manhattan with her favorite song, flowers, champagne and an engraved box with photos of their travels.

Elana’s husband, Marc, is the brother of her longtime friend Paul Rosenbaum. She’s known Paul since she was 14 but didn’t meet Marc until Paul connected them during a visit to Los Angeles in January. Marc knew after the first date that he wanted to propose. On on a last-minute trip from Los Angeles to Florida in May, he proposed, sans ring, on Turtle Beach. Afterward, they met her family at the resort. Within minutes,they decided the sisters would marry the same week.

THE WEDDINGS

On Aug. 30, Elana and Marc were married on Turtle Beach.

Storm clouds were in the distance, and a misty rain accented the brief Jewish ceremony. But Elana wasn’t phased.

“The ocean was behind us; birds were all around. It was so dramatic and pretty,” she says.

The reception followed at Turtle Beach Resort, which her parents built in the 1990s and still own.

Gabrielle and Richard were married at the Bay Preserve in Osprey Sept. 4. Due to the preserve’s wet ground, the reception was moved to Michael’s On East. Gabrielle says you never would have guessed that there had been a tropical storm the day before.

“These kids are immersed in the arts all day,” she says. “They’re interested in how the art is made.

Scott Kuiper and other actors from the FSU/Asolo Conservatory bring Shakespeare to young audiences as part of its touring production.

The students filling those chairs aren’t typical, either. They’re excited, but not cutting up. A classroom of future arts professionals — and already thinking like professionals. They’re here to see a play. And also to see how it’s done.

The players are third-year student actors from the FSU/Asolo Conservatory. They make rapidfire introductions. (Jillian Courtney, Scott Kuiper, Brett Mack, Wyatt McNeil, Danielle Renella, Jacob Sherburne, Kelly Elizabeth Smith and Jessie Taylor comprise today’s cast.) After that, Mills gives the middle school audience some liberating advice.

“At other live performances, someone may have told you not to talk, breathe or move,” she says.

“That’s not what live theater is about. Your energy helps brings the play to life. So if it’s funny, laugh. If it’s sad, feel free to cry.

Just save your conversations until the play is over.”

With that, the actors jump into it. The ghost of Hamlet’s kingly father seems to fly in from the darkness. (The actor’s actually perched on top of a ladder being wheeled across the stage.) A simple effect, but it earns a gasp. And Hamlet’s cutting words to Ophelia earn ugly looks.

And on it goes. The pace is fast and furious — cut down to what Hollywood screenwriting manuals call “action beats.” The focus is on real action in the real world, not thoughts in the characters’ minds. What’s going on?

This is “Hamlet” unplugged, but not uncut. Strictly speaking, it’s “The Tragedy of Hamlet” — an adaptation/condensation created by director Justin Lucero. Today’s performance is just one stop on a tour to schools and performing arts venues across the state.

Although a previous performance of the adaptation at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts got a good response, the students’ reaction took it to another level. The students relate to the play with their whole being. It’s all new and fresh to them. Some are meeting Hamlet for the first time — along with his friends and

I want them filled with questions and hungry for more.”

Right now, Queen Gertrude just sipped from the poisoned chalice King Claudius meant for Hamlet. (This earns yet another gasp, seemingly from students who want to go back in time and stop her.) Thanks to Laertes’ poisoned blade, Hamlet’s already a walking dead man. Laertes points this out.

Hamlet knows exactly where the blade should go next.

“Then venom to thy work!”

And he runs King Claudius through in a nice bit of fight choreography. (Kudos to Dan Granke.)

The rest is silence.

After the silence, crashing waves of applause. The actors bow, clearly moved. Now the students can talk.

Why is Hamlet wearing an edgy, modern T-shirt, when the other actors look old-fashioned?

Does that mean he’s ahead of his time?

Did the Queen drink the poison on purpose, or by mistake?

Why did Horatio see the Ghost but not Hamlet’s mother?

Why do the actors in the playwithin-a-play wear masks?

Lucero wanted to leave students filled with questions.

That’s exactly what he did.

hebecame an edgy young director, he’d been an edgy young educator. On this project, he served two masters: art and education.

He didn’t take that lightly.

“Adapting Shakespeare is a profound responsibility,” he says. “And ‘Hamlet’ is the holy of holies. I knew whatever I brought to the schools had to do justice to the essence of the play. I avoided artistic license and kept as much of the plot intact as possible, despite the drastic cuts.

It’s a timeless story, so I wasn’t specific about where and when it happens.”

How did he pull that off — in practical terms?

Lucero hit on the concept of a traveling troupe of actors. The ragtag company honors Hamlet’s last words to his friend Horatio: “Tell my story.” Led by Horatio, they take Hamlet’s story on the road and stage the play with the typical backstage clutter you’d find at most theaters: a ladder, a hand truck, a costume rack — whatever they could find.

“The adaptation’s meant to seem incomplete and on the fly,” says Lucero. “It’s not a substitute for the original; it’s a doorway into it. There are gaps and mysteries and deeper levels to explore. When the students leave,

His gaze is different than the rest of them. Instead of looking at the viewer like the other subjects, Dillon holds his purple-encased iPhone and points it at his viewers while a skinny green paintbrush dangles from his mouth. Or is he pointing it at himself? His dark, untamed hair sits atop his head in a messy bun, and he looks into his front-facing camera with a look of tired concentration.

Do artists view the world differently? It’s a complex concept.

The painting described above, “Dillon: Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man,” by Grace GraupePillard, is a portrait of a waiter at a diner the artist used to frequent.

Her fascination produced a striking image that represents the way artists can use their work to not only share their perspective, but also to potentially challenge those of their viewers.

Mark Ormond, curator for exhibitions at Ringling College Galleries, included this in his most recent exhibit, “Observation/ Reference/Gesture Contemporary Paintings.” The exhibit, which runs through Dec. 2, at the Willis Smith Gallery, challenges people to examine the objects and people they encounter on a daily basis.

A SECOND LOOK

For Ormond, several of the paintings are a nod to the modern trend of treating cellphones like vital organs.

“Now, where the camera is literally a part of everyone, artists are free to use it for reference and to make it part of their process,” he says. “It has become part of their process to some extent, even if it’s just for catching observations.”

One featured artist who uses photography as an observational tool is Dustin Juengel, faculty member at Ringling College.

Juengel is the creator of “Untitled (Lemur),” an oil painting he created for a fundraising calendar for the Lemur Conservation Foundation in Myakka City.

All of his work is based on photographs, so Juengel began the process when he went to the lemur reserve and took several hundred photographs of lemurs that he observed. He narrowed the photos down to one that showed the potential to make a unique portrait and used projections to create a preliminary drawing before finally putting paint to canvas.

Juengel was drawn to the way the lemur was seated with leaves in the foreground and ample vegetation surrounding him. This, he says, was mostly due to chance, but he likes that his photography is not controlled — he simply photographs what he observes.

He takes control, he says, when he picks up his paintbrush.

He says the photos help him stay focused and mark his progress.

“As opposed to working from imagination, I like to give myself a goal or at least something that I’m referencing to know if I’m achieving what I’m looking for,” he says. “If I painted from imagination, the image in my head

would change, and I like to have a solid foundation.”

Ormond is interested in Juengel’s work because he thinks the final product, though it was based off a photograph, deviates from reality in a way that can allow the viewer to appreciate the labor that went into it. When he looks at Juengel’s work, he says, he can see the brush strokes and is reminded of the hours of painstaking effort it took to complete.

VALUING THE SUBJECT

The way he speaks about Juengel’s art is similar to the way he describes “Brush” by Jeffrey Ripple, another work on display in the exhibit.

In this painting of a paintbrush, he sees much more than an artistic tool nailed to a wall. He sees every bristle as an individual with its own personality, and he views

the whole brush as part of a larger narrative — then he begins to ponder the story of how old it is and where it’s been.

Juengel and Ormond hope that this exhibit will slow people down, especially in a world where everyone seems to crave images instantly. They hope that by looking at these pieces and contemplating the craftsmanship that went into them, viewers might begin to appreciate both the timeintensive work of the artists and the stories they were trying to tell.

“There is so much going on in an artist’s mind that informs what we see,” he says. “It’s not just what, in a photograph, would be one frame.

It’s hours of experience with the object of the canvas and then also the hours that the artist spent thinking about it that informs what we see.”

However, as the series’ title implies, Baker isn’t exactly cut out for his new line of work. His attempts to learn the ropes of his new cold-blooded career result in a darkly comic commentary on society’s obsession with violence and its prolific perpetrators.

With a bigger crew and a bigger budget, Ahedo says he was able to tackle the subject more effectively. The crew working on the pilot consisted of eight people.

For the second and third episode, a 25-person crew, including members flown in from Los Angles and New York, worked to bring the story to life.

Additional crew, including four dedicated production designers, a professional sound engineer, visual-effects artist and an onset film editor not only made the process more efficient, but they also helped more accurately realize the vision for the series.

The extra talent was especially useful in transforming a house — and the actors — for a flashback scene taking place in the 1980s, vintage wallpaper, mullets and all. Other challenges included filming a Christmas scene in mid-August, which required a fair share of out-of-season decoration shopping.

Ahedo says he’s most excited to see people’s reactions.

“It’s so surreal to scroll through Amazon Prime and see something you created on the list,” he says.

“That’s exciting, and I can’t wait for people to see it. The pilot is sort of like the hook. The second episode reels you in.”

Unsung Heroes Pulitzer Prize-winning librettist Mark Campbell sheds light on the crucial, if not mysterious, job of contemporary American librettist.

here are unsung heroes, and then there are opera librettists. Pulitzer Prizewinner Mark Campbell is one of the most prolific, indemand librettists in the world.

His work has won countless awards, including a Grammy nomination, and has been produced by opera companies across the United States.

Best known for works such as “Silent Night” and his operatic adaptation of “The Shining,” he’s become one of the leading figures in contemporary American opera. But still, he sees a big lapse in understanding when it comes to his profession. As the person responsible for writing the story for which the conductor composes the music, the librettist is crucial to the operatic process. Yet many people still don’t understand what it is he does — or that contemporary opera even exists.

“Librettists are notorious for never being properly credited,” he says, laughing. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to go to an opera company and explain that they have everyone’s name listed — all the way down to the wigmaker — but my name is nowhere to be found. I hope I can help people better understand.”

Campbell is currently an artist in residence at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Englewood, and in conjunction with the Sarasota Opera, led a talk Wednesday at the Opera House titled, “Adventures in Opera.”

We caught up with Campbell to talk contemporary opera, the art form’s changing landscape and what exactly a librettist does.

“THERE’S A sense of mystery about what a librettist does.

Opera is created by two people: a librettist and a composer. Sometimes that’s one person, but usually it’s not. So many people still think that operas are written by composers. My job is to serve the composer and the music.”

“PEOPLE THINK of opera as this ancient form. Few people are aware that contemporary American operas are even out there. The industry is actually amazing right now. When I meet people and tell them what I do, a lot of them ask if I write my operas in Italian. People just aren’t aware of it.”

“GREAT AMERICAN operas are being written right now, and they’re being programmed at opera houses because the audience is changing. Younger audiences don’t necessarily want

to see ‘La Boheme’ a fourth time.

They want to see something relevant to their lives.”

“HOPEFULLY THEY can’t relate directly to ‘The Shining,’ but it’s a familiar story. The only thing different now is that we’ve added music to intensify the emotions. It’s an art form I want to keep alive, and that can be controversial. Of course there are purists, and people who look down on contemporary opera, but if you really break it down, these are great, emotionally powerful stories.”

“A GOOD librettists is pretty much invisible. We do our job in the shadows. It’s storytelling through music. It’s not just a bunch of syllables, it’s a story from which the composer takes his cue. The story informs the music.”

“BECAUSE OF the expansive nature of music, it’s about using as few words as possible to get the message across — seven or eight-word sentences. Music can take you to an emotional place that words simply can’t touch. Music and emotions are abstract. It’s like love; if you try to break it down and explain it, you lose the magic. So you need to know when to step back and let the music take over.”

“THERE’S A synergy that only happens when music and words are combined that thrills me. That’s why I write opera.

Reducing an audience to tears or overcoming them with joy is so much more effective with music behind it.”

“I WANT to be able to answer the question: ‘Why an opera?’

It needs to be a story in which the character has no other way to express the emotion and the grandness of their story than by singing.”

“OPERA DOESN’T have to be this rich, old thing that has no connection to our lives today.

I believe that strongly. In Italy, the whole family would go to an opera. I wouldn’t mind if that happened today. But the art form won’t survive if we don’t continue to appeal to the world in which we live. I’m still writing my operas based on 400-yearold ideas. I just like a good story.”

“I WANT every seat in an opera house filled. As long as the story is good and the music isn’t compromised. I want to find a character people care about — one they can be excited for two-anda-half hours of them singing.”

INKING TRADITION With its old-school style, Liberty Tattoo Club celebrates Americana.

Trevor Moss was a junior at Ringling College when he got his first tattoo.

He’d devoted the last three years to studying illustration and graphic design, but the moment the needle first sank ink into his arm, he says he knew what he wanted to do with the rest of his life.

“That was it for me,” he says. “I loved tattoos right away. I started painting my own traditional tattoo flash; I was hooked. My professors said, ‘If this is what you really want to do, why don’t you just pursue that?’”

So he left.

Taking what he learned with him — color schemes, composition and human figure — he found a style that appealed to him most: American traditional.

Largely pioneered by artists such as Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, traditional tattoos are characterized by dark, thick lines, bold colors in a limited palette and themes centered on nautical life, pin-up imagery and other elements of Americana counterculture.

For Moss, it was a style that spoke to him right away.

“I loved everything about it,” he says. “The bold, clean lines and bright colors; the permanence. I wanted to be able to give people something beautiful that’s going to last forever.”

After working in shops in the Sarasota/Bradenton area, Moss, along with fellow artist Nicholas Coyne, branched out six months ago to open their own shop, Liberty Tattoo Club, which is devoted exclusively to the style that

first enthralled him.

Located at 2430 Stickney Point Road, the shop is home to Moss, Coyne, Karl Boardman, Steve Walters and apprentice Michael Noblitt, who say they wanted to create a club-like atmosphere, where fellow artists and enthusiasts could feel at home.

For Moss, the style goes deeper than purely aesthetics. It represents not only free-spirited rebellion and an alternative lifestyle, but it also embodies the idea of longevity.

“To me, it’s about keeping tradition alive,” he says. “Things are constantly changing. Styles come and go. But this is something that’s held true for years and years. That’s important, and it’s something I’m proud to help bring back.”

THE TEST OF TIME

On a recent Friday afternoon, Moss is standing over Walters, focused intently on his work as he

adds a splash of bright green ink to a scorpion tattoo on his shoulder blade.

The steady buzz of the tattoo machine reverberates off the checkered floors, as does an old Johnny Cash song playing on the record player. Around him, the walls are covered in framed artwork — some his, others by artists he admires: pin-up posters, hot rods and motorcycles.

“It all goes hand in hand,” says Moss. “A lot of people who are into tattoos are also into cars and motorcycles. It’s about working with your hands. That’s something we’re really focused on here. You won’t see us working on iPads; we draw everything by hand. You’ve got to put hard time and soul into something if you want to do it right.”

Moss says the style is enjoying resurgence in popularity, and though there are a handful of artists in town who practice traditional style, there wasn’t a shop

devoted to it.

With Liberty, he says, the goal is to offer art that’s rooted in the foundations of the style, with a personal touch. Each artist has his own take on the style, incorporating expanded color palettes or borrowed elements of new-school styles to keep things original.

Above all though, Moss says he hopes to give people something they can be proud of for years to come.

“I met a guy recently, who had these old-school tattoos that he got 60 years ago,” says Moss.

“They still looked great. That’s what I want to be a part of — giving people something that has deep meaning for them and can still look amazing decades later.”
