Mike and Joslyn Devaney had never built a movie set before. But when the mother of a young horrorfilm lover came to them with an idea for a custom portrait shoot, they figured it out.

That’s what the Devaneys do. As the owners of Little Skull Photography, they cater to the most unique of requests, and without any formal training beyond a few courses on photography basics, they learn by doing. Based on the high frequency of re-

PICTURE PERFECT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

“We’re our own boss, and we have fun,” says Mike Devaney.

“As long as I can pay both of these rents and be able to afford food, I’m good. If I can do that by making people smile and have fun, then awesome.”

The Devaneys got their start in Manchester, N.H., where they befriended some artists at the Studio of Photographic Arts (SOPHA). Mike’s background is in web development and Joslyn’s is in childcare, so they had no prior experience with photography.

After a few workshops at SOPHA, some insight from the studio’s owner, Bud Thorpe — and a great deal of trial and error — they were off.

“Nobody taught us how to edit photos or pose models or style wardrobes,” says Joslyn. “This is all stuff that’s coming from our heads. We’re just playing until we get it right.”

The pair rented their first studio at SOPHA for a few years before deciding they were sick of the snow. Mike says he spent seven years trying to persuade Joslyn to move to Florida, but now that they’re here, she doesn’t want to leave.

Sarasota’s art scene was one

of the main draws for the couple when they were deciding where to open their studio, but they also recognize that they’re different than many other artists in town — which might be helping them.

Mike says their style could be a better fit in a city like Hollywood, but he likes the fact that there’s nobody doing quite the same work in Sarasota.

Ever since opening Little Skull, the Devaneys have differentiated themselves from other area photographers by specializing in custom portraits and pinup shoots, or what Joslyn likes to call “vintage portraiture.” They also do food photography, events, headshots and other “corporate stuff,” but pinup is what they’ve become known for, specifically Joslyn.

In their three years of photographing professionally, they’ve had clients come from as far as Australia, and they’ve done everything from re-creating scenes from “Mad Men” to shooting a male pinup calendar.

The self-proclaimed “antique addicts” have always had a passion for all things vintage, so they ensure that everything used in their shoots is authentic. From vintage swimsuits to old-school appliances, the couple has a lofted section of their studio that is

overflowing with all sorts of treasures they’ve found after scouring local businesses, such as Canned Ham Vintage and Braden River Antiques. The duo has so many props that they’re planning a sale on July 24 to make room for some new ones.

Pinup photography has an interesting history that few people understand, Mike says. Pinup girls were originally the subjects of drawings, not photographs.

He says posing people in the pinup style that renowned pinup illustrator and former Sarasota resident Gil Elvgren helped make iconic is difficult, because it wasn’t created to transcend the canvas.

“It’s a task and a half,” Mike says. “If you can imagine, you’re sitting on your back. Now, you’re arching your back. Then, you’ve got your legs straight up in the air, one curled slightly, toes pointed, then you have to turn at us and look like you’re having a good time.”

But the pair enjoys the challenge. Mike says that their business is built around unique requests — so much so that they took the “themes” section off of their website, because almost all of their customers come to them with an idea already in mind.

Offering champagne, a makeup artist and a rack of vintage wardrobe options, the Devaneys do whatever it takes to ensure a good experience. They stress their value of quality over quantity, which is evident in their policy of booking only one client a day. Unlike many photographers, Mike says, they don’t put a time limit on their sessions. Prices for a pinup package range from $350 to $750.

“You’re getting used to the camera; you’ve probably never done this before, and we want you to feel comfortable,” he says. “If you’re weirded out by the inside, let’s go outside. Let’s go to your house. I don’t care what we do, we just want to make sure that they have an awesome photo and that

they’re happy and confident.”

The couple agrees that they rarely get any clients who are 100% comfortable when they first come into the studio, especially when it comes to posing more sensually. Mike says that it wasn’t until he started photographing women that he realized how pinup shoots can help them feel more self-assured.

Clients tend to feel more at ease after their first few hours in the studio, the couple says, but the real reward comes when they see the finished product.

“We get a lot of people who say thank you to us for the confidence building,” Mike says. “When they come back and see the final result, they are blown away.”

Joslyn nods in agreement, and doesn’t bat an eye before answering what she enjoys most about her job.

“Making people happy,” she says. “Giving them photos that when they finally see, they say ‘Wow; I’m beautiful.’”

It’s something new to Sarasota, and as Santa Lucia describes it, it’s a lot of fun.

“It’s like an adult playground,” he says. “The selection is huge, so there’s a beer for everyone.

You don’t have to be a craft-beer expert. A lot of the fun is trying samples of something new.”

Santa Lucia grew up working in the restaurant industry in New Jersey. Six years ago, he moved to Sarasota, armed with his great grandmother’s pizza-sauce recipe, and opened Lucia’s Pizza Italian Grill.

He brings that experience — and recipe — to Oak & Stone. In addition to wood-fired artisanal pizza, he collaborated with TableSeide to create a menu offering a wide variety of American fare.

And for craft-cocktail lovers, there’s a separate full liquor bar.

“We wanted to bring a great bar to this area,” says Santa Lucia.

“I started doing some research, and I found out that the technology was available, and we decided to go for it.”

Santa Lucia and Decklever partnered with TableSeide Restaurant Group, owners of Libby’s Cafe and Bar and Louies Modern, to open Oak & Stone. Santa Lucia says the up-and-coming area was an ideal location, and they saw an opportunity to provide something unique.

Using technology called iPourIt, Oak & Stone puts the power in the customers’ hands. Well, on their wrists.

After opening a tab at the bar, each customer receives a bracelet, picks a glass and heads to the beer wall. The beer wall features two rows of 56 different draft beers, arranged by style. Each tap is outfitted with a 7-inch LCD screen, displaying the name of the beer and a brief description of its flavor profile, alcohol content and price per ounce.

After selecting a beer, customers scan the bracelet on the screen and pour as much — or as little — as desired. iPourIt charges in increments as small as 1/10 ounce, which is ideal for sampling or pouring flights. The system keeps track of the total tab cost, and customers pay at the end.

A built-in safety measure requires guests to check in with an employee after drinking 40 ounces of beer, to ensure they aren’t over served.

Ah, who hasn’t dreamed of flying? Along with perpetual youth, it’s probably one of humanity’s oldest fantasies.

Both dreams are at the heart of “Peter Pan,” opening this week at Venice Theatre.

Pan: “Dark and sinister man, have at thee!”

Wages begins clapping his hands and counting out a beat, and the clacking swordplay begins.

Hook swings his hook at Pan in a dirty move. It gets stuck in a block of wood. Gallant Pan doesn’t skewer him while he’s helpless, but gives his backside a whack with the flat of his sword.

Hook frees himself and gives chase. Pan flies away, spins back, sword aimed for Hook’s heart.

The pirate parries.

And that’s it. End scene. Take five. According to Andzulis, the scene is more than spectacle; it’s storytelling.

“My job is to serve the story,” he says. “‘Peter Pan’ is a story about a boy who can fly and doesn’t grow up — who teaches other kids to fly. Ideally, that’s what you see, and the technical side stays invisible.”

The play’s the thing, sure.

What goes on backstage is a thing too, and the cast is learning it all. As Andzulis sees it, Venice Theatre’s summer stock program is basically theater boot camp.

“Some talented young adults come together and master a lot of skills, including the art of flying,” he says. “We teach the actors how to hold their bodies, how to shift in the air.”

These skills can be taught, if the actors have what it takes.

This goes beyond knowledge; athleticism is a must. Having a strong core helps, but above all the actors need to be flexible.

Nelson serves the story, too.

sees the Venice Theatre flight crew, consults with Andzulis and Wages and makes sure everybody knows what they’re doing and everything works. He explains that each flying actor wears a harness with a quick-release, metal backplate. This snaps onto a cable, connected to tracks and pulleys in an overhead framework. The flight crew holding the other end of the cable supports about two-thirds of the actor’s weight; the performer supplies the momentum.

“The wires supporting the actors are much thinner than the ones in Mary Martin’s day,” he says. “Ideally, you won’t notice them at all.”

And the five minutes are up.

The actors take positions and draw their swords.

The previous scene repeats again and again. Wages counts the beat and critiques the scene.

They lose the hook-stuck-inthe-post gag and refine the arc of Pan’s flight. Right now, Sinclair swoops in for the kill, overshoots and winds up facing the wrong way. She tries to correct herself, but it doesn’t work.

“You see what happened?” says Nelson. “Flying isn’t like swimming.”

They refine the attack. This time, Pan sweeps back nicely.

Sinclair’s a quick study.

The clapping, counting and swordplay continues. At some point, somebody starts playing

the piano. Wages, Andzulis, and Nelson confer with the actors, bouncing suggestions off each other. Scene after scene, the free-form, collaborative brainstorming goes on. And each run is a little better than the last.

After an hour of this, it’s time for another break. Summer rain is pouring like BBs on the theater roof. The young actors don’t even look tired. They don’t mind a few questions.

Sinclair’s not afraid of flying. She’s done it once before, in “The Little Mermaid,” at Manatee Performing Arts Center. The mock swordplay is new, and she loves it.

“It feels fierce and cool,” she says. She credits director Wages

and Peter Ivanov for the “awesome” fight choreography.

Taking flight as Peter Pan has stretched her performing abilities and helped her add a new type of character to her range.

“I’m pretty girly and usually play girly characters,” she says.

“Playing a boy is a fun challenge.”

And Williams, an acting intern at the theater, is having fun, too.

“Who wouldn’t want to be a pirate?” he says with a laugh.

“But Pan can fly, and I can’t. It’s unfair! Hook keeps saying that, and I can really see his point.”

Sinclair smiles and shrugs, as if to say, “Neverland’s not fair.”

Break time is almost over.

Hours of painstaking attention to detail lie ahead. They’re still refining this one bit. The final sequence will last just 40 seconds, but Nelson says the preparation will be worth it. In the end, it won’t look like work.

And that’s the point.

Wages claps out a beat. The actors take positions and draw their swords.

And the fight is on.

Coming of Age Maria Wirries continues to sing beyond her years.

It’s an interesting thing watching what could be a major musical career unfold. We’ve been keeping eyes and ears on Maria Wirries since she was 11. She’s now about to turn 19, going into her junior year in Penn State’s music program. Every time we hear her, she’s grown even more into the performer she may become as she matures.

Wirries, a soprano with the lower extension of a mezzo, who can belt if a song calls for it, has always had an enormous stage presence. She enters stage right, and the house lights up.

This past weekend, the beautiful and talented young woman lit up the Glenridge Performing Arts Center with pianist Alan Jay Corey (who’s been her voice teacher and coach through most

of her earlier years) and the multitalented steel pan/drummer John Patti. Their program, taking Wirries “From the Caribbean to College and Back,” was something of a nightclub-cabaret act that she’d put together with entertaining and insightful comments, letting us glimpse into her raison d’être for each song.

Wirries has thankfully maintained her freshness, with a charming naiveté in her banter.

And her brilliantly youthful voice, while beautifully trained to go further, never pushes or over-reaches the abilities she has right now.

The first part of her program featured primarily songs from shows she loves and has participated in during her first years at Penn State. From “Home,” from “Phantom,” to the warmhearted “Creole Girl,” from “Nightsongs,” she never lost her

It’s just frustrating for us in the audience, because she seems so far beyond her years, we want to hear all of it. Now. The second half of the program focused on a wide variety of songs, from classics, including “Summertime” (sung in an arrangement that made good use of the steel pans and even had Wirries showing off her scat chops), to a charming morsel called “Hang on Little Tomato.”

Having changed from a glittering gold gown in the first half to a Haitian-inspired costume for the second, we were treated, not just to Wirries’ charm, but also to a brief but fascinating history of the steel pans, complete with demonstrations and looks inside the instruments by the verbal and dextrous John Patti.

If we were to get into the nitty gritty of this program, one might say there should have been more variety in Wirries’ choice of songs. Too often energy was subdued and her performances gave the impression she was singing only from the neck up, rather than giving us the full force of her very forceful personality and talent.

Then again, it was a wisely chosen program that kept her youth, fragility and intelligence in the forefront. It’s all there: the lyrical understanding, energetic performances and certainly a voice that will one day knock us out of our seats.

For now, she’s better off leaving us wanting more. It’s worth the wait.

enthusiasm for the music and the words. With impeccable diction that allowed us to understand every word of every song, Wirries managed to tell stories, turning herself into different characters, from the Baker’s Wife to the mid-century hippy from “Hair,” which she casually reminded us — making us feel our age — is now 50 years old.

But Wirries hasn’t cast off all childish things. When she’s nervous and feeling out her audience, she still occasionally resorts to what I call the “Maria Shrug,” a young mannerism she’s had since I’ve known her, that lifts an arm into the air and, with a bit of embarrassment, allows the arm to do a shoulder shrug and plop back onto her hip in a youthful but meaningless movement that she’ll soon outgrow.

Using the many tools in her box of vocal talent, Wirries is able to draw on the vastness and depth of her voice and musical understanding to weave a spell with her audience. What she doesn’t seem to realize, yet, is the enormity of those abilities and, when she’s using her upper register, she still sings with only part of what she has, trying to give shadings and nuances that she doesn’t quite know how to handle at this stage of her growth.

Very much to her credit, however, she never pushes, but rather, always keeps her young abilities in proportion to everything she’s doing. How tempting it must be to pull out all the stops, but she’s not only talented and well-trained, she’s
