Go to the Sarasota Opera during peak season, and you’ll see an audience of patrons happily filling the red velour seats. The same can be said for the Sarasota Orchestra or Asolo Repertory Theatre — there’s no question that the arts are well received in Sarasota. But, there’s a disconcerting trend at every arts venue; the amount of young audience members can almost be counted on both hands.

The organizers behind the Sarasota Culture Collective hope to change that. It’s a membership program that gives young adults who purchase the $99 membership two tickets to each of seven area arts performances with preand post-show cocktail events.

But, more than that, McAllister says, the focus group said it was an intimidation factor. What do I wear; when do I clap; what is it?

No one wants to feel like the odd man out.

“The idea is that it’s something my parents or grandparents do, or that there may not be something I’ll relate to, or that it’s only Beethoven and ‘Swan Lake,’” she says.

Ambassador for the Culture Collective, one face behind the group promoting the membership, is 26-year-old commercial insurance broker Natalie Roderick.

Roderick moved one year ago to Sarasota from Los Angeles.

She didn’t attend the arts at Courtesy first because she was uneducated about the programming. That’s why the Culture Collective includes programs from each venue that will appeal to this demographic with events catered specifically to them.

If a whole group of her friends were attending, Roderick said she’d be more inclined to go. As an example, a large group of her friends decided to get season passes to Busch Gardens so that there would always be someone with whom to go. She hopes the same for the Culture Collective.

“And, even if you don’t know anyone, there’s going to be a social hour so you can meet people,” she says.

This spring, Roderick went to

She took a backstage tour, met the cast and loved it so much, she went back for a second time.

The pre-and-post events will include educational aspects, such as tours and talks to give young people the opportunity to connect personally and intimately with the productions, just as Roderick did.

what performances might appeal to her: “because they don’t advertise to (young people),” she says. But if there were a membership program catered to her to tell her what she’d enjoy, she’d buy it. Upon finding out about Sarasota Culture Collective, she’s already asking where she can get her tickets.

“That’s fantastic,” she says. “I will totally do that!”

The Village de Chefs guidebook, launched in January, serves as an introduction to the chefs and their homes. On Chef José Martinez' page, he writes about his favorite places in Sarasota (including The Ringling, Vizen and State Street Eating House + Cocktails). hef José Martinez could care less about receiving coveted cooking awards. He sits in his small white-curtained restaurant, Maison Blanche, on Longboat Key, where he’s discussing the upcoming Village de Chefs festival, coming Oct. 8 and 9, to Sarasota. It’s an event he spearheaded.

Asked about the Michelin star, the highest cooking honor he received in France, Martinez shrugs. He muses a nonchalant, “Ehhh,” in regard to having the highest Zagat ratings in Sarasota. And, before he’s asked about the nomination for the James Beard Award of Best Chef South in 2010, he relays a story about a food writer who called him to ask how the nomination felt.

“I upset him because I didn’t know what was a James Beard Award,” Martinez says in mostly

// FOOD&COOKING perfect English cloaked in a thick French accent. He smiles and shrugs again. He knows what it is now, of course, but he still doesn’t pay any mind to having been nominated.

It’s not that Martinez doesn’t care about the designations he has received; he’s just not consumed by press or publicity — even the signage deeming the easy-to-miss establishment simply reads, “Restaurant.” Martinez finds value in pleasing patrons with exceptional culinary explorations. Period.

Here’s the irony: It was a journalist’s interview that inspired the nonprofit association he co-founded, Village de Chefs.

The association is an exclusive group of French chefs who have moved from France to five continents around the world and like to share their culinary expertise and adventures. And, au contraire, Martinez is happy to publicize the fact that the chefs from this association are coming to Sarasota to share their knowledge with our community and budding chefs.

Village de Chefs came to be when Parisian food writer Marie Anne Page called her friend, Martinez, in 2006. She wanted to write a magazine article about him, but he didn’t think there was any sense in doing so, because he had moved in 2002 from France to Longboat Key. “I say, ‘Maybe it’s a good idea to do something online about French chefs outside of France,’” Martinez says. Page thought it was a great idea, too, and knew of another great French chef who had moved to Vietnam, Didier Corlou.

Both chefs had explored the cuisines of their new countries and combined them with French cuisine and techniques. For instance, Martinez serves American-braised short ribs with French potatoes. The association would allow these chefs to share their knowledge, bring in new ideas and share them with the rest of the world. Since that first year, they have added chefs with the same mentality. The group has grown to include 35 French chefs spanning five continents.

The group, or “the Villagers,” as they refer to themselves, launched their first guidebook in January, which features each chef, his current town, a little

about each town and a recipe.

Four of the members launched the book with a dinner at Maison Blanche and a breakfast videoconference with the rest of the chefs.

The group has met annually in Paris to partner with culinary schools and spread its knowledge to the future chefs of the world. But Martinez thought it might get staid to always meet in Paris, and that they should spread their culinary wealth to other locations — and why not start with one founder’s current hometown during the perfect time of year to visit?

Meeting with the students is the most important part of why

the group gets together; the Villagers hope to inspire students to work to the highest culinary standards. Martinez explains that he hopes to open students’ minds to understanding that culinary school will teach the important basics — “the 10%.”

But it’s when working in the field and climbing the culinary ladder that you learn the other 90%.

He wants them to be able to ask questions. And these famed chefs from around the globe will share the table with them — they’re all on one level, Michelin stars and James Beard nominations aside.

“I think it’s important for the (culinary) field and its evolution,” he says.

formances, and representing the Artist Series, itself, was the well-known cabaret singer, KT Sullivan, leading off each segment with a song from Cole Porter to Stephen Sondheim and then easily seguing into her role as emcee and host with a style that rolled Sophie Tucker and Mae West into one.

This was not the kind of event one reviews because the spectrum of abilities was so wide, it would be unfair to attempt a critique. The very idea that some 160 performers could pull together presentations before their real seasons even started is something to inspire pride in the listener. The most important thing is that Sarasota’s vast array of talented, avid performers sets this city apart from most others. Our orchestras, choruses, soloists, dancers and actors have chosen to live here, because Sarasota offers them venues and audiences that feed their talents. Whether they are Juilliard-trained professionals or musicloving amateurs, Sarasota is a magnificent artists’ colony that inspires pride in audiences and performers, alike. And the Artist Series Concerts must be commended for bringing them all together to spread their joy.

That’s a lesson The Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota has always known and practiced.

In 2012, the group, which usually presents concerts and recitals by world-renowned musicians, turned to hometown talent with its first Celebrate Sarasota — that series of performances took place in nine venues in six days.

This time, the group chose September instead of June, and, although expanding the concept, it limited the venue to the Sarasota Opera House and jam-packed 19 groups into two performances, which took place Sunday afternoon and evening.

How did they do it? The Artist Series Concerts paid for everything — with some inkind help from foundations and underwriters — and the performing ensembles not only got time in the spotlight, they also got free ads in the program book. Even the city of Sarasota proclaimed Sunday “Celebrate Sarasota Day.” “Ticket sales pretty much cover our costs,” said John Fischer, executive director of the series. “Participating ensembles have no financial obligation at all. And the audience members will each get a tote bag at the end of the performances with the names of all the participants listed.” Certainly a win-win situation for everyone.

The thing is, each organization is responsible for its presentation and that means each is represented as it is, so it was a great smorgasbord of talent — amateur and professional — that appeared Sunday under the auspices of the Artist Series Concerts. But, it was Lee Dougherty Ross, the artistic director of the series, who had the idea to do this presentation in the first place. She proved, with great enthusiasm and pride, that Sarasota does, indeed, have more culture per capita than Manhattan, N.Y. Heading both the matinee and evening per-
