+ Resident’s birthday takes the cake Whether she’s at a fashion show, wine tasting or card party, Longboat Harbour resident Rose Tomason always manages to get her picture in the Longboat Observer. That’s why when Tomason celebrated a big birthday over the weekend, her family decided it was big news. They had a cake made by Cakes by Design in Lakewood Ranch that looked like a stack of Longboat Observers, with Tomason taking her rightful place on the front page. The headline announced, “Family gathers in celebration.” And the top Our Town of the special issue proclaimed, “Rose Tomason appointed social director of Longboat Key.”
Temple Beth Israel Rabbi Jonathan Katz
+ Challah soars to new heights Temple Beth Israel member Connie Mederos-Jacobs crafted a challah during the recent High Holy Days in the shape of a dove, based on this verse from Isaiah: “As hovering birds, will the Lord protect Jerusalem.” It’s not the first time Mederos-Jacobs has crafted challah with symbolic meaning in keeping with tradition. Last year, she made a ladder challah to recall Jacob’s dream of being linked to God.
Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant & Pub owner Ed Chiles is having trouble getting a restaurant renovation-and-expansion application for an additional 11 seats to be heard at Town Hall. On Tuesday morning, those troubles continued. At the recommendation of town attorney Maggie MooneyPortale, a hearing for an amend-
ed special exception to allow Chiles to move forward with building a second-story tree house and adding 11 seats to his restaurant was postponed as soon as the Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board’s Tuesday meeting began. That’s because Longbeach Village resident Corinne Ragheb submitted an objection to the

plan around 4 p.m. Monday that town officials want more time to review. The objection states that a special exception that the Planning and Zoning Board recommended and the Longboat Key Town Commission approved in 2010 that previously allowed for the additional 11 seats at Mar Vista expired Nov. 16, 2011.
The objection states that neither Mar Vista nor the commission sought an extension of the original site-plan exception. Therefore, the objection states, the planning board can’t amend the plan or recommend its approval to the commission. Staff and the town attorney

Former manager gets three years Judy Paul was ordered to serve 10 years probation and pay $200,000 in restitution to Sand Cay after she completes her prison sentence. Former Sand Cay manager Judy Paul was sentenced Sept. 13 to three years in prison followed by 10 years of probation on a charge of scheming to defraud. Judge Thomas W. Krug also ordered Paul, 49, to pay $200,000 restitution to Sand Cay. Krug also agreed to allow Paul to post a supersedeas bond of $100,000 while her attorneys appeal the case on the conditions that she live with her parents in Ohio and doesn’t take a job that involves handling money while her case is pending. A Manatee County jury convicted Paul in July on charges of grand theft of more than $100,000 and of scheming to defraud in the amount of $50,000 or more. The conviction stems from a series of checks totaling more than $200,000 that Paul allegedly deposited into her personal account during the three-anda-half years she worked at the 60-unit Longboat Key resort. Paul was fired in 2010 after a routine audit revealed inconsistencies. When confronted, she insisted she had a verbal agreement with the board’s treasurer, which police said records did not support. Prosecutors sought a 10-year sentence followed by 20 years of probation. Attorneys for Paul, who has been held in Manatee County Jail since her conviction, argued for a sentence of time served followed by 10 years of probation. Krug sentenced Paul, who has no previous criminal record, on the lesser of
