+ Big birthday Sarasota resident Pennie Williams was surprised when nearly 60 of her friends from Sarasota Silver Stars and family members from as far as California surprised her with a 90th birthday party July 28. Her birthday was July 20, and her daughter, Barbara Bostic, arranged a celebration at Longboat Key’s Bayport Beach and Tennis Club. Judging by Pennie’s smile, followed shortly by tears of happiness, the surprise was executed perfectly.

Caragiulo announces bid for Barbetta’s seat

Citing a desire for an economically sustainable county and frustration with the city, Paul Caragiulo will seek to succeed Joe Barbetta on the County Commission in 2014. With the support of County Commissioner Joe Barbetta, City Commissioner Paul Caragiulo announced Wednesday he will run for Barbetta’s county seat in 2014. Caragiulo signaled his intent to champion many of the same causes Barbetta has backed; Barbetta will reach his term limit in November 2014. In explaining his decision to run for the county seat, Caragiulo said the county’s approach to development is more in line with his — and Barbetta’s — desire to draw investors into the county. “With the county, I think there’s definitely a much better attitude of welcoming investment, a more proactive sort of philosophy when it comes to that,” Caragiulo said. Caragiulo said he wanted to emphasize that welcoming investment is not something that can be taken for granted, and that he hoped to continue Barbetta’s efforts in that regard. “My philosophy is to ensure the sustainability of the community,” Caragiulo said. “One way to do that is to invite investment, welcome economic development and to look for opportunities that way.” Barbetta said he first ap-

County Commissioner Joe Barbetta, left, hopes that City Commissioner Paul Caragiulo, right, will take his seat on the County Commission once his second and final term ends in 2014. Caragiulo plans to continue Barbetta’s efforts and has cited philosophical differences with city commissioners as a reason to the transition.

Chalk Festival redraws its boundaries The 2013 Sarasota Chalk Festival will be more spread out and span fewer days than last year. Some downtown businesses are looking forward to the expected influx of patrons.

Burns Court merchants concerned about street closures during the 2013 Sarasota Chalk Festival might see some relief this year. According to festival organizer Denise Kowal, this year’s festival will be more spread out and span fewer days. She is proposing that the festival, which normally takes place on Pineapple Avenue in Burns Court, expand

north this year along the same street between Orange Avenue and First Street, with the Children’s Chalk Block taking place in Selby Five Points Park. The festival will take place from Nov. 13 to Nov. 18 — six days, compared to last year’s 10. “Our vision was always to have the festival span the whole length of Pineapple Avenue,” says Kowal. “The

event was meant to draw tourism to downtown, and we want everyone to have a great experience. We want people to be able to be up close and personal with the artists and artwork, and, hopefully, this will help disperse the crowds.” In previous years, Burns Court
