+ Son shares East County news Every time 3-year-old Clark Berry heads to the grocery store with his mom, Sarah, he picks up a copy of the East County Observer to deliver to his dad, Jeff. “We get one every time,” said Sarah Berry, a Heritage Harbour resident.

Sarasota Baptist Church celebrated the opening of its Lakewood Ranch campus in December 2007. The three-story, 50,000-square-foot building included 25 classrooms and a multi-purpose auditorium that can seat up to 850 people. It also is attached to a pre-existing building, which Sarasota Baptist acquired in 2003; the structure, which was converted to accommodate children and youth, previously housed University

LAKEWOOD RANCH — The Center for Building Hope, a Lakewood Ranch-based nonprofit that provides free programs and services for cancer patients and their families, is positioning itself for the national stage. But, to start, the organization will focus on a new affiliation with the renowned Moffitt Cancer Center, in Tampa. The two organizations this week announced an affiliation that will expand Center for Building Hope’s services to Moffitt, allowing the organization to provide onsite programming there. “It’s a big project,” said Andrea Feldmar, Center for Building Hope’s program director. “We’re doing our due diligence (to see what we still need to do). We’re going to work out the details and the strategy (in the coming weeks). It’s a quantum leap in growth for us.” The affiliation with Moffitt has been actively in negotiations since October 2012, at which time officials from Moffitt toured the center’s Lakewood Ranch campus. Feldmar said the two organizations still are finalizing details of the agreement, but Center for Building Hope plans to offer onsite programs at Moffitt’s two existing facilities, as well as one that currently is under construction. Programming, which will be similar to what is offered at CBH’s campus and may include yoga, art or nutrition classes and educational forums with specialists on cancertreatment options, is expected to start this fall. Moffitt’s Dr. Sarah Hoffe, a radiation oncologist, will serve as liaison for the project, Feldmar said. Feldmar said the affiliation also provides opportunities for videobased educational programming, for which cancer specialists at Moffitt could lead discussions on new

BEGINNINGS Sarasota Baptist Church’s Lakewood Ranch campus now has its own identity — Lakewood Ranch Baptist. The churches officially became separate entities July 1.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — As Lee Rich and Andy Wells walk the hallways of their home church, they are stepping on new, yet familiar, territory. Lakewood Ranch Baptist Church — formerly Sarasota Baptist Church’s satellite campus — officially formed July 1. “This is exciting; it’s a great starting point,” said Rich, who has been with the church for about eight years. “We hope to have a big kick off (Aug. 18).” She and Wells, the church’s only full-time employees, are, in many ways, spearheading the transition. Rich, Lakewood Ranch Baptist’s office manager, has been

busy transferring accounts, setting up bookkeeping, ordering new business cards and handling other details. Wells, the church’s youth pastor, has been overseeing changes as well, and even helped create the church’s new logo. “My graphic-design background is coming in handy,” he said, smiling. The two hope the church’s sign off University Parkway can be changed soon to say Lakewood Ranch Baptist Church, but the modification still is in permitting with Sarasota County. “We’re still in the process

of working out many details,” Rich said.
