+ Respected colleague Colleagues honored American Jewish Committee’s Westcoast Regional Director Brian Lipton with the AJC’s Regional Staff Excellence Lipton Award in June, at its annual meeting, The Global Forum, in Washington D.C. Lipton was the only staff member to earn the prestigious award from any of the 25 regional offices in the United States. The award is given annually to employees who demonstrate AJC’s core values respect, teamwork, integrity, excellence and accountability.
Responding to requests from Laurel Park residents to change current zoning procedures, the City Commission approved Monday the creation of an overlay district that will allow greater neighborhood oversight over significant developments in the
area. The Laurel Park Overlay District will require two public workshops when a proposed development in the district exceeds current zoning regulations before a building permit or administrative site plan application may be
approved. One meeting must be held before an application is submitted, and the second is held after the application is submitted but before approval may be granted by city staff. The boundaries of the parcels within the Laurel Park Overlay
District are located on Rawls Avenue on the east, Morrill Street on the north, Julia Place and Lafayette Court on the west and Alderman Street and Brother Geenen Way on the south.

LIGHT FIXTURES

City stands behind red-light cameras A year-and-a-half after the first cameras were installed, Sarasota is satisfied with the effectiveness of its red-light camera program. INSIDE Red-light cameras by the numbers / PAGE 2A
Sarasota Police officer John Lake has a simple metric for determining the effectiveness of the city’s red-light cameras. “If you went out there, and you happened to do a study, and you asked 10 people if they happened
to pay more attention to red lights in the city of Sarasota because of the cameras, all of them would say yes,” Lake said. Although Lake said the city is pleased with the program to date, he said there’s no plan to
add more cameras at this time. The city installed cameras in two phases — 10 beginning in December 2011 and another 10 earlier this year. The city chose the intersections it determined to be the most dangerous to house the cameras.
