+ Two Key couples celebrate milestones Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key President Richard Crawford and his wife, Yvonne, celebrated their 45-year anniversary June 15. Their first date was Feb. 14, 1964. They went to a movie and McDonald’s. Since that date under the golden arches, you could say they’ve upgraded. The Crawfords celebrated their anniversary at the Omni Amelia Plantation Resort. Crawford’s fellow Kiwanian, Longboat Key resident Weldon Frost and his wife, Brenda, celebrated their 45th anniversary June 28. The couple was married June 28, 1968, by the British Consul in the British Embassy in Tripoli, Libya. After the ceremony, the consul told Frost the “rule of thumb”: “Mr. Frost, I have to tell you that under British common law you are forbidden to beat your wife with a stick thicker than your thumb.” Frost reports that he has been a stickler for that rule. He also clearly follows another rule of thumb: Take your wife out on your anniversary. The Frosts celebrated their anniversary over dinner at Harry’s Continental Kitchens.

Longboat Key taxpayers could see a tax increase for the town’s operating expenses starting in October. That’s because the Longboat Key Town Commission voted at its Monday, July 1 regular meeting on a maximum millage rate

for the 2013-14 fiscal year that’s higher than the current rate of 1.8872 mills. Commissioners voted 6-0 (Commissioner Lynn Larson was absent from the meeting) for a maximum operating millage rate of 2.1372 mills. Combined with a

debt service millage rate of 0.0560 mills, the total maximum millage rate could be 2.1932 mills when the new budget begins Oct. 1. One mill equals $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property valuation. The extra mills, if approved in

September, would generate an additional $1 million for the town. Vice Mayor David Brenner made the recommendation to raise the maximum rate to prepare for rising pension costs and other looming expenses. “If I had my druthers, I would add $1 million to our budget for pension-related expenses,”

SERVICE SALUTE Kurt Schultheis

The Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key was able to give one of its longtime members the recognition he deserves at the club’s June 27 meeting. Dick Baum, a longtime resident of Longboat Key who now resides at Plymouth Harbor, attended the meeting with his wife, Jean, to receive a pin for 25 years of service with Kiwanis. Baum refused to accept the award until he was well enough to come to breakfast.

Here’s what Sarasota city staff didn’t find at Save Our Seabirds during an unannounced inspection June 20: rats or black mold. The facility was clean, filled with visitors and free of rats and dead birds. The rats, along with black

mold, were there insisted former volunteers and a former employee during Monday’s Sarasota City Commission meeting. Commissioners were concerned enough about the allegations that they asked staff to investigate further. The commission ordered the

initial investigation after former SOS volunteer Greg Para presented a sworn affidavit during a June 19 joint meeting of the Sarasota City Commission and Sarasota County Commission that included multiple allegations, including that he had seen rats kill or maim

birds on more than one occasion; that the birdcages and pumping systems for the aviary are not adequate and violate the city lease; that the facility does not have permits to care for parrots; and
