+ Rabbi’s help goes shofar in Hawaii When Rabbi Jonathan Katz blew the shofar recently at a wedding he officiated in Hawaii, he joked he was blowing on a Jewish conch shell. The next morning, he and his friend, Rabbi Neal Katz (no relation), headed to the beach and spotted two women holding shofars nearly identical to the one Katz had blown the night before. They were trying to blow the shofars but could hardly make a sound. Needless to say, they were shocked when two rabbis seemingly appeared out of nowhere to give them a lesson. The women asked the rabbis to offer a prayer, so they chanted the Shehechianu, a praising of the opportunity to experience such a wonderful occasion. Then, they offered a prayer giving thanks for the opportunity to practice shofar blowing with unexpected help from two rabbis.
+ Webb to lead USTA Florida Foundation The United States Tennis Association Florida Section Foundation appointed B.J. Webb as volunteer president of the organization. The foundation is the charitable arm of the USTA Florida Section. Webb is an avid tennis player and community tennis volunteer who also serves as chairwoman of the Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board. And there’s another title she currently holds: bride to be. She’s currently planning an October wedding with fiancé Dave Bishop.
Town Manager Dave Bullock is giving the 11 members of the Longboat Key Police Department Union until June 28, to decide upon one of three retirement options. Whatever the union chooses will be a drastic change from its current retirement option, in which officers put 10% of their

paychecks into a pension plan the town is determined to close before Oct. 1. Bullock is offering the union two different pension options with the Florida Retirement System (FRS). The first is similar to the FRS option Longboat Key firefighter/ paramedics took earlier this year, when they agreed to split required
FRS contributions 50/50, with the town’s maximum contribution capped at 13%, according to their agreement. The contract also gave firefighters a 3% wage increase. But with FRS pension costs rising, police officers are leery about taking an FRS option that could take more money out of their paychecks after the town reaches its
cap. That leaves another option that might be more appealing to officers. Since the start of negotiations in March, Bullock has offered a 401(a) retirement plan that includes a 3% pay increase and

Whitney Beach likely to raise the bar Plaza owner Richard Juliani says a new bar and liquor store are coming to the old Tiny’s — but don’t raise those glasses just yet. There’s a lot of buzz in town about a new bar opening at Whitney Beach Plaza in the space that used to be home to Tiny’s of Longboat Key. But don’t raise your glasses just yet. Plaza owner Richard Juliani confirmed to the Longboat Observer that a bar and liquor store are coming to the shopping center and that he hopes to be a partner in the venture. But, as of Monday night, that’s all he could confirm. “Anything more than a handshake, it hasn’t happened yet,” he said. “We haven’t determined who the partners will be. A lot of people are jumping the gun.” It may not be a done deal, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning. The rumored partner: Sam Lastinger, a trained chef and former bartender at Pattigeorge’s.

Tiny’s closed in 2010; Professional Touch temporarily moved to the main Whitney Beach building. The Longboat Observer was unable to reach Lastinger. Juliani said he’s been in negotiations with two separate partners but declined to name names until a lease is signed, which he said could happen
later this week or next week. Meanwhile, Engel & Völkers Longboat Key announced last week that it would open in the plaza no later than August — making it the plaza’s first new
