arasota Ballet dancers departed SRQ Airport Monday, June 3, to head to Washington, D.C. They shared the giddy kind of excitement you might get seeing snow for the first time. Appropriately enough, the dancers’ performance, “Les Patineurs,” is set at a snow-filled, Victorian-era, skating party.

The company was invited to perform at the Kennedy Center among the top companies in the nation in “Ballet Across America III” — sharing three performances in a bill that would also feature Washington Ballet and Pennsylvania Ballet from June 4 through June 9.

For former D.C. resident Ellen Overstreet, in her first season with the company, it was a lot like coming home; although, instead of to her childhood home, she’d share a room with Sareen Tchekmedyian at State Plaza Hotel — the same hotel Pennsylvania Ballet was also staying. The dancers returned to the hotel only to put their heads on their pillows after days full of sightseeing, class and rehearsals.

“I grew up watching major companies perform at the opera house, and now I’m on the other side (of the stage),” Overstreet says. “So it’s a dream come true.”

The dancers would wake up early, go sightseeing and then take dance class with members of the companies with whom they would perform. In the evenings, they would go out to eat (a few even went to Overstreet’s parents’ house for a family dinner). day night cast-member party, and reunited with friends from companies they had danced with before Sarasota Ballet. The day of opening night, they’d have 50 minutes on the stage for a dress rehearsal of their performance. The dancers shared feelings of excitement mixed with nerves.

“They were all incredible,” Overstreet says of the companies she had already seen. “I feel like we’re all kind of alike — we’re all great companies with really strong dancers.”

But, it seems Sarasota Ballet gracefully skated its way into the audience’s heart as a crowd favorite. Sarasota Ballet Managing Director Mary Anne Ser-

 That’s a Wrap!

As of June 13, the filming of “The Lucky 6” has wrapped. A few weeks ago, I sat among FSU/Asolo Conservatory students and potential donors to watch a rough cut of the rough trailer for “The Lucky 6.” It’s a fulllength feature film that, unless I didn’t know was created as part of the The Summer Feature Film Program through the nonprofit collaboration between FSU/Asolo Conservatory and Ringling College of Art and Design, I’d assume I was watching a professional indie trailer.

The filming of “The Lucky 6” was accomplished in four-and-a-half weeks via 12-hour days among the 54 student and alumni participants with a budget of $150,000. Mind you, the program’s competitor, Chapman University, utilized a $1.25 million budget to do the very same thing — that’s around $10,000 a day. But judging by the trailer, the final product makes it look like a lot more money, time and crew were utilized.

Here’s one scene broken down.

A character drives up to an office building (or to the real-life Academic Center) in a Lamborghini (the kind of Lamborghini that fewer than 10 people in the world own, but one of those 10 was graciously donated to the college for filming).

A donated construction crane, The SuperTechno, follows the driver after he exits the car and walks in the building; and, then, the crane, which has a camera attached to it, scales up the outside of the building, as the character climbs multiple stories in the elevator, follows him as he walks down the hallway and heads into an office. These are high-quality cameras, and the best in the industry.

The freebies Ringling utilized saved thousands and thousands of dollars, yet achieved the same effects a professional feature-film has.

According to Tony Stopperan, executive director, the film’s postproduction is expected to finish by Thanksgiving and they hope to debut the film in April at a film festival — they have their fingers crossed they make the submission for the Sarasota Film Festival and can unveil it there.

 WBTT says, “Guten Tag!” Last June, members of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe visited Detmold, Germany, on an all-expense paid trip via part-time Sarasotan and generous patron Horst Thurau.

As of Thursday, June 6, the cast of “Soul Crooners 2” (but substitute Nate Jacobs with CEO Christine

Jennings) was heading back for a repeat visit. You can follow their journey on the group’s Facebook page where they are posting photos.

Sarasota Music Festival: If you haven’t had the chance to attend one of Sarasota Orchestra’s Sarasota Music Festival concerts yet, you’re in luck this weekend. Talented college-aged students from across the country learn from the pros and play side-by-side on stage with them. “Songs of Amour” starts at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, at Holley Hall, 709 N. Tamiami Trail. Tickets are $20 to $25. “A Musical Melange starts at 8 p.m.

Friday, June 14, at Sarasota Opera House, 61 N. Pineapple Ave. Tickets are $25 to $40. “Walk in Nature” starts at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Sarasota Opera House. Tickets are $29 to $55.

 Little miss can’t be wrong In 2010, Diversions featured then eighth-grader Olivia Little who made headlines with her singling talent.

Then, she was heading to New York to meet with music managers and to Nashville to record a country-pop album.

But now, the 16-year-old has decided she’s not a country singer — she’s a little more Rock ‘n’ Roll. Little has big things going on. The attractive blonde has been working with Anthony Kirzan, the lead-guitarist for 1990s rock band Spin Doctors (remember the song “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong”?). She just returned home to Sarasota from writing three songs with him. There’s going to be a single available in July on iTunes — YourObserver.com will keep you posted on any future Olivia Little news.

McLendon showcases Ringling’s modern art A large fluffy cloud, leftover from Sanford Biggers’ “Codex” exhibit, sits atop a bookshelf in Matthew McLendon’s office. On one of the shelves is a framed photo of McLendon, The Ringling’s curator of modern and contemporary art, taken at the opening of his exhibit, “Beyond Bling: Voices of Hip Hop in Art.” On another shelf, there’s a poster of Swiss kineticsound sculptor Zimoun’s work, another exhibit McLendon curated in Sarasota.

Before he joined The Ringling’s staff in January 2010, there wasn’t an emphasis on post 1850s art.

From behind his desk, the tall redhead explains, when he first arrived, the museum already had its fair share of modern and contemporary art. He’s had to work hard to dispel the impression that The Ringling doesn’t have modern art.

One-third of The John and Mable Ringling Museum’s permanent collection is modern and contemporary art, not including the circus collection.

“People just weren’t aware that we had these types of holdings,” he says. “That was really my first goal: to get some of this out of the vault and in front of people on a consistent and prolonged basis.”

He also brings in packaged exhibits, like “Herb Ritts: L.A. Style,” curated exhibits that travel from other museums to Sarasota. For these, he helps prepare the layout, colors of the wall and look of the gallery.

Matthew McLendon looks over the gallery design for “American Moderns” with Carolyn Hannon, the exhibition designer. Hannon is new on staff at The Ringling. one of the first packaged exhibits he booked when he started (the museum works many years ahead of schedule).

Because there’s not a broad or deep collection of American art from these decades in the permanent collection, the packaged exhibits are a way to expose viewers to the artwork.

And, as his office décor indicates, he’s curated many unique

exhibits for The Ringling since he started. His first big project was the James Turrell Skyspace installation, of which he’s particularly proud.

And the modern and contemporary art for which he is responsible extends beyond the visual, into the performing arts, creating a synergy between the two.

In fact, the showcase of contemporary visual and performing

arts, via “Art of Our Time,” is an initiative developed from conversations between McLendon and Dwight Currie, associate director of museum programs, in McLendon’s first year.

In addition to his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. in art, McLendon also has a degree in classical voice. He thinks that coming from a performing-arts background into the visual arts makes him

think differently than most: “I don’t see genres. And I think genres are increasingly unimportant in contemporary art,” he says.

He gives the example of New York-based artist R. Luke DuBois, who McLendon says is “a new media artist who defies categorization.” McLendon is currently working on the first survey exhibition of DuBois to open in January at The Ringling. DuBois is temporarily living in Sarasota to work closely with McLendon in developing the exhibit, including a new piece that the artist will unveil. McLendon thinks Sarasotans have been incredibly gracious and welcoming to modern and contemporary art, and he’s sure they’ll love “American Moderns.”

But, nothing compares to opening a show he has curated — like the upcoming DuBois exhibit this winter.

“When it’s a show that you’ve worked on for three or five years to bring it together — it’s tremendous,” he says.

The front entrance was relocated to the side, the two small guest bedrooms were combined into one, and most important, the parking slab in the rear was replaced with a twostory garage with a studio above, and an interior caged courtyard with a swimming pool. The result is a space that manages to be both hip and urban, yet a tropical paradise, all at the same time.

If the two men fit so well into the Gillespie Park lifestyle, it’s because they know the drill. In Chicago they lived in Lakewood Balmoral, on the north side of the city near the lake. It’s a similar sort of place, with older homes that have been lovingly renovated and a strong sense of community involvement.

Home in Chicago was a threestory Victorian that they bought 20 years ago, and remodeled so well that it was sold in four days — at the height of the recession — and for more that the asking price. The new owner even bought most of their furniture.

That’s fine with Charles. When it comes to Victorian, he says, “Been there, done that.”

The Gillespie Park home is much more contemporary. The interior suggests a newer, upscale Florida house, with wellproportioned rooms, a state-ofthe-art kitchen and high-end finishes. The furniture is modern, at least downstairs. In the living room, a pair of Barcelona

chairs face a squared-off sofa from Living Walls, with a gasburning fireplace and a large, abstract painting serving as the focal point. The former entrance has been converted to a private porch overlooking the park, making a pleasant place to watch the joggers and dog walkers go by.

Facing the pool courtyard is a dining room/family room, the TV concealed in a large storage unit from IKEA. The couple’s collection of pottery and other ceramic pieces decorate the walls.

The pool has a cascading water feature that’s pleasant in the evenings when the owners leave the doors open to enjoy the breeze.

The studio over the garage currently serves as Dan’s office — he works as an IT consultant for Capital One Finance — but it has a bath and kitchen and could serve a variety of possible uses.

Upstairs in the main house the décor changes, going back in time with a few choice antiques to remind the couple of their Chicago days. A clunky Jacuzzistyle tub in the master bath was switched out for a more dramatic stand-alone version. And what looks like custom built-in dressers are actually IKEA finds as well. “Amazingly, they fit perfectly,” Charles says. “We just added the granite tops.”

Another lesson the men learned from Chicago was the importance of community involvement in a neighborhood like Gillespie Park. Charles serves as secretary of the Gillespie Park Neighborhood Association, and the group

scaping and traffic control. A recent project got students from the nearby Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences involved in a com-

petition painting benches in the park, the result being a lively new look.

Gillespie Park is definitely turning a corner. More and more of its 1920s bungalows and 1950s ranches are being renovated.

There is new construction again.

A large house in the modern style is going up at the south end of the park, and more are being planned. And with its perfect location — it is the northern edge of downtown, with Sarasota’s best restaurants and cultural activities just a sort stroll away — the future is unlimited. “It’s really happening,” says Charles. “Gillespie Park is a gem waiting to be polished.”

Michael Polley narrates “Stories We Tell.” look. She also casts actors to portray her parents when they were young. All the while, she is interacting and filming with Michael as he narrates. It’s beyond unique.

What might have been a movie about sad reminiscing, “Stories We Tell,” is, at times, hilarious, always insightful and so riveting that it borders on being a thriller. Most of all, it’s amazing to watch Polley direct as she peels back the layers of her life. It must have been unimaginable to take this journey and stand back at the same time while documenting it.

Polley comments, “ ... the truth about the past is often ephemeral and difficult to pin down.”

Just as we think her story has come to an end, a mind-blowing revelation takes place as the credits begin rolling. It’s a stroke of genius.

Director Sarah Polley describes her new film, “Stories We Tell,” as “an interrogation process” rather than a documentary. But, moreover, it’s about a mystery, which has shrouded her very existence, and the steadfast search for the truth.

When Polley was 13, her sister drops a bombshell: “Your dad’s not your real dad.”

And, for years after her mother’s death (Polley was 11 at the time), there were constant references by her four older siblings to that “fact.”

Polley decides to set the record straight by having family members and friends tell their own stories in their own words.

Her “father,” Michael, who has written a memoir about his beloved wife, Diane, narrates the film. In the ’60s, Michael was acting in a play and the guileless Diane fell headover-heels for him. In a candid observation, Michael states he’s fairly certain she fell in love with the character he was portraying.

After years of marriage and his inability to be that character, Diane had an affair.

The versions of each interviewee are quite varied. Polley is left with nagging uncertainties, until she inadvertently meets a man who claims to be her biological father. A DNA test confirms it, but is is far from the end of her fascinating story.

Polley has established herself as a distinguished actor (“The Sweet Hereafter”), director (“Away From Her”), writer (“Take This Waltz”) and producer. But she creates a whole new genre of filmmaking in “Stories We Tell.” She shoots scenes in Super 8, which gives the film a home-movie feel and

THEATER // FST Improv Florida Studio Theatre kicked off its summer season last Saturday with what is forecast to be two scorching months of sizzling silliness. Improvisation is all about jumping from the frying pan into the fire, so when cast member and lead Improv teaching artist Adam Ratner tells us, “It’s gonna be a hot, hot, hot summer with FST Improv,” we know to be prepared to slather on the sunburn ointment after every performance.

FST Improv Creator and Director Rebecca Hopkins warmed up last night’s show, prepping the audience for a participatory evening of unpredictable mayhem, as well as the accompanying unavoidable flop-sweat on the part of the troupe. Improv is very much enhanced by its audience, and one highlight included the audience suggestion for the troupe’s enactment of what happens when you spend too much time on Facebook, led by gibberish master Catey Brannan.

ered then serenaded by the troupe, who took some shots at her husband, Aaron.

A funny bit featured Chris Friday, who’s also a compelling singer, and Adam Ratner playing “Testicles” and “Clymidia” in a Shakespearean scene. Tim Beasley came up with some great ideas for a new PR campaign for the IRS. One of my favorite bits is Puppets, in which two audience members physically move cast members’ body parts as needed. Steve Turrisi executed more pratfalls than Charlie Chaplin on speed.

An entire weekend of air-conditioned hilarity begins Friday, July 12. FST’s Improv Festival will bring two nights of comedy to downtown Sarasota with some of the hottest groups on the Improv scene nationwide, including FST Improv, Assorted Rogues, Dad’s Garage, Jester Theater, Available Cupholders, Smith & I, Mad Cowford, ImprovBoston, SAK Comedy Lab, All Play, Sick Puppies Comedy, Stacked, Hawk & Wayne, Lazy Fairy Improv, The Third Thought, and special event: The Improvised Shakespeare Company.

Also offered are improv workshops taught by the professional Improvisers attending the festival. I experienced fabulous laugh-filled fun at this event last year.

Woman’s Exchange supports the arts with grants and scholarships The Woman’s Exchange board of directors awarded $257,000 in grants and scholarships Thursday, June 6, to 19 of Sarasota and Manatee counties’ local arts and cultural organizations and to 32 students.

“The arts are what make Sarasota such a special place and they need the help right now,” said Woman’s Exchange CEO and Executive Director Karen Koblenz.
