+ Chihuahua loved island life, retirement Peter “Petey” KeyworthFahey, of Longboat Key, died May 28. Born in 1998, the Chihuahua moved in 2003 to the Longbeach Village from Siesta Key. He loved being on the boat with the wind in his ears and running on the sandbar with his nephew (a dog named Charlie), pausing only to roll in dead fish and other smelly things. Petey was a world traveler who retired full-time in 2011 to Longboat Key from Guam. In retirement, he enjoyed napping, boat rides and avoiding the cats that his mother adopted in Guam. He is remembered for his sweet, calm nature, love of a good nap and ability to stare unrelentingly at his humans (known as his “creepy Chihuahua stare”). Petey is survived by his owners, David Keyworth and Holly Fahey; nephew, Charlie; and sisters, cats Suette and Ropa.

Candidates can return unused funds to donors or give them as charitable donations. Brown and commission candidate Irwin Pastor also donated unused funds from this year’s election to the library.

Longbeach Village residents got their wish. Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant & Pub owner Ed Chiles announced during the Longboat Key Town Commission’s regular meeting Monday, June 3, he will not pursue a plan to use the historic Rufus P. Jordan House for receptions and meeting space. And, because he heard residents’ complaints about noise and parking, he
plans to discontinue major events for the restaurant, including fireworks for the Fourth of July and the fish fry fundraiser for the Longboat Key Historical Society. “We had a lot of folks complaining about noise and parking from big events,” Chiles told the Longboat Observer. “We only had two big events. Cell tower debate echoes through Town Hall Residents and town commissioners got hung up on language in Comprehensive Plan changes and turned a discussion into a two-hour cell tower debate Monday night. “I think we are getting off track and starting to talk about cell towers again.” Mayor Jim Brown made that statement over and over again at Monday night’s commission meeting during discussion of a telecommunications agenda
item about Comprehensive Plan amendments being transmitted to the state for review. The attempts, though, were futile. Both commissioners and Key residents turned the agenda item into a two-hour debate about cell towers on Longboat Key.
Planning, Zoning and Building Director Robin Meyer explained that two amendments to the Comp Plan would do the following: • Add language that talks about towers being the least-preferred form of wireless service facilities
on the Key. • Add language back into the Comp Plan that states personal wireless service facilities (all forms of cellular-communication equipment) are not subject to
