“We hear and see the show every night, so we get to really analyze it — we come up with whatever holes are in the plot,” Teri Booth says about playing the same production every night.”

Teri Booth pulls a canvas bag out from between a handful of instrument cases in the trunk of her car. Peering inside, it’s apparent this is her bag of tricks — there’s a clown nose, a couple of puppets, novelty disguise glasses, a metallic tinsel wig and a mini red plastic cowboy hat, to name a few. She puts all of them on at once and attempts a sternlooking face, but her fun-loving nature is apparent.

Booth explains that if she’s playing woodwinds for a musical-theater production in the pit where the audience can’t see her, she’ll often don a costume or prop during curtain call. Or, sometimes she’ll convince the musicians to have a theme night — such as “Under the Sea” — for which they wear floaties and goggles.

“I just have this inherently playful nature that has to come out somehow,” she says. “I work really hard at what I do, but it’s fun. I like to have fun and make things fun for other people.”

music. Instead of potentially making six figures, she’s instead wielding six instruments: flute, piccolo, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax and oboe. She learned flute in elementary school; oboe in high school because the band needed an oboist; and started dabbling in the others after high school. Even though she has to work part-time doing inventory for RGIS, for Booth, it’s worth it to do what she loves full-time.

Her current gig is “Noah Racey’s Pulse: The Beat of Song and Dance” at Asolo Repertory Theatre. It’s an interactive production during which the musicians are on-stage and part of the performance. Although she can’t wear a clown nose, she’s excited to be a part of the musical because of the level of passion, talent and commitment among the cast and musicians.

As she speaks about “Pulse” and the other 10 productions she has played in this season, it’s hard to imagine she’d be happy in any other career.

She’s at ease sitting on a bench along the bayfront as she explains how it all started. Booth is a Sarasota native who attributes

In high school, Booth attended The Players’ production of “Guys and Dolls,” after which she declared: “That’s what I’m going to do. I’ll play in the pit.”

The following year, in 1982, she played her first show. It was “Paint Your Wagon,” at Sarasota Players.

in about one a year while she was working as a non-musician.

Thirty-one years after her first show, she’s still playing in the pits at The Players, in addition to the Manatee Players, Venice Theatre and Asolo Repertory Theatre.

The musicians join the production when casts begin their technical rehearsals. Each theater has its own feel, and each cast its own personality.

“On Friday nights when a lot of people are getting ready to go to dinner or go out, I’m getting ready to go to work, and I

couldn’t be any happier,” Booth says. “I love that. I love what I do, and I love the people involved.”

In addition to new casts, there’s always a new score or a new style of playing. And, because there are about five woodwind parts but only one woodwind player, Booth transcribes the important sections for each instrument into one score.

But those aren’t the only things that keep her on her toes: At the Manatee Players Riverfront theater, a suitcase flew into the pit — Booth think’s it’s why there’s a grate covering a pit at the new theater. In a production of “Oklahoma,” a prop knife came flying toward her. During a preview performance of “Anything Goes” at Manatee Players, two cast members accidently danced right into the pit, and they had to stop the production.

Booth tries to describe her worst day, but struggles. She is living out her dream.

“Sometimes I wonder, ‘Why is it OK for me to live the way I want to?’” she says. “I see so many people who don’t. They do things because they have to do them.”

I can’t be removed from it or life starts draining from me.

That’s the hard thing about matinees, I have to go inside these dark walls (when it’s nice out).

2. Talent — Being around talented people inspires me.

It inspires me to work and develop talent.

3. L aughter — It makes everything better.

4. Food — I like sharing meals with people because it builds a sense of community.

There’s something about sitting down and breaking bread with people that’s more intimate.

5. Spirituality — Even though I believe people have a choice, I also believe there’s a plan. I believe that if you’re in sync with the plan, then things work.

Walking into Art Center Sarasota Thursday, May 30, it was hard to miss the jungle of people and colorful decorated leaves in Gallery 2. Hundreds of leaves dangled from the ceiling via fishing line, and the nearby walls were printed with the names of the community members who decorated them.

This exhibit is the fruition of a community project and installation by Jackie Peters Cully that has been in the works for the past season. The installation will move in September to Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg where that community will add its own leaves.

In “African Nouveau,” featured in Gallery 1, are intricate, hand-sculpted carvings of tribal African people — Ohio-based artist Woodrow Nash made every etch and bead on the intricately detailed sculptures.

In Gallery 3 is the first Black Box Project installation, an initiative to exhibit the work of current students and graduates of area colleges. The exhibit currently features an installation by Ringling College of Art and Design senior Zachary See. See’s work features a wooden structure with rosemary plants, a life jacket and map in one part of the room. Ink and marker drawings on the surrounding walls mimic the rosemary plant stems, representing man’s relationship with nature.

Gallery 4 features a hodge-podge of work by Art Center Sarasota members: photography, oil, acrylic, collages, sculptures and mixed-media. Many of the artists represented on the walls were present at the exhibit.

All four exhibits will be on display through July 12 and can be seen during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Art Center Sarasota, 707 N. Tamiami Trail.

hen someone visits our area, it’s likely they’ll order Key lime pie as the perfect ending to his or her meal (usually consisting of fresh fish). Key limes are Florida’s star fruit — they originated in the nearby Florida Keys.

The Key lime is smaller and more pungent than what most think of as a lime, the Persian lime.

Usually associated with the chilled citrus dessert that’s creamy, light, tart and sweet, Key lime pie has become synonymous with Florida. Even though Key lime season runs from June through August, it’s a year-round staple that locals and tourists expect to find on the menu.

And some places have produced unique twists on the summer citrus. Here’s a look at some local finds.

When owner of Heavenly Cupcakes, Becky Schultes, opted to create a Key lime pie-flavored cake as the weekly special, it flew off the shelves. Her green dough, and even the icing, is lime fla-

vored, and the combo has the best kind of lip-puckering effect. The cake pop is the simplest form; the truffle is served on a graham-cracker base; and the cupcake has lime-flavored cream cheese frosting.

“We live in Florida!” Schultes says, “You gotta have Key lime, right?” If they aren’t already instore, these Key lime cakes can be specially ordered.

This fluffy breakfast-menu item at Currents restaurant puts a Floridian twist on a traditional favorite. The large single waffle

offers a subtle lime flavor in airy, crisp and savory dough featuring Key lime zest and vanilla mascarpone. Accoutrements of juicy, roasted pineapple compote and toasted coconut sit atop a mound of melting butter right in the center. One bite gives the perfect semblance of dessert for breakfast — talk about waking up on the right side of the bed.

Chef Leo Gianulis created these Key lime waffles because of the demand.

“Just like if you go to Kansas City, you want to get barbecue,” he says.

A few years ago, the management of Tommy Bahama attempted to take the Key lime

martini off the menu, but so many people kept ordering it, they realized just how much of a fixture it had become. The local lime used in the martini comes from Sarasota’s Central Market Quality Wholesale Produce and Dairy. The martini is creamy but light and extremely tangy. The graham cracker-crust rim gives the idea one is indulging in an actual pie.

General Manager Thai Branton suggests substituting dessert for one of these cocktails, but for those who can’t go without the pie — Tommy Bahama offers the real thing, too.

The store receives many requests daily for its Key lime pie, not because it’s unusual, but because it is familiar — just the way mom made it — crumbly and buttery graham cracker crust, tangy lime filling, and the perfect amount of whipped cream.

Executive Pastry Chef Jami Holton says the key to having a great Key lime pie is the perfect amount of Key lime juice. It’s a skill she’s perfected by making Morton’s Key lime pies in-house daily.

This being a novel aimed at women, the twists and turns of the plot are much less important than that of the developing relation between Eli and Abra, and it is here that Nora hits her stride and shows us how she’s made her millions. It’s not that men are weak, but they must be led. They must be taught to appreciate good food and flowers, to express their feelings, to adopt rescue dogs, to meditate and, perhaps most crucial of all, to “hydrate” after they run. So, it will come as no surprise that the real climax of “Whiskey Beach” is not the resolution of the complicated mystery but rather the moment when Abra finally gets Eli to admit, out loud, that he loves her.

Social issues, satire and beautiful writing interest Roberts not a whit. Her turf is the female mind. And, though at times I found Abra a bit much — in addition to her yoga studio, she makes jewelry, reads tarot cards, does a little party planning and is getting into Zumba — she grows on you. Spending time with her is like dipping into the pool at your vacation condo. It’s calm and relaxing, the perfect thing to do on a hot afternoon.

Just remember to hydrate afterward.

et’s talk about beach books. Sarasota is, after all, the perfect town in which to read one. Most visitors bring along a bestseller or two, and getting lost in a story that’s fun and entertaining is an important part of the vacation experience. You have a special dispensation to read the guilty pleasures of the literary world: the thrillers, the celebrity biographies, even those novels for women readers that seem to clog the bookshelves in the airport gift shops.

In fact, let’s start with “women’s fiction.”

Unless you’re an aficionado you probably don’t know much about it, other than the fact that it’s an enormous business, and that certain names, such as Nora Roberts, seem vaguely familiar. Roberts has written hundreds of books and is credited with revitalizing the genre with heroines who are smart, sassy and not ashamed to admit they like sex. Her latest book, “Whiskey Beach,” is a perfect example.

The plot is as old as time. A lawyer named Eli Landon retreats to his childhood home, an old mansion called Bluff House in a seaside town just north of Boston, to lick his wounds after being accused of the still-unsolved murder of his wife. There he meets our heroine, Abra Walsh, a yoga instructor who drops by to clean and cook for him.

There is an immediate attraction, helped along by a thickening plot that reminded me of a Nancy Drew mystery. Who is digging that hole in the mansion’s basement? Does it have something to do with Esmeralda’s dowry, a long-lost pirate treasure? Why is that private eye snooping around? Who pushed Eli’s grandmother down the stairs?

Honeymoon: On Tuesday, May 7, the newlyweds boarded the Patriot Express for Germany where Harris is a first lieutenant assigned to the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade. There-

fore, honeymoon postponed.

Fun facts: On April 18, Harris graduated from Army flight school at Fort Rucker, Ala., earning his wings as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot. His groom’s cake was a helicopter.

Prior to the wedding day, the dinner the night before took place at Crab & Fin, the ideal setting for a continued “open mike” after-party at which the bride and groom and many of the wedding guests performed together.

How they met: Harris is a 2011 Distinguished Military Graduate of the University of Virginia where he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the US Army. Chelsea, originally from Fairfax, Va., is also a graduate of the University of Virginia. The couple’s interest in music brought them together.

During Harris’ senior year, he decided he would like to play music (he plays guitar and sings) and searched on a social-networking site connecting local musicians.
