+ Lil’ philanthropists Twin brothers Zachary and Evan Rubin, 8, sold art creations they made May 15, at Urfer Park. The brothers were raising money for the Kids to Kids Backpack Program. The twins’ parents agreed to match the funds raised to help the boys give back to less-fortunate children. The twins raised $1,714 with the matching funds from their parents. The proceeds will sponsor 18 backpacks for the school year.

+ So who’s counting? Sarasota resident Renée Sheade celebrated her birthday May 16, a few days early, at Michael’s On East. Long-time friend Jeannette D’Angelo organized the birthday luncheon. This year’s gang included Sheade’s friends Terri Blumberg, Betty Schiff, Charlene Carstens, Joan Mendell, Joy Server, Dottie Garner, Helen Sherman and Sandy Greenberg. D’Angelo has been planning birthday bashes for her friends for 27 years. It is estimated Sheade has been the greatest recipient, with about 26 birthday cakes. This year is D’Angelo’s swan song in that role, however, because she will be moving to Charlotte, N.C., in the near future.

financial outlook

It started at the first World Series game at Yankee Stadium in October 2011, one month after the 9/11 tragedy. Up on the jumbotron, fans watched images of American heroism. One of them was the iconic raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. Longboat Key resident Harold Ronson, 86, poked the man standing next to him at the stadium and said, “I saw that flag go up.” A young man overheard Ronson and asked him where the flagraising took place. Ronson said he polled about 10 other people

that night, stunned to learn how few of them knew of Iwo Jima. “I’ve got to do something,” Ronson told himself. So he is. At Monday’s Memorial Day ceremonies at J.D. Hamel Park, in Sarasota, Mayor Shannon Snyder singled out Ronson and Thomas Savage, founder of the Sarasota Public Art Fund, to announce their efforts to bring another iconic World War II monument to Sarasota’s bayfront.

Projected budget deficit: $6 million Rising pension costs make up a large part of the city deficit. The city manager and finance director seek ways to trim costs.

Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin and Finance Director John Lege will spend the next few weeks with department heads for daily budget meetings. The mission: To begin paring down a projected $6 million budget deficit by trimming department budgets. Barwin and Lege seek to oper-

ate city services more efficiently, collaborate more with the county and trim costs. Barwin and Lege had originally estimated a property value increase for the city of 1.5%. That number would have resulted in an anticipated general fund revenue hike from $54 million in 2012-2013 to $55 million for the

upcoming fiscal year. But, when the property appraiser released preliminary assessed value for citywide properties May 29, the values increased 3.5%. If commissioners decide to keep the same millage rate used in 20122013, the city would see an additional $622,000 in property tax revenue, Lege said.

“It’s not going to save anything,” said Commissioner Paul Caragiulo. “It is a good indication that properties are coming back, and we are about to come out of this malaise. But it’s not party time.” The largest contributor to the project deficit is an anticipated $3.9 million increase in the city’s pension costs.
