+ Key gets thumbs up from travel writer Brett Gastman, 10, vacations on Longboat Key with his family. His grandparents, Ted and Sara Gastman, have owned a Beachplace unit for more than 20 years. Recently, Brett wrote a school paper about the Key, and we’d say he aced it. He recommends the cookie dough ice cream at Kilwins on St. Armands Circle, the beaches and renting a condo. He concludes: “Now you know about the best vacation spot ever (aka, Longboat Key, Florida). It doesn’t matter what age. If you can’t drive or you can’t take a plane, just smuggle out some cash and take a cab or train. I’ve enjoyed going there every time, and I think you would, too.” Brett apparently has ink in his blood. His cousin, Jason Rosenbaum, 28, is a political writer for the St. Louis Beacon, and he had a story published in the Longboat Observer when he was 10. We’ll keep an eye out for his byline in the future.
+ College honors Nellie Wilson Mary Baldwin College honored Longboat Key resident Nellie Wilson with the Admissions Volunteer Excellence Award. The award recognizes an alumna or alumnus who has provided top-notch service in the Staunton, Va., college’s admissions office and leadership in other collegerelated activities.

Brandon and Norm, played by FSU/Asolo actors Brendan Ragan and Jacob Cooper, fight over a document in a scene for “The Lucky 6” shot Friday, May 24. Six employees of a Sarasota tech startup hit the jackpot and won $120 million. The media dubbed them “the Lucky 6.” They went their separate ways but returned to Sarasota five years later amid allegations from state and federal officials of improprieties surrounding the win. On a recent Friday afternoon, lottery winners Norm, Ernie and John, along with Brandon, the selfish younger brother of lottery winner Darla, chased each other down the beach in a fight for a document that could hold the truth about the lottery. The possibilities of fines, restitution and even jail time loomed as they sprinted and tumbled across the white sand beach away from the abandoned resort toward the glistening Gulf of Mexico waters. So, does the document prove the lottery’s corruption? “You’ll have to see the movie,” first assistant director Nellie Smydra said. The shuttered resort that
Longboat Key Hilton Beachfront Resort officials wanted to turn dirt for a new renovation-and-expansion this summer, but the goal is no longer feasible. The town of Longboat Key is still in the process of reviewing and making changes to its codes and Comprehensive Plan that would help pave the way for a project that involves redeveloping existing Hilton buildings and its 102 rooms. Delray Beach-based Ocean Properties Ltd., owner of the Hilton, is also interested in at least 85 of the 250 tourism units that would be used for a new tower on the property. Ocean Properties Vice President Andy Berger told the Longboat Observer in January that to keep the Hilton flag flying on the property, renovations had to begin this summer and that both the commission and the Planning and Zoning Board had to approve the project before taking a summer hiatus. But Sarasota attorney John Patterson, who is representing the Hilton and

The scene is part of the plot of “The Lucky 6,” a comedydrama film that’s the inaugural project for the Summer Feature Film Program, a new collaboration between the Ringling College of Art and Design and FSU/Asolo Conservatory, in which Ringling students produce and Asolo students act. Norm, Ernie, John and Brandon are FSU/Asolo Conservatory actors Jacob Coo-
per, Francisco Rodriguez, Joe McGranaghan and Brendan Ragan. The goal of the project is to provide students from both institutions with actual feature film-production experience. It’s also meant to put the spotlight on film-production possibilities and talent in the Sarasota community. The cast has shot scenes throughout the community in locations such as Ringling College, Sarasota-Bradenton
