“I signed with an agent in Tampa, one in North Carolina and another in New York, all because I did a 22-minute student film on the side,” Tony Stopperan says.

ony Stopperan walks toward the coffee maker in the president’s office conference room at Ringling College of Art and Design. He’s put-together: His shirt is ironed, his tie is straight and he looks showered — but his brightblue eyes are surrounded by dark circles, heralding the fact that he hasn’t slept for weeks. He fills his pale pink coffee mug with the fuel of his existence and says, “I have an 11-day old baby at home.”

Well, that explains it.

But it’s not the only baby the 33-year-old is looking after — in addition to his day job as specialprojects assistant to Ringling President Dr. Larry Thompson, Stopperan is the program director and executive producer of “The Lucky 6.” It’s the inaugural collaboration between Ringling and FSU/Asolo Conservatory; Asolo students act in a feature-length film Ringling students produce — the collaboration is Stopperan’s brainchild.

// Arts&Entertainment Five things that inspire Tony Stopperan:

“The Lucky 6” features eight FSU/Asolo Conservatory students — seven third-years and one first-year.

The idea behind the script came from Brad and June Battersby’s 21-year-old daughter, Leila, who is a student in the Digital Filmmaking Department at Ringling College of Art and Design. Brad Battersby, the director and head of digital filmmaking, then presented it to the actors and asked for input. From there, a local writer put the script together.

Actors in the film are Joe McGranaghan, Jesse Dornan, Jacob Cooper, Andrea Adnoff (first-year student), Brendan Ragan, Lindsay Tornquist, Ernie Hirshberg and Erin Whitney.

1. My wife — My wife, Jaime, inspires me daily. She sacrifices and works tirelessly at her job, our marriage and family, all the while, never taking a bow nor expecting an ovation.

She’s also a knockout — ask around. She’s gorgeous.

2. Artists — For taking the gifts God gave them to create works of meaning for themselves or for others. It inspires me to watch the dedication and focus of an artist to bring something from non-existence into existence.

3. Entrepreneurs — I’ve always been inspired by those who see a need, a niche, an angle, as opportunities to earn.

4. Alaska — It has the power to make you feel so small and insignificant, and yet so special just for having been witness to it.

5. Underdogs — Gonzaga, Steve Buscemi, Rocky Balboa, Hobbits — hell, if they can do it …

Stopperan begins to tell the story of how the project started and how the men met. It was when he was still studying in FSU/Asolo Conservatory’s program, from which he graduated in spring 2012.

Stopperan explains that he did something atypical of the other students — he acted in a Ringling College student film on the side.

Ringling students reached out to him about acting in their shortfilm, “The Forever.”

After graduation, talent agents immediately signed him. But it wasn’t because of his on-stage résumé or repertoire — it was because he had condensed the 22-minute “The Forever” into a minute-and-a-half film reel. It was tangible, something he could mail to casting directors.

“There’s no stage versus camera,” Stopperan says. “You have to be everything. You have to have the breadth of skills and have (both) to get the job.”

Stopperan met Brad Battersby, the department head of Ringling’s Digital Filmmaking program, through another attempt at collaboration in August 2010 between the two universities — a workshop Brad Battersby and Andrei Ma-

laev-Babel, an acting teacher at FSU/Asolo Conservatory, led.

“Tony and I discovered that we had a similar dream,” says Brad Battersby in an email. “And that was to make films here with the resources in Sarasota and (of the) respective institutions.”

So, they begin to put their heads together, and Stopperan made “The Lucky 6” his side project, that is, until he began working at Ringling College shortly after his graduation. He thought the film was a great opportunity to pursue art on his own terms and find success on the path he wanted — providing for a family. Initially, he planned to continue working on the film in his free time.

“I told Larry Thompson, ‘Hey, I’m doing this thing on the side,” Stopperan says. “Thompson said, ‘That’s awesome, but now it’s going to be a sponsored college project.’”

So, Stopperan began planning the logistics for the Summer Feature Film Program, raising $75,000 of the $150,000 fundraising campaign; and Battersby began working on the script for “The Lucky 6.”

Stopperan is already thinking about 2014 and has raised $17,000 for next year’s project — there’s not yet a script in the works, but

he hopes it’s completely different than the first film. He hopes once “The Lucky 6” is finished in late summer, that it ends up in film festivals and receives awards so the money raised can profit the following year’s programs.

“It’s going to be a new paradigm for these young artists to know they can have control over their careers,” he says. “That’s the lesson I’ve learned: You don’t have to be this starving actor. And, you can count on Sarasota as a place that will nurture an artist’s entrepreneurial spirit.”

college credit, living in the dorms for free and getting all their meals for free. Plus, this is the only opportunity for them to work on a feature-length film before graduation — they previously only had the opportunity for short films.

They use the same equipment director Peter Jackson used to film “The Hobbit.” (“It’s the best equipment out there,” Stopperan says).

He peeks out the back door where a trailer of equipment has just been unloaded.

“Did the trailer leave?” he asks.

“Yeah, but it will be back with another load this afternoon,” a busy student responds. Everything is going smoothly.

Another faculty member working on the film (there’s at least one from every department), June Petrie Battersby, finally wrangles him to talk production details. He sits down. After she gets through a long-winded list of points, she pauses.

“Well, I don’t think I’ve seen you sit down for months!” she says of Stopperan’s usual hustle.

On his way out of the building, Stopperan runs into Brad Battersby, June’s husband, the director, and Stopperan’s cohort in the idea, planning and execution of

Stopperan takes one last sip of his coffee before crossing campus where the pre-production is bustling. There are 54 participants in this nonprofit program, Summer Feature Film Program, that teaches students via the hands-on application of making a featurelength film.

This summer’s film, “The Lucky 6,” is a comedy drama about a group of six employees of a tech startup in Sarasota who win $300 million. Five years following the big win, legal accusations force them to discover what is really important in life.

The production team is meeting in the computer lab, where students’ noses are buried in the script and they are discussing notes. While passing through the building, Stopperan jumps over a pile of costumes littering the floor and says hello to the costume designer, Ringling junior Hanna Persson.

“Sorry for the mess!” she yells as he passes through the hallway down to the studio.

Before a faculty member stops him to ask a question about the budget, he shares an interesting bit of information: The students involved in the film are receiving

The world premiere of “Noah Racey’s Pulse” is taking place May 23, at Asolo Repertory Theatre — it’s a production Asolo Rep has been trying to get on the books for two years. If the dance musical production gets picked up nationally, that could also mean the set, which was built at the Koski Center’s Joan Armour Mendell Scenic Shop, will also travel nationally.

Set and costume designer Tobin Ost, who’s based in New York, but has traveled here frequently to work on the production, talked about building the set. It’s a dance musical heavily influenced by tap dance, so the floor is a very important element.

“We cease to think of it as a standard floor, and are thinking of it now as an instrument that needs to be tuned,” Ost says.

The dancers traveled to Sarasota Jan. 26, to test five different 5-foot by 5-foot squares of wood. They settled on a white pine variety, but then also tested the finishes (from wax to polyurethane), what to layer the pine on top of, different grains of sandpaper, etc. Because it not only has to look good, it has to sound great, and it also has to be functional for the dancers who want it slippery when they have to slide, but grabable when they aren’t sliding.

“Where we land will be interesting,” Ost says.

So far, they’ve settled on the layer of pine, with a plywood substrate that’s lifted over a hollow cavity to give the floor the proper sound and proper bounce for the dancers. And as of May 13, it’s still being tested, sanded and improved — they’ve spent more than half-a-year of perfecting the floor.

Joan Armour Mendell donated Asolo Repertory Theatre’s scenic shop inside of the Koski Center, which gave the theater greater capability and space for building scenery; and it created more revenue for the organization because other national theaters and local arts organizations outsource their set building to Asolo Rep. Mendell thinks arts are important because they enrich people. As a little girl she was taught to give her money and share. “No matter what you have, you have to give a little bit of what you have,” she says. “One of my main purposes in life is to help people by filling their heads with good sense and helping them,” Sharon Rudele says. “I do it out of love, but some people don’t understand my tactics.”

You know the phrase, “Every family’s got one?” Well, in the Stevens family, it’s Aunt Rudele. She’s loud, bossy and opinionated — but she means well.

Everyone who knows — or knows of — Sharon Rudele refers to her as Aunt Rudele.

Many people in Sarasota have come to love the woman whom she says “God made so pretty and smart”— and, humble, apparently.

Aunt Rudele first graced a Sarasota stage 10 years ago, but has been so busy with her fried-chicken business she hasn’t even had time to think about visiting. But how could she turn down Nate Jacobs, founder and artistic director of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, who invited her to WBTT to perform a one-woman show May 16 through May 19?

We sat down with Aunt Rudele to catch up on the last 10 years.

How did you get into the fried-chicken business?

I became an assistant dietitian (then assistant supervisor) in the food department at the local memorial hospital for years … until one day, I’m at home sleeping in my bed and I had this dream.

All I could see was a fried chicken leg flying through this blue sky …

I rolled over and went back to sleep, and all of the sudden it appeared again in my dream; this time, it had a banner attached that said, “Aunt Rudele’s Fried Chicken.”

I didn’t need no house to fall on my head — God was speaking to me.

What’s the Stevens family like?

We got your preachers, your singers (she points to herself), your lawyers, your liars and your wayward — those are the ones that get wayward and you gotta reel ’em in.

These children come into the world with their heads empty, and it’s your job to fill it up with sense. I love ’em all, I surely do …

We are a bunch of people who love each other, who sometimes don’t understand each other. All of them always try to act like they don’t understand me.

They always say I try to come and take over, but I don’t. I just feel, well, if I see things that need to be done or said, I say them and I do them.

Who’s your favorite family member?

Robert is 25 years old, and he’s very smart. He’s a businessman in New York,

and he comes all the way from New York to the reunion. Last time he came he brought this girl, and I asked her, “Baby, where’s the other half of your dress? That’s a T-shirt you have on.” I told her, “I never had the opportunity to meet a real hoochie mamma.”

I really had to talk to him about her. I had to help her, too, because she didn’t know.

What advice would you give to the young people of Sarasota?

The first thing I would tell them is, “You don’t know everything.” Because that’s one of the sordid mistakes young people make; they think they know much more then they really do. Then I’d tell them, “Stay in school, will ya?” It’s not just about doing what they like. And, “Learn about your family; learn where you come from.” That’ll give them self worth and make ’em feel apart of something — no matter what they are, they’re yours.

How did you meet Nate Jacobs and what do you think of him?

Oh, that man! I love him because he inspires children. He helps, councils and mentors young people and that’s kind of what I do.

He’s giving me a show at his theater.

And I’m going to sing; many people have never heard me sing. I want all the people to come out and see Aunt Rudele show her stuff — because I have some stuff to show.

It’s going to be a good time, an evening of laughter, fun and wonderful singing.

rant’s Gardens recently finished installing a brand-new landscape for a home on Island Circle, on Siesta Key. Grant’s Gardens worked with the owners of the home for three months and then installed the new landscape in one week.

The owners wanted a lot of color, so Grant’s Gardens made sure to install a wide variety of Florida friendly, native plants as well as a few exotics that would add pops of color throughout the property.

The owners made some changes to their patio, including redoing the pool and adding a custom-made fire pit.

There are mango, lime, loquat, lemon, raspberry and blueberry trees and bushes on the property in large, decorative pots from Vietnam.

Menu items are priced from $3 to $36, with more than two dozen choices under $15. Early diners enjoy a three-course, prixfixe menu with lots of options (all smaller portions of regular menu items). Including a glass of wine, beer or cosmopolitan, it is $15 per person. The prix-fixe menu is available from 4 to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Signature dishes here include a Kobe beef meatloaf, on the menu at lunch as “new style grilled” and at dinner as sliders, but always available to those in the know.

Serving Spoon is the neighborhood’s long-time favorite breakfast-and-lunch place. Craig and Natasha Menke bought it from the original owners in 1998, sold it in 2007 and repossessed it in 2011.

They closed it in July of that year for renovation and renewal and reopened, much to the relief of loyal customers, five weeks later. Things have been going along swimmingly since then with signature menu items, including waffles, huevos rancheros and Popeye’s omelet.

The Serving Spoon is a go-to place for healthy options and glutenfree dishes — and, surprisingly, one of Sarasota’s best brownies. Its website will be online again soon; in the meantime, use Google.

Morton’s specialty is ready-toeat food, which it offers in various forms: hot as “grab-and-go” meals; pre-packaged in microwaveable containers; and by the pound from sparkling cases that friendly, knowledgeable staff tend. The food variety is impressive and constantly changing; one case alone contains barbecue ribs, grouper, seared tuna, mahimahi, Brussels sprouts, blackbean burgers, asparagus, grilled vegetables, pine nut chicken and Moroccan meatballs — and it’s only a tiny portion of what’s available on any given day. Displays of fresh meat and fish, baked goods and produce are equally impressive. If only it would tackle the bagels-and-lox problem.

The YMCA Foundation of Sarasota held the 22nd annual Going for the Gold fundraiser Saturday, May 4, at the Frank Berlin Sr. Branch.

Chaired by Dawn Epstein and Pat Martin, this year’s theme was “Night of the Jade Butterfly.”

The YMCA was decorated with a wide Asian flair, including paper lanterns, kimonos and tapestries.

More than 400 guests enjoyed a wide variety of entertainment throughout the night, including cocktail music and theme dance by Kuniko Yamamoto, dinner music by Jonathan Cortez and an opera performance by Adelaide Boede-

cker, accompanied by Ann Stephenson Moe on piano. Members of Cirque Vertigo dressed up as butterflies, with amazing cirque performances that delighted the crowd — its second year at the event.

Sarasota YMCA’s new president and CEO, Kurt Stringfellow, and new YMCA Foundation of Sarasota President Jennifer Grondahl, were introduced to the crowd during the program.

Following dinner, Michael Klauber led the live auction and the silent auction also gained traction, in which one generous bidder paid $5,000, so 200 of the YMCA’s foster children can attend an Orioles game. The net proceeds from the evening totaled $403,000.
