+ Rothenbergs move to Freedom Village Former Mayor Lee Rothenberg and his wife, Frances, sold their Longboat Key home in March and moved to Freedom Village in Bradenton, according to property records. But, although the couple is no longer on the Key, they’re in good company. The couple will have many famed former Longboaters as their neighbors, including former Town Clerk and Village resident Pat Arends and longtime Longboat Key Turtle Watcher Orville Clayton.

Commission nixes St. Denis’ health-insurance request

St. Denis

Commissioner Lynn Larson was livid with an agenda item added to Monday night’s meeting that would have allowed former Town Manager Bruce St. Denis access to town health insurance for life.

“Ridiculous, utterly embarrassing and ludicrous.” Those were just a few of the words Commissioner Lynn Larson used at Monday night’s regular meeting to describe how she felt about former Town Manager Bruce St. Denis’ request to alter

his settlement agreement to obtain access to the town’s insurance plan for life. Toward the end of the meeting, Mayor Jim Brown asked for and received commissioner consensus by a 4-3 vote to add an agenda item to discuss St. De-

nis’s settlement agreement. Next month, St. Denis’ Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) insurance, which allowed him to stay on and pay for insurance through the town’s insurance plan for 18 months, expires.

“Mr. St. Denis has availed himself access to the town’s insurance and pays for that himself,” said Town Manager Dave Bullock. “He has made a request we look and see if he remains eli-

HULA HARE + A novel worth waiting for Anna Maria resident Myra Holmes recently published her novel, “A Love Worth Waiting For,” which tells the story of Sister Mary Ann, who struggles to determine whether her passion for God’s work is stronger than the love she feels for Ward Pendleton, a photojournalist and winter Longboat Key resident. The novel is fictional but was inspired by the true-life murder of two nuns and attack of a third nun and bishop in 1990 in Nicaragua. The book refers to many Longboat Key locations, including Euphemia Haye’s Haye Loft and Beer Can Island. And St. Jude’s Church sounds a lot like St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church.

TOWN HALL ACTIVISTS

Private push or public interest? Residents Larry Grossman and Gene Jaleski are as active as ever at Town Hall. Their presence is prompting questions about how much staff time should be used to handle their requests. Public Works Director Juan Florensa is getting calls and emails from lighting vendors interested in partnering with the town for a turtle-friendly lighting program for the Key. Florensa and Planning, Zon-

ing and Building Director Robin Meyer are being asked to research the town’s beach accesses and the easement that goes along with a specific access. Town Clerk Trish Granger has to edit the town’s emails to make

sure what she deems “campaign or personal interest” emails aren’t making their way through the town email system. Financial specialist Rita Mazza has had to provide detailed bid information for past consultants

the town was reviewing to help revamp its codes and Comprehensive Plan. Budget specialist and interim
