One of Sarasota’s most legendary homes continues to dazzle. INSIDE

OUR TOWN + Coastal Retreat Design and Dine Contest winners Kevin and Missy Cooper were speechless March 12, after the ArtisTree Landscape Maintenance and Design team unveiled the blueprints for their new backyard. The couple pored over plans that include coconut palms, sand and a hammock forming an island-like oasis. About 20 species of plants, irrigation and LED lighting surround a fire pit and fountain in the design. ArtisTree designers estimate the backyard makeover will take a week to complete. It will be ready in time for the couple’s celebratory soiree, catered by Michael’s On East, in April.

Developer pitches Main Street hotel County officials are slated to meet with a development firm interested in developing the Main Street property currently used as a parking lot. County officials are considering a plan to spur development of a county-owned acre of downtown land at the northeast corner of U.S. 301 and Main Street. One proposal for the .95-acre property at 20 N. Washington Blvd. involves a land swap re-

sulting in a hotel on the upper Main Street property. The land is currently being used as a courthouse parking lot. Rod Connelly, president and founder of Civix Inc., a Sarasotabased real-estate-development company, wants to trade with

the county so he can build a hotel on the U.S. 301 site. The idea of developing the site first arose a year ago, when County Commissioner Joe Barbetta led a discussion about

Temple Beth Sholom student Connor Engelsberg enjoyed time in the garden Monday, March 11, at the Papa Ed and Mimi Organic Sustainability Kibbutz Garden. Kindergarten teacher Shonna Brody started the garden in August 2011, with the help of a grant from Ed and Betty Rosenthal and the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee. Kindergartners water the plants and learn about the life cycle of a seed, and middle-school students experiment with different fertilizers. During harvest time, students cook the food they grow in a solar cooker, and the school donates much of the crop to Everyday Blessings.
