Sarasota considers changes to its 2050 growth plan In 11 years, only one project has been completed under Sarasota’s 2050 Plan. Developers are seeking modifications make development more viable.

+ Ranch Men’s Club gives back The newly formed Lakewood Ranch Men’s Club teamed up with Manatee County’s Habitat for Humanity program to complete its first “Giving Back to the Community” project Jan. 26. Club members visited Habitat’s Ellenton construction site and got busy for a morning of hard work, camaraderie and fun, as they put down sod alongside future Habitat homeowners. EAST COUNTY — When Sarasota County officials approved their 2050 Plan in 2002, they had a specific vision for shaping growth in undeveloped areas of the county, particularly lands east of I-75. Developers shared their enthusiasm for creating urban-style, walkable communities with a variety of housing and employment options. But, more than 10 years later, only one project has been developed — Neal Communities’ Grand Palm development, in Venice.

Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch has held off on starting its Villages at Lakewood Ranch South project, a 5,500-acre community clustered around seven large lakes east of I-75 and south of University Parkway, despite receiving county approval in May 2010. Other developers, including Neal, have followed the same lead. “There have been some obstacles that have prevented anyone from

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Viking Culinary Center may not re-open under the Viking name, but the space will remain a cooking school. Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty, a subsidiary of Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, reached an agreement Jan. 31 with the trustee for the bankruptcy case of Extreme Remodelers of Sarasota, the cooking school’s parent company. LWR Main Street LLC has purchased the furniture, fixtures and equipment in the Viking Culinary Center on Lakewood Ranch Main Street to ensure the space is used as is by future tenants. “We didn’t want someone going in there and changing the aesthetics of the space,” said Julia DeCastro, director of leasing
