+ Hooters coming to Plymouth Harbor? Don’t worry: The famed restaurant chain isn’t coming to Plymouth Harbor. But there might be other shocking news: Someone at Plymouth Harbor might be expecting. Plymouth Harbor resident/ retired veterinarian/photographer extraordinaire Dr. Lou Newman photographed the community’s new resident great-horned owls, Hootie and Hooter. They’re frequently heard but rarely seen because they’ve taken up residence high up in the banyan tree at the northeast corner of the building. They likely have a nest in the tree, but it’s impossible to tell, for now, because of dense foliage.

Sand is officially coming to the north end of the island this summer. Town Manager Dave Bullock signed a beach permit Thursday, Jan. 3 that allows the town to renourish its beach in three areas. The permit also allows the town to place sand on the Key for the

next 10 years. Town staff is modifying the permit to allow sand to be placed Key-wide as needed for the duration of the permit. “This is the last major hurdle to the upcoming beach project,” Bullock wrote in a Friday, Feb. 1, email to the Longboat Key Town Commission.

The beach project, expected to commence this summer, will place sand at the Broadway Beach Access to Gulfside Road, and from The Islander Club condominiums to the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort. Although the permit also allows for sand to be placed at the

+ Dakota gets early taste of business Dakota Rose Fischer is off to an early start in the restaurant business. Born Dec. 28, 2012, she celebrated her 1-month birthday with a patio luncheon at Mar Vista, and followed it up three days later with a sunset dinner at the Sandbar, during which she got a personal welcome from owner Ed Chiles. Her proud parents are Justin Fischer and former Longboater Kyle Riter Fischer. The restaurant business is clearly in the youngest Fischer’s genes: Her mom, along with her mom’s three siblings, have all worked at the Sandbar. Chiles guaranteed Dakota her first job — in approximately 16 years. Until then, we assume that it’s her job just to be cute.

Jeff Mayers believes in being seen beyond the gates in his new role as general manager of the Longboat Key Club and Resort. Here’s one place you won’t see Jeff Mayers for more than a couple of hours each day: his office. The new general manager of the Longboat Key Club and Resort might tour a golf course, do a walk-through of a department, inspect condo units or meet members on a given day. He estimates that he logs just two or three hours in the office most days. He believes in being seen beyond the Key Club’s gates. Since assuming the position in November, Mayers has joined

Last week, he strolled the runway as a model in the Longboat Key Garden Club’s “Taste of the Keys” fashion show. “One of the things I learned early on was that the impor-

tance of being visible at the club and in the community can’t be understated,” Mayers said. But, even if you haven’t seen Mayers, who admits he sometimes gets mistaken for Robert DeNiro, on the golf course or at a meeting, you might have seen his influence — even if you didn’t know it. When he first arrived at the Key Club, he gave each department an assignment: Submit two ideas on how to immediate-
