+ Toy stories Sarasota residents celebrated Neighborhood Toy Store Day Saturday, Nov. 10, at Children’s World. The event, celebrated nationwide by independent toy stores, was a celebration of local toy stores and their relationships with the community. The celebration included free entertainment, including balloon animals, free giveaways, contests, games and other activities. Children’s World donated 20% of the day’s profits to Toys for Tots, and the store will also serve as a collection point for the charity throughout the holiday season and will provide something special for those who contributed.

+ Leaders will celebrate holiday Local government leaders will collaborate Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the St. Martha Parish Hall, for the 12th annual Thanksgiving community celebration theater luncheon. The Sarasota Ministerial Association will congregate local government representatives, religion and other community leaders to dine with Sarasota’s homeless and people in transition and watch a performance of “The Turkey Trot … Who Took the Turkey?” written by local playwright Kathryn Chesley.

+ Forks and Corks sells out The Sarasota Manatee Originals, a trade organization comprised of more than 50 independent restaurants in the two counties, sold out of tickets for its annual Forks and Corks event in four hours — a record time. According to Executive Director Kate Atkin, this year’s event sold more tickets in the first 45 minutes than it did in 36 hours last year.

Gregg Gamso lives in Alta Vista and walks downtown nearly every day for coffee. When he heard about a proposed downtown streetcar, he wondered about the price tag: How much will the project cost, who will pay for it and if a streetcar ever came to Sarasota, how much would the

fare be? But the idea of a streetcar — especially if federal or state funding can be secured — is an interesting one, Gamso said. “The more I think about it, the more it seems like a cool concept,” Gamso said. “It might just work.”

Palm Avenue restaurant takes form A concrete half-open space under the city-owned Palm Avenue parking garage is being converted into a restaurant named Louies Modern and The Francis, a catering/banquet facility. An entrepreneurial family of local restaurateurs, the Seidenstickers, are spending several million dollars to transform the space, which includes spending $1.6 million to buy the 11,000 square feet space from the city, in a 50-50 partnership with local entrepreneur Jesse Biter. The restaurant and banquet space will open sometime in February, said Steve Seidensticker. “All the walls will be up next week,” Seidensticker said. “We are really moving along.” That is several months later than originally anticipated, yet the Seidenstickers hope the completed restaurant-and-banquet space will spur growth and energy for the stretch of Palm Avenue north of Main Street, where there are few businesses and less pedestrian traffic. The restaurant comes ahead of a proposed city-private hotel project slated for vacant land just north of the parking garage. “We are trying to see into the future, with Palm Avenue growing,” Seidensticker said. Since 2008, the Seidenstickers, Steve and his sons, Joe and Patrick, along with partner Jeff Greco, have run Libby’s Café + Bar, a popular restaurant and bar in the Hillview neighborhood. design features of the restaurant, including waterfalls and a small café area where people can grab a coffee or lunch and eat outside on a patio area. The new restaurant and banquet hall will staff up to 150 employees.

Although the Seidenstickers are dreaming big about the possibilities on Palm, one element they emphasize is that Louie’s Modern and The Francis won’t be another Libby’s. Louies Mod-
