Welcome TO THE THIRD ANNUAL CRYSTAL CLASSIC Siesta Beach, recently named the No. 1 beach in the U.S., is once again the host location of the Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition.

The 2012 Crystal Classic boasts the participation of the “best of the best” in international sand sculpting. That’s quite an honor for this relatively new artistic event. Twenty-four sculptors will compete. In addition, hundreds of volunteers have worked thousands of hours during the past year to assure success.

We can all be proud of our beach and the people responsible for bringing this event to Siesta Beach. Not only is it a wonderful way to enjoy our beautiful beach, the Crystal Classic supports Mote Marine Laboratory’s efforts to save sea turtles through conservation and research programs.

Quick Sand Speed Sculpting Contest

12:30 and 4 PM  Sunday 12:30 PM Local master sculptor and Crystal Classic founder Brian Wigelsworth presents this exciting contest showcasing the sculptors’ skills and their ability to think and sculpt quickly.

Quick Sand pits two master sculptors against each other in a 10-minute, speed-sculpting contest. Just before the timer begins, the sculptors are given a word that they must sculpt in their pile of sand. The pile is formed with a 5-gallon bucket and is mounted on a lazy Susan, which enables the sculptors to sculpt "in-the-round," making it possible for the audience to see the progress. Using applause, the audience chooses the sculptor whose sculpture best represents the word given. Winners advance to the next round.

The competition culminates at the finals at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Join master sand sculptor Walter McDonald, aka "Amazin' Walter," as he demonstrates tricks of the trade.

McDonald was born in 1941 in Orange, Texas, and resides in South Padre Island, Texas. At age 11 or 12, sitting on a creek bank at Boy Scout camp, a kid next to him said, "Watch this!" and dribbled a little tree made of wet sand. McDonald was hooked and says, "I am now the oldest sand sculptor in captivity ... maybe."

He is founder and Grand Poobah of the Sons of the Beach, "a not profitable disorganization dedicated to having fun, helping others have fun and unlittering.”

During his 30-plus years at South Padre Island, he has taught thousands how to build a better sandcastle, organized sand events and competitions and claimed an entry in the Guinness World Records.

Where are your three favorite places to sculpt?

I've loved sculpting in any medium since I was about 4. In 1994, while working in a pottery studio, I was introduced to sand sculpture and was immediately addicted! I spent the next four years learning everything I could about it and entered my first contest in 1997.

Where are your three favorite places to sculpt?

I started competing as a hobby back in college but didn't get serious about it until I graduated and had more time to run off and play in the sand. After I placed at a couple events, it seemed that I had found my way into the contest circuit, and it became a huge part of my life. I love competing because I get to come up with creative ideas and sculptures to share with people.

What awards have you won?

I've only been in a few competitions. I'm competing in this event to hang with my friends and create art.

Silver medal at the World Ice Art Championships (2009), bronze medal at the World Ice Art Championships (2009) and third place Sand Castle Days (2009) What do you do for fun when you aren't creating masterpieces in the sand?

I write songs and perform with my band, Crash My Party, here in New York.

New York City, Siesta Key and Wildwood Crest, N.J. Why/when did you begin competing in sand sculpting events?

I competed in my first major contest in Texas in 2003. It was what so-called “professional” sand sculptors did. So, I did! What makes them appealing is that the sculpture themes or content is not dictated. We get to carve whatever our imagination can conjure as opposed to carving something specific by request. The mechanics and process are pushed to the limit and the “art” becomes most ephemeral. The idea of art as a competitive endeavor is arguable, but the attraction of expression and performing in front of an audience remains exhilarating.

What is one thing your fellow sand sculptors would be surprised to learn about you?

Years ago, I bought a book by "Amazin' Walter" MacDonald and "Sandy Feet" Lucinda Wieranga, started taking buckets to the beach along with the surfboard, then it was just the buckets. My first visit to a competition was in 2000 in Fort Meyers. My full-time creative work makes occasional sand a welcome interlude.

I won a spelling bee in fifth grade at Paradise Elementary School.

Sit around, play guitar, feed my little chickadees and watch my flowers grow.

That I actually enjoyed shooting that .30-caliber machine gun.

I began competing in sand sculpting back in 2003 in Valladolid, Spain.

I felt the need to transform my own ideas into a sculpture. From that moment on I was hooked on sand sculpting competitions.

What do you do for fun when you aren't creating masterpieces in the sand?

If I'm not creating sand sculptures I am to be found on the tennis court hitting balls as hard as I can. Afterward you'll find me dreaming away on the terrace with a (only one) cold glass of beer and a coke.

What is one thing your fellow sand sculptors would be surprised to learn about you?

I have been into sand sculpting for more than 10 years, so they might know quite a lot about me already.

But they'll probably be surprised to know that I'd love to see splatter/ horror movies.

Where are your three favorite places to sculpt?

The best place to sculpt sand is anywhere with excellent quality sand, on a beautiful day, working either alone or alongside talented, fun people. So long as those ingredients are there, that place will be my current favorite place to sculpt sand. Sand festivals and exhibitions in fun foreign places are basically awesome, and I would love to eventually do more of them. Also anywhere in Palau.

Why/when did you begin competing in sand sculpting events?

I’m new to the competition circuit. I began competing only a year ago. I wanted to get into competitions to quell the tremors of sand addiction and continue skipping down the road of my sandy lifestyle.

I like to think that I wake up in the morning and win the awesome award for living life to the fullest every day. Sandly speaking, I have taken one second-place award last year in the doubles category at my first masters level competition.

My first competition was in 2002 in South Padre Island. I was 21, and it was my first time visiting the United States. The first picture I took was of my first sunrise here, and Chris happened to be in the picture. He is now my husband.

Jesolo, Venice, Italy; Quebec City; and Parksville, B.C., Canada Why/when did you begin competing in sand sculpting events? After 10 years of snow and ice sculpting, I was introduced to the sand sculpting world in 2002 at Harrison Hot Springs, B.C., Canada ... and I loved it right away.

What awards have you won?

World Championship Doubles 2003; Canadian Open 2006, ’07, ’08, ’09; and Virginia Beach 2009

Where are your three favorite places to sculpt?

There are a few private residences I can think of, but, unfortunately, the people who live in these places have taken out restraining orders against me, but, then again, that hasn't stopped me before.

What do you do for fun when you aren't creating masterpieces in the sand?

I paint jazz musicians in action.

I don't think anyone would call my 10% effort competing.

That I and none of my friends have mobile phones. We live in a cellfree zone ... REALLY.

Justin Bieber and I dated back in school, but what they'll find surprising is that after two months I only made as far as second base. What a tease.
