Homeless arrests continue

Police are focusing on the ‘Top 20,’ a group of homeless people who break the law repeatedly.

Chuck Maydwell lives on the streets of Sarasota. Recently, he’s been feeling targeted by police. Sitting last week in the shade provided by the Whole Foods building on Lemon Avenue, he talked about how officers tell him he can’t sit on the sidewalk and how one of his friends was just arrest-

ed for sleeping outside City Hall. But the 62-year-old, out-ofwork carpenter and Vietnam veteran acknowledges that some of the younger homeless people in the city are more aggressive than others and draw the attention of law enforcement to the homeless population.

“There are some bad apples,” Maydwell says. Sometimes he wants to call 911 on some members of this group. “They’re young people,” says Byron Edgerton, another homeless man sitting beside Maydwell and trying to stay out of the afternoon heat.

Edgerton said he, too, has seen his share of police attention recently, including an encounter he had two days prior that resulted in his receiving a citation for having an open beer. But, mostly, he just tries to lie low.

HEAVENLY HOUND

Cats and dogs weren’t the only pets to be blessed at Church of the Redeemer’s Blessing of the Animals event Sunday, Sept. 30. Ellie Fitzgerald brought her pet hen, Roxie to be blessed, as well. If the sky is falling, this Chicken Little can count her blessings.

+ Splish splash Temple Beth Sholom Schools hosted its annual “Welcome Back Splash” at the South Sarasota YMCA Sunday, Sept. 24. Students, families and teachers celebrated the start of a new school year. Although school already started, students enjoyed the warm weather and were happy to take advantage of the pools, water slides and diving boards.

CLOSING FILES

City moves past investigation’s wake A final report is still forthcoming, but the city manager says the focus will now turn to trying to move the city ahead and tackling key issues.

+ Calling all artistic vendors The Historical Society of Sarasota County is looking for local artisans, writers, artists and creators of unique items to sell in the gift shop of treasures, located in the detached kitchen of the Bidwell-Wood House. The shop will be manned by volunteers. Call 3649076 for more information.

The Sylint Group Inc. President John Jorgensen, right, said it was difficult to determine exactly what city emails were deleted.

Now that an investigation into a former city manager’s use of city emails — and a wave of scrutiny at City Hall — is nearing an end, city officials are trying to get back to business as usual. A cyber review, conducted by The Sylint Group Inc. and ongoing for the past eight months, will be complete by the end of

this month, and a separate lawenforcement investigation is also wrapping up. No criminal charges are expected. “This is starting to sunset, and we’re moving on,” said City Manager Tom Barwin, who started his post a month ago, eight months after former City Manager Robert Bartolotta was forced to resign.

Barwin met with the city attorney and the city auditor Tuesday morning to talk about precautions city employees should take in the future when using the city emails and the archive system used to store those emails.
