At 12 years old, Jesse Ansley has his eyes set on one thing — winning the Grand National Cross Country Series in his age group.
Retired superintendent David Gayler and law firm Trenam Kemker will soon start their superintendent search.

MANATEE COUNTY — The healing process has begun, or so members of the Manatee County School Board hope. Monday the board approved unanimously actions to lead the district forward through a time of financial crisis and intense public distrust. Board members agreed to ask former Charlotte County Schools Superintendent David Gayler to serve as the district’s interim superintendent and to hire the law firm Trenam Kemker to facilitate an independent audit of the district’s budget. Manatee County Schools’ former Superintendent Tim McGonegal resigned Sept. 10, three days after revealing the district was facing a $3.4 million deficit because of accounting errors.
An organization that provides therapy and other services to the area’s needy families is raising money for the cause. Manatee Hope will host its fifth annual dinner and silent auction Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Elks Lodge in Palmetto. Guests are asked to dress in their best Mardi Gras attire for the evening, which will feature dancing, dinner, a silent auction and live music by Rusty Trumpet. The East County-based nonprofit provides mentalhealth assistance, case management, speech and physical services, counseling, parent-and-child interaction therapy programs and more for uninsured, homeless or low-income families in need. Visit manateehope.com for more information.

Jesse Ansley was featured on the cover of Florida Trail Riders magazine in May. EAST COUNTY — Jesse Ansley can turn virtually anything into a competition, from seeing who can run the fastest or do the most pushups, or even carry in the most groceries. His competitor mentality, combined with his natural abilities, has landed the 12-year-old a chance to win big on a national scale. Jesse, a member of Bayside Com-
munity Church, is a frontrunner in his age group for the Grand National Cross Country Series’ 65 Class. With just three races to go, Jesse’s point total places him so far ahead of his competitors that there’s virtually no way he can end the season without a championship title. His last two national races of the season are Oct. 21, in Indiana, and Nov. 3, in Tennessee.
He’s also competing in the Florida Trail Riders state cross country, or hare scrambles, series, for which he took home a top finish in the Mini A Class race Sept. 22, in Bartow. On Sept. 16, during national competition, he beat out the second-place finisher by three minutes, 45 seconds. “I just want to see how many
