+ The cat is out of the bag! On her 15th birthday Aug. 12, East County resident Maria Wirries, an up-andcoming ice-skating, dancing and singing teenager, was surprised by about 20 guests at Cat Depot, where she learned a cat pod had been named in her honor — “Maria’s Manor.” This winter, Wirries found a stray cat, Artemis, to whom she became attached. Wirries arranged to have the cat live at Cat Depot until he was adopted. As a gift, Cat Depot volunteer Nancy Colby gave Maria a painted portrait of Artemis the stray. “Grandpa” Greg Gregory, and his wife, Ilene Friedman, hosted the party. Those in attendance included her mother, Jeaneen Wirries; Beatrice Friedman and her aide, Samantha Craig, a Cat Depot volunteer and the family’s link to the facility; Dr. Joseph Holt, artistic director of the Gloria Musicae professional chorus with which Maria performs; her teacher and accompanist, Alan Corey; Seth Wertz, Sandra Orlando, Sue Bennett and Harold Ronson.
+ Elks Lodge raises funds for veterans Lakewood Ranch-Sarasota Lodge No. 2855 raised approximately $3,500 for K9sforVeterans.org during a special fundraising event Aug. 12, at the club’s lodge. K9sforVeterans.org trains dogs to be companions to veterans who have invisible disorders such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and post-traumatic stress disorder. The amount raised was the single-largest donation the organization had received.
Although the project is being driven by the Inter-District Authority, the agency set up to handle joint issues on behalf of Lakewood Ranch’s five community development districts,
CDD 2 supervisors have agreed to secure financing for the project, as the district is established with creditors. “We did it before (for Lakewood Ranch Town Hall),” CDD 2
Chairman Bob Stepleman said. “The agreements are pretty tight. While we’re the lead agency, all the CDDs are responsible

Sixteen-year-old Sarah Schoeffel says she loves learning about other cultures.
Extraordinary Exchange Sixteen-year-old Sarah Schoeffel spent approximately seven weeks in China this summer. The teen was one of 30 students nationwide to earn the scholarship opportunity with the NSLI-Y Scholarship program.
EAST COUNTY — Sarah Schoeffel’s summer proved to be a non-stop lesson in culture. Rather than visiting relatives, lounging at the beach or embarking on other local endeavors, the 16-year-old tested
her language skills in Beijing, away from everything she held familiar. “I thought it was going to be a challenge, but I was up to facing that chal-

Of the Great Wall: “It’s quite funny now that it’s a tourist attraction,” Sarah Schoeffel said of the Great Wall of China. “It was built as a defense mechanism. It was so intense climbing it. You’re going straight up or straight down.”
